Joshua’s tumour was inoperable, leaving the family with very few options.

The family hit the books and online hard, researching other treatments - even getting in touch interstate and overseas.

The Upwey and greater Hills community have got behind the family ever since, and held a fundraising day on Sunday.

His mum Penne says that the community support has been invaluable.

IT’S a huge battle ahead of him - but six-year-old Joshua Schwarz and his family are ready for it.

And his parents say they will stop at nothing to fight the “naughty little bug” in his head.

Watching him playing with other kids, you wouldn’t guess that he has been given only months to live.

Joshua is fighting an aggressive form of brain cancer, coupled with a rare genetic disorder, making it almost impossible for doctors to treat him.

‘We need pool’ “The community built it back then, and we are fighting to save it now.”

Long time councillor Len Cox said he thought it was a reasonable decision to close the pool following the obvious cracks at the bottom of the pool, but said it had taken too long to get back to the problem.

“We as councillors and the public are still waiting,” Cr Cox said.

“It’s taking too long, I would have preferred a response before the end of December.”

He said that the pool was old, and that he wasn’t sure it had much of a future.

“The community is up in arms, but it doesn’t get a lot of use - it’s the most poorly used pool in the shire,” he said.

“We’ll have to see what the report says, there’s been many conflicting reports of the cost to fix it - we’ll have to wait and see.”

CFA headquarters and local brigades are at loggerheads over the importance of keeping the Olinda Pool open as a firefighting tool.

Last week Olinda CFA captain Steve Donner confirmed that despite the CFA headquarters telling the Yarra Ranges Council the pool had no importance should a bushfire go through Olinda, he believed the pool was the safest source of stagnant water available to his fire-fighting crews.

“It is an important part of our community,” Mr Faull said.

“The pool was built as a water option for fire-fighting crews all those years ago,” Mr Donner said.

“And even now, it’s the safest place for us to get stagnant water if there were a fire, otherwise we’d have to go down into bushland - which is a high fire prone area - it’s not a safe option for us.”

In last week’s extreme heat, Olinda residents came together to show their opposition to the pool closure and explain what it meant to them as a town.

Roots of play

By REBECCA BILLS EAGER little hands from Kallista Kindergarten took part in a tree planting ceremony early this month to thank Parks Victoria.

The children gathered with parents and staff alongside Parks Victoria staff, Yarra Ranges councillor Samantha Dunn and field officer Claire Rock to plant the tree.

The kindergarten partnered with Parks Victoria this year to implement a nature kinder program which enabled children to explore and embrace nature in learning.

The kinder has met every week in 2013 at the George Tindale Memorial Garden in the rain, hail or shine where the four-year-old students explored, played with natural materials, climbed trees and enjoyed lunch together on the grass.

President and parent at Kallista Kindergarten Julie Konda said the children were grateful for Parks Victoria’s enthusiasm and planting the tree is a way of giving something back to the space they have enjoyed all year.

“This garden space allocated to our program has been explored, climbed, rolled on, trampled, poked, picked, plucked and played with by many little hands,” she said.

“We hope they take away great memories of being here and have forged a connection with the joy of being outdoors.

Dandenong Ranges Gardens Manager David Adeson said it is fantastic to see the children interact with the garden at such a young age.

“There have been studies that show the clear benefits that if you have children interacting with the environment it produces a healthy society,” he said.

Mr Adeson said having the program in the gardens has increased its value as a community asset.

“We maintain this place for

the community and it’s a stunning garden,” he said.

“We would happily see programs like this extended with us.”

Kallista Kindergarten also achieve the highest rating during a recent Department of Education and Early Development assessment process after exceeding national quality standards in all areas that they were judged on.

The nature kinder program was the brainchild of director and teacher at Kallista Kindergarten Lu-Ann Randall who said the program’s success this year means it will extend to all three and four-year-old kinder group in 2014.

Students take the lead

By REBECCA BILLS TWO students from Monbulk Secondary College said they are honoured after receiving the prestigious ADF Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork award.

Year 12 student Sam Dekkers and Year 10 student John Riddell are two of 3506 students across Australia to receive the notable award and both said it was unexpected.

Sam said he had always held leadership positions at school as sports captain in both Year 11 and Year 12 and was also vicecaptain of the school this year.

“I talked at assembles and had to be a good role model at the school,” he said.

“Winning this award was pretty exciting and is a great honour.”

The ADF Long Tan Award began in 2006 to encourage leadership and teamwork among school-aged students as an integral part of their personal development and contributions towards enhancing community spirit within the school and broader community.

Students in years 10 and 12 were recognised with awards of $250 and $550 respectively, along with a certificate of merit.

Assistant principal Eric Markham said the award is terrific recognition for both students for what they have given to the school over the years.

“Both have been exemplarily in their behaviour and always willing to help so it is good that they have got some recognition in regards to that,” he said.

“They are always looking at doing positive things for the

Heritage hedge destroyed say the community is “devastated” by the senseless act.

Ms Taylor said they were grateful that someone notified authorities.

“Everyone is shocked as are we,” Ms Taylor said.

“Devastated is an understatement.

“Apart from the privacy, security and charm of the hedge - this is a terrible, sickening deliberate act.”

Chris Britton is an Emerald resident and secretary of the town’s museum.

She said the committee had great interest in local heritage and said it was “frightening.”

The hedge is believed to be one of the last of its kind in Emerald.

“We believe it was built in 1929 or 1930, at the same time the house was built,” Ms Britton said.

“It is one of the few remaining hedges that had been planted.”

Briefly Stand-off ends POLICE cordoned off nearby streets as a man believed to be brandishing a weapon held them at bay for three hours in Mount Evelyn on Tuesday.

Members of the Special Operations Group were brought in to deal with the situation as the man, a 48-year-old from Lilydale, threatened self-harm in gruelling temperatures.

Police set up a staging area near the David Road property where members of the SOG squad were flown in by helicopter, with a result achieved a short time later.

Lilydale CIU Detective Senior Constable Mark Smithwick said the man was taken into custody without incident using tactical options carried out by the SOG. “The man was covered in blood when arrested, he had a cut on his hand from broken glass,” Det Sen Const Smithwick said.

“He was taken into custody and charged with numerous offences and is expected to face a magistrate at a later date.”

Weather-weary senior A SPRINGVALE man dressed for winter last Wednesday was pulled over by police in Kallista after fellow drivers reported him driving danger-

Leading Senior Constable Ken Tromp from Monbulk police said the man, in his mid-eighties, seemed disorientated and lost.

“We were able to get him off the road, and get him rehydrated,” he said.

“It’s a reminder to drivers to be mindful of the weather especially during extreme weather like we’ve had this week.”

Three arrested, one on run LILYDALE police arrested and charged three males and are searching for another after a theft on a train at the Belgrave railway station.

Detective Senior Constable Mark Smithwick said the four suspects were spoken to by police before they tried to resist arrest.

One of the offenders, known to police, managed to evade arrest and police are still investigating.

The other three were interviewed and are helping police with their investigation.

Missing boy found KAYAKERS helped locate a missing 10-yearold boy on the Yarra River in Yarra Junction on Thursday.

Police were called to a caravan park in Doon

Road by the boy’s mother who couldn’t find him for half an hour.

He was found by the kayakers safe and well downstream 600 metres from where he was last seen and returned to his family safe and well.

Family theft arrests A 20-YEAR-OLD man has been remanded in custody in relation to a number of burglaries and thefts from his mother’s property.

It is alleged the Lilydale man had stolen an iPad and other items from the house.

Charges are expected.

Another man has also been remanded after he stole from his dad.

The 33-year-old Healesville man is expected to face court at a later date.

Hotel bomb hoax probe POLICE are investigating a bomb hoax at the Crown Hotel in Lilydale on 9 January.

On Tuesday, detectives arrested and interviewed a 51-year-old Lilydale woman in relation to a bomb hoax.

Investigations are continuing, but she was released on summons.

EXTREME weather left fire crews stretched as they battled a monastery fire in Olinda on Tuesday.

Olinda CFA captain Steve Donner said firefighters were left exhausted, some too ill to continue the fight after very short periods tackling the blaze.

“We had guys who are really fit, coming out after 10 minutes saying they couldn’t physically continue,” he said.

“Their oxygen tanks that normally last for up to 30 minutes were only lasting 10 minutes - it was extraordinary conditions.”

Mr Donner said he and another team were at a reported illegal burn off when called to the Perrins Creek Road blaze.

“We were all in our wildfire gear and had to change into the much thicker heavier structure gear, they are good on a cold night, but not so great on a day of 40 plus temperatures,” he said.

“It was extraordinary conditions,” he said. “Especially for the volunteers that don’t fight structure fires that often - the structure gear we wear is really hot and heavy.”

Mr Donner said that the heat made fighting the fire difficult.

“We had crews going through their breathing apparatus really quickly, they were going through their tanks in 10 minutes and they were coming out exhausted,” he said. “So we were running out of volunteers quickly, so had to call on other resources.”

He said crews were able to get the main wall of fire under control within 40 minutes, but quickly realised the fire had spread to the roof.

“The walls and roof, being an old monastery building, were made of a different kind of fibre, similar to that

They estimate the cost of cleaning up the damage between $5000-$6000 but the owners fear the hedge won’t grow back.

A CHARMING 90-year-old hedge was set alight early on Christmas Day in Emerald.

Glenda and Ken Taylor awoke just before 2am to find the cypress hedge ablaze at the front of their property.

More than 28 metres of a lengthy hedge was burnt in the inferno.

Embers were scattered throughout their backyard including the Taylor’s

pool, and fire crews were initially concerned the fire would make its way to the house.

“It was a pretty intense fire,” Ms Taylor said.

“The hedge is irreplaceable - there is nothing like it.”

Two brothers who live nearby called triple-zero when they saw the hedge on fire.

Robert (Bob) Glassborow Born: 25 July 1913 Died: 13 January 2014 CENTENARIAN BOB Glassborow always said his inquiring mind had kept him healthy.

The 100-year-old loved a laugh and wanted to always learn new things.

The Upwey resident of more than 60 years loved his time in the hills too.

When he met with the Mail just before his 100th birthday in July, he looked back on his many achievements in life with a smile.

Born on 25 July 1913 in Ouyen, Victoria, Mr Glassborow (or Glassy to his mates) grew up on his family’s farm about an hour away from Mildura before moving to the Dandenong district to finish his schooling at Dandenong High School.

“I lived with dad and worked on the farm going around doing odd jobs,” Mr Glassborow said.

“If you are born on a farm you can do anything, there’s nothing you can’t do.”

He then joined his brother working for life insurance company AMP for a few years before joining the air force.

“The air force took me in because the war started,” Mr Glassborow said.

“I spent six years there, I went to the Middle East and spent some time in Australia, too.”

Working as a signals officer, Mr Glassborow, who left his wife Dulcie and two young daughters Barbara and Jenny behind in Australia, was in Borneo when the war ended.

“That was an interesting experience,” he said.

“We went all over the place, we were supposed to be fighting the war but it was very interesting.”

When he returned home he went back to working in insurance, especially when given the opportunity to hit the road in country Victoria.

“I loved that, new towns, new roads, new country people,” he said.

“Being from the country myself they welcomed me with open arms.

I really enjoyed life.”

In 1948, Mr Glassborow and the family moved to Upwey.

“There was lots of available property then,” he said.

“I made a lot of great friends.”

In 1959, he married his second wife Winsome and they continued to live in Upwey.

“I loved living in the Valley, if something happened someone always helped out and looked af-

Kees Tesselaar leaves behind his wife of 45 years Sheila, children Monica, Mez, Lisa, Michael, Joseph, Paul, Ruth and Rebecca, and grandchilden Matthew, Christopher, Timothy, Joshua and Austin. He was father-in law to Ben, Roger, Carolyn, Rachael, Danny and Matt, and a special friend to many.

The funeral service for Kees Tesselaar was held on Saturday at the Tesselaar Tulip Farm in Silvan followed by his burial at Lilydale Memorial Park.

FUNDING boost for electronic recycling has made improvements.

Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe received $10,000 in funding to assist the improvement of computer and TV recycling in the Yarra Ranges.

The Victorian Government is attempting to minimise the use of incorrectly discarding electronics with a drop off in Coldstream.

“Yarra Ranges residents can now drop their old computers and TVs at the Leonard Road, Coldstream, transfer station, free of charge,” Ms Fyffe said.

“With the switchover from analogue to digital TV it is important that residents know where they can dispose of old TVs,” Ms Fyffe said.

The Coldstream drop off point will make recycling electronics easier to dispose of in the future.

More information about the State Government’s program to recycle old computers and TVs can be found at Sustainability Victoria’s website, at www.sustainability.vic.gov.au.

Fears for lyrebirds after cat attacks

By MELISSA MEEHAN THREE lyrebirds have been found dead in the Dandenong Ranges National Park at Sherbrooke in the past few months.

Each had been maimed and hurt so badly they were left to die.

Residents Kathryn Nauta, Bill Uhe, and Janet and David Wilson said they believed that the birds had been attacked by domestic cats which had been allowed to roam free in the park.

“We’re not slamming cat owners, there are cat owners in neighbouring properties who fence their properties,” Ms Nauta said.

“We’re just concerned that the cat curfew doesn’t protect these birds or other wildlife during the day.”

Ms Nauta is a member of the Sherbrooke Lyrebird Study Group and said the lyrebird population in the park had grown from just 60 to more than 200 since the early 1990s.

“There were a lot of attacks back then, so the Sherbrooke Council at the time decided to have a by-law that said anyone who lived near the national park needed to confine their pets 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” she said.

“But it seems like those by-laws have changed, and we’re worried three deaths could turn into more.”

Mr Wilson said that he had personally seen a number of cats wander through his property and said off lead dogs in the park were an-

other problem.

“The dogs bark at the birds and scare them, but the cats are much more predatory,” Mr Wilson said.

“There have been three attacks recently, we even buried one and it had a swollen foot with bite marks on it.

“It’s well known that cat bites get infected easily.”

All four agreed, they had nothing against cat owners, but the reason they chose to live in Sherbrooke was to be close to the national park and all its beauty.

“This is why we live here,” Ms Nauta said.

“I often have lyrebirds walking through my property, drinking from the garden.

“We love the area, the local wildlife - we don’t understand how someone can live here and not care about what their pets are doing to local birds.

“We think that the local laws should be reinstated that cats and dogs in the area are confined to properties at all times.

“We don’t want to see the population disappear again.”

The Yarra Ranges Council is currently consulting with the community about its cat curfew and off lead local laws.

Home recycling pick-up under threat

By REBECCA BILLS KERBSIDE recycling collections may be under threat if a decision is agreed to introduce a container deposit levy (CDL) in the Dandenong Ranges.

The proposal is currently being reviewed by Federal and State environment ministers and would see residents paying an additional 10 cents on every water bottle, drink can, milk, wine and other drink bottles purchased.

CEO of the National Packaging Covenant Industry Association (NPCIA) Stan Moore said he wanted Dandenong Ranges residents to be aware of the likely consequences of the proposed CDL and to protect their kerbside collection scheme.

He said it was estimated that metropolitan councils would lose between $2100 and $8300 per thousand households annually if bottles and cans were diverted to the CDL and public collection points instead of their usual kerbside recycling bins.

“Residents have become used to the convenience and efficiency of putting all their packaging, including bottles, cans and paper out for

recycling,” he said.

“It’s become a way of life for most of us.

“If this happens Dandenong Ranges residents will have to separate, collect their containers, store them and then organise to take them to a collection point.”

Mr Moore said if the CDL is introduced, it could force Cardinia Shire and Yarra Ranges Shire councils to reduce or even stop kerbside collection in the area.

“Some people, especially those living in an apartment or townhouse, will find it difficult to store a large number of cans and bottles,” he said.

“Others, especially those more elderly or less mobile, will find it difficult to transport them to a public collection point.”

Mr Moore said the Dandenong Ranges residents should be proud of their achievements over the past 10 years as recycling rates have rocketed, littler levels plummeted and residents have reduced their impact on the environment.

I’VE just finished Paddy Manning’s book about coal seam gas mining (CSG).

It made me sad to learn that some of our best farming land as well as some our most beautiful natural environment is being turned over to this destructive practice by our mining industry without any of our politicians raising so much as a wimper of opposition.

Indeed both Labor and Liberal parties are all for it going full steam ahead.

In the rush for short-term profits this dangerous activity is being forced upon our hard-working farmers and our rural communities.

Fracking is the use of chemicals forced at great pressure to fracture the rock to get to the gas which is then pumped to the surface.

The mining companies won’t tell us what the chemicals are but despite their poor disclosure we know that they use known carcinogens such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes.

These have been banned in other parts of the world.

If this gets into our aquifiers it could ruin our water supplies.

Then there is the issue of what to do with all the salt that is produced as a by-product of the mining process which requires vast quantities of water to be used.

With China and India dictating to our governments what to do with our resources, I feel it is already too late.

Most of the profits will go to overseas mining companies.

So for the sake of short-term profits and a few jobs we are selling our children’s future.

We are raping Mother Earth. Why have we allowed this to happen on our watch?

A PLEA from a ratepayer/ father/ grandfather/ swimmer! Please keep the Olinda Pool open!

Forty years ago I taught my daughter to swim in the Olinda Pool.

She now has three boys, all of whom began their hugely enjoyable swimming life in the same pool.

We all love the pool and have spent many a happy, sociable time there.

I stress “social” - on any hot summer day, particularly on the weekend, my family and groups of friends will spend the afternoon there, with a “runner” leaving briefly to return with fish and chips for all as dinner.

This story can be repeated many times over by others in the community who use the pool.

Your decision to close the pool to us is devastating.

In one stroke you are removing from us a summer social hub of the community.

Further, an argument that is plain to all, the removal of a valuable water supply in a highly bushfire prone area.

I recognise that in many ways the pool is not “profitable” to the shire.

On less than hot days attendance is poor, yet you still have to maintain staff and any associated cost of the pool.

I feel, however, that one practical way to improve this situation is to heat the pool.

If this were the case, I am sure that not only attendances would improve but it might also be attractive for local schools to conduct their swimming programs there.

This in turn would introduce greater numbers to the pool, hence greater participation, particually on the weekends.

I further appreciate the following, that any improvement to the pool will require finance.

Not only in heating the pool - if my suggestion is considered - but part of the overall package would be in improving amenities.

The change room/toilet facilities, for example are way past their use-by date.

Any improvement will be with considerable costing.

Hopefully, however, improvements and perhaps other innovative ways aimed at increasing attendence will be profitable.

This may not be the case in the immediate/ middle distant future but can I raise the point that there are some ventures that may not return to the council their outlay, or what they expect, but are still crucial and of great benefit to the community?

At this point you are taking this from us.

Please reconsider.

Wish list for improvements IT is the new year and boy do I have a list for Cardinia Shire.

So I begin.

Cockatoo badly needs a public toilet at the top part of McBride Street.

With the health centre only open three days a week and the only other toilet across Pakenham Road, you take your life in your hands trying to cross the road.

The op-shop is not viable because of health and safety reasons.

Next, the state of footpaths, all over the township.

And, of course, my hobby horse. When is anything going to be done about the kinder?

It is supposed to be under the auspices of Heritage Victoria. Nothing is happening.

One has heard that the new government is withholding the money, well shame on them.

If that is true, The Bailey Road Milk Bar bought to be The Hub for over $400,000 is going to rack and ruin and I hear it is up for private sale.

Probably won’t get their money back on that and here we are the mug ratepayers just kept in the dark, not good enough.

So what is it to be?

I will be happy if we get the new loo for a start, Cardinia Shire.

But you know me, I will keep nagging until something is done.

As my husband used to say, you just wear it to the ground.

Someone has to look forward to the battle.

THE headline article about “Mac Attack” (Mail, 14 January) has left most of your readers astonished.

We commend the community spirit of those people and don’t portray them as bad people.

However there are a few issues here.

Firstly, my surveys with residents reveal over 90 per cent agree with McDonald’s being built.

Therefore that figure was obviously manufactured for a selective, statistically insignificant survey.

Secondly no-one actually understands what IS the argument against it.

Is it that fast food is bad?

If so where is the campaign against fish and chips and pizza in Upwey.

Is it a presumption that every multinational is bad?

If so we better stop buying all cars and most foods and items in our society.

Thirdly I work three jobs and was very annoyed to see protesters lounging around during working hours.

Are they all unemployed?

The worst aspect was threats and intimidation to shops who didn’t support them.

Just ask a few along the strip like I did.

Unfortunately Tecoma shopping centre is pretty dead and all would agree an injection of life and business will help the traders.

McDonald’s will employ 60 or so locals, they provide Ronald McDonald House and people will stop at Tecoma and probably support the local businesses.

If the protesters are community-minded, given the building of McDonald’s is a done deal, diverting energy into helping needy local families, for example, is something one would expect.

THANKYOU for publishing my turkey letter (Turkey Has a Bad Taste, Mail, 4 January) submitted on 2 December 2013.

Unfortunately Christmas is long gone so this letter is now irrelevant, but each day of the year we have the power to alleviate the suffering of other animals simply by making humane choices when we shop.

When we buy neatly packaged meat, milk and eggs in the supermarket we tend to forget that these products come from living feeling beings with the same capacity for suffering as ourselves.

MOUNT Evelyn Fast Fuel service station and the Mount Evelyn Fire Brigade are partnering again for the annual CFA carwash fund-raiser.

In a bid to raise much needed funds to replace a CFA vehicle at the brigade, Fast Fuel is opening up its carwash bays for four hours to help.

Fast Fuel co-manager James Nicolaou said it is always a successful event. “The CFA guys wash the customer’s cars for a donation and all the money goes back to them,� he said. “I think this year will be more successful because a lot of people have already gone on holidays and they are home now. “To give an actual number of how many cars will come through, I think it will be anywhere between 200 and 400 vehicles.�

Mr Nicolaou said the event always has a good turnout that raises a helpful amount of money for the brigade.

He said he hopes to have a jumping castle and clown for the children. “Being able to give back to the community means everything to us,� he said. “Dad is an immigrant and he came to this land with nothing and his way of living is if you help others, you will get help back.

FREE Australia Day events are being held in Cockatoo and Pakenham on Sunday 26 January with all Cardinia Shire Residents invited to attend.

Residents in Cockatoo can attend the Australia Day 2014 event at Alma Treloar Reserve, 73-75 Pakenham Road from 8.30am to 10.30am.

There will be a flag raising ceremony and game of local cricket, free sausages, pancakes and fruit platters as well.

Council is also hosting Cardinia Shire’s flagship Australia Day event at the Cardinia Cultural Centre Pakenham where a citizenship ceremony at this event will be followed by the Cardinia Shire Australia Day Awards.

These awards pay tribute to residents, organisations and events that contribute to and strengthen the local community.

Mayor Graeme Moore will give the Mayor’s official Australia Day address at the Pakenham event. “What better day than Australia Day to welcome Cardinia Shire’s new Australia citizens as official members of the Australian Community, and to celebrate the outstanding achievements of people and organisations who give so much to our shire,� he said. “Australia Day is a wonderful time to get together with friends and family to recognise

Mount Evelyn CFA president Ken Reed said the event is an opportunity for the community to get to know the brigade members as well as the work they do. “We are trying to raise money to replace one of our cars and this is one of the fund-raisers we do,� he said. “We get about $2000 on the day but all up we are looking at about $20,000 to pay for the

new car,� he said. “However, the event is really for the community and for them to get to know us.�

Mr Reed said he hopes everybody brings all their cars down for them to wash on the day. “We generally make it $5 per car and $7 for a wagon, but on the day it’s really about what people donate,� he said.

Survival day, culture celebrated

By REBECCA BILLS THE seventh annual Belgrave Survival Day is once again celebrating Australia’s Indigenous culture through the 225 years of white settlement.

The event, held on Australia Day, will welcome multi-award winning and legendary Australian musician Archie Roach.

Mr Roach will be playing a large back catalogue as well as some new songs from his award winning album ‘Into the Bloodstream.’ Event organiser Bonnie Zuidland said it was very exciting to have a musical legend like Mr Roach attend the event. “We are a little bit overwhelmed that he will be with us on the day and at the moment

we are busy organising everything to make sure he is comfortable on the day,� she said.

This year, the festival will include special acknowledgement of the 100th anniversary of World War I Indigenous war service and frontier wars.

Hosted again by ABC Marngrook Footy Show presenter Leila Gurruwiwi, Ms Zuidland said she always did a fantastic job. “There will be plenty of activities to keep the kids busy

with Indigenous storytelling, fun music and dance, tucker workshops alongside art and craft opportunities,� she said. “We are expecting anywhere from 1500 to 2000 people to attend the day as we have had a fantastic response and people always enjoy the day.�

The Yarra Ranges Regional Museum will have a mobile museum set up, bringing to light the story of the “Battle of Yering,� - a conflict between local Wurundjeri people and police in 1840 at Yering station homestead.

PENNE Schwarz can’t believe the kindness of people in her community.

But without them, she says her son Joshua’s battle to survive a rare brain tumour would be much more difficult.

A fund-raising day to help Joshua and his family was held on Saturday at Upwey Community House and hundreds of people attended to show their support.

There were also a number of businesses which donated their time and goods to help the family raise money to pay for his treatment.

Ms Schwarz thanked the main driver of the fund-raiser Bee Cardilini and said her courage to commit and the vision to create an event for such a worthy cause was commendable.

“Not only was she the only person to step forward and say I can help, she was the first person to carry a baton of light upon Joshua’s journey,” Ms Schwarz said.

“It is our hope this baton is passed between many hands and helps to share the light of awareness for Joshua’s cause and bring opportunities for communities to come together and shine in humanity, humility, faith and connection.”

At least 500 people attended the day, many keen to show their support for the brave six-year-old.

“It was phenomenal,” she said.

“I was amazed by family, friends and clients who obviously wanted to help but didn’t know how to.

“This day gave them the chance to do something.”

Joshua heads back to hospital today (Tuesday) to meet with another oncologist.

“He’s been so good through it all,” she said.

“We’re looking at every option we have.”

The fund-raiser exceeded all expectations, and will help Joshua and his family pay for medical expenses.

HIGH standards and quality results are something that just comes naturally for the girls at Joulle Calisthenics Academy.

Winning in two different divisions at the 2013 Calisthenics State Championships at the Besen Centre, Burwood, the girls are now getting ready for 2014.

Staying true to their motto of fun, friendship and fitness, Joulle president Linda Westgarth said she is proud of all that the girls have achieved.

“We have been operating for 11 years and since our inception every year there has been at least one section that has won a Victorian state title and, in some cases, we have had multiple winnings,” she said.

“It means a great deal to have done this well.

“It means that all the hard work that the coaches and students have put in has payed off and it really is a tribute to the environment that we have here.”

The club established in 2002 and is a not-forprofit sporting club dedicated to the development of calisthenics.

“Calisthenics is an artistic team sport and it has many components to it,” Ms Westgarth said.

“Being very team orientated, it gives the girls an opportunity to perform all different types of items that incorporates singing, dancing and gymnastics.

“One of the many benefits of the sport is it aids in co-ordination and it has been proven that it is the only sport that uses the left and right hand side of the brain and physically it is great for strengthening and overall health.”

Funds call for love of the game OVER the past few months, Tecoma’s blind cricketer Daniel Pritchard says he’s lost confidence in moving around town thanks to the degeneration of what is left of his limited sight.

But nothing stops this 19-yearold from doing what he loves most - playing cricket.

Pritchard has recently returned victorious from the 32nd Biannual National Blind Cricket Championships which were played in Adelaide from 29 December to 7 January.

Pritchard, along with 13 other blind and vision impaired athletes from around Victoria made up the squad that competed against South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and the ACT in single round robin 40/40 and T20 competitions.

It was Pritchard’s second National Championships after first competing in Brisbane in 2010/11.

The Brisbane Championships marked eight years of straight wins

for Victoria as well as the inauguration of the T20 series.

“Adelaide was never going to be an easy competition for us,” Pritchard said.

“We lost one of our openers and our strike bowler to Queensland while our other opener retired from the game.”

Queensland defeated Victoria in the final of the 40 over competition by 30 runs after the match was reduced to a 20/20 due to rain.

“It wasn’t a great feeling for us losing to Queensland particularly with the T20 competition still to go.

“Their batting attack was very top heavy and suited the shorter format,” he said.

For the first time in 10 years, Victoria was rated as the underdog going into a final.

Once again, Queensland was the opposition for the T20 showdown.

As expected, Queensland started strong in its chase but lost its top

four early on.

By the 10th over, Queensland was only in the low 80s.

It was eventually bowled out in the 19th over ironically 30 runs short of its target.

The tournament also doubled as a selection camp to determine who would represent Australia in its upcoming tour of Sri Lanka and India later this year.

“I was part of the side that took home the Ashes in 2012 as well as the squad that went to the world cup of the same year so I hope to also make this next series.”

Blind cricketers in Australia are not financially supported and must self-fund in order to represent their country at international events.

This differs from other countries that financially support their blind cricketers.

“This particular tour looks like it will cost approximately $3000.

“If I am unable to find the funds,

I will have to withdraw from the tour altogether.”

Pritchard was born with a degenerative eye condition which has claimed all sight in his left eye as well as a majority of sight in his right eye.

“Over the past few months, I’ve lost a lot of clarity which has affected my confidence in moving around independently particularly around town with the added noise and confusion of blocked footpaths and construction machinery which I had to walk past on a daily basis in order to travel to school.”

Cataract surgery has been scheduled for Daniel later this month to assist in restoring his clarity.

“The difference has really impacted on the way I play cricket.”

Shannon shines Weightman sets keen tussle at Emerald golf

The climatic conditions brought out the very best in Dean Shannon (15) because he tamed the course to card a wonderful 63 nett to win A Grade and also to slip the medal into his pocket with a satisfied smirk. B Grade saw that cunning old codger, Dave Aitken (27), head the field with a nett 64 to be just one off the overall pace.

Andrew Cutting (11) played beautifully for 64, Mike managed Litchfield (11) 66, Graham White (14) 67, Ken Sumsion (28) and Peter Glasscock (21) both scored 68 and Broc Reynolds (15) came next with 69.

Graham White won the pro pin on the eighteenth, Leigh Morison was nearest on the thirteenth, Ken Hill the twelfth, Andrew Cutting

the seventh and Ken Sumsion was the star on the fourth.

A clear winner appeared out of the ruck in the ladies’ medal comp when Karmen Geeves gave the other women a real lesson in consistent golf to win easily.

On Wednesday, when the crew rolled in for the weekly dose of Obviously Foppish Golf (OFG) using OFG handicaps, a stableford event was organised.

Leigh Morison (19) saw the light at the end of the tunnel when he won handsomely with 45 points. There was draw for second when Mick Petrie (35) and Mike Litchfield (12) both boasted 43 points and the look that only second placegetters can muster.

Next Saturday the AGM will be held before play followed by the annual foursomes championship.

This will be followed by the presentations to those who starred in 2013.

IN the FTGDCA battle between second and fourth, Martin Weightman (94) ensured that Johnson Park set Knox Gardens a healthy run chase.

Sharks Skipper Andrew Devenish made 56 as the Falcons bowled them out for 273.

Travis Mulder was the best of the bowlers while Johnson Park has the runs on the board - Knox Gardens do have the two leading run scorers in Norm Reeves Shield. At Wally Tew Oval, Belgrave continued their season of ups and downs, compiling 9/280 in a day’s play against Ferntree Gully.

With Aaron Daniel (73), Dinusha Fernando (52), Leigh Newey (46) and Stephen Batty (39) all among the runs, Belgrave may have found the form they were hoping for at the start of the season.

Up at the log cabin, Knoxfield managed to post a score of 195 against Monbulk with Luke (48) and Jayson (45) Scanlan putting on a father-and-son effort for the Knights.

Nick Bogar (5/46) helped Footballers restrict Eildon Park to 205 despite Ben Morris’s 91.

But the day did not end well for the Griffens, who were 3/17 before the close of play.
