“We would like to raise at least $700,000 which would give us a reasonably good playspace with excellent access and equipment for people of all abilities.

“If we can reach close to $1 million, then we could create a truly amazing space with a larger fenced area and other things that are just out of the budget at the moment.

“But I can confirm that this will definitely go ahead now.

“It’s not an idea anymore, it’s going to happen.”

Ms Howell said the play space would incorporate things such as a kite flying hill, be secure and fenced in and have a wheelchair accessible carousel.

City of Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon said the playspace was a project she was committed to and passionate about.

DEVELOPMENT of the first all-inclusive playspace for the south east of Victoria is in the swing of things in Casey, with the vision for the facility unveiled on Friday.

Members of the community gathered at the future site of Livvi’s Place at the Marriott Waters Recreation Reserve on Friday to celebrate the unveiling of the dream vision for the playspace.

Three cheques from MediBank Community Fund, Pakenham business ProPlumb and SITA were also presented towards the project at the celebration.

The Touched by Olivia Foundation charity is working with the City of Casey to develop the playspace - to be the only one of its kind in this region.

Inclusive playspaces provide play opportunities for children of all abilities to play side by side.

While there will be the usual swings and slides, every aspect of the design will consider the special needs of children with disabilities.

Local resident and project champion Therese Howell has been the catalyst behind making Livvi’s Place happen.

Ms Howell, whose son Jack has a disability, urged other business to get on board so they can ensure the play space reaches its full potential.

“A Livvi’s Place in Casey will be a place for families with children of all ages, stages and abilities to meet, socialise, connect with their community and make new friendships in a safe and play filled environment,” she said.

“I’m very proud that the City of Casey have agreed that Casey needs a Livvi’s Place and I’m very much looking forward to watching our playspace develop.

Show some respect

By BRIDGET COOK CASEY’S bus operator has spoken out about the lack of respect towards public servants following the unprovoked attack on a bus driver in Hampton Park on Sunday night.

The Transit Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) is investigating the incident which occurred about 7.25pm on Sunday at the bus stop on Somerville Road, opposite the Hampton Park Shopping Centre.

Police have been told that a young man, who was accompanied by another five to six youths, tried to board the bus without paying.

Transit CIU Detective Senior Constable Lisa Bos said there was then a verbal altercation between the driver and young man.

“At this point, the male, who we believe is about 15 to 16-years-old,

hit the bus driver over the head,” she said.

“The bus driver attempted to get out of his seat and the assault continued.

“During the course of the assault, the driver’s mobile phone was stolen by one of the other youths not involved in the assault.”

Another occupant on the bus came to the aid of the driver by trying to pull the attacker away.

The group of teens managed to escape by running off east along Somerville Road towards Hallam Road.

An ambulance attended and treated the bus driver who suffered from bruising and lacerations to his head and hand and a chipped tooth.

Cranbourne Transit, which operates the bus service in Casey, said this was just one of many unprovoked attacks across the network.

“Cranbourne Transit has noticed an increase in serious assaults against our drivers over the last few years, the latest of which occurred in Hampton Park on Sunday night,” general manager David Ratner said.

“These events are not isolated to ourselves as the number of incidents has been increasing across the network.

“While the industry is working closely to address the issue and find workable solutions, it is very clear that the levels of respect towards, not just drivers but other public servants, is not at a level it should be.”

Sen Const Bos urged anyone with information about the attack to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

“Anyone with information about a group of youths hanging around the shops or bus stop in that area should call police,” she said.

“There are also a number of fast food outlets nearby and someone may have seen a group handing around in those.

“It’s a shocking attack and sad that someone who is just going about their business, just trying to do their job, is assaulted in this manner.”

The youth involved in the assault was described as Caucasian, aged about 15 to 16 years old, between 5’8” and 5’10” tall, with dark earlength hair and wearing a beanie.

Police hope to have photos of those involved in the attack in the next couple of days from the bus’s camera.

Steak knife robbery A TEENAGER had a knife pulled on him and his mobile phone stolen during an armed robbery in Cranbourne West on Sunday night.

The 16-year-old boy was sitting with a female friend at the park at Cranbourne West Primary School on Duff Street about 6.15pm when they were approached by two men.

Police said one of the men produced a butcher’s knife and told the victim to empty his pockets.

The victim handed over his mobile phone before the two offenders ran off through the park.

The two men were described as being of African appearance and wearing black pants and black hooded jumpers.

Tradie thefts POLICE have urged tradesmen to be vigilant and ensure their work vehicles and trailers are locked after a spate of thefts last week.

On Thursday night and in the early hours of Friday last week five tradesmen’s cars were targeted by thieves and tools were stolen.

The thefts occurred in Cobungra Court, Hallam, Collins Crescent, Berwick, and Hinrichsen Drive, Hallam.

Hop along to help bunnies find a home

By BRIDGET COOK A DEVON Meadows animal shelter has urged people to hop on in and help give its rescued rabbits a loving forever home.

Australian Animal Rescue is currently inundated with rabbits over all ages that have been rescued or surrendered.

Sharon Williamson, who runs the organisation, said the animal shelter currently had almost 30 rabbits and desperately needed to find new homes for some of them.

“We take on the rabbits from the

Lost Dogs’ Home in Cranbourne,” she said.

“We currently have more than 20 and it’s hard to afford to feed and house them all.

“If you are willing to take one on and give it a loving, caring forever home then come and have a look.

“All we are asking is for a donation towards the charity which would go towards feeding the new rabbits we get in at least fortnightly.”

Ms Williamson urged people to be 100 per cent sure they wanted to

take on the responsibility of a rabbit as a pet before purchasing them to avoid so many being surrendered or abandoned.

“If you’re not willing to keep an adult rabbit, don’t buy a baby one just because they look cute,” she said.

“They do take quite a bit of maintenance and require feeding every day.

“Take some responsibility if you’re going to purchase a rabbit, as I believe that’s not happening.”

By BRIDGET COOK A GROUP of Hampton Park Secondary College students made a pledge to make smart decisions for their future this month.

Year 10 students committed to the Smart Futures - No Dole program by the Beacon Foundation on Thursday 5 June.

At a formal ceremony, students signed a banner pledging they would be in further education, an apprenticeship, traineeship or full time employment next year.

Pauline Thomson, part of the school’s careers team, said signing the pledge board meant students made a commitment to further education.

“It is designed to encourage students to make informed choices for their future and to encompass a positive attitude,” she said.

“The Beacon Foundation Smart Futures - No Dole program promotes and inspires students to stay in school or take positive steps towards skill development and training to enable further education or employment.”

Ms Thomson said the ceremony also included an address from the principal, an entertaining talk from

Car play with police set for court sequel POLICE have charged a man and impounded his car after he was caught allegedly travelling at more than 70 kilometres per hour over the speed limit and was chased by police.

About 6.30pm on Friday 13 June, police saw two vehicles travelling along the Princes Highway in Hallam between 150km/h and 200km/h in an 80km/h zone.

Police tried to intercept one of the cars several times while the other car drove off.

Police said the car kept pulling up and driving off again as police approached it in a service lane.

It then pulled into the car park at the corner of Princes Highway and Hallam Road.

The car then left the car park, drove the wrong way along Hallam Road before pulling into the industrial area and stopping at a dead end, police said.

The driver, who also had three passengers in the car, was arrested and had his car impounded.

The 24-year-old Ashwood man was charged with driving at a dangerous speed, reckless conduct endangering life and other traffic related offences.

He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 19 August.

Call to double fines

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A CASEY councillor will call on authorities to double fines for illegally parking in disabled spaces after a huge rise in the number of infringements in the municipality.

Cr Rosalie Crestani will recommend at next month’s council meeting that the base ‘on the spot’ penalty for illegally parking in a disabled space in Casey be increased from $144 to $288.

Cr Crestani, in accordance with advice from the council’s Local Laws department, will also suggest the maximum penalty be increased from $288 to $432 and is considering a loss of demerit points to tackle the rise in illegal parking since 2011.

“We need to make people stop and think. Something’s not working,” Cr Crestani said this week.

“I caught a fella not that long ago. A young P-plater pulled up to disabled parking section and I said ‘you’re not disabled, you move right now’.

“It is tempting because people have busy lives and they know they can get away with it.

“We need a fine that’s going to hit them hard and take a decent part of their wage every week.”

For the 2013-14 period to date there have been 713 disabled parking infringements - totalling $102,672 in fines - compared to 253 infringements in 2010-11, according to statistics gathered by the City of Casey’s Local Laws department.

In 2012-2013 there were 1016 infringements recorded, totalling $143,256 in fines.

There are currently two disabled parking offences that can

be enforced on motorists - one for not having a disabled permit and one for not complying with the conditions of the permit.

Council Local Laws Team Leader Rod Bezanovic said the increase in disabled parking infringements in Casey over the past three years was due to an increase in enforcement methods and not an increase in misuse.

In March Cr Crestani called on the council to write to the Minister for Roads Terry Mulder advocating for an increase in penalties associated with parking trucks in residential streets.

“I’m not out to just fine everyone, I’m part of the community and just as liable to get fines if I do the wrong thing, and I have in the past,” Cr Crestani said.

“I’m out to create a better environment, especially for those who really need it.

“As soon as you hit the hip pocket, people are more than likely to respond.”

Access Solutions Director and wheelchair user Dale Sheppard said increasing fines for disabled car park infringers was only the “tip of the iceberg” and greater scrutiny needed to be observed by medical practitioners who are “over issuing” permits.

“I’ve spoken about this issue numerous times and would advise that the best solution is to have two types of permit bays,” he said.

“Firstly a bay for ambulant conditions - people who need a bay close to the entrance of a building rather than the extra sized bay. Secondly a larger bay for mobility device permit holders.

Attacker makes amends A CONTRITE man was given a suspended jail term on Monday after pleading guilty to a late-night violent robbery in a Cranbourne shopping centre car park.

Ameteo Tumu, 18, was among a group of five cooffenders who were drinking outside Centro about 2am on 26 October.

Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard that they attacked a group of four people walking past on their way home, robbing one of them of a mobile phone and cash.

Tumu, in making full ad-

missions to police, admitted to striking one of the victims.

He was remanded in custody for three nights after the incident, charged with three counts of recklessly causing injury, affray and theft.

Two of the victims were hospitalised with cut and bruised faces, a female dragged by her hair suffered cuts and grazes to her elbow and another victim suffered cuts to their face.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Tumu was “doing everything right” in his rehabilitative efforts, which in-

cluded a stay in a withdrawal unit, engagement with a 10-month youth corrections order and abstinence from ice and cannabis.

He had also been taken under the wing of Casey police in a youth program.

“You’re not associating with those (co-offenders) anymore,” Mr Vandersteen said.

“You got a job... the penny dropped.”

Mr Vandersteen handed down a six-month jail term wholly suspended for 12 months.

Mr Sheppard also called for medical practices in the city to be better informed about disabled permits.

THE City of Casey will investigate taking a number of precautionary steps to ensure children are safe when enjoying local playgrounds.

At Tuesday night’s council meeting, councillors resolved to investigate the costs associated with providing safety fencing and sail shading at about 30 playgrounds across Casey.

The council will also ensure that in the future entrances to public toilets will face playgrounds to ensure parents have sight of their children as much as possible.

Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett, who raised the motion, said the investigation stemmed from the problems faced over the location of the toilet in Heritage Park in Selandra Rise, which the council was now going to move.

He said while consulting the community about the issue, a number of parents raised their concerns about the lack of fencing around the playground as well.

“Being a parent and a teacher I know what little children can do and that is chase a ball or run across a road without looking both ways for traffic,” he said.

“I thought we needed a child proof fence that would enable children to

play on equipment, and also have a large open space area to run, play and kick a ball.

“All this area should be fenced for their protection and peace of mind for parents.

“I then went and looked at a number of our playgrounds and saw that a lot had no protective large area safety fencing, and that they were near roads and toilet blocks were not present or a long distance from the play area or near a road.

“I then believed we needed to review our safety policy and facilities to better protect our families in our parks that get used often.

“Let’s not wait for an abduction from a toilet near a road and let’s have a large safe area for kids to play.”

Cr Ablett said he saw this investigation as the beginning of a great step towards rolling out safer playgrounds into the future.

“We can gradually fix the ones we have and any new ones are built along these guidelines,” he said.

Councillor Mick Morland supported the motion but was sceptical on whether the council would be able to afford it.

He estimated it would cost between $3-4 million, something a council officer was unable to confirm without further investigation.

POLICE believe it was a case of mistaken identity when a man forced his way into a Narre Warren home last week.

About 6.30pm on Friday 13 June a woman, who was home alone in her Elstar Drive house, heard a number of bangs at her front door and windows.

Police said before she had a chance to respond, the door was kicked open.

The woman saw a man standing in the front door and he yelled out ‘where are you?’.

She screamed for him to get out of the house and he left straight away.

Police said the man made no demands and didn’t steal anything, and they believed it was a case of mistaken identity.

He was described as Caucasian, in his late 20s to early 30s, about 180cm tall, of medium build and was wearing a navy coloured hooded jumper with the hood over his head.

WE, THE residents of Kiandra Mews, Hampton Park, request every ratepayer in the City of Casey to carefully scrutinise their rate notices over the past 10-15 years and they will be very surprised to see that their rates have skyrocketed by more than 300 per cent.

Our wages, salary or pensions have not gone up to this extent or percentage. Impossible. Soon low-income families who have huge home loans may have to sell out.

Each street should form a group and petition the State Government to probe into the functioning of councils. Each ratepayer should also check that apart from the garbage collection each week are they getting value for their rates, even the lawns in front of your homes are not mowed by the council.

Secondly we have emailed the council as to why council owns assets such as buildings, libraries, community centres, halls, ovals, stadiums etc, all these have been paid for from the millions and millions of dollars of ratepayers’ money.

We received an email from a council officer (Peter Gillieron) stating that the council has a freehold title which is the highest form of land ownership (not buildings) giving councils the maximum flexibility in perpetuity (forever) to pursue its perspective. In other words our ratepayer money can be used as and when they please without our consent/ permission.

We emailed the Honorary Tim Bull (Minister for Local Government) on this issue and his reply was that councils have a significant role as a custodian (guardian) of a large number of community assets (buildings, ovals, community centres etc, etc). These assets are integral for the range of services and facilities provided by the local council for the local community.

The Minister has also mentioned that he is working on a new website “My Council” to enable ratepayers to compare their council performance and see if they are getting value for money.

Every ratepayer must remember that they have a right to question the council. Councils are elected by the people, for the people and

Mourning Mehdi ON BEHALF of the Casey Multifaith Network, I want to express my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Doctor Mehdi Ali Qamar. We are saddened and disappointed to hear of his tragic murder in Pakistan.

Humanity is made up of a lot of different people. We do not all share the same faith, religion, world view, beliefs and practices.

That is probably the most obvious single observation we can make about the world.

And because that is how things always have been and always will be, it seems absurd that some of us have not accepted that. We will never all be the same. But we can determine to live well together in peace, harmony, and mutual respect and tolerance.

It is such a tragedy that some people feel they need to use violence in the face of differences. We stand with Waheed Ahmad Chatha (News, 12 June) and his family as they remind us that the response to such violence is prayer and peacemaking. Our prayers and best wishes are with them and all who knew and loved Doctor Mehdi. If any good can come from such a tragedy, please let this remind us all to be tolerant, respectful, and curious to understand people of other faiths and belief systems. Let us not be frightened or ignorant, but rather become informed and gracious.

Socially Speaking Re: ‘Cousin killed in faith feud’ (News, 12 June): AS someone who belongs to the same minority group identified in this article, I can empathise with the tragic loss of a family member in Pakistan. Unfortunately, it is an all too frequent occurrence in that country, where the blasphemy law is being used as a justification to target members of religious minority groups and is being used for personal animosity as well as fear and hatemongering. The tragedy is enhanced when justice does not prevail either. The loss of a single life in this inhumane manner is a murder of innocence.

Drug hope message

By BRIDGET COOK A CRANBOURNE church will host a program next month based around the belief that informed parents are the best prevention against children using drugs.

TurningPoint Church will host a drug education, prevention and intervention program entitled How to Drug Proof Your Kids, starting on Tuesday 22 July.

The program, created by not-for-profit organisation Focus on the Family Australia, aims to inform parents how to reduce the potential risk factors and help prevent the use of drugs by their children.

Focus on the Family Australia executive director Glenn Williams said research showed that parent education and involvement dramatically reduced the risk of young people taking drugs by nearly half.

He said that the program’s focus was on prevention and early intervention.

“This program is in response to the hundreds of concerned parents who have contacted our office, frightened for their children and families, and frustrated in their attempts to help their children,” he said.

“This program is for every parent crying out ‘tell me how’.”

The award-winning program consists of six, two-and-a-half hour sessions which are designed to equip parents with practical communication skills, critical strategies and an action plan to help their children make good lifestyle choices.

The program, led by trained facilitator Ann Newman, also includes statistical information, counselling referral services and access to a library of educational resources.

How to Drug Proof Your Kids will begin on Tuesday 22 July and will be held at TurningPoint Church, 1785 South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne.

It will start at 7pm and will run each Tuesday for six weeks.

Cost is $50 for a single and $70 for a couple and bookings are required.

Sister’s love breaks the ice

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD FOR the first time in close to 20 years Fatimah can have a proper conversation with her brother.

Fatimah (not her real name) was the driving force in ensuring her ice-addicted brother entered rehab at the end of last year, finally finding sobriety and starting his life over.

She said it was almost two decades ago when her younger brother fled the family’s home as a teenager and started using drugs, severing almost all contact with his family.

An action plan to tackle the spread of the drug ice in the state’s south-east is currently under development by the Department of Justice.

It comes after a forum on ice was held in Dandenong last month and attended by representatives from Victoria Police, the Department of Human Services, the Department of Health and local government and services agencies.

A Department of Justice spokesperson confirmed this week that the action plan was in the works.

The spokesperson said the plan aims to: Strengthen links between existing resources and services; Build awareness of existing resources; Explore and support the development of new initiatives.

When he finally returned home following their father’s death roughly 10 years ago, Fatimah said she had almost given up hope of being able to have a relationship with her brother.

“I think this is the first time in over 10 years, probably close to 20 years, that I can have a conversation with him. I couldn’t do that before,” Fatimah from Hallam said.

“I want people out there to know that having a loved one who is struggling with an addiction is nothing to be ashamed of. It’s because we were ashamed that it lasted this long.

“Drug addiction is a problem in all societies and walks of life. It’s not specific to a culture or denomination.”

Fatimah said her brother was so volatile and unreasonable that she was afraid to have her daughter in the same room as him.

“I was constantly in fear for my mother’s safety, his safety and also my daughter’s safety.

“I couldn’t bring my daughter around to my mum’s house while he was around,” she said.

“I didn’t want him to suddenly get violent, to have one of his violent attacks in front of her.

“Not physical violence but he’d yell and yell and yell and if I stood my ground, if I didn’t move he’d just shove me out of the way.

“I didn’t want her to see that.

“She (Fatimah’s daughter) knows now he’s gone into rehab.

“I told her, I explained it to her and she was quite surprised because when he’s not using, when the effects are gone, he’s actually pretty gentle.”

The journey which led to her brother attending rehab began when Fatimah saw a flier for Vision of Hope - a monthly counselling program run by staff at Hallam Medical Group for people whose loved ones suffer from drug or alcohol addiction.

“I went there and found all the help I needed to be stronger,” Fatimah said.

“I changed my approach from blaming him to saying that I don’t understand, I don’t know what to do anymore.

“I don’t want you to end up dying. We know that death is inevitable but we don’t want you to go like this.

“With help, I was able to accept that I was an enabler in his life, not accepting the fact that he’s struggling and condemning him for it.

“With this understanding in mind he was more receptive to my efforts to help him.”

WOMEN who built netball in Casey from the ground up, to young girls just starting out in the game, all came together to celebrate a significant milestone on Friday night.

More than 220 people packed Amstel Golf Course to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Casey Netball Association, formally known as the Cranbourne South West Netball Association.

It was as much of a reunion as it was a celebration as men and women of all ages who have contributed to netball in Casey over the past 60 years shared stories and mingled with former and current coaches, players, club presidents, scorers and umpires.

One of Australia’s most recognised sportswomen Sharelle McMahon was the guest speaker on the night and shared her story about how she went from grassroots netball to playing and captaining the Australian team.

The association also unveiled its Strategic Plan 2014-18 on the night which outlined how they plan to increase participation, develop their capacity, people and places and grow the support of netball in Casey over the next four years.

Casey Netball Association president Sue Booth said the night was all about celebrating the givers in the association.

“It’s about all of you out there who volunteer your precious time each week to ensure that we have a positive netball culture within the City of Casey,” she said.

Quilter’s craft AT just 25 years old, Amy Kallissa bucks the trend when it comes to quilter connotations.

However the Cranbourne East woman is carving out a successful career for herself in the patchwork and crafting scene, with her modern and playful designs.

This month she will exhibit and share her passion with others at the Melbourne Craft and Quilt Fair in the hope of inspiring fellow Gen-Ys with the patchwork bug.

Ms Kallissa first picked up a needle and thread at the age of two under the guidance of her mother. Even then she was an old hand, having attended patchwork meetings since she was just six days old.

She said it was these early lessons that inspired her life-long passion, which led her

to start her own business when she was 21 years old, called ’pretty. chic. handmade’.

Ms Kallissa previously studied at the Melbourne Institute of Fashion and is now a graphic design student by day and textile aficionado by night.

Ms Kallissa said she had carved out a crafting career in original patchwork and stitchery designs and drew her inspiration from her mum and the Japanese ‘Zakka’ style.

She said she had designed four new patterns that would be released and on sale at the Melbourne Craft and Quilt Fair.

“I sell the patterns for the things I design,” she said.

“I also put ready-to-make patchwork kits together that have everything you need in them to make the item.

“For this fair, my four new designs include two large quilts. The inspiration behind them is old Amish style, which I’ve modernised.

“I’m also releasing designs for a Zakka style baby quilt and Zakka style vintage table runner.”

Ms Kallissa will also have some hot-water bottle covers and iPad and laptop covers at the fair.

The Melbourne Craft and Quilt Fair will run from Thursday 26 to Sunday 29 June at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Rock of ages fund-raiser

By BRIDGET COOK THE community is invited along to rock around the world to help keep history alive in Casey.

The Cranbourne Shire Historical Society, which runs the Fisherman’s Cottage museum on the Tooradin foreshore, is holding its major fund-raiser for the year on Saturday 19 July.

A popular two-man show by comedic musicians Dave Allen and Ronnie Soul will be the feature of the night, as they perform rock and roll material from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s in full costume.

The Rock Around the World show takes the audience on a musical journey of the great hits including those of Roy Orbison, Bill Hayley, Buddy Holly, the Kalin Twins, Mick Jagger, Cliff Richard and Rod Stewart.

There are also comedic routines including Elvis from Hong Kong, John and Yoko, Chubby Chinese Checker, Andy Stewart, Tina Turner

Dave Allen and Ronnie Soul will perform their show Rock Around the World at the Balla Balla Community Centre next month. and a tribute to the Australian great Johnny O’Keefe.

Carol Edwards, member of the Cranbourne Shire Historical Society, said she had seen their show before and it was not to be missed.

Ms Edwards said it would have you singing and dancing along, as well as in fits of laughter.

“Come along and help raise money for the historical society,” she said. “Help keep

history alive in the area.

“It’s a show that anyone could enjoy - people of all ages. I promise it will be a great night out.”

There will also be raffles on the night and people can get together a table of eight to 10 people. The cost is $25 per head and it’s BYO glasses, drink and nibbles.

All money raised will go to the Cranbourne Shire Historical Society, so they can continue their work in managing the Fisherman’s Cottage museum and its collection of photographs, documents and maps relating to the Cranbourne and Tooradin areas.

The event will be held on Saturday 19 July at 7pm at the Balla Balla Community Centre.

Now the seasoned professional will share his knowledge and expertise at a special event being hosted by the Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens (RBG) Cranbourne next month.

The group has organised a lecture by Mr Johnson on Saturday 19 July based on the topic ‘How to win Best in Show at Chelsea’. Friends of the RBG Cranbourne co-ordinator of activities Rodger Elliot said the event was not to be missed for all gardening and horticulture enthusiasts.

The event will run from 2pm at the Australian Garden Auditorium at the RBG Cranbourne.

Cost is $25 for members of the group or $30 for non-members.

The purpose-built building has been designed to maximise learning opportunities for all students.

In addition, exam times will become a little easier for all as the classrooms on the first floor can be quickly transformed into a large exam centre.

This will allow Unit Four students to complete their final exams in familiar surroundings in a space which is designed specifically to support their learning.

The theatrette is a particularly welcome addition and will provide another venue for the school’s extensive VCE lecture program.

Among the first to present in the new centre will be author and year 12 VCE English expert David Maclean who will run a series of workshops covering each part of the English course.

Casey Grammar School is committed to best practice teaching and learning.

This will be followed by various revision lectures, which will be run by a leading provider, to be held in the theatrette later in the year.

While such programs have been held before, the new building adds a further dimension - it is an acknowledgement of the

importance of the VCE and an indication of the value the school places on it.

Despite the new centre’s modern facilities and abundance of learning space, the school understands that it takes more than ‘bricks and mortar’ to build a learning community.

Ultimately, it is the learning community within the centre’s walls that will make the real difference.

THE Casey Winter Arts Festival kicked off in style on Saturday with circus acts, colourful dance performances and harmonious singers.

The council hosted the Festival Open Day at Haileybury Berwick Campus on Saturday, which kicked off a three-month long celebration of the arts in Casey to give people a taste of what they can expect.

The festival provides Casey’s residents with opportunities to participate in a diverse selection of free or low cost arts activities and events throughout the winter season.

Over the next three months there is a full program of music, dance, theatre, literature and visual arts activities and exhibitions going on throughout the city for the community to enjoy.

City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett encouraged people to head along to the events which were on offer.

“The City of Casey is home to so many talented artists and taking part in the festival is a great way for residents to support the local arts community who have worked extensively to put together the various workshops, shows and exhibitions,”

“As we are open 24/7, our day is never typical,” she explained.

“We have to be ready to handle anything from a broken bone to a heart attack.

“We never quite know what is coming through our doors at any given time.”

Ms Austin said she loved her career despite the demanding aspect of the work.

“I knew from the age of 10 I wanted to do this work,” she said.

“I joined St John Ambulance at 11 years old as a

cadet to learn about first aid, that’s where my passion for emergency medicine started.

“One of the challenges is dealing with the unexpected, which also makes the job so interesting.

“We have to deal with so many variables, not just in patient profiles or personalities, but their often complex medical needs.

“By far the most rewarding part of this role is when we save a life.

“For example, last week a male patient aged 82 was transferred from a nursing home after a fall. It should have been a simple, straightforward case.

“However, he suffered

a cardiac arrest (his heart stopped) and if not for our experience and ability to act quickly this man would not be with his family today.”

Ms Austin said the private ED had one big advantage over the public system.

“Our biggest advantage over the public system (and we acknowledge they do a fantastic job) is the lack of waiting periods,” she said.

“We also have rapid access to most specialties and we can admit directly into our wards, which makes patient care of the highest standard.”

And does she have advice for anyone who has to visit an emergency department?

“You or your family

should know what medications you are taking, the details of the GP you see and, of course, your medical history,” Ms Austin said.

“The more details we have around your presentation, the better for us.

“Often a lack of information around how and why a patient comes to the ED can slow down our processes and delay treatment.

“We are here 24/7 to support our community and although we hope you never need to use our service, we have 30 years’ experience in emergency medicine.”

BOWEL cancer, also called colorectal cancer, is the second most common cancer in both men and women in Australia. Eighty per cent of cases have no known hereditary genetic associations.

Bowel cancer is preceded by adenomas (polyps), which may become invasive cancer if undetected.

About 90 per cent of bowel cancers are curable if caught early. Yet currently, fewer than 40 per cent are being detected in the early stages.

Colorectal surgeon Mr Brian Hodgkins comments that “sadly, more than 80 Australians die from bowel cancer very week, this risk increasing significantly after the age of 50.”

Cancer Council Australia recommends all Australians aged 50 and over screen for bowel cancer with a faecal occult blood test (FOBT) every two years.

The government currently sends free FOBT tests to all 50, 55, 60 and 65-year-olds.

Seventy-year-olds will be included in 2015 and by 2018 the free screening will be every two years.

Mr Brian Hodgkins encourages people “that if you are not in the eligible ages under the national screening program, you can still be tested. Contact your General Practitioner (GP) to discuss your screening options. Your GP can request a Faecal Occult Blood Test, which is eligible for a Medicare benefit.”

The risk of bowel cancer can be reduced by not smoking, a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, and maintaining a healthy body weight.

By BRIDGET COOK AS THE saying goes ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do’.

Students at Kilberry Valley Primary School did just that as they took a step back in time on Tuesday to battle it out in a series of fun and educational activities to see which class would rule the Kilberry Roman Empire.

Principal Neil Cunningham, or Julius Caesar as he was known for the day, addressed the students to kick off the festivities.

“I, Julius Caesar, declare today to be a momentous day in the life of the Kilberry Roman Empire,” he said.

“Today all the sections of Rome before me, will be competing against each other for this crown upon my head and with it the right to rule Rome.

“Will you accept the challenges and show others that your Roman class is worthy of this honour?”

Grade six teacher Alex Hayes said what followed was a jampacked day of ancient Rome themed activities for the students to get involved in.

“The students attended Roman school to brush up on their basic Latin and Roman numerals and learn how to cook an ancient Roman recipe.

“The students were also set

four class activities to compete against the other grade six classes including making catapults, preforming a Julius Caesar skit, making chariots and practising different Roman army drill formations.

“The students then attended the amphitheatre to challenge

each other to the above activities and see which class would be crowned victorious.”

Ms Hayes said the idea for the themed day came about after a suggestion from students to further their studies on what they have been learning in the classroom.

VICROADS has advised motorists to plan ahead and expect delays due to a number of road closures across Casey while upgrade works are underway.

Access to Hallam Road, from Somerville Road in Hampton Park, was closed this week and will remain in place for about three months.

Traffic travelling on Hallam Road will be diverted onto the new southbound lanes over the newly completed creek crossing.

Local detours will also be in place and will be signposted.

Traffic travelling on Somerville Road and wanting to access Hallam Road will be detoured via Stuart Street and Fordholm Road.

The Hampton Park Shopping Centre will remain open and all access points will operate as per usual.

VicRoads has also advised drivers of the temporary closure of the intersection of Ormond Road and Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, Narre Warren.

The closure will take place from 7pm on Satur-

day 21 June until 7pm on Sunday 13 July.

Works at the site will occur between 7am and 5pm from Monday to Saturday, although the closure will remain in place at all times.

Ormond Road access will be temporarily closed.

Traffic can continue to use Narre WarrenCranbourne Road and Littlecroft Avenue and drivers will be able to access Ormond Road properties from the west.

During the closure, drivers are advised to use Glasscocks Road or Pound Road to enter and exit Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road.

The detour route will be signposted to guide drivers and there will be speed limit reductions through the work zone.

Pedestrian access in some areas throughout the work zone will also be restricted and alternative arrangements in place for pedestrians and cyclists.

The group will host its inaugural Franchising and Business Opportunities Expo on Saturday 26 July at the Arthur Wren Hall, Hampton Park, and has invited local businesses to get involved.

The expo will be a one-day event including three workshops and about 50 exhibits, running from 9am to 2pm.

Vanassa Gerdes from HPNG urged local businesses to get involved in the expo which aimed to promote local businesses, leadership and job creation.

“We have not had a business expo like this in the City of Casey,” she said.

“Sourcing products, components and services locally is a

strong trend and this movement is changing business communities.

“Just think, if we can all buy more from businesses in our own regions then the flow-on effects will shake up our local economies.

“Our business members are looking to promote business planning, marketing, social media, networking, training, financial management, recruitment, employment and much more.

“The HPNG is bringing all that together under one roof.”

Ms Gerdes said all types of businesses were welcome at the expo from shops to trades to home based or party plan businesses.

“If you are a business owner or work for a small business, attending the business expo is a necessity to run a successful business,” she said.

“In addition to talking to great exhibitors on the expo

floor, you’ll have access to exciting functions like our unique speed networking events, small business workshops and local events where you can promote your business.

IT’S NOT every day that one’s artwork is put on display at the New York State Museum.

For Janet Matthews it’s the third time running.

The Narre Warren North artist’s latest drawing recently won the Focus on Nature Jury Award in April run by the museum, an honour reserved for the 14 best artworks out of the 80 to 90 on display at the exhibition from artists throughout the world.

“I still can’t believe it. This year I’m the only Australian that got an award, wow, it still makes me really smile,” Janet said.

“I can’t believe I did that.”

Janet said it was the third time she had been contacted to take part in the museum’s Focus on Nature exhibition but the first time she had won the Jury Award.

“It’s wildlife or science based nature stuff, and I do drawings of wildlife, birds and animals,” Janet said explaining the exhibition.

“I draw mostly Australian animals using colour pencils and graphite.

“My entry this year was an echidna swimming, below and above the water on the same image.”

Janet said she always starts a drawing with story to tell, a context for the animal that she later creates on the canvas.

“My main focus for each work is usually a story, a personal interaction, a family situation, a story that I tell through the animal or bird,” she said.

Having carved out a career for herself soon after leaving university, Janet has honed the craft which sees her spend more than 10 hours a day with a pencil in hand at her home studio.

“I always loved drawing, it’s always something I did as a child,” Janet said, “I decided to be an art teacher, because that’s the only option at high school that was available to me. I didn’t want be secretary or a nurse.

“I did my first year of university and with connections through other art teachers I discovered that they didn’t have time to do their own artwork.

“I decided then that I’d do my own diploma in art and graduate diploma in art.”

With her artwork on proud display in New York, Janet’s decision to change her career trajectory certainly appears a wise one - even if she hasn’t been able to fly over to see her work yet.

But with her back recovering well from a significant injury she believes it will only be a matter of time before she goes over to the Big Apple to see her echidna swimming in the water.

One year a big difference

By JARROD POTTER THE kilometres add up quickly for Beaconhills College student Sarsha Cadle, but she knows it’s the best way for her to improve her basketball.

The Lysterfield South power forward/centre will add another 5000 kilometres to her basketball log book as she flies up to Townsville after earning her place in the School Sport Victoria Under-18 Girls’ team.

She has switched to Bulleen Boomers in recent years, after playing mostly at Dandenong, and played at the National Junior Basketball Classic earlier this month, with the Boomers finishing 11th overall out of all Australian Under-18 Girls’ teams.

She tried out for the School Sport Victoria team this time last year and wasn’t chosen, but 15-year-old Cadle improved and developed this year to secure her spot.

She puts it down to her added confidence and ability to go toeto-toe with the other talls at the under-18 level.

“It is such an honour, I’m so proud, just especially to know that I’ve developed so much over just a year,” Cadle said.

“I’ve been working 10 years to do something like this… to represent the state is amazing.”

“I’m physically stronger, more aggressive on court and confident - I was the youngest last year so I was intimidated with the girls’ height and size.

“Mentally I’m more confident… more aware of my abilities and what I can and can’t do and giving it time to develop.”

Cadle is the school basketball captain at Beaconhills College and won a state 3x3 championship with classmates Tiah Conder and Grace Jeavons and Alyce Painter.

She wanted to thank Luke Sunderland and Nicole Romeo for their help with her at the Andrew Bogut Basketball Academy and her family for their support.

Cadle’s SSV team will vie for the School Sport Australia Basketball Championships, held in Townsville, Queensland from 16-23 August.

By JARROD POTTER DRIP-BY-DRIP Casey expunged Maccabi’s winning chances as the Cavaliers ran out 73-54 victors on Sunday.

Without lighting up the court or doing anything drastic, Casey flexed its muscles to show it is a powerhouse in Big V Division 2.

With Casey employing full-court defence on Maccabi, Casey was able to steal the ball frequently and keep the Warriors on the backfoot at The Fortress.

Mr Reliable Matt Witherden (27 points, 13 rebounds) was on track for a monster tally before getting some well-earned benchtime and earned the coach’s praise for his on-court knowledge and tactical ability at both ends of the court.

Casey’s golden hands managed to dish off 10-assists-tothree for the match as Jono Hawes (4 pints, 5 rebounds) and Matt Pebole (13 points, 7 rebounds) dragged in three apiece.

Coach Stewart Baird had the luxury of rotating his squad at will, with Pebole the only player to notch more than 30 minutes court time.

“That actually wasn’t preplanned - it just played out that way,” Baird said.

“We wanted a focus of full court-pressure - especially the guards - and when we do that Muss is in his early 30s… we’ve got to run bodies through… we’ve got Steve (Michalski) and Brad (Szalek) and Mick (Batley) who can do that.”

Despite getting dressed in the dark - having rocked up to the stadium wearing one yellow and one purple shoe - Casey’s Ash Szalek (7 points) pestered the Maccabi

defence from his limited court time.

With marquee matches on the horizon - including a likely battle for top spot against Shepparton Baird was pleased with his side’s effort and felt the rest would prove critical in weeks to come.

“It was good to get everyone reasonable good minutes and we’ve got Pakenham next week then Shepparton here which is showing that it’s going to be the playoff for top spot,” Baird said.

“We’ve got some huge games coming up and Pakenham they’ve had a tough year - but they’ll be up to face us, so any rest you can give the guys is great.”

The second place Cavaliers face Pakenham at Cardinia Life on Saturday evening from 6pm.

Casey women had to dig deep to not only knock off a dogged Blackburn team, but also to keep in touch with the top four.

The hard work came from Lara Pauline (12 points), Sammy Johnson (11 points) and the combined four-five force of Alex Keates, Natalie Dowdy, Jess Szalek and Cassie Bridge.

Casey improves to a 9-5 record and the Cavaliers have the weekend off before their Round 14 clash with Shepparton Gators.

Back-to-back wins for Casey’s youth men enabled Phil Thomas’ Cavaliers to stay atop the Youth League Two table with a 9-3 record.

The youth men knocked off Southern Peninsula 79-67, with Sean Mckinnon (19 points, 13 rebounds) starring in the win, and Melton 70-54 on Sunday as Ryan Sinclair (22 points) led the charge.

THE West Gippsland Cricket Association’s District Division again looms as its most competitive for season 2014/15, with clubs throughout the grade moving fast to make sure they stay ahead in the arms race.

Devon Meadows is the latest to unveil a big-name signing, with star all-rounder Matthew Hutchinson joining the Panthers for the upcoming season.

The 31-year-old is no stranger to the WGCA, having represented the association at three Country Week campaigns and winning the Glasscock Medal in its last title.

More recently, Hutchinson has carved out an impressive career at Victorian SubDistrict Cricket Association (VSDCA) club Endeavour Hills, where he claimed 33 wickets and scored 198 runs last season.

Devon Meadows club president Mick Floyd said he was delighted to snare Hutchinson’s signature.

“We’re excited to have a player of Matt’s ability join us at Pantherland,” he said.

“We think he will not only have a big impact with both bat and ball, but play an important part in the development of our group of our young players.”

For Hutchinson, the move to Glover Reserve represents a new challenge.

“It’s a great opportunity - the ground and facilities are excellent, and there are some very good players on the list,” he said.

“The club has under-achieved over the recent seasons, (and) I’m keen to help turn that around.”

Moment of greatness CRANBOURNE’S desire to be a great football side - not just good - was the driving force behind the Eagles’ magnificent six-point victory over Narre Warren at Casey Fields on Saturday.

A heart-to-heart chat on Thursday night saw the Eagles shake-off the discord from seven days earlier against Pakenham, transforming back into the tight and tough unit of seasons gone by. A Ryan Jones goal, in the dying stages, ended the Magpies’ record-breaking run of 44 consecutive wins and breathed new life into the 2014 Casey Cardinia Football League season.

Cranbourne was harder at the contest than the Magpies in the first term which saw it dominate both the tackling and possession count.

The Eagles were fired up all over the ground, with defenders Brandon Osborne, Matt Rus and Nick Barker linking beautifully with the midfield brigade of Michael Boland, Ryan Davey, Max Gearon and Curtis Barker to give their forwards a chance.

Michael Theodoridis kept up his end of the bargain, using his pace and aggressive nature to terrorise the Magpies defence.

The Eagles took a 22-point lead to the first break before the Magpies steadily cut the margin,

back to 17 at half time, then again to 10 at threequarter time. The last quarter was a cracker!

The Magpies are a champion team - their record proves that - and they lifted their rating to take a 14-point lead midway through the final term. The Magpies looked set for their eighth consecutive win over their arch-rivals ... but the Eagles responded in kind.

Two quick goals saw the margin cut back to a point before a Jones free kick in the goal square gave the Eagles the lead which they held until the final siren. The match-winning goal capped off a best-on-ground display from Jones, who kicked four from the wing, while Theodoridis matched his team-mate’s output.

The Magpies were gallant in defeat. Jackson Parker led the way with three goals from the midfield while full-back Ryan Morrison - who did a great job on Cranbourne champ Marc Holt - joined Hayden Stagg and Col McNamara as the Magpies’ best.

Hampton Park finally had reason to cheer, scoring its first win of the season with a commanding 50-point win over Keysborough at Robert Booth Reserve.

Doveton pulled off the surprise of the round at its home ground at Robinson Oval with its lockdown nature leading to a low-scoring one-point win over Berwick.

The Doves looked in for a long day as the Wickers bounced out of the blocks with four firstquarter goals - but they kicked just two more for the match as Doves dug in for the fight.

Under-19 player Mitch Pierce kicked two on debut for the Doves, while Andrew Green and Michael Laszczyk - who kicked the only goal of the final quarter - were other valuable contributors. Nathan Waite slotted three for the Wickers and skipper Madi Andrews was once again superb.

Pakenham made it seven on the trot with an impressive 31-point away victory over Beaconsfield.

The Lions were just too aggressive and too switched on for the Eagles who kicked late goals to cut the margin to a flattering size. Full-forward Daniel Fry kicked six for the Lions while Dom Paynter, Dean Blake and Cory Lenders were dominant through the midfield and Nathan Brown used his experience to full effect down back.

ROC survived an after-the-siren shot at goal from Tooradin skipper Michael Hobbs to defeat the Seagulls by two-points in a scrappy, but close affair at Starling Road.

The Seagulls led by two points at the final break, but a Neil Adams goal gave the Kangaroos the edge they needed to bank a crucial four points. Tom Marks, Travis Woodfield and Blair Allan were the best performers for the winners while inter-league star Matt Wade continued his outstanding form for the Seagulls.

The Scorpions started brilliantly - slotting goals were Luke Tapscott, Tim Smith, Nathan Page and one from a big pack-flyer via Jack Fitzpatrick to take a comprehensive lead at the first break.

The Rebels started to slip out of the Scorpionsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; grasp thereafter - kicking their way back into the contest in the second term before thumping on six-goals-to-one after the main break.

The fleet-footed Rebels marched away with the 20-point win on the back of exceptional games from Nick Rippon (34 possessions, 10 tackles) and Trent Dumont (32 possessions, 6 tackles).

It could have been much worse for Casey with the Rebels shanking 12 behinds in the second half.

Max Gawn had his hands full in an engaging ruckbattle with American import Eric Wallace - with the former basketball player making great strides towards an AFL debut with North Melbourne.

IDENTIFIED as swimmers to guide the next generation, the Casey TigerSharks Swimming Club had a number of athletes selected for the Swimming Victoria Development Squad.

Nine TigerSharks will join the development squad for a series of camps and screenings throughout the rest of the year, leading up towards Age National Championships in early 2015.

TigerSharks head coach Ben Hiddlestone said it was pleasing to have swimmers at all levels stepping up to the state-level system. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very good to have a couple at the open level; we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t create dynasties as we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t draft kids like in football,â&#x20AC;? Wild child smartens up

By DEREK OGDEN THE wild child WRX of the Subaru school, born 20 years ago, has matured into a smart, no nonsense sports sedan.

Not that the performance has been toned down - thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still plenty to keep rusted-on Rex lovers from crossing the street to the opposition.

With the fourth generation WRX, Subaru has come up with arguably the best handling version of the pocketrocket at its most competitive entry price.

It has been lifted a cog to six, and for the first time in 10 years, there is an automatic WRX, featuring a Sport Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) with an eightspeed manual mode.

A major interior upgrade and a lift in standard equipment accompany the advanced technology in all grades.

Neat and tidy - thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the only way to describe the new WRXâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s looks.

The Subaru WRX... rough edges are all in the past. 122415 automotive ostentation such as gaping air intakes just for show and brightly coloured brake calipers.

Inside is no different, with plain, if slightly sombre, decor and a simple layout for controls and instruments.

No fey ambient lighting or scented air freshener here, just workman-like surroundings.

Black cloth upholstery is lifted by contrasting red stitching, instruments and switches are lit to make them instantly approachable for info and oper-

ation, while the leather wrapped steering wheel has a flat bottom, following the latest sports fashion.

Making its debut in the new WRX is the 2.0-litre horizontally-opposed FA-Series direct-injection turbocharged engine.

A twin-cam unit, it is square in its measurements - 86.0 mm x 86.0 mm bore and stroke. It produces 197 kW of power at 5600 rpm and 350 Nm of torque between 2400 and 5200 rpm and Subaru tells us it is 11.5 per cent

more fuel efficient and produces 13.8 per cent less carbon dioxide than the superseded 2.5-litre unit.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the option of a six-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable transmission with manual overrides, the latter giving eight forward ratios by way of paddles on the steering wheel.

In line with all new Subarus, the WRX has earned a five-star safety rating from ANCAP, the score of 35.85 out of a possible 37 making it the high-

est ranking Subaru.

The car has an added driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s knee airbag, a significant increase in the use of high tensile steels and better brakes and, like all Subarus, the new model features the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own data dot security system as a theft deterrent.

A first for the WRX is a multifunction colour display situated in the upper centre of the instrument panel, for easy driver visibility.

It provides a wide variety of information, including turbo pressure, audio functions, fuel consumption, an Eco evaluation, air-conditioning status and reversing camera screen.

A new instrument cluster has a three-dimensional look, with red illumination and white needles of the gauges adding to the sporty feel.

A 3.5-inch colour LCD provides information on driving time, SI-Drive info (with CVT) digital speedometer, cruise control, odometer, trip computer and Eco gauge.
