■ Cultural precinct set to overshadow Federation Square
Amazing design THE new Casey Cultural Precinct will rival Federation Square, according to the mayor. City of Casey mayor Geoff Ablett made the bold statement at the design announcement event on Friday, where the winner of the design competition for the $125 million project was announced. “The design is fantastic. It will be just as good, if not better than Federation Square,” Cr Ablett said. He then fumbled over the name of an ‘Australian icon’, introducing Guy Sebastian as Sebastian Guy to announce the architecture firm behind the innovative design. Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp (fjmt), a leading Australian architectural firm that was awarded the World Building of the Year at the 2013 World Architecture Awards, contributed a contemporary and innovative design that won the competition. Mr Sebastian said he had been given a ‘sneak peek’ of the ‘amazing’ design. “The winner has designed something incredible,” he said. “It is going to be great for the area; great for musical and dance talent in the area.” The event was also attended by City of Casey deputy mayor Amanda
Stapledon and local MPs Jason Wood, Brad Battin and Greg Hunt. Richard Francis-Jones fjmt design director described the design as the crowd were shown artists’ impressions of the future building. He described the roof of the building, stretching from the corner of Magid Drive and Princes Highway as like eagle wings reaching over the precinct. “It is an amazing privilege to work on this project,” he said. “I don’t think there is anything like this in Australia or the world.” The design also uses wood featuring in the impressive foyer, theatre and library. Outdoor paths thread through the precinct, drawing people to the community plaza. “The winning design is striking, engaging and functional and will ensure the Casey Cultural Precinct will be an inviting central heart for the community that celebrates participation, belonging and civic pride,” Cr Ablett said. “The design is a fantastic outcome for the community and will be a welcoming place for everyone to come together when it opens in 2017.” For more, see page 3
