Murder mysteries

By MELISSA MEEHAN TWO unsolved murders stick in the mind of Leading Senior Constable Dignis Kamoen’s when he looks back on his long career.

Forty years in a job is a long time.

But the deaths of Cuckoo restaurant owner Willie Koeppen and former local newspaper advertising manager Nanette Ellis will always stick in his mind - especially because their murderers have yet to be brought to justice.

Last week Leading Sen Const Kamoen celebrated 40 years service in Victoria Police, and 33 years at Belgrave Police Station.

Formerly based at Ferntree Gully, Leading Sen Const Kamoen moved to the Belgrave station in 1981 because he and his wife decided that night shifts weren’t for him.

“Belgrave was close, and didn’t have a night shift at the time, so it seemed like a good fit,” he said. “Six months later, I was back on night shift.”

When asked why he stayed at Belgrave for so long - when others had come and gone to other stations, his answer was simple.

“I was brought up here,” he said. “I like the scenery and everything - it’s home.”

He said there were many memories of his time on the force, including two weeks in Queensland for a court case after he found a woman wanted for a shooting. She was found by local police hiding in the hills.

“I got a trip to Queensland once,” he said.

“There was an armed robbery in Queensland, and there was a person shot dead - but we found her hiding out in Monbulk.

“So I was able to go up for two weeks for the hearings.”

But it wasn’t all interstate trips for him.

He recalls a cold and dreary night in the 1980s when a father and son had come into the station.

“It was obvious that the kid had broken into the place, he didn’t say that, but he said he had been in a property and seen a body wrapped in plastic,” he said. “So we went to the property, and sure enough we found the body of a woman perfectly preserved in plastic - apparently the daughter couldn’t let go of her mother.

“All jobs weren’t like that - but that sticks in your memory as a bit weird and different.”

He has no plans to retire yet, so he has more time to create many other memories.

THEY may not have won the Jamie Oliver Pop Up Kitchen competition but they cooked up a lot of interest.

The Hills Food Frontier (THFF) is a community inspired good food project which is focused on inspring the people of the Dandenong Ranges to cook, share and learn about good food.

Holly Desmond, Laura Spirt and Shakti McLaren joined forces to head the project.

“We want to increase promotion of projects and businesses that provide good food options and strengthen good food activities in the hills,” Ms Desmond said.

“The Hills Food Frontier believes that good food is nutritious, wholesome, affordable and, where possible, grown ethically by local farmers and producers.

“This ‘Frontier’ is an imaginary line that is drawn around the hills community that ensures that local good food is well promoted to locals and tourists, readily available and sustainable.”

Bird study group hailed

By JODIE SYMONDS SHERBROOKE Lyrebird Study Group was thanked for their feathery work.

The contribution by volunteers has been acknowledged for their involvement in helping protect and understand the lyrebird population in the Dandenong Ranges National Park.

Following National Volunteer Week, Parks Victoria team leader Damien Van Heeswyk said the group had been running for 56 years.

The 10 volunteers have conducted regular lyrebird surveys, raised awareness by giving talks and providing guided walks for the community.

“The dedication and passion of these people is inspiring, particularly given they are conducting annual surveys each year at dawn and

in winter,” Mr Van Heeswyk said.

“The data recorded over all these years has given us a detailed picture of the lyrebird population and how it has changed over time. It also helps inform how we manage the park including how we do tasks such as controlling foxes.”

Secretary and recorder of the survey group Jan Incoll said the group had volunteered about 1857 hours into surveying the lyrebirds.

“In 2000 there were 25 male lyrebirds in Sherbrooke and this figure has more than doubled compared to last year,” Ms Incoll said.

“It feels great to know they are doing so well to see them going back into areas that we have weeded and cleared of rubbish,” she said.

Last year, volunteers contributed a record of 218,970 volunteer hours across the 180 Victoria Parks.

THE Emerald SES Auxiliary Unit received a much-needed boost in both finances and morale, thanks to unit member Jim Paxton’s mother.

After many chats with her son Jim, Mary Paxton decided she would like to offer a donation to pay for cooking equipment required by the newly formed auxiliary.

The group has been set up to primarily cater for SES members who are involved in extended storm or rescue operations, with the heart-warming aim of providing them with much-needed sustenance.

The group also gets involved in promotional activities such as Funfest, Run with Thomas and the recent Puffing Billy Great Train Race.

Among the items provided by the generous donation are two microwave ovens, an electric frypan, pots, knives, and much more. The Narre Warren Good Guys store has also received plaudits for providing the hard-bargaining Jim a better-than-usual discount.

Acting Controller Ben Owen has praised the impact provided by Mrs Paxton’s donation.

“It’s increased our capabilities to provide healthy option meals for the volunteers. I think Mary contributes greatly to the community and she has definitely helped increase our abilities to respond to state emergency situations,” he said.

This is not that first time that Mary Paxton has put her kind heart to use.

Two years ago, the Emerald SES also benefited from funds donated from Mrs Paxton to provide for a pole saw storage box which subsequently enabled the unit to carry equipment on the roof rack of their 4WD vehicle.

But Mrs Paxton’s generosity does not stop there; last year Mary donated a high pressure washer to keep the fleet of vehicles clean.

She said despite TVAG being given a mandate from the town to fight the McDonald’s development, it was not a single issue group and its job was to promote the town and help it grow.

“We’re seen as the ugly ducking, but that doesn’t mean it can’t change. We need to get everyone together and this meeting is just a step towards that.”

Mr Kenyon’s community planning experience includes projects in Australia, New Zealand, North America, Europe and the Middle East.

The workshops are part of the council’s commitment to supporting

communities to develop their own plans.

Already Mount Evelyn and the WHYLD group of towns in the Yarra Valley have developed community plans and are putting them into practice.

Workshops will be held at the Monbulk Living and Learning Centre on Wednesday 21 May from 10am to noon and at Tecoma Primary School Hall on Wednesday 21 May from 6.30pm to 9pm.

“It’s just a waiting game.

“She’s my only grandchild and I don’t want her parents to go through what I went through when my son died from it.”

IT’S every mother’s nightmare - and easy to do.

But when Rebecca Warren locked her eight-month-old daughter Georgia in the car last Wednesday outside the Monbulk Aquatic Centre she was thankful for the fast acting emergency crews.

“I can’t even think about how it happened,” Ms Warren said.

“I remember putting the keys in my nappy bag, then went to get the pram out and then somehow the door closed.

“Oh my god, I’ve locked my daughter in the car - I was screaming.”

Looking back on the drama now, Ms Warren said that the situation was very dramatic, but praised the quick response from local police and fire crews.

“Georgia was amazing, at the start she was crying, but then she settled,” Ms Warren said. “She was just looking at all the people surrounding the car - I think she was fascinated by the firies in yellow.”

Monbulk police sergeant Mark Knight said police, emergency services and a mechanic all arrived at the car park not long after the call was made.

“The Hyundai car was tough for us to get into, so I called the RACV to help us out,” Sgt Knight said.

“This, hopefully, acts as a reminder to other parents out there to ensure that they keep the keys on them when they turn off the vehicle.”

Emergency crews were also called to Mount Evelyn on Thursday when another child was accidently locked in a car.

SHE is a grandmother on a mission, and Ferntree Gully resident Jenny Scott says she and other campaigners are half way there.

Her 17-year-old granddaughter Bianca suffers from rare ilness Atypical Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome (aHUS) and without life-saving medicine Soliris being placed on the PBS, she can’t afford to keep taking it.

The medication for the ultra-rare blood disease has still not been guaranteed to be subsidised by the Federal Government despite a recent recommendation from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC).

Soliris, the most effective treatment available for treating the illness, was recommended by PBAC to be listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) at a meeting last month but pricing negotiations between the Federal Government and Soliris manufacturer Alexion Pharmaceuticals are still ongoing, with seemingly no end in sight.

Without subsidisation Soliris is estimated to cost Australian patients up to $500,000 a year.

Federal MP for La Trobe Jason Wood, who recently met again with Ms Scott said the process of having Soliris placed on the PBS was halfway to being completed.

“It’s great to hear that the PBAC has recommended Soliris to be listed on the PBS, news that we’ve been waiting to hear for a while now,” he said.

“Unfortunately, though, we’re only about 50 per cent of the way through the process.

TECOMA residents are invited to have their say on the future of the town at a meeting on Wednesday night.

International community planning expert Peter Kenyon is running a number free workshops to help Yarra Ranges residents develop a vision for their town.

The process will involve communities coming together to develop a vision of what their neighbourhood will be like in five years’ time.

Tecoma Village Action Group (TVAG) president Nicole Gale said that it was important for Tecoma to concentrate on its future.

“This workshop will give all people living in and using services/businesses in Tecoma a chance to get involved and have a say,” she said.

“It is a wonderful opportunity to network and work together.”

Ms Gale said it was wonderful to see the council already putting money into Tecoma, and having a plan meant that it would be easier for the town to get funding in the long run.

“We’re in such a big shire and it’s easy to get lost in the crowd,” she said.

“The plan would include things like increasing the safety of road crossings, beautifying the town and not just being a town that people drive through.”

A report prepared for the Clean Energy Council said that abolishing the Renewable Energy Target would mean that Australian households would pay more than half a billion a year extra for electricity in 2020 and up to $1.4 billion each year beyond that.

ment will probably abolish the RET (the target is currently for 20 per cent of Australia’s energy production to be from renewable sources by 2020) or

will reduce it. While this would make some power companies happy, it is not in the interests of the community or the environment.

The Renewable Energy Target has encouraged investment in wind farms and solar power, helped provide thousands of jobs and has helped reduce the wholesale price of electricity.

‘Litter magnet’ attracts attention

YARRA Ranges councillors have endorsed the council’s draft Child and Youth Strategy for the next 10 years, putting it out for public comment.

Mayor Fiona McAllister, at the 13 May council meeting, said she was thrilled to see the development of the strategy and the council’s commitment to better outcomes for young people and youth.

The strategy was put forward by the director of Social and Economic Development as “a key council priority” with a vision that “Yarra Ranges will be a place where every child and young person will be

family violence.

Comparative data is given for 13 to 25-year-olds against the Victorian state averages on issues such as mental health, bullying, academic outcomes, alcohol consumption, sexual activity and crime.

Information is also given on vulnerability and wellbeing, service gaps and youth mental health which was identified as a key priority with a “high rate” of psychiatric hospitalisation, along with very high rates of reported psychological distress.

In terms of infrastructure, the report states that the availability of childcare and medical services were routinely reported to be in short sup-

able to thrive, reach their potential and actively participate in decision making”.

Action plans that support identified outcomes around children, young people and their families getting the support they need in a timely way, adequate infrastructure, access to services and improved outcomes for those experiencing vulnerability were mapped out to achieve these goals.

The strategy identifies three regions - hills, urban and valley, with data revealing diverse needs.

The data ranges from population forecasts to breastfeeding and immunisation, to gender equality and

ply, with access to tertiary education a current gap that could widen.

“The data for us (as a shire) is still very mixed,” Cr McAllister said.

“We know there are pockets of disadvantage and pockets of high need, and this should never drop off our agenda.”

The draft strategy is open for 42 days from Wednesday 14 May for comment and can be viewed in the council agenda of 13 May as an attachment.

Holy Fools does care

In fact, these issues are just as occurring, sometimes even more prevalent, but are less visible in the suburban areas of Melbourne, including in the Yarra Ranges.

For five years, Lilydalebased Holy Fools Inc has provided unconditional care and support for people on and around the streets of Lilydale and the Yarra Ranges.

Holy Fools CEO Neal Taylor said it all started back in 2009 when there was a need for community meals in Croydon.

“I was involved as a chaplain, and we needed an identity and that’s how Holy Fools was born,” Mr Taylor said.

“We have extensive expe-

rience providing support services, and being a catalyst for social change, to people experiencing, or at risk of homelessness, living in poverty, or experiencing issues of injustice,” Mr Taylor said.

“We do this through working in the areas of positive community development, social justice, homelessness, and housing.”

On Wednesdays, Mr Taylor and other volunteers provide a free lunch to the homeless in Lilydale’s Melba Park.

It only started three months ago, and already has a number of people attending.

“The idea is to provide a kind ear, friendly face and safe place,” he said.

“We’re averaging 15-16 people each week, about half of them are homeless, as in living

rough, and the others are either couch surfing or sleeping under the roof of other family members.”

He said as well as providing a free barbecue lunch, Matt’s Cafe, a free community meal had served in excess of 14,000 nutritious two-course meals each Friday fortnight.

Those community meals draw an average of 70-80 people each time.

“Many of our friends who attend have been coming since we began, and we pride ourselves that we are not a soup kitchen that just feeds people, rather that we invite all these people to join us in a meal, as friends,” he said.

THE No McDonald’s in the Dandenong Ranges group (NMITDR) has called on Yarra Ranges Council to impose fines for what it claims are breaches of VCAT conditions on McDonald’s at Tecoma.

NMITDR spokesperson Garry Muratore made a presentation to Yarra Ranges Council on 13 May claiming breaches to do with signage and the contractor allegedly operating out of the permitted hours.

“Although the illegal signage did not go ahead, it is believed that the Yarra Ranges Council has yet to act on this breach,” Mr Muratore said.

He called on the council to do an audit of the building and to take action on complaints about lighting, litter and smell.

“People can hear every order from the drive-through and Tecoma station is a litter magnet,” he said.

He raised concerns about what he claimed were insufficient line markings on Burwood Highway and illegal right-hand turns by McDonald’s customers.

When questioned by councillors McAllister and Cliff, Director Planning, Building and Health, Andrew Paxton, responded saying that council officers went out to the site any time a complaint was lodged.

“The way we work, is we ask people to comply and if they don’t, we follow up,” he said.

He said the council’s traffic officers had been out to assess the site which, he said, complied with the permit.

“We can follow up with VicRoads if there is a problem with line marking and left hand turns,” he said.

He undertook to follow up on the light pollution claims and said he would also look into whether issues with smell were a council responsibility or EPA.

By REBECCA BILLS PRE-SCHOOLERS at Sassafras Pre-School have enjoyed dance sessions from Hart School of Dance to tie in with their community learning.

Pre-school teacher Debbie Haberfield says the children are currently doing an inquiry project with a focus on what they perceive the word ‘community’ to mean. “It started with what the preschool community is and now it has moved to what is local community,� she said. “Hart School of Dance runs next door and they approached us and asked if they could run some complimentary sessions with the students. “It’s worked out really well as we have been able to make this a wonderful local community link for the children.�

Hart School of Dance owner and teacher Brooke McDowell said the dance school had always done a lot for the community and she had a few mornings during the week spare, so she wanted to offer her time to the pre-school. “It’s really important for kids to get involved in physical activity and it doesn’t matter if it’s dance or sport,� she said. “If you get involved in a community sport or activity at a young age you are more likely to grow up with a closer connection to the community. “Also being physical throughout those younger years fosters that community spirit and the kids have that support and friendships that are harboured through team activities.�

Not mates’ rates LAST year the council elections were very strongly contested over the rates and property valuations and the (then new) councillors vowed to not let rates get out of hand again.

Now I read that the upcoming budget will require a “modest� 4.8 per cent rise in rates and continue to do so over the next four years (that’s a 20 per cent plus rise in rates over four years), and, is supported by all the councillors.

How can the councillors allow this to keep happening? The shire budgets should be set to be a maximum increase of CPI/inflation, not an arbitrary number that they think is okay at the time. How do they expect ratepayers to keep paying increases over and above CPI when they are (at best) only gaining wage improvements of that level if they are lucky.

The budget documents are currently up for public review; have your say before they lock them in on 5 June.

Sooki hosting The Last Drinks

By REBECCA BILLS SHE’S been named the jewel of dark country blues and is bringing her band The Last Drinks to Belgrave’s Sooki Lounge.

Cash Savage is transporting the soulful confessions of the band’s latest album The Hypnotiser to the stage in the final performance of the Golden Wolves tour.

The last time Cash and her band were in town, they purchased three chickens from a chicken farm in the Hills.

“We’ve had them for two years now, however they won’t be coming with us,” she said.

“It’s hard enough to get the seven band members around, let alone the three chickens.”

Cash said after the tour the group will be taking a few months off so they can write and get ready to record their third album next year.

“We’ve been touring solidly for eight months, and you get excited but very used to playing the songs, but when you do the last show in the back of your mind, you are thinking ‘this is the last time’ and you give it your all,” she said.

“This is our first time playing at Sooki, but my mates played there the other day and loved it, we are really excited.

“I was blown away by Hugo’s work when I first saw it at Upwey High School. His collection of digital prints and paintings are raw, edgy, authentic, and brave,” Ms Middleton said.

“The fusion of uninhibited mark making and clashing colours in his work is eyecatching and has undercurrents of aggressive playfulness. What also caught my attention were the clues that litter the canvas and give a glimpse into Hugo’s thoughts and observations of the world around him,” she added.

Having graduated from VCE last year, the talented

Racz draws his inspiration from his graffiti background again enticing comparisons to the revered Basquiat.

“My style is a lo-fi sort of grungy, graffiti inspired portraiture. I kind of look at society pretty negative in general, but at the same time I try and keep my artwork light hearted and colourful, so it try to keep it fifty-fifty in that way,” Racz said.

It has been a time of transition for Racz. As he looks to get into a fine art tertiary course next year, his first solo exhibition, aptly titled, “Tabula Rasa” which, as Racz explains, refers to “starting again”, appears much closer on the horizon.

“Having finished school last year, I feel as though I have moved onto a new chapter in my life. My routine has totally changed and my mind is fresh, it’s as though I am starting again; a clean slate.”

His exhibition opens officially on Friday 23 May at 6.30pm at the Burrinja Cultural Centre and runs until 15 June.

Hospital slashes list on elective surgery

This was the philosophy of the late American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. In 1988 at the age of 27, Basquiat passed away. Although he is gone, his legacy lives on through the works of 19-yearold Hugo Racz.

Basquiat used his works to spread a political message, addressing issues such as colonialism and support for class struggle, and his paintings were a “springboard to deeper truths about the individual”.

In much the same way, Racz’s works delve deeper than what merely meets the eye.

“The way people socialise and interact with each other is pretty interesting and this has influenced my work for sure I try and make a spiritual and psychological manifestation which externalises from within with the characters that I’m drawing,” Racz said.

The investment will also build on the Coalition Government initiatives that are already underway such as reducing myki travel costs for Zone 1 and 2 commuters to the price of a Zone 1 fare (saving of up to $1200 per year) and a $3.24 million safety improvement project on the Warburton Highway at Launching Place.

ment’s strong budget would help secure a better future for the Gembrook community.

“Premier Denis Napthine and the Coalition Government team are building a better Victoria by delivering a strong budget with record investment in roads, rail, health and education, ensuring growth, jobs and opportunities in Gembrook.

“This is in stark contrast to the risk that Daniel Andrews and Labor pose to Victoria’s economy and prosperity. Victorians cannot afford more Labor cost blow-outs like the desalination plant and myki,” Mr Battin said.

A DANDENONG Ranges hospital has slashed the number of people on their elective surgery waiting list by 39 per cent over the first three months of the year compared to the same quarter in 2013, according to a state public health report.

Eastern Health’s Angliss Hospital reduced the number of patients on their elective surgery waiting list from 871 at the end of the March 2013 quarter to 532 at the end of the same quarter this year.

The Victorian Health Services Performance report found the hospital admitted 861 elective surgery patients during the March quarter, up on the 629 waiting list admissions a year earlier.

Hospitals around the state also saw a healthy drop in the number of people waiting for elective surgery over the three-month period, increasing admissions by 18 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2013.

Angliss Hospital’s treatment response times also improved during the quarter, with 100 per cent of Category 1 patients being treated immediately while almost 90 per cent of Category 2 patients were seen within 10 minutes of arriving at the hospital’s emergency department.

The health report also revealed

that ambulance transfer times have improved in the March 2014 quarter, with 87 per cent of ambulances across the state transferring patients within the benchmark time of 40 minutes, up from 79 per cent a year earlier.

The Angliss Hospital was up on the state-wide benchmark for ambulance transfers, delivering over 99 per cent of patients to the hospital within the target 40 minutes during the March quarter.

Health Minister David Davis said the improvements to the sector reflected the Coalition Government’s commitment to building a healthier Victoria.

“This report confirms that the recommendations of the Ambulance Transfer Taskforce are being successfully implemented, a strategy designed to accept patients more quickly and move them through the emergency department,” Mr Davis said.

The Victorian Coalition Government this week announced a $190 million boost for elective surgery as part of the 2014/15 State Budget.

“The March elective surgery improvement is the result of the Coalition Government’s determination a year earlier to reverse the $107 million mid-year hospital funding cut by the former Gillard Federal Government,” Mr Davis said.

IT’S a company with one of the longest histories in the Ferntree Gully community and continues to be loved to this day.

Jack DeCoite, a blacksmith and farrier, commenced business in Ferntree Gully in 1924 having moved from Traralgon.

In 1944 Mr DeCoite purchased the site on the corner of Burwood Highway and Ferntree Gully Road.

Jack then was joined in business by his two sons Robert (Bob) and John after war service in the navy.

This was the beginnings of R & J DeCoite Pty Ltd. DeCoite continued to grow and move with the times.

From the early beginnings as farriers and wheelwrights, they commenced to build truck bodies for local businesses.

This was in the days that trucks only came with motor, cabin and chassis and all bodies were then built on.

The company supplied steel to local builders, farmers and businesses and built and repaired farm machinery for local market gardeners and started to fabricate wrought iron for the expanding housing in the Ferntree Gully area.

In 1975 the business moved down Burwood Highway to its present site.

David DeCoite, Bob’s youngest son, joined the business the same year.

David who is a qualified blacksmith continues to work as a blacksmith turning out creative and eye catching wrought iron.

David was later joined by sister Rochelle then brother Neil, along with

Rev-head ready to roll

By DAVID ALLEGRETI AMONG the competitors at the 2014 Subaru BMX National Championships in Shepparton was four-year-old Ferntree Gully boy Rylee Clarke.

The six day event, held at the Shepparton BMX Club track on 29th starting gates drop 1900 times with more than 1300 participants take to the track to compete across 54 events ranging from mini-wheelers (two to four years) to 50+ age groups.

Rylee rubbed shoulders with internationally renowned competitors such as reigning world champion Caroline Buchanan and 2012 Olympic silver medallist Sam Willoughby.

At such a tender age, Rylee is already showing potential to be a future superstar of BMX. The talented young rider competed in the mini wheeler’s race and completed it with a great deal of enthusiasm, much to the delight of his mother, Tracy.

“He did very well, he loved it - so much so that he was very upset when it all finished,” she said with a laugh.

Participants ranging from the age of three to 64, representing clubs from all across the country, braved the cold and wet conditions to compete in the prestigious event.

“His older brothers ride,” said Tracy as she describes how Rylee first got into the sport.

“We noticed that at the open meets they had mini wheelers racing and he participated and instantly loved it so we bought him a bike and a little helmet and outfit that came with it.

“Later on he got offered to do na-

After appearing on Chanel 7’s Sunrise the morning after his event, many are taking notice of the gifted young racer who is set to be upgrading to the “sprockets” class which involves riding an 18 inch bike and participating in proper racing.

Not bad for a boy who only just started as a three-year-old and has barely been riding for a year.

The Knox BMX club nurtures young talents such as Rylee by running mini wheeler events at the club on a Friday night.

BMX Australia president Barry Knight has praised the event as a tremendous success and he was quick to praise the efforts of the two communities involved; those from the BMX fraternity and the locals, headed by the Shepparton Council.

“We have had a wonderfully safe week of racing at what is a great

facility,” Knight said.

“Everyone from our volunteer officials to the competitors, sponsors like our principal partner Subaru, council, BMXA staff and the local community have contributed to make this event one of the most successful BMX National Championships in memory.

“We also launched a new and progressive era for the sport with three days and a night of live streaming that broadcast our great sport around the world.”

A post produced highlights package of three days will appear on Fox Sports in coming weeks with more content to appear on BMX TV, BMX Australia’s YouTube channel.

Early forecasts are predicting that figures between $7-8million are set be injected into the local Goulburn Valley economy as a result of the successful event.

The 2015 BMX National Championships will be held on the Brisbane Supercross track at the Sleeman Sports Centre.

Gutsy play for narrow win YARRA VALLEY MOUNTAIN DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION A GRADE NETBALL - ROUND 6 A GREAT win from Warby which got out to a narrow three goal lead at the first break and then maintained that lead throughout the game.

The biggest margin was just five goals and that was at the last change in Warby’s favour.

Mount Evelyn did battle hard in the last but it was to be Warby’s day as it celebrated with a gutsy four goal victory.

It started the game well with an 18 goal to five first quarter and backed that up with a 19 goal to 10 second term and its lead was 22 goals at the half.

The second half was very even as Olinda did show some real spirit and, in fact, outscored Belgrave by one goal in the second half but it was all too late because Olinda’s first half had let it down and Belgrave was just a class above early in this match which proved

the difference.

Upwey started well with a 17 goal to nine quarter and really did look the goods.

The second quarter saw Wandin get back into the game with a nine goals to six and at half time it was Upwey by five goals.

The third term was an even affair with both sides scoring 11 goals.

The last quarter saw Wandin try everything to eat into the lead which it did do to a degree but just couldn’t get through Upwey’s defence enough to pull off a victory.

Upwey Tecoma 41 d Wandin 38 EMERALD got its first win of the season with a fantastic come from behind win over Monbulk.

Monbulk led by seven goals at half time and did look a bit slicker with the ball but Emerald found something in

the third as it produced its best quarter of the year scoring 15 goals to seven and took a one goal lead into the last.

Emerald was really good in the last as it scored 12 goals to eight but controlled the game nicely and won in a very professional manner.

SECOND DIVISION A GRADE NETBALL Emerald 45 d Monbulk Hawks 40 AN ALL-round good performance from Seville players who had it their own way in this game.

Seville got out to a 21 goal lead at the half and was in total control.

Alex wasn’t bad in the third as it worked very hard but it was still Seville that won the term 11 goals to five.

Seville finished the game in style with a 21 goal to four last term to completely dominate in the final stages of the game and produce a 42 goal win.

Olinda all the way FINE conditions greeted all players in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Community Bank Football Netball League.

Division one now has Monbulk on top only by a percentage over Olinda Ferny Creek while in Division two, Yarra Glen now has a onegame break on Seville.

While in A Grade Netball, Upwey Tecoma is one game clear on top while in second division Yarra Glen holds top spot by two points.

Next Saturday, the YVMDFNL will take on the Mallee Football League in the WorkSafe Country Championships.

This game is being held at Woori Yallock Football Ground on Saturday 24 May. The game starts at 12.30pm and will be streamed live through Valley Vision.

Olinda Ferny Creek 14.14 (98) d Belgrave 12.8 (80) THE margin may have been only 18 points at the final siren, but it was always Olinda that was in control of this game.

The first quarter was goal-forgoal and Olinda took a seven-point lead into the first change.

This game was really won in the second quarter when Olinda slammed on six goals-to- two and went into half time with a 31-point buffer.

Belgrave did claw their way back in the second half, but every time they threw a bit of a challenge at Olinda’s lead, the latter would respond and always held about a three-goal lead right throughout the second half.

This was enough to record a good victory and which sees them second on the ladder and only percentage off top spot.

They will also be thanking Rob Hartfield for a best-on-ground performance with eight of their 14 goals. Warby, on the other hand, will be kicking themselves for letting one get away.

Mount Evelyn did lead at every change, thanks to more efficient kicking at the goal mouth, at half time Mount Evelyn led by five points but actually had five less scoring shots.

Warby was coming hard and they booted 3.1 for the quarter but unfortunately for them time ran out and Mount Evelyn celebrated a onepoint triumph.

Monbulk 13.14 (92) d Emerald 6.8 (44) THIS wasn’t the greatest game one could have witnessed, but it was a game that Monbulk will be happy enough to walk away with the points.

Emerald is yet to win a game and just couldn’t find enough options up forward to give them any real chance here.

The final scoreboard probably flattered Emerald a little, in fact as Monbulk weren’t as efficient as they would have liked to be, but all in all it’s another win that keeps them on top of the ladder.

Upwey Tecoma 22.14 (146) d Wandin 14.14 (98) THESE sides usually produce classic encounters when they meet each other and for three quarters, this game was a ripper.

Upwey had a narrow lead at quarter time by just three points.

Wandin was extremely wasteful in the second, booting 2.8 to Upwey’s 1.4 but it was enough to grab a seven-point lead at the long break.

The third quarter was a beauty, Upwey booted 8.2 and regained the lead at three-quarter time, but Wandin wasn’t far away as they booted 5.2 and the margin was just 11 points going into the last.

The scene was set for a great last quarter, but it was to be for only one club and that was Upwey as they ran Wandin ragged and booted nine goals-to-three in a great display.

Upwey’s Daniel Waters was on fire down forward as he finished the day with 10 majors.

In a game that looked as though it might go down to the wire it ended up being a pretty comprehensive win to Upwey on the back of some last-quarter dominance.

UNDER 18s Olinda Ferny Creek 15.11 (101) d Belgrave 7.4 (46) OLINDA ended up winning this game quite comfortably but they did take a little while to shake Belgrave off.

Olinda started the stronger and went to a 19-point lead at quarter time, that lead only grew to 21 points at the half and Belgrave were still in it but Olinda put the game beyond doubt in the third with a four goal to one quarter and the margin was out to 41 points.

Olinda outscored Belgrave five goals-to-three in the last to record a solid victory.

Mount Evelyn 24.16 (160) d Warburton Millgrove 0.6 (6) THIS was just complete domination from Mount Evelyn from start to finish, the margin flew out to 11 goals by half time, and it was just a matter of how much Mount Evelyn was going to win by.

Warby did defend hard in the third and only allowed four majors scored against them but they just couldn’t get the ball forward.

The last quarter really opened up for Mount Evelyn as they rammed home 10 goals-to-nil to win emphatically.

Emerald 12.9 (8) d Monbulk 4.3 (27) THIS was a good win to Emerald in a game that didn’t really reach any great heights.

The first half was a bit of a struggle early, but Emerald broke the shackles in the second quarter and got out to a 28-point lead at the half.

The third quarter was Emerald’s best as they scored five goals to Monbulk’s one to put the game out of reach as they jumped out to a 52-point lead.

The last quarter was a bit of a non event as both sides scored two goals but that wouldn’t bother Emerald as they walk away with a good 54-point win.

Upwey Tecoma 16.19 (115) d Wandin 6.9 (45) A TERRIFIC even four quarter performance from Upwey which produced a 70-point victory.

Upwey never had a big scoring quarter but their defence was superb as Wandin found it almost impossible to score.

In fact, Upwey held Wandin scoreless in the third while they booted 4.6, and by three- quarter time the margin was beyond 10 goals.

The last quarter was a little more even but it was still in Upwey’s favour three goals-to- two which sees them sitting comfortably in third position.

Mixed bag for Monbulk A GREAT day’s footy at the scenic Wesburn ground saw some great footy played by the Monbulk Under 9, 10, 12, 14 and 16 sides.

All the teams accounted themselves well and Monbulk came away with wins in the Under 14s and Under 16s.

A great contest in the Under 12s with Wesburn collecting the points. Highlights for Monbulk include nine goals for Daniel Salan and Ben Watson four goals in the Under 16s and some great team performances across the grades. Monbulk’s Under 9s and Under 10s continue to impress all with their improvement each week.

Ben Balfour (19) set about dismantling the course and the rest of the opposition when he amassed +8 to head the field by five points.

Broc Reynolds won the Stockdale and Leggo nearest the pin on the fourth, Peter Clowes did the same on the seventh, Allan Ecclestone picked up the daily double on the 12th and 13th while Peter Stevens shoved the pro pin money into his pocket after a beautiful shot on the 18th.

Wednesday’s Obliquely Faded Golf (OFG) was a par event with an oblique rule change.
