REASONS TO VISIT

Olinda

William Ricketts Sanctuary National Rhododendron Gardens

Beauty and tranquility merge into one at this natural museum, adorned by ferny glades in the Dandenong Ranges.

Host to a range of spectacular blooms of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, cherries and daffodils, your eyes won’t know where to look with the garden’s colour-popping beauty. Meticulously preserved, the grounds are gorgeous year round with impressive ponds, wooden bridges and wildlife scattered throughout. During the blooms’ off season, visitors can continue to soak up the natural beauty of the garden’s rich bark textures, seed capsules, and foliage shapes which are enveloped in a sweet, wafting fragrance.

More than 80 years old, the sanctuary inspires quiet reflection and calm as guests leisurely stroll through the gardens, peppered with tens of mystical ceramic sculptures. With a rich history, the sanctuary also tells the tale of William Ricketts who created and lived in the natural retreat along with his echoing philosophy about our responsibility toward the environment. With many international visitors returning from around the world, the sanctuary is great for nature-loving enthusiasts or those wanting to learn more about Ricketts’ passion and vision for nature through art.

3 Dining Be it an energising coffee at one of the many cafes or dinner at one of the town’s acclaimed restaurants, visitors are sure to leave satisfied with Olinda’s dining experience. Sampling the area’s highly soughtafter local produce, restaurants such as Seasons at Cloudehill Nursery and Garden provide the tastebuds with a burst of fresh flavour while Cuckoo Restaurant offers a night of fun and indulgence, serving a smorgasbord of German inspired foods with live music and floor shows throughout.

Triangle of temptation By DAVID ALLEGRETTI THE Marysville triangle encompasses the towns of Marysville, Narbethong and Buxton and is a must see for anybody who is searching for a relaxing yet adventurous and memorable holiday. During the Black Saturday bushfire disaster in February 2009 Gallipoli Park served as a shelter for Marysville residents who were unable to escape from the town. Following the devastating fires the park was reopened in April 2011. From out of the ashes an oasis of tranquillity has sprung. These days visitors can catch children playing at the impressively built state-of-the-art playground or see patrons sitting peacefully by the water. Gallipoli Park also boasts the impressive and rather beautiful New Life Sculpture as well as a reflective garden which is a permanent symbol of new life in the community and pays homage to those who suffered in the disaster. About four kilometres south-east of Marysville visitors will find the magical Steavenson Falls.

The falls are open seven days a week and floodlit each night until 11pm - a perfect place for a relaxing twilight stroll and a beautiful scene not to be missed. Foodies are in for a treat as the Marysville triangle offers an abundance of choice. Warm up over a coffee or hot chocolate at Fraga’s Café in Marysville or head over to Igloo Road House in Buxton for some famous burgers that will definitely not disappoint. For those who are looking to get away from it all, Woodlands Rainforest Retreat at 137 Manby Road, Narbethong, is the perfect place to escape from the everyday chaos that is modern living and for visitors to just get back to their roots. Visitors can enjoy a cosy warm fire as they sit and soak up the naturally soothing sounds of the rainforest or wash away their worries in the large sunken spa bath which is complete with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out into the rainforest.

By REBECCA BILLS ENJOYING a day in the Yarra Valley hopping from winery to winery is a must on your bucket list. Whether it be to indulge in the world-class food which is available across the area or indulging in world-renowned wine, the question is - should visitors be their own tour guide or not? There are plenty of trip planning apps and websites naming the top 10 places to visit but what about finding those extra special hidden delights that are scattered few and far between. Yarra Valley Wine Tours general manager Brian Sultana said one of the biggest advantages of going with a tour company is that there isn’t the danger of drink driving. “Here at Yarra Valley Wines we use local drivers who know the area really well so we know those small boutique wineries that the general traveller is not aware of,” he said. Tours also come in all different shapes and sizes. “We do private tours which is a great option to get your friends together and enjoy a day together or the public option allows you to meet other people in a really social setting,” Mr Sultana said. But if the appeal of going it alone is what the heart desires, it’s best to grab a local and ask for those extra special places that only they know about. So, to book a tour or do it yourself? Whatever the decision, it will still be a divine day.

MEET THE WINEMAKER

Wine, a family affair By Jesse Graham FOR Franco D’Anna, winemaking is more than just a lifestyle, it’s a family affair. He said he ‘fell into’ his job as a winemaker at Hoddles Creek Estate, when his parents decided to plant vineyards in 1997. “We’ve had a property out here in Hoddles Creek since 1960,” he said. “They decided to put vines in there - I came here for two weeks to give them a hand and just never left.” Since then, the winery has received acclaim for its wines and for its prices, being awarded as the Best Value Winery in Australia in the James Halliday Australian Wine Companion Awards. The secret to the estate’s success, according to Mr D’Anna, is a focus on detail, an oldschool approach to making wine, and using grapes perfected in the vineyard. “We try and get the fruit right in the vineyard,” he said.

“It’s almost like cooking - when you’ve got the good ingredients, it’s just a bit of seasoning and that’s it. “We spend 96 per cent of our time in the vineyard, and we don’t try to push the wine in a certain direction, we let it find its own way.” Mr D’Anna said that winemaking had been a passion of his for years, and described the practice as a combination of art and science, along with months of hard work. “For me, personally, it’s the flexibility and not being confined to four walls,” he said. “It combines an art and a science - you can dictate how much art you want in the wine, and how much science. “At the end of the day, you work for 12 months and you see the results in the bottle. There are not many trades where your work is transferred to something in the bottle and it gets reviewed.” The life of a winemaker is not all parties and

drinking wine by the fire, however, and Mr D’Anna said his work wouldn’t be possible without an understanding family, willing to accommodate long working hours in harvests. “I’ve been married for 13 years, and I’ve been away for two years collectively, with harvests overseas and here,” he said. “It’s not all about going home and drinking wine - it’s a huge sacrifice for family. It’s a level of commitment you need to have.” In terms of the future, as with his approach to the past, Mr D’Anna said he wanted to keep things just the same at the estate, working on wines and making them the best they could be. Hoddles Creek Estate is located at 505 Gembrook Road, Hoddles Creek, and runs tours by appointment. Look out for the cinema’s outdoor screening area, opening from December each month, which invites visitors to watch their favourite films with their own picnic beneath the sun or stars in the picturesque parkland area. Belgrave’s stunning natural forest will take your breath away including Glen Harrow Park which spans across eight hectares of native forest across the Puffing Billy train line. Visit the garden’s famous home tree, a 150-year-old Algerian Oak which towers over 60 metres above the ground. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot well-loved native animals and birds at Birdlands Reserve. The 75 hectare reserve offers a great, family-friendly spot for an afternoon picnic or a bushwalk ... be sure to keep your eyes peeled for platypuses!

Capital of

opportunity

By REBECCA BILLS TECOMA has made headlines around the world over the past few years, but the town hopes to be known for something more. It has now become the op-shop capital of the Yarra Ranges, with five pre-loved opportunity stores lining the town’s main street. Reporter REBECCA BILLS took locals Annabelle and Connor to check out what this melting pot of pre-loved clothes had to offer - and they weren’t disappointed. Tecoma Traders Association president Karen Rook says when shoppers come to Tecoma they need to be prepared to shop around and take a few hours exploring what each shop has to offer. “As you can see by the outfits Annabelle and Connor are wearing, multiple opshops were visited to create the perfect look at an affordable price,” she said.

Annabelle’s Outfit: Friends of Couture dress from Preloved: $19 Bailey hat from Preloved: $3 Bracelet from Salvos Tecoma: $2.25 Necklace from Salvos Tecoma: $4.25 Deluns clutch from PWP Op-Shop: $3 Miss Shop ballet flats from Piccaninny Recycled Clothing: $10

dining

Cooking not just pot luck COOKING (and eating) is one of those things that just seems to fit very cosily into the spring landscape. Not only is the appetite sharper and the kitchen warmer, it’s very much something that has particular appeal from indoors when the sun is peeking through the clouds and there’s a bit of a chill in the air. That’s why cooking classes are becoming increasingly popular in the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges where those in the know share their culinary skills (and secrets) on everything from chocolate-making to how to make the perfect pasta sauce, pickles and preserves, bottle orchard-fresh fruit, make the supreme sausage, create a curry or learn everything there is to know about preparing pork from tip to toe. This region is fortunate to have two of the most vital ingredients on its doorstep when it comes to creating great food.

It’s home to some of the country’s best and most diverse produce, and it’s home to some of the country’s best chefs and artisan food makers. It’s the perfect match that means aspiring foodies can experience a generous slice of culinary knowledge, mixed with a dash of creativity, and more than a dollop of fun as a memorable and lasting souvenir of their stay in this beautiful part of the world. Classes range from individual tuition to small and larger groups, with most providers happy to organise a class that suits individual needs. It’s best to book ahead for cooking classes if planning on visiting at a particular time, but it’s also worth checking out what’s cooking when looking for something a bit different to do on a wintry weekend. Local tourist information centres will be able to help with information on who’s who in the kitchen.

fresh from the farm

Blueberries, by chance EVERT Driessen went shopping for cherry trees in 1984 and returned with blueberry plants. It was that impromptu, but fortuitous, change of plan 30 years ago that led to the thriving Mantirri Blueberry Farm in Narbethong, and ultimately the Badger Creek Blueberry Farm and Winery Cafe. Tragically, Mantirri was lost in the bushfires of 2009, but with a sister ‘patch’ of blueberries thriving at Badger Creek by that time, the delightful blueberry experience continues – including berries fresh from the bushes from December through to February. Overlooking the rolling Warramate Hills across the Yarra River flats, the cafe specialises in home-cooked morning and afternoon teas, baked fresh daily. The house specialty, and favourite with visitors, is undoubtedly the mouth-watering berry pancakes, but really, it can be a tough choice with delicious berry muffins and friands, baked cheesecake, apple and blueberry strudel competing on the menu. The cafe is cosy and comfortable, but in spring, the opportunity to move outside and soak up a bit of spring sunshine, and the views, is irresistible. A range of fruit wines, including the farm winery’s refreshing blueberry sparkling, is

available for tasting and purchase, along with the St Ronan’s apple or pear ciders and a selection of ales. The experience doesn’t have to end with your visit however. Choose from a great range of berry products including jams and toppings to take home, or to share with friends. You can even grow your own with several varieties of blueberry plants available, with helpful growing advice thrown in for free! Frozen blueberries are available all year round. Badger Creek Blueberry Farm is just around the corner from Healesville Sanctuary at 11 Garnook Grove and is open from 10am to 5pm, Thursday through to Monday. Visit blueberrywinery.com.au or phone 5962 1601.

CELLAR DOOR

A taste of history A TASTE of history - and some of the valley’s best produce – is on offer to visitors, as a redeveloped estate opens its doors for the first time in over 100 years. The Coombe Melba Estate features historic outbuildings that belonged to world-famous opera singer, Dame Nellie Melba and redeveloped areas for tourists and wine lovers alike. The restaurant and cellar door are all new features of the updated estate, and Melba’s own personal items and collections will be on display in the gallery. However, the grounds will retain their original look for the most part, with original building facades and grounds remaining. Manager of Coombe Cottage, Daniel Johnson, said Melba’s family, who still own the estate today, were hoping the redevelopment would help her legacy to live on. “I’m hoping this is not just for the history buffs – what’d be really lovely would be that all demographics could come, learn, and find this really important,” he said. “Melba was the most famous woman

on the planet at the turn of the last century - that’s a fantastic achievement for her and for Australia.

The historic homestead on the Melba Estate. Pictures: JESSE GRAHAM

“The most important thing, for us and for the family, is, when the gates finally open, people feel it’s worth the wait.” Visitors will be able to access the special and expansive gardens around the grounds, which have been kept as they were in Melba’s day. Tours will be run through the gardens, including private tours for groups of more than 50, and all money raised from garden tours will go back to maintaining and restoring the historic estate. The providore and cellar door will offer wines, flowers, fruits and vegetables grown on the grounds and at Coombe Farm, and exclusive Melba memorabilia will be sold on site. The Melba Estate is open from Thursday-Monday, with garden tours beginning at 11am and 2pm, Wednesday to Sunday. Garden tours cost $20 per person, with morning or afternoon tea included. GARDENS

A time of gardens SPRING ... when one’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of gardens (to borrow from 19th century poet laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson). Well, if Tennyson were living now in the magnificent hills and valleys of the Yarra Ranges, his famous ‘Spring’ poem would almost certainly have spoken not of love, but of gardens! Perhaps! It’s the re-awakening time when the many public gardens of the Dandenongs spring back to life after their winter hibernation, the first of the Australia Open Gardens launches for another year and local clubs open their doors for the annual spring shows. John and Prue Van de Linde’s Alowyn Gardens in Yarra Glen is, in gardening terms, a perennial, either as a destination in its own right, or as the centrepiece of a tour of the region’s gardens. Some 17 years after work first started on Alowyn, it is an awardwinning destination garden that is constantly evolving, making it well worth a return visit and an exciting discovery for first-timers. When John and Prue were named ABC Gardener of the Year winners in 2008, judge John Patrick described Alowyn as a garden that worked on many levels. He noted the way it had been meticulously planned and the diversity of the plants. “It has an internal focus with the fountain, but it still borrows the landscape around as a setting,” he added. All that remains true, but with more levels added to the parterre, forest, perennial border, edible, display and dry gardens over the past six years. The front paddock is now a large formal garden, with long tree-

Feast for the senses By CAITLIN MCARTHUR OVER half a million tulips in flower will be just one of the highlights of the Tesselaar Tulip Festival which kicks off this spring. The festival, which runs from 11 September to 7 October, features four weeks of themed days, garden displays, live bands and sculptor displays. The weekends are alternately themed by Turkish, Dutch and Irish culture. Seniors Week offers free entry for carers and a complimentary tea or coffee while Children’s Week features face painting, a Despicable Me 2 stage show and a petting zoo. The food, wine and jazz weekend boasts the jazz tunes of John Morrison, Melbourne’s Moonee Valley Jazz Band and the Cheek to Cheek jazz trio with their baby Grand Piano. Produce is sourced locally from the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges and entry to the food, wine and jazz weekend includes complimentary wine and beer tastings. Home to the fifth richest sculpture prize, an exhibition of 25 sculptures will feature among the beds of tulips. Other activities include petting alpacas, picking tulips and indulging in authentic Dutch treats. The Tesselaar Tulip Festival is situated in the hills of Silvan on a 55-acre working farm. The festival opens at 10am and runs until 5pm every day. Tickets can be bought online to avoid the queues at tulipfestival. com.au. Adults are $22, while concession is $18. 32 SPRING 2014

Quieter side of wine BY KATH GANNAWAY TRADITIONALLY, the Warburton Highway has been the quieter side of the Yarra Valley wine experience. But tradition is challenged with Shedfest. Each year, in October, the Warburton Valley wineries make a bit more noise about what they have on offer. There’s the clink of glasses, lots of chatter around the cellar doors, the sound of laughter, a chorus of accolades for magnificent food and wine, the odd pop of a cork ... and lots of music and song. It’s a cacophony that’s made Shedfest Wine Festival one of the Valley’s most popular winery weekends. Eight wineries will open their shed doors on 11 and 12 October this year, offering guests award-winning wines, fantastic regional fare, live music and entertaining games for the whole family. The festival was established to showcase the unique charm of some of the wineries and vineyards along the southern side of the Yarra Valley and, now in its 12th year, the allure of the picturesque Warburton Highway is a well-established drawcard to the region. It’s a beautiful time in the valley and an ideal weekend to relax, chat to Touristnews

the makers, taste local produce, take in the views, be entertained and watch the kids have fun, as you enjoy some of the valley’s unique wines. Shedfest wineries are easy to find once you’re on the right track. Take the right turn onto the Yarra Valley’s Warburton Highway and look for the ‘Shedfest’ signs. You can purchase your Spiegelau souvenir glass for $15 at any winery to get you started. To plan your day, or weekend, visit www.shedfest.com.au or phone 9730 2800 for details of participating wineries and how to make the most of your Shedfest visit.

MARKETS

One perfect Sunday By ANEEKA SIMONIS IF YOU want to have a perfect Sunday of family fun, good food and unique shopping, look no further than the Emerald Community Market. Overlooking the picturesque Mount Dandenong settings, the community market is your one-stop shop, selling everything from handmade craft, terrariums and bare root plants through to artisan bread, pasture-fed meats, Dutch donuts and award-winning English jam and preserves. Held every third Sunday of the month, stallholder co-ordinator Michelle Perera said the market, running for the past nine years, had something for everyone, young and old, including a face painter and jumping castle for kids. “The whole family is catered for at the market. It is a great place to socialise, have lunch, peruse the stalls and take home something unique,” she said. With over 70 stalls running each month for the past nine years, the

market attracts between 3000 and 4000 visitors looking for goodies that just can’t be bought in a supermarket. “Our stallholders carry a diverse range of high quality and locally produced products that people in this area may not be able to purchase otherwise,” Perera said. Better still, the market helps raise funds for the Performing and Visual Arts in Emerald (PAVE) Festival which is in its 10th year. Having put on 35 events, in disciplines such as theatre and writing, the market’s fundraising efforts are invaluable to Emerald’s creative community. The market is an Emerald Community House initiative, held from 9am3pm year round. For more information about the Emerald Community Market, visit http://www.emeraldcommunityhouse.org.au/.

What’s behind the By Jesse Graham AN expansive exhibition exploring disguises, deception and masking is currently filling the halls of TarraWarra Museum of Art. The TarraWarra Biennial, Whisper in My Mask, opened on 16 August, and will run through until 16 November, with over 20 hand-picked artists contributing to the exhibition. Natalie King and Djon Mundine OAM will be curating the exhibition, which features a number of indigenous and non-indigenous artists and themes exploring the idea of masking. “It’s about secret hidden narratives, local mysteries and other-worldliness – we’re using it as a trigger,” Ms King said. “We’re looking at the exhibition not being a static event, but exploring artists doing a performance, the residue of the performance and documentation, all being absorbed into it.” 36 SPRING 2014

Artists exhibiting as part of the biennial include Daniel Boyd, Soren Dahlgaard, Karla Dickens, Gabriella Mangano and Silvana Mangano, Polixeni Papapetrou, the Tjanpi Desert Weavers and more. A number of different mediums will be used to portray the artists’ works, with film, painting, photography and live performances making up the exhibition. TWMA Director, Victoria Lynn, said the exhibition explores these deep themes through visual and sensory works. “This year’s biennial features both timely political gestures about the masking of history, as well as a more mysterious interest in hidden personas, ghosts and telepathy,” she said. “...The exhibition also embraces a broad sense of community that encompasses not only the local Yarra Valley, but also the significant indigenous communities across Australia.” A number of events will be held throughout

the course of the biennial, including a number of performances and talks on October 19 with various artists and Ms King and a poetry reading. The opening of the biennial next weekend is timed to coincide with the Melbourne Art fair, which runs from 13-17 August at the Royal Exhibition Building. ACCESSIBLity

Tourism within easy reach By KATH GANNAWAY WHEN tourism and business operators from around the Yarra Ranges’ region gathered in May this year for a seminar on accessible tourism, they were blown away by the opportunities being opened up around the world. Whether it’s age, physical or intellectual disability or other challenges people face when they pack their bags for a one-off or longer holiday experience, the message was loud and clear – accessible tourism is an untapped market that Yarra Ranges can tap into to open up a whole range of experiences to everyone. The sector currently represents 11 per cent of the tourism market but it was estimated it could make up 25 per cent by 2020. Certainly, the seminar, presented by Yarra Ranges Tourism, Yarra Ranges Council and Tourism Victoria was aimed at creating opportunities for the businesses involved, but there was a genuine enthusiasm for providing the means for everyone to share the exciting and memorable experiences that come with getting out in the great outdoors, jumping from a plane, attending a festival or just relaxing in a place that is inclusive. Bill Forrester from Travability challenged the view of many operators which is that people with a disability were non-participative, passive, travelling with a carer and looking to the lower end of the market.

“I want to change those perceptions. The thing to remember about disability, it’s the only minority group in the world that anybody can join in an instant,” he said. He showed it can be done highlighting experiences overseas where operators had succeeded in capturing the disability market showing practical examples, from signage and placement of furniture to heritage buildings that had adapted to meet the needs of the disability market. The Loft in the Mill in Olinda, Three Sugars Café in Warburton, Global Ballooning in Dixons Creek and De’Vine Escape in Yarra Glen he said, were great local examples of businesses catering for the market. Kiff Saunders from Global Ballooning is the first balloon company in the world to come up with an accessible balloon basket and in June this year the company won the Business and Community Supporting Disability category at the prestigious Victorian Disability Sector awards. Mr Saunders spoke passionately about what it means, not only in a business sense, but on a personal level. “You feel very proud if you can offer a person an experience that’s not been available to them before,” he said. “I would love to think we have a quantum accessibility tourism operation here,” he added.
