Students show they’re panel beaters! By CASEY NEILL HAND Brake Turn students are used to repairing cars, but have been cutting them apart in the name of safety. On 28 August Dandenong Fire Station crew members visited the not-for-profit Concern Australia program, which helps 15 to 20-year-olds get their lives on track through training in mechanics, panel beating and spraying. Senior station officer Daryl Owen discussed what tools and equipment firefighters used to rescue people trapped in serious collisions. Participants used the hydraulic cutting equipment under supervision to feel the weight and force it takes to cut a car open. “We hope the participants
were able to see workplace safety and how quickly their pride and joy vehicles could be destroyed by a vehicle collision and then by us cutting the occupants free,” Mr Owen said. HBT manager Marc Clothier said the CFA visit encouraged participants to make good choices. “Some of them were quite surprised at hearing some of the stories about the accidents they’d been to and having to remove people,” he said. “I think some of them got a bit of a wake-up call.” HBT runs five nine-week courses each year and students achieve a certificate II in autobody repair technology, which counts toward auto apprenticeships.

■ Call for police to hit the brakes on safety crackdown...
Bikers bust-up MOTORCYCLISTS are slamming a Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol bike safety crackdown, saying they’re being targeted unfairly. Senior Sergeant Scott Roberts told the Journal his officers would pull over “just about every motorbike they see” during the next few months to combat an increase in accidents involving motorbike riders. This has prompted an angry response from riders, including Independent Riders Group (IRG) spokesman Damien Codognotto. He said members were thinking twice about taking part in the Cranbourne GP Run to the Australian Mo-
torcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island in October. “I’m one of them,” he said. “I’ve had two emails from riders who simply will not go to the island at that time. “Nothing puts touring riders off returning to an area or a state more than being pulled up for doing nothing wrong, checked like a common criminal by the road and given a lecture by someone who may not be able to ride, let alone safely.” Mr Codognotto said the GP Run was a good example of “a massive number of riders coming together, enjoying themselves and spending their money with no safety problems at all”. “Police do not pull up just about

He said officers would check whether bikes were roadworthy and warn riders about lane-splitting, riding up service lanes and taking unnecessary risks. Sen Sgt Roberts said police were targeting spring because of the warmer weather and the MotoGP. “Motorbikes get put away over the winter months. Riders dust them off and get out in the nicer weather,” he said. “Sometimes they haven’t ridden for a while so they’re a bit rusty with their skills, or they haven’t checked the bike out. “We just want to minimise the trauma.”
