A LACK of communication has left a town divided, with one half of Selby receiving sewerage networks and the other set to wait 15 years for theirs.

Residents in Selby and Belgrave are split, with one half of the town covered by South East Water, while the other is serviced by Yarra Valley Water.

Julie Howard-Whale, who lives in the Yarra Valley Water side of town, contacted the Mail after she realised that the town was receiving works under the Sewerage Backlog Program from South East Water - but only one part.

Frustrated that the works would only affect one side of the town, leaving 170 properties in the area waiting, Ms Whale said the town often reeked from septic tanks leaking or failing.

She had been advised when she moved to the town 10 years ago that sewerage would be installed in 2009 - South East Water’s works began in October last year, servicing 700 properties in Selby and Belgrave.

Yarra Valley Water confirmed on Thursday 27 February that their works in the area, however, are scheduled for 2029/2030.

A spokesperson for Yarra Valley Water said that Yarra Ranges Council had failed to identify it for the program.

Mr Battin said he expected an answer from the minister in around six weeks, and would pass the communication on to members of the public, but urged residents not to point the finger.

“I’m not going to lay the blame,” he said.

“There is a communication hiccup - whether it was Yarra Valley Water going to the council or vice versa, but I don’t think anyone’s arguing about the need - just arguing on the timeline for it.”

Yarra Ranges Council was contacted for comment on the issue, but a spokesperson said that Yarra Valley Water was the relevant authority with the Sewerage Backlog Program.

However, Yarra Valley Water said that areas were reprioritised every five years, and that service time for Selby and Belgrave could be readjusted in their next reprioritisation in three to four years.

In a Frequently Asked Questions page relating to the Selby area’s sewerage works, South East Water confirmed that there was “direct evidence of waste from failing household septic tanks polluting groundwater, waterways and the environment.”

Ms Whale said that, if she had known that running sewerage for the area was going to be so far away, she would have reconsidered moving to the area in the first place.

“A whole of 170 homes in Selby have been completely forgotten and left off,” she said.

“It’s just absolutely ridiculous.”

By REBECCA BILLS UPPER Ferntree Gully apprentice chef Jarrod Holt is one of 32 finalists selected for the Fonterra Proud to be a Chef (FPTBAC) 2014 mentorship program.

The finalists selected from across the country have all travelled to Melbourne to attend four days of master classes delivered by world-leading chefs and industry experts - including executive chef at Chateau Yering and FPTBAC 2002 winner Matthew Macartney.

Mr Holt said he was initially motivated to enter the program for the opportunity to cook his style of food for more people and learn from some of the top chefs in the industry. “It’s definitely a privilege and an honour to have been selected,� he said. “Through my participa-

tion in Fonterra’s Proud to be a Chef program I am hoping to gain more experience and skills which will help me throughout my career as well as meeting some great people and cooking some nice food. “My dream is to open a restaurant back in Belgrave - there is a nice little place that I’ve already got my eye on.�

Jamie Oliver may pop up in the hills

By JESSE GRAHAM WORLD-RENOWNED foodie Jamie Oliver could be setting up shop in an iconic Dandenong Ranges location and residents are being urged to encourage him.

A group of locals are pushing for Mr Oliver to set up in Upwey’s Burrinja Cultural Centre as part of a competition announced in February.

The competition, run through Mr Oliver’s Ministry of Food program, asks entrants to find a site or a venue that could host a pop-up kitchen for a year, get support from the community and complete an application.

YOUNG Indigenous people from the La Trobe electorate are being urged to apply for a place in this year’s National Indigenous Youth Parliament (NIYP).

La Trobe MP Jason Wood said the Canberra event in May will be a fantastic opportunity for people to participate in a week-long leadership program and receive expert training in how government works. “I urge any young Indigenous person in La Trobe, who is passionate about issues that affect them and their community, and interested in learning about Parliament and how laws are made, to apply to participate in the youth parliament,� he said. “NIYP offers the chance to gain skills and knowledge and the chance to meet future Indigenous leaders from all around the country who are interested in making a difference for their communities.�

The youth parliament is run by the Australian Electoral Commission in collaboration with the YMCA and Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House.

The centrepiece of NIYP is a two-day simulated parliament in the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House in Canberra on 31 May and 1 June.

This allows participants to debate bills on issues that affect their communities that will then be presented to the government and the opposition for consideration in developing relevant polices. “The youth parliament coincides with a parliamentary sitting week in Canberra and I look forward to meeting this year’s youth parliamentarians and discussing the issues concerning them,�

Mr Wood said. “No specific skills or experience are required to apply for NIYP, apart from a desire to have a say in what’s going on in your community.�

Young Indigenous Australians have until Monday 10 March to apply.

Participants will be selected based on their ideas, their interests in government and their potential leadership skills.

Fittingly, it took three rounds to determine the host for this year’s game - Belgrave.

“Upwey has been a great custodian of the game recently but because we’re fierce rivals, we both wanted the game,” Mr Francis said.

“That created potential problems but I always like healthy rivalries.

“In some regards we’ve been envious of Upwey - they’ve been good role models for us.”

Upwey thrashed Belgrave in its inaugural Anzac clash 10 years ago and it’s something Mr Francis hasn’t quickly forgotten.

He’s desperately hoping his side can turn that result around on 25 April.

Mr Snell added: “Our clubs have probably got the strongest rivalry of any in the league because everyone knows everybody.

“People who support Belgrave live in Upwey, and vice-versa.”

With Belgrave hosting this year’s contest, Upwey will host the next two - given that next year’s game falls on a Saturday and won’t be a stand-alone match on the day.

THE battlelines were drawn at Upwey-Belgrave RSL on Friday afternoon as a traditional game of twoup kick-started the newest chapter of one of the great local sporting rivalries.

This year marks exactly a decade since the first Anzac Day clash between the Upwey Tecoma and Belgrave football clubs.

And in 2014, the old Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League (YVMDFL) foes - the Tigers and Magpies - are at it again.

But not all is fair in love and war.

In recent seasons Upwey has faced off against another hills footy mainstay - Monbulk - on the big day after Belgrave’s relegation back to the YVMDFL’s second division.

But with the Magpies again firmly entrenched in the top tier, and Monbulk opting not to take part in this year’s contest, the door to another Upwey versus Belgrave clash was thrown wide open.

There was only one catch... both the Magpies and Tigers were hell-bent on hosting the blockbusting clash.

Discussions between Tigers president Ian Snell and Magpies counterpart Colin Francis to broker a deal fell flat and, in the league’s eyes, there was only one fitting solution - a game of two-up at the local RSL for both clubs.

But Mr Groenewegen was quick to point out “both these sides respect each other - it’s just a good, oldfashioned game of footy”.

For his part, Mr Eaton said he can’t wait for the big game.

“The game is back to where it belongs and I know everyone will rise to the occasion - it’ll be brilliant,” he said.

Cheryl Anne Crawford has been missing since 20 January, and police are appealing for information.

Woman missing POLICE are calling for public assistance and witnesses to find a Belgrave woman who has been missing for more than a month.

According to police, 34-year-old Cheryl Anne Crawford was last seen at her home in Dalkeith Cresent, Belgrave, on 20 January.

Ms Crawford has extensive tattoos, along with the words “lost soul” written across her fingers on both hands.

Police believe that Ms Crawford, who also uses the surname Smith, is travellng through the Burra area in South Australia, but encouraged anyone who sees her to call triple-zero immediately.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Kim Wells said he is pleased that commuters who use the busy Belgrave station will now feel safer knowing they are protected.

Minster Wells said the Victorian Government has committed to recruiting and deploying 940 officers by November 2014 and the PSOs at Belgrave station is part of that promise.

BELGRAVE rail station now have Protective Services Officers (PSOs) patrolling every night from 6pm until the last train leaves the platform.

The patrols began on Tuesday 25 February and were welcomed by Eastern Victoria Regions MPs Edward O’Donohue and Andrew Ronalds.

Mr O’Donohue said PSOs have the power to detain anyone who threatens public safety, confiscate weapons and issue fines to protect commuters from crime, violence and antisocial behaviour.

“They are also trained in conflict resolution and dealing with vulnerable people,” he

said. “This builds on the number of PSOs already deployed at local stations Upwey, Ferntree Gully and Boronia.”

Mr Ronalds said PSOs had been working on the public transport network since February 2012 with a total of 657 officers deployed across 92 stations.

“The PSOs will keep commuters safe by patrolling the train platform, car parks and surrounds to prevent anti-social behaviour, property damage and alcohol and transport related crime,” he said.

Review risks damaging solar LATER this year the Renewable Energy Target or RET will be reviewed for the second time in three years.

Many people in the renewable industry are concerned that the Federal Government will use the review to either reduce or abolish the RET. The last review caused investment uncertainty even though no major changes were ‘on the table’.

This time, misleading and inaccurate information from government about the cost of the RET suggests they are planning major changes.

This is further undermining investment confidence.

The RET is important for several reasons.

Without a price on carbon the RET will be the main driver of the government’s 5 per cent emissions reduction target.

Without it, this very modest target will probably not be met.

The RET also drives investment in the renewable energy industry which creates employment. In 2013, the solar energy industry alone employed 12,300 Australians.

On hot summer days, in times of peak demand, solar systems add extra power to the grid, help reduce the wholesale price of electricity and reduce the risk of blackouts.

For example, on 16 January, when the temperature was in the low 40s, solar systems in Victoria produced 2.80 per cent of state electricity in use.

It was 9.41 per cent in South Australia, 9.13 per cent in Western Australia, 8.64 per cent in Queensland and 3.59 per cent in New South Wales (Source: Australian Solar Council).

The benefits of the solar industry are also evident locally in the federal electorate of La Trobe. There are 5471 solar homes in La Trobe.

They are estimated to generate 13.86 megawatts of clean energy, save 17,096 tonnes of CO2 and reduce power bills by $3 million (Source: Solar Citizens).

These benefits will continue to grow and be shared by more Austra-

lians if the RET is not reduced.

A leading government figure recently linked the RET to rising power prices.

The fact is that the RET is less than 3 per cent of household electricity prices.

This means reducing the RET will not reduce power prices.

Instead it will just put people out of work, add to pollution and increase the profits of foreign owned power companies.

Decisions on the RET should be based on facts, not on misinformation or fiction.

Trail of endurance

By JESSE GRAHAM ENDURANCE runners took to the Warburton Trail last week as part of a 208 kilometre trek that took them from Mount Baw Baw through the Dandenongs and into Melbourne.

Adventure runner Richard Bowles and multisport racer Jarad Kohler set off on Wednesday 26 February from Mount Baw Baw, setting off on an offroad journey that would take two days to complete.

The trip to their destination - Bourke Street, Melbourne took the fitness fanatics through the Upper Yarra area on the Warburton Trail before they branched off into the Dandenong Ranges.

Mr Bowles said the run was

part of the launch to this year’s Brooks Trail Run Festival in the Mount Baw Baw area, but doubled as an opportunity to encourage people to take up trail running.

“I think, for me, there’s a benefit to the soul, being on trails,” he said.

“It’s very nice in nature - it’s relaxing, and you’re almost in this hypnotised state.

“I think it’s a lot easier on the joints.”

The run was undertaken completely off-road, with the exception of crossings, and Mr Bowles said the Warburton Trail offered a good running experience to anyone interested in fitness.

“It’s great - it’s accessible

to everyone, it’s so close to Melbourne and there are cafes along the route if you’re into that sort of thing,” he said.

“It’s great for road runners and trail runners, and it’s good for me, because I’ve really been able to cover some distance.”

The pair arrived in Bourke Street at 2.22pm on Friday 28 February, with thousands of metres under their respective belts and 55 kilometres in their final day alone.

The Brooks Trail Run Festival runs from 8-10 March in the Mount Baw Baw region and celebrates trail running with a number of different running events.

Dip in total crime

By JESSE GRAHAM WHILE crime rates are rising across the state, the Yarra Ranges saw total crime drop in the past year, despite rising domestic violence rates.

Victoria Police released its latest round of crime statistics on Wednesday 26 February, comparing 2013 crime rates to the year before.

Crime across Victoria rose 3.1 per cent in 2013, though the Yarra Ranges Police Service Area (PSA) saw a drop of 4.5 per cent overall.

Family violence incidents rose by 6 per cent in 2013, with 380 individual offences recorded compared to 358 in 2012.

Yarra Ranges Inspector Paul Rosemblum vowed that Yarra Ranges police would continue to make family violence a priority.

“It is clear that we are progressing in the right direction as there is increased reporting of family violence matters with a noted increase in referrals to support agencies,” he said.

“We will work closely with council and other agencies to make headway in this area.

“A domestic family violence unit has been implemented and is of great assistance, providing expertise, guidance and confidence in targeting this issue.”

The rise in family violence is consistent with the state’s figures, which saw statistics rise 9 per cent - or 1793 offences - from the year before.

Assault in general - which includes family violence - saw an 11.2 per cent rise.

According to Insp Rosemblum, burglary was another key focus for

police, with a dramatic fall of 26.6 per cent in residential burglary and a 24.1 per cent increase in commercial and other burglaries.

Insp Rosemblum said Yarra Ranges police had taken “significant effort” in targeting burglary across the field, though the rise in crime rates remained a concern.

“Commercial burglary continues to be an issue, but I am confident that our crime strategies combined with media strategies will result in a reduction of this offence, also,” he said.

Robbery saw a nearly 40 per cent drop in 2013, with 26 incidents reported to police compared to 43 in 2012, while crime against property rates dropped by nearly 10 per cent and drug offences dropped by 7.5 per cent.

Deaths on the road were also an issue in the area, with eight fatalities in the Yarra Ranges in 2013 - a rise of three compared to 2012.

Insp Rosemblum said road policing would remain a priority throughout 2014.

“We continue with planned visible and covert operations targeting known areas of risk,” he said.

“Media education strategies continue in our efforts to reduce serious injury collisions.”

The state road toll was 42 on Wednesday 26 February - up 38 from the same time in 2013.

The crime rates were compared for the period of 1 January-31 December in 2012 with the same period in 2013.

By KATH GANNWAY YARRA Ranges Council’s Draft Equity, Access and Inclusion Strategy is out for public comment.

The council, at its 11 February meeting, endorsed the draft, which is now on public exhibition.

Cr Maria McCarthy said the draft strategy had been strengthened following feedback from the council and the Disability Advisory Council, the key change being to strengthen council’s advocacy role.

She said the four goals contained in the strategy were to ensure information was accessible and supported equitable participation and inclusion in civic life, that council buildings and infrastructure were accessible to everyone, that Yarra Ranges was an inclusive community where everyone could particpatie equally and that council’s commitment to equity, access and inclusion were demonstrated in all aspects of the business.

Mayor Fiona McAllister said she was on the Disability Advisory Council when the strategy was developed.

“Inclusion is a topic very close to my heart, and I think we as a community have a long way to travel on this. I am behind anything we do as a council to support this,” she said.

“It should be a very short journey, but, sadly, it’s a longer journey than we would have thought.”

Dozens of groups compare notes

By RUSSELL BENNETT REPRESENTATIVES from all of Emerald’s sporting, community and service groups will converge on the town’s RSL next week for a forum that could help shape the future of the town in 2014.

The RSL has initiated the forum for all of the town’s groups and clubs - and Cardinia Shire’s Ranges Ward councillors - to band together and make themselves known, so they can work to better serve their community.

There are currently around 50 groups and clubs within Emerald many of which would not be known to each other.

But RSL president Peter Maloney said his club already had “a very positive response” to the networking concept.

He said the general idea was for the groups in attendance to all share their common goals, and to co-operate where possible.

Emerald RSL’s Paul Rothville will co-ordinate the evening, which kicks off at 7pm on 12 March at the RSL clubrooms.

He said the forum would enable all participants to enhance their service and to better serve the community by the sharing of ideas, and to improve ways of how to represent the

Memorial funds A TOTAL of $500,000 has been secured to fund an Ash Wednesday Memorial in the Cockatoo township.

La Trobe MP Jason Wood said he is committed to building the project and has secured the $500,000 in federal funding towards its construction.

“In partnership with the Cardinia

Shire Council, a significant place will be built for people to better appreciate the enormous impact these fires had on our community,” he said.

“A big thank you should go out to the Ash Wednesday Memorial project committee led by president Graham Simpson, a former Cockatoo CFA captain involved in the

fires, who has helped plan the memorial.”

On 16 February 1983, 47 people from Victoria and 28 people from South Australia lost their lives during the devastating fires that swept through the two states.

Mr Wood said the memories of the fires are still etched into the minds of many in the community

and the anniversary allows the community to remember the bravery of CFA fire-fighters.

“With the unusual hot weather we should all be alert and prepared to the threat of fire and remember the incredible importance the CFA plays in protecting our community,” Mr Wood said.

Friends tap into cash Reserves

Sweet smell of success

By REBECCA BILLS FRIENDS of Water Race and Quinn Reserve have received over $18,000 over two years to preserve Quinn Reserve.

Awarded under Melbourne Water’s River Health Incentives Program in 2013, the group received $12,250 for contractor weeding and spraying, volunteer weeding and volunteer planting of 3500 Indigenous plants to the reserve.

In 2014, an addition $5760 was awarded to add a further 3500 Indigenous plants to Quinn Reserve.

Friends of Water Race and Quinn Reserve president Ben Ellis said the grants had been a big help in maintaining the sustainable future of the reserve.

“The differing amounts in the two grants is due to different weed type and density issues which had to be dealt with before planting could take place,” he said.

“The aim of these grants is to enhance the environment of Quinn Reserve where it adjoins Olinda Creek and to stimulate community involvement.”

“These groups work extremely hard with limited resources to protect and improve local rivers and creeks,” he said.

“They give up their valuable time to improve the health and amenity of these community assets for the benefit of all.”

Mr Norman said the group was a truly positive force in the community and that Melbourne Water monitored all grant programs closely.

“It’s important we acknowledge their contributions and

encourage their ongoing work, which helps improve water quality and habitat for native plant and animal life,” he said.

“As part of our reporting requirements, recipients must provide progress reports and final reports for projects, which detail the activities implemented and the results achieved as well as the actual expenditure, supported by invoices and receipts.”

LILYDALE Aged Care has opened its doors after a $12 million re-development project.

Last Friday, the official opening of Lilydale Aged Care managed by Allity was attended by Member for Evelyn Christine Fyffe MP, Yarra Ranges mayor Fiona McAllister and chief execu-

tive officer of Allity David Armstrong.

Mr Armstrong said the state-of-the-art aged care home was a wonderful and welcoming place that epitomises the word home for their residents.

“It proudly continues the history of care and community that has always been a feature of this site,” he said.

“The lives and stories of our residents at Lilydale are the fabric of this district’s history, community and spirit.

The home was previously the old Dame Nellie Melba Bush Nursing Hospital site which subsequently became the Lilydale Hospital before transitioning into the aged care home.

WARRATINA Lavender Farm reached international heights last week when a $2.5 million deal was signed in a deal to bring teddy bears to overseas children.

A group of Chinese delegates, parliamentarians and international media flocked to Warratina Lavender Farm in Wandin Yallock on Thursday 27 February, where it was announced the farm would be exporting lavender-scented teddy bears to China.

The deal, which is currently signed for a year with OzStars Entertainment, is worth $2.5 million, with the possibility of lavender tea, oil and cosmetics to be sent off in the future. Warratina Lavender Farm owner Anne-Marie Manders said she was very excited about the business opportunity, which would also see limited-edition teddy bears distributed to the country.

She said that, while items often come and go in popular fashion, she hopes the bears deal is renewed at the end of its 12 month period.

“I’m glad we’ve built up a strong respect and trust with these people,” she said.

Ms Manders said the majority of the visitors to the farm were Chinese tourists and that the lavender-scented bears were always a hit with visitors of all nationalities.

President of the Upper House Bruce Atkinson MP spoke at the event and said his presence, along with Melbourne MP Jennifer Kanis - who represented Opposition leader Daniel Andrews - was an indicator of joint-support for the venture.

“There’s bipartisan support for ventures such as this, which are designed to develop trade and investment, cultural and social ties between Victoria and China,” Mr Atkinson said.

Chinese comedian and actor Guo Degang, who is part of the deal, announced at the launch that he planned to continue his support of Melbourne by aiming to create one of his movies in the state every year.

The announcement is expected to be broadcast through more than 100 media outlets in China.

Dysfunctional job THE youth unemployment crisis reveals worrying pockets of disadvantage in regional Victoria and Melbourne’s northern suburbs under Denis

Napthine’s watch.

As entire industries collapse and employment security declines (only two per cent of new jobs have been full-time since the Liberal National Party Coalition was elected in Victoria), the jobs future of our state should be at the forefront of the Napthine Government’s agenda.

Denis Napthine’s actions show the opposite: they cut $1.2 billion from TAFE, reducing the courses on offer and the number of enrolments and their major infrastructure pipeline consists of one dodgy tunnel.

Over the last term of the previous Labor Government, average annual job growth was three times faster than it has been under the Coalition.

Victorian Labor leader Daniel Andrews has already released detailed policies to create 10,000 jobs, transform our roads and public transport and get our economy back on track.

But in his dysfunctional minority government, Denis Napthine has shown he is more interested in fighting for his own job than fighting for Victorian jobs.

Victoria deserves better.

Plan against litter EVERY year Knox City and Yarra Ranges Shire Councils call on Ferntree Gully and Belgrave residents to join Clean Up Australia Day. Last year more than half a million volunteers around the country removed just over 16,000 tonnes of rubbish, which is a formidable achievement.

Ferntree Gully and Belgrave residents should be proud of their contribution.

As an organisation focused on minimising the impact on the environment, the National Packaging Covenant Industry Association is participating.

We have also encouraged our member companies to take part.

But while cleaning up after litterers is a noble and necessary cause, we believe it should be more than just a one-day event.

It should be considered the right thing to do every day.

Instead of just one-off events we need to find more long-term solutions to the littering problem.

We need to fight littering by changing behaviours and prevent litter happening in the first

place by tackling the causes.

The NPCIA’s National Litter Action Plan has been developed to do this.

By providing the right infrastructure so residents can deposit their litter, by making it unacceptable in society to litter and by taking action against those that still chose to litter, we can have a lasting impact.

In contrast, cleaning up after litterers in problem solving terms is an “end of pipe” solution.

And other solutions put forward, such as the Container Deposit Levy (CDL), will make people feel it’s alright to litter because someone else will be motivated to pick it up and collect the deposit.

Clean Up Australia Day should be applauded for the impact it has had and we are pleased to be part of it again this year.

But as a country we need to look at the litter plans and the commitments already in effect which will prevent litter happening in the first place.

By JESSE GRAHAM BELGRAVE South and Heights fire fighters are calling for public assistance to help them become the first in the state to get a new ultra-light vehicle.

Belgave Heights and South CFA Captain Sean Grondman told the Mail that the brigade had spent the past few months running a fundraising appeal with an ultimate goal of raising $15,000.

The fundraising money will go towards a new, ultra-light specialised vehicle which will bolster the brigade’s fleet and be the first of its kind in any CFA fleet.

Capt Grondman said the

community response to the appeal - the first in almost five years - had been poor, and that about $4000 had been raised compared to more than $10,000 in the last appeal.

He said the vehicle has been specially designed by the brigade and will be able to carry extra crew members and 700 litres of water.

“We’re the guinea pigs,” Capt Grondman said.

“It’s larger than current slipon vehicles but smaller than a tanker.

“It will easily access bushier and hard to access places and give us a quicker response.”

The brigade is aiming to have the funds - a total of $140,000 -

raised by the end of March so that the vehicle would arrive in April, and urged the community to help with the project.

“I’d encourage people to donate what they can,” Capt Grondman said.

He said the brigade was organising a fundraising event with one of the members who works as a personal trainer.

People can donate pledges and put the trainer through her paces with exercises and routines.

High ATAR achievements MATER Christi College has celebrated the high achievements of the Year 12 Class of 2013, with a special presentation assembly.

Ferntree Gully student Erin McKernan and Sarah Alley from Belgrave were two of the 17 students who achieved ATAR scores over 90. Erin was college dux with an ATAR score of 97.95.

She has accepted an offer to Monash University to study biomedical science, while Sarah who achieved an ATAR score of 97.75, has been accepted into commerce/law at Monash University.

Principal Mary Fitz-Gerald said nearly onethird of students achieved an ATAR over 80.

Amazing race MOUNT Lilydale Mercy College Intermediate VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) students were recently involved in the annual VCAL Amazing Race Day which is held within the Melbourne CBD. The event is part of a unit on leadership, in which students explore the characteristics of people in leadership roles.

They distinguish between different leadership styles, and identify methods for motivating others.

To reflect on their own leadership styles, they are encouraged to identify interpersonal skills that are used by people in leadership roles and identify responsibilities of a leader.

The Amazing Race gives students the opportunity to put into practice what they have learned about leadership and working in teams.

Students worked in groups of four to five following clues which led them between checkpoints in the CBD. At various checkpoints students had to answer questions and complete physical challenges in order to progress. This year the results were outstanding.

Most groups achieved above average times, which demonstrates their effectiveness as leaders and team members.

During 2013 Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected Pope and became Pope Francis and since that time he has gone about changing and growing the Catholic Church from within. Like most who lead he does this not by only word, but by the example that he gives us and clearly his is a different style of leadership. Firstly he chose to live in community rather than the isolation of the beautiful papal chambers and he prefers simple clothes rather than the rich robes of his predecessors. He has been seen driving around Rome in a simple car rather than a limousine and he rejects much of the trappings of his office. Pope Francis is interested in relationships and his model for change involves prayer, discernment and consultation by listening in earnest to those involved, but especially to the poor.

Pope Francis has gone about remodelling for us the style of leadership that we in Catholic Education have known for some time. We call it “servant leadership� and it is obviously based on the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Servant leadership asks a great deal from us because it calls us to be all that we can be. It compels us to develop our talents and gifts. It helps us to understand that each of us has been blessed and thus we in turn must grow those gifts and share them with others. Each of us is and must be God’s gift to the world. Service demands that we give of ourselves and of our best to others and here once again Pope Francis has given us the theme for Catholic Education week in 2014.

The theme of “Entrust Yourselves to God and Dare to Dream� originated in a tweet by Pope Francis to young people in April 2013 and Joe Doolan from the Catholic Education Office in Melbourne tells us that “Pope Francis encourages all young people to embrace the grand plan that God has for each person, a vision that includes personal integrity, strong relationships with others, service of the Kingdom and a shared vigilance for our world�.

Thus each one of us is being called to be a better person and to better ourselves. God wants us to dare to dream and then to bring that dream to reality. Pope Francis has modelled the way to give birth to those dreams. Seek advice and trust in those who support you; don’t be deterred by criticism; plan and seek clarity (from God by prayer) and then have the courage to ‌ Ours is a message of hope. God bless

Charity ball helps Catie PUT on your best mask and get your gown (or suit) - a masquerade ball is coming, with money going towards a Healesville teenager’s awareness campaign.

The Masquerade for Catie event will be held on Saturday 15 March at the York on Lilydale in Mount Evelyn, running from 8-10pm.

The event invites members of the community to put on their best disguise and go allout with their costumes for the ball, which will raise money for Healesville teenager Catie Barlow.

Catie has campaigned to raise awareness of porphyria while undergoing treatment for the terminal illness, and said that profits will go towards a trip across the Nullarbor for her - one of the

items on her bucket list.

She said the money will also go towards future events raising awareness of the disease, and raising money for her treatment.

“I want to go across the Nullarbor - though my number one is to raise awareness of porphyria,” the 17-year-old said.

“I want to do little things that you don’t really get to do every day, before I’m too sick to be able to do anything.”

This year marks the second Masquerade for Catie event, and Catie said that around 150 people attended the last ball - a number she would like to see topped.

“Everyone goes all out, and it ended up being huge and spectacular,” she said.

Catie said the idea for the masquerade ball came from her not getting to have her debu-

tante ball in school, due to her illness, and the masks represent the mysteries that surround the disease.

Porphyria is a hereditary disease, and is a group of different disorders caused by abnormalities in chemical processes in the body - it can flare up at any time from a number of causes.

People with porphyria can’t stay exposed to the sun, and can experience problems with their nervous system, resulting in pains, paralysis, vomiting and a myriad of other symptoms.

Entry to the Masquerade for Catie event will cost $40 per person for adults, $20 for 13 to 17-year-olds and children aged under 12 will enter for free.

Latin appeal heats up

By REBECCA BILLS PATRONS at the Sooki Lounge will be taken a realm of world music when Shaka Baka takes to the stage.

Kicking off the night with Mexican Music Man, virtuoso Alejandro Espino Aldana accompanied by drummer Gustavo Moreno from Columbia, the duo will play vibrant Latin music.

Shaka Baka’s lead songstress Visnja said Alejandro sings in Mexican and she will join them after as a band to perform a broader variety of world sounds.

“As a band we have been performing since May last year,” she said.

“He played one of my original songs to me and he livened up the beat and I was really impressed,” she said.

Visja said the music the group plays has universal appeal that combines Gypsy, reggae and indie house flavours.

“It’s exotic yet still accessible,” she said. “We aren’t a snobby band and we love talking to people that love our music.

“We want music to bring out the best in people and for people to remember music is something special - especially live.”

Busking event inspires next big step BELGRAVE came to life at the Belgrave Buskers Festival late last month as local talent was showcased.

The town was bursting with more than 70 buskers that lined the streets competing and not competing in various categories and age groups.

Event organiser Marina Dennis said the day ran really smoothly with some of the best talent of the area showcased.

“The day went really well, there was a great vibe on the street and it was well supported by

the local venues and local people from around the Hills,” she said.

“3MDR FM who ran a live broadcast on the day kept commenting on how high the standard of talent was. This event helps the performers gain confidence as some of them are new performers and the feedback they get from the judges is pretty significant.”

Solo open age winner and last year’s Darren Jones Encouragement Award recipient Justine Walsh said she finds the festival inspiring.

“Last year winning the encouragement award was really magical,” she said. “That’s the only year they are going to give away that award so it is such a huge honour to have received it.

“And winning this year as well - it’s just phenomenal. I’m now working on getting a band together. I’m about to do a trip to Sydney and when I get back I’ll be hitting the studio.”

LOCAL resident Charlotte Ross is partnering with the community to raise much-needed funds for a special little man.

Six-year-old Joshua Schwarz was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour in November 2012 and also has a genetic disorder which renders both chemotherapy and radiation therapy ineffective for him.

Ms Ross said after meeting the family through the initial community fund-raiser in January this year she was prompted to help the family.

“We learnt a little bit more about their story and lack of support and I really wanted to help,” she said.

“In the past I’ve done some events for some lobbyist groups for third world countries and I thought this would be something nice to do for the family especially with my experience in fund-raising.”

Joshua is one of only 134 people worldwide to have ever been diagnosed with the genetic disorder.

Ms Ross said his only hope is a treatment being used in Germany through the International Neuroscience Institute in Hanover the cost $100,000.

“We hoping to raise upwards $10,000 to be given to Joshua’s parents Penne and Wolfgang to be used as required,” she said.

“We spoke with Penne about the event and she has been across all decisions made with regard to the event, and she and Wolfgang will be in attendance on the night.

“It’s going to be a really exciting event and hopefully we can raise a fair bit of money.”

Ms Ross said some of the big donations that will be up for auction on the night will be a $500 Jetstar voucher, Tandem Sky Dive, Box Cart worth $300, dinner vouchers, toys, gift packs and more.

“This event is for such an important little man so if everyone could get behind it and support the family that would be great,” she said.

Joshua’s Journey Dinner and Auction is on Saturday 22 March at Mulgrave Country Club, Corner of Wellington and Jells Roads, Mulgrave.

Ferntree Gully grabbed the opportunity for finals with both hands by defeating third-placed Upwey Tecoma who were bundled out for 143.

THE MONBULK Seniors finished the year off in style in their last matches for the season.

The 1s had a great win over Knox Gardens with Aaron Powell the star with 76 not out and 4/26.

The 2s went down by four runs and the 3s and 4s both had solid wins In other exciting news, Under 13 Hawks/ Knights won their semi-final against Rowville to advance to the Grand Final this Thursday and Friday night (6 and 7 March) to be played at Eildon Park (5.15pm start).

The team made 6/211 with Michael Hill, 30, retired and Thomas Badgery, 28, performing very well with the bat.

The Under 15s also play their semi-final at Monbulk on 8 and 9 March against Upper Ferntree Gully.

Trials and tribulations

By KATH GANNAWAY RIDERS from the Dandenong Ranges competed in Seville Pony Club’s annual horse trials on Sunday 23 February.

The riders, from six years old through to mature adults, competed in dressage, show jumping and cross country at the international level Wandin Park Equestrian Centre.

The more than 270 riders came from across the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges and from as far away as Wonthaggi and the Mornington Peninsula to compete in the competition which is a qualifier for the state

horse trials in May. Riders wore black arm bands as a stand against domestic violence as part of a state-wide mark of respect in sporting circles following the killing of young cricketer Luke Batty during his club’s practice session.

“The Victorian community as a whole is devastated by the tragic events at Tyabb Cricket Club which resulted in the loss of 11-year-old Luke Batty,” Seville Pony Club president Di Harvey said in her welcome to eventers.

“The black arm bands will not only signify support for

those directly affected by the dreadful incident in Tyabb but will also show our recognition and support of efforts to address domestic violence and related mental health problems in the community.”

Organisers said the day was a great success and thanked the many volunteers who helped out, their sponsors and John and Angela Anker of Wandin Park for their roles in making the day run smoothly.

“Without support from these people and businesses, this type of event could not happen,” committee member Lisa Tyrrell said.
