Slime slammed

By MELISSA MEEHAN A FAULTY vacuum system is to blame for green water and slime at the Emerald Lake Park swimming pool last week.

But the Cardinia Council has called for calm, saying the pool was safe to swim in, despite the water appearing greener than usual.

On Wednesday, Anne and Kevin Teasdale took their grandchildren for a swim. “They were excited to be told by the lifeguard that the pool was

opening and raced in,� Mr Teasdale told the Mail. “I then noticed that the bottom was two-toned and was dismayed to find it was sediment that became suspended in the water as they swam.

It was a matter of real concern, and we took the children from the pool as soon as we saw the sediment rising - others remained, obviously trusting that it was safe.�

The family was quick to act; given their grandson Henry has battled a serious heart condition

for most of his life. “The pool was an absolute disgrace,� Mr Teasdale said. “Exactly how the photo shows a disgrace.�

Henry’s mother said she was horrified when he came home and told her about the visit to the pool. “I think that most parents would be concerned about the state of the Emerald Lake pool,� she said. “We trusted that the council’s pool would be as well maintained as any backyard pool. All children

are precious and can only rely on us for a safe environment.�

Cardinia Council’s team leader for Recreation and Facilities, Heather Callahan said that YMCA staff at the Emerald Lake Park had been working extra hours to ensure the pool was clean after issues with chlorination and the vacuum system last week. “A chemical imbalance caused the pool water to turn a light shade of green,� Ms Callahan said. “Staff closed the pool as soon as the issue was detected and ran tests to ensure the water quality

was suitable for swimming. “The pool reopened a short time later after being declared safe to swim in.�

Ms Callahan said a problem with the pool’s vacuum also contributed to the issue. “Although parts were difficult to find, it is now repaired and staff are working to return the pool to its normal colour.�

Mr Teasdale said he visited the pool on Friday afternoon and the water had not changed since Wednesday.

Drivers safe after smash

By REBECCA BILLS TWO drivers are lucky to be alive after a T-bone smash at the intersection of Beenak Road and Queens Road in Wandin North.

About 3pm on Friday 31 January a white van collided with a Van Berkel Plant Transport truck.

Managing director at Van Berkel Plant Transport Rodney Wintle said it was lucky no one was injured.

“If the van had been hit on the driver’s side I think it would have been a different situation,” he said.

“I live pretty close to where it happened and it’s a pretty bad corner.

Mr Wintle said the front cabin of his truck is caved in and he

is currently waiting for an assessors’ report to see the vehicle is a write-off.

“It was a fair old hit - they were both travelling around 60 kilometres an hour,” he said.

“The driver of my truck did see him and put his brakes on nearly 100 metres before the intersection - you can see the brake marks on the road but unfortunately was unable to stop in time.”

Local builder Nathan Schroder was working on a house a few doors up on Beenak Road when the accident took place.

“It was a really loud bang but it seems no one was hurt which was really lucky,” he said.

The Mail contacted police for a response but had not received comment by the time the paper went to print.

THE State Government has launched its tourism strategy for 2013-2016.

The Government’s Strategy recognises and supports the region to attract higher numbers of visitors from the Metropolitan.

The strategy was launched at Victorian icon Puffing Billy in Belgrave on 4 December.

Yarra Ranges Tourism Interim CEO Julie Sampson said Yarra Ranges Tourism exists to partner with local business, government and allied associations to market the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges.

“A key target of our organisation over the coming period will be to target and grow the visiting friends and relative market segment,” Ms Sampson said.

“We understand the significance of what improved visitor numbers and spending can do

for the sustainability of these communities,” she said.

Minister of Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher said the strategy sets out the Victorian coalition government’s vision for Victoria to be a leading tourism and events destination in the Asia Pacific region.

“The Coalition Government is committed to ensuring that regional Victoria continues to share the benefits of growth across Victoria,” Ms Asher said.

“Tourism is a major contributor to Victoria’s regional economies, is worth $10.9 billion to regional Victoria and employs almost 110,000 people,” she said.

KidSafe and Cardinia Council are urging families to check their pool and spa safety for summer to prevent children under five from the most common death, drowning.

The council’s Development Services Manager Brett Jackson said pools and spas deeper than 30 centimetres must have a fence around them.

“All new pools and spas must be enclosed with four-sided pool fencing, and all require a building per-

mit,” Mr Jackson said.

“Always make sure children are actively supervised by an adult while swimming, and never take your eyes off them no - not even for a split second,” Mr Jackson said. “It only takes one terrible moment for a tragedy to happen,” Cardinia Shire Mayor Graeme Moore said.

Cardinia Council is cautioning residents to have a safe summer.

Making us cyber secure THE Victorian Coalition Government is taking action to develop a cyber security strategy for 2014.

The strategy is aimed at addressing cyber security for government issues occurring now and in the future. Minister for Technology Gordon Rich-Phillips said the strategy will complement

the approach to regulating information privacy and protective security.

“The Cyber Security Strategy will set out clear lines of accountability and governance structures for cyber security within the Victorian Government,” Mr Rich-Phillips said.

Racing car thief charged KNOX Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following the theft of a rare race car last month.

The rare racing car, a 1970 Rennmax worth $320,000, was allegedly stolen from a factory in Rowville between 11am on 21 December and 10am on 22 December. The car was located on 8 January and reunited with it’s owner.

Detectives executed search warrants at two residential addresses in Boronia and Belgrave South around 7am on Tuesday.

A number of items were seized as evidence from the Boronia address.

A 33-year-old man was arrested and interviewed in relation to the incident.

He was charged with theft of motor vehicle and trailer, and handling stolen goods.

The Boronia man was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 12 May 2014.

OLINDA campaigners have welcomed a “common-sense” approach to saving their closed-down pool, after council committed to speed along the process in last week’s meeting.

At the 28 January meeting, debate and discussion about the fate of the Olinda Pool dominated the evening, with councillors divided about what solution would fit best, and the public gallery littered with people sporting beach towels as a sign of support for the cause.

The matter came to a head late in the meeting, when Cr Noel Cliff put forward an urgent motion to assess alternate measures for the pool, while waiting for an engineer’s report. The report, originally planned for release before Christmas, then at the end of January, is now expected to be brought to councillors at the end of February.

Cr Cliff’s motion, which included council officers looking at options such as installing a liner in the pool, was carried by an extremely narrow margin, with five councillors

in favour and four against.

Cr Cliff said that options such as the liner, lasting up to 30 years, could cost around $80,000 for the pool, while council estimates for fixing the pool had been placed at nearly $2 million.

However, the idea of a liner drew fierce criticism from other councillors and resulted in lengthy debate before the matter was voted on.

Save the Olinda Pool group spokesman John Faull, who made a submission to council at the meeting, said he was most impressed with the result and hoped that a resolution to the pool’s closure would be in sight.

“Common-sense and reality has prevailed ... but we’re not over the hurdle yet,” Mr Faull said.

“Council is still in a position to hold the project up, waiting for further reports that have not been made available yet.

“We just hope that the council can expedite it, so we can get the pool open before the end of summer.”

U3A Yarra Ranges president Geoff Hughes has announced the group was “homeless” after unforeseen circumstances forced the group out of their current bases.

Mr Hughes said after the closure of Swinburne, their base site was then divided between the pavilion at the Uniting Church in Lilydale and the Janet Campbell Centre in Kilsyth.

“Due to circumstances beyond our control, both these sites are no longer available - we are now homeless,” he said.

“We have just been given some breathing space in a disused Maternal Health centre in Kilsyth for 12 months which will allow us to store equipment and records securely.

“But this is temporary, and we need a base which will provide office space, secure storage space and classroom space to allow us our needed flexibility in programming.”

Mr Hughes said U3A Yarra Ranges was now committed to the concept of retaining the Swinburne site as an educational precinct and base for the group.

“As the community group which has been holding classes at this site from the opening until the closing of the campus, we are extremely anxious to regain our classrooms and to set up a permanent home base on

By MELISSA MEEHAN FOR Sebastian Sutterby, the best part of working at the Australian Open isn’t rubbing shoulders with his tennis heroes - it’s being on the court and taking in the atmosphere.

The 13-year-old Upwey South tennis player has just completed his first Open as a ball boy and says he’s excited to get involved again next year.

“It’s one thing being a spectator courtside but it is a completely different thing being a ballkid on court,” Sebastian said.

“Last year was my second time trying out to become a ballkid at the 2014 Australian Open.

“I was lucky enough to get through the trials and for me, it was an experience of a lifetime.”

Sebastian said he made heaps of friends and even got to walk down the same corridors as the best tennis players in the world.

“I was fortunate enough to be on court with Milos Raonic who is the world number 11,” he said.

Faced with extreme heat, Sebastian said while it was uncomfortable some days, it was well worth the trouble.

“These are just some of the things that you do being a ballkid, I suggest anyone interested in tennis to have a go.”

By MELISSA MEEHAN A TWO kilometre feline exclusion zone has been suggested by residents trying to protect lyrebirds in the national park in Sherbrooke.

Concerned resident Roger Willsher from The Patch contacted the Mail this week, after reading about a number of attacks on the birds since the beginning of the year.

“I’ve been trying to convince the shire and council that an exclusion zone for new cats is the best way to

deal with the problem,” Mr Willsher said.

“We can’t tell the residents that their cats aren’t allowed that are already living there, but they should be registered, neutered and kept in an enclosed area.

“The idea is that the residents can bring no new cats to the area.”

Mr Willsher said that the idea had been tried and successful in Denham, Western Australia, and that there was no reason the same rules couldn’t apply here.

“They had issues with cats attacking the bilbys,” he said.

“But it is the same idea.”

Mr Willsher said the new rules would mean residents could keep their cats but not be allowed to replace them when they eventually passed away.

“But these cats would need to be desexed and contained on their properties,” he said.

“Most cat owners are responsible but it’s the few who aren’t that make these rules a necessity.”

He said lyrebirds had relatively long breeding cycles and only lay one egg every 15-18 months.

“Against these cats, the lyrebird population doesn’t have a chance,” he said.

“I think that it should be stipulated in a Section 32, if a house were to be sold that it was a cat-free area.”

He said while cats were a large problem, people walking their dogs through the park were also causing problems for the ecosystem of the park.

“They leave a scent behind which frightens the wallabies off,” he said.

“Then the wallabies don’t feed on the grass, which mean the lyrebirds aren’t able to get through the grass to scratch for their own feed.”

Yarra Ranges Council is currently consulting with the community about its cat curfew and off-lead local laws.

IT’S been a long time coming.

Work on the new Olinda Reserve Community Facility is about to start - and will provide a community hub to the township as well as facilities for local sporting clubs.

It’s a project that was envisioned many years ago after a quarter of a million dollars was made available to the Hilltop Recreation Association by the Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group.

Three months work of stitching, looping, and knitting.

On Thursday the Tecoma Picket Knitters unveiled their 16 metre scarf which will be used as a banner to make their feelings known.

Inspired by the Knitting Nanas of Toolangi who knitted a scarf 150 metres long (to illustrate the court ordered exclusion zone of 150 metres), the Tecoma result was a “banner” of more than 180,000 stitches and more than 16 metres in length.

Put together “on the line” over the last three months, more than 20 Picket Knitters said the scarf was a way to show McDonald’s and the greater community that they are not going away and would continue to oppose the development.

WORK is continuing on Tecoma McDonald’s and the store is expected to open early this year.

And while those opposing the development have been vocal, a number of residents throughout the Dandenongs say they can’t wait for it to open.

Many of them, scared to speak on the record in fear of retribution, say that the job opportunities for the youth far outweigh the negatives of the fast food giant opening in their town.

Tecoma store licensee James Currie said he plans to employ between 80 and 100 staff members from the local area and would support local sporting clubs and community groups.

“We expect the store to open early this year,” Mr Currie said.

“McDonald’s has always been proud to support local sporting clubs and community groups and this will continue when the restaurant opens.”

The steel frame of the store went up before Christmas and crews are working on the site daily.

Ms Kelly said, surprisingly, there was a lack of tears from both students and parents and she attributed that to the orientation programs the school has in place to make students and parents as comfortable as possible with the transition.

“We will commence a series of events to continue to welcome the new parents to the school in the next few weeks,” she said.

Weightman’s timely ton

By STEVE BROWN DAY ONE of round 11 of the Reeves Shield competition saw some fine individual performances.

This was as Belgrave failed to gain the ascendency over Johnson Park when the Sharks slumped to 6/130 half an hour after the tea break.

In-form all-rounder Martin Weightman then went on the attack, punishing the bowling to the tune of 106, and more importantly a team total of 9/307 from 80 overs.

Former Sri Lankan opening bowler Dinusha Fernando took the prize wickets of Stallworthy and Andrew Devenish early in the innings and ended the day’s play with 3/57.

Ferntree Gully gave a steady display with 9/223 against Monbulk despite figures of 7/48 from six time medallist Jason Fraser.

Josh Henry produced the goods again with 85 and ’Fez’ Farrukh lent support with 40, in a must win game for the Gully.

At Argyle Way, the ball won the battles as Upper Gully was dismissed

by Knox Gardens for just 150 in the 71st over.

Kings skipper Adam Slack showed some fighting spirit when he entered the crease at 2/29 and was unbeaten on 53 when the final wicket fell.

However the day belonged to Adam

Wild with 5/52 from 20 overs including eight maidens and emerging swing bowler Zac Flintoff 3/27.

Upper Gully struck a blow as the Falcons were 1/13 at stumps after the dismissal of the competition’s leading run scorer, Jarrod Butcher with the last ball of the day.

At Upwey, Footballers had first use of the pitch and produced 194 against a Tigers attack bolstered by the addition of paceman David Bell.

For the men in black and orange, Bogar, Muscat and Hepburn all got starts however 194 may come up short.

Bell took 3/30 while leading wicket taker Leigh Bianchi grabbed another three wickets.

In the final game Cody Morris set the pace at Eildon Park with 116 against the Knoxfield Knights who will chase 317 next week.

Cool heads and keen eyes THE Club Championship finals for Monbulk Bowling Club were held last month.

The weather was perfectly cool.

The slight breeze was not strong enough to be influential on the bowls’ trajectories. So there were no excuses and nowhere to hide. The finalists had to compete on the green with no quarter asked for or given.

The ladies’ and men’s finals were played at the same time, with one vacant rink between them.

With two matches to watch, the spectators arrived early for the best viewing seats. By the time the matches were underway there was quite a crowd of bowling members and families to watch the showdown.

The ladies match was between the defending champion, Elaine Butler, and Doreen Edwards, who has won the event more than once, but not in recent years. Both ladies have enough finals experience to make any predictions of the outcome perilous. However, on the day it was Doreen who made a quick start with points on the board and it was several ends before Elaine could make a scoring end.

Each time Elaine got close to the jack Doreen came in with a confident bowl and took the shot bowl.

The crowd kept waiting for Elaine to put on her usual strong game, but Doreen didn’t let that happen. She was a model of concentration until the last end and the last bowl gave her the winning target of 25 points.

After a few years of playing below her best, she was now well and truly back to the winners’ circle. Well done Doreen.

The men’s final was between the defending champion, Andrew Bell, and Dion Addison. Both men have been putting in solid training for this showdown. Andrew came into the game with multiple finals experiences. But, as the two men have previously only competed against each other in a social context, it was impossible to predict the outcome.

Andrew began the game just as he did last year, with perfect draw bowling. Every bowl was carefully planned, leaving very little room to maneuver for Dion. With a slow start exacerbated by nerves, Dion struggled to get points on the board.

The nerves showed particularly on one crucial end, where Dion was holding three shots and then put his last bowl down and promoted Andrew’s bowl, going from three up to one down in a single shot.

The crowd was willing Dion on and he was able to overcome that drastic end and put a few more points on the board to make double figures. However, it was Andrew who continued to draw bowls into the head more consistently. When Andrew reached the winning target of 25, the crowd was left in no doubt as to who handled the finals pressure on the day.

The finals day is a major event on the Monbulk Bowling Club calendar. It is where bowlers of all levels can watch and learn from the best in the club and maybe dream that next year it will be them competing for the title.

By DENNIS FULLER THE February VGL Monthly Medal was on the menu at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday on an OK day firmly wedged between the stinkers to come. And, right on cue, sidled young tyro Broc Reynolds (15) was there to do what he has done on so many occasions over the last year.

The medal day has become his and he won his fourth in the last seven months.

His 77 off the beater for a nett 62 left all others in his wake. He also headed up the A Grade crowd as well.

In B Grade, it was the very consistent and improving Peter Glasscock (20) who was closest to Reynolds on 64.

Dave Jennings managed 68, Graham White, Ken Hill, Leigh Morison and Brian McCoy all came in one under their handicaps with 69.

Steve Town was nearest the pin on the fourth, Conrad Whitlock the 12th, Reynolds on both the seventh and the 13th and Ian Scott walked away with the pro pin dosh on the 18th.

The hole of the day was played by

Ken Hill. On the par four 16th hole, a hole that makes most golfers cringe on the tee, Hill drove to 120 metres from the green and then put his second shot in the bucket for an eagle.

The ladies event saw a runaway victory to that constant star Petra Clowes when she streeted the field by the length of the straight and half way around the bend.

On Wednesday, when the Old and Frail Golfers hobbled in for the weekly dose of OFGolf it was Graeme Fergus(22) who was the star with a stunning round 46 stableford points.

Moss Fuller(22) and Peter Clowes (20) both had 45 while Ben Balfour (22) and Geoff Whittaker (24) both had 44.

To prove that high scoring was on the cards Brian McCoy (29) and Kevin Miller (35) both had 42.

Next Saturday is the first round of the three round Summer Cup. That is three rounds of par in honour of one of the doyens of the club, Maurie Murphy - a man who held up the corner of the club and set the standards for many years.

Swag of medals ATHLETES from Yarra Ranges Athletics braved the heat of Bendigo over the weekend to record excellent performances in the Little Athletics Victoria State MultiEvent Championships.

The competition sees each athlete compete in five events accruing points for each performance in each event. Georgia Laven continued her excellent run of form to take the silver medal in the Under 11 girl’s event.

TOUGH conditions greeted cricketers in the valley on Saturday where the teams taking the crease took full advantage of the wilting bowling attacks.

In the competition’s premier grade, DJ Strachan Shield, a couple of upset results have once again intensified the race for top four positions with three rounds remaining.

Hoddles Creek proved that its potential is greater than what its lowly position on the competition ladder shows as it easily accounted for association leaders Healesville.

Healesville set its hosts a challenging chase of 175 and with a consistent attack one would have thought the Wombats would struggle to chase the total.

Once again Hoddles Creek showed its fighting spirit and, fortunately, it was their experienced batsmen who got things going quickly putting Healesville on the back foot.

Mick Batten was the mainstay of the innings compiling a brilliant knock of 89.

Then with the gritty contributions from Warwick Weir (34) and Luke Hetherington (25), Hoddles Creek made short work of the chase as the Healesville attack lacked the wicket taking ability to put the batsmen under any sort of pressure.

When it was all said and done, the Wombats chased the target down with seven wickets in hand and recorded their second victory of the season.

Incidentally both victories have come against the top two teams.

Healesville now needs to regroup quickly if it is to maintain its grip on a home final as it hosts a resurgent Yarra Junction.

Hoddles Creek will view its next match up against a struggling Warburton-Millgrove as an ideal opportunity to post two victories in succession.

Yarra Junction produced the second upset of the round fighting doggedly to hold off a desperate Mount Evelyn side to continue its spirited challenge to the top four.

Chasing a mediocre 134 set by the home side, Yarra Junction were teetering on the edge starting the day on an unconvincing 3/28.

Quentin Hodgkinson (35) and Cam Spaulding made a bright enough start to the chase.

But just as they looked to be setting the platform to victory they opened the door for the Rovers to challenge as they lost three wickets relatively quickly to be reduced to 6/73.

A game defining 52 run partnership between Chippa Robertson and Blackie Thompson regained ascendency of the contest for the visitors to take their side to the brink of victory.

Two wickets in quick succession with seven runs still to get gave the Rovers another sniff of an unlikely victory, but a six off Thompson’s bat ensured his team a well-earned victory.

With only half a game separating the teams, sitting fourth and fifth, Yarra Junction and Mount Evelyn face crucial Round 12 games in their quests for finals action.

The Eagles recent form will have them champing at the bit to have a crack at Healesville and another top four scalp, while the Rovers must regroup as they take on the unpredictable Woori Yallock.

Despite some indifferent form over recent rounds, Coldstream still loom as the competition front runners as they easily accounted for Woori Yallock.

Chasing the Tigers challenging total of 185, the Crocs made short work of the chase on the back of a brilliant century from Danny Adams. Sensing his team’s fall in form, Adams has been in scintillating form since Christmas.

Remarkably, Adams’ century is the first from any player in DJ Strachan Shield this season, and this was a century of the highest order as he rendered the talented Tigers bowling line-up toothless in the wake of his awesome display.

With contributions from David Brambilla and Liam Doughty, Adams’s 119 saw the Crocs home in quick time and with eight wickets in hand.

The Crocs now face Seville in a key clash for home finals calculations and early bragging rights heading towards the pointy end of the season.

The Tigers face a season defining game against Mount Evelyn where a loss would end their finals chances.

In the final game of the round, Seville flexed its collective muscle as they visited Warburton-Millgrove and made short work of the locals.

Already 1/80 overnight chasing a paltry 102, the Blues ground the Burras into the ground in a brutal display under equally brutal conditions.

After Adam Burns got the visitors off to the best start possible last week, the brutal Tim Dwyer (60) and the hard hitting Matt Hadlum (33) lead an even team performance as Seville finished on 246 when stumps were drawn.

The experienced pairing of Luke Darwall (4/39) and Adam Humphrey (3/59) battled bravely in the stifling conditions in a lost cause.

Warburton-Millgrove now face a do or die clash against Hoddles Creek where a loss would all but end their finals chances.

Seville host Coldstream in what could be classed as the biggest game of the season this close to finals.
