Town liberated TECOMA residents are claiming back their town.

Famous mainly for their fight against the controversial McDonald’s development - shop-keepers and resident alike are working together to find another reason as why visitors should come to their town.

It’s based on the premise that they can buy back their town.

Reclaim Tecoma co-ordinators Paul O’Halloran and Darryl Shatte with the help of Fat Space co-ordinator Joy Serwylo are calling on local business owners and investors to raise funds to buy the DVD Destination building at 1535 Burwood Highway, Tecoma.

And while neither would confirm this, the Mail has seen documents calling on investors to fund the purchase.

“We are seeking 20 investors to purchase the building on the corner of Burwood Highway and Sandells Road, currently housing Parents Without Partners shop (PWP), and Fat Space Art Gallery Shop,” the three page document said.

“Purchase of 1535 Burwood Highway, Tecoma, provides an opportunity for local residents to take community ownership and control of Tecoma township reclaiming it from multinational corporate interests.”

Rumours around town suggest that a local family has already offered up to $10,000 towards the project.

Ms Serwylo said that the community already had decided that it didn’t want multinational fast food restaurant McDonald’s to be the hub of the town, and had set its sights on other international investors.

She said investors from New Zealand and China had already built too many shops in the town and said the disjointed and often empty shop fronts was already a concern.

who don’t belong in the community,” she said.

“We have all these excess shops that can’t really be handled by the small community that is here.”

Posters up around town, including the former DVD Destination building, encourage the community to share its vision about what the building should be used for.

Mr O’Halloran remained coy on the plan to purchase the building, instead insisting that the poster was not about purchasing the property at all.

“You’ve only got to look around Tecoma to see where the possibilities are at the moment,” he said.

Other commercial spaces in town include the Tecoma Pizza shop and another space in the same complex - both are estimated to be worth between $250,000 and $320,000.

“What we are really trying to say is it’s not just this property, it’s the whole area we are trying to find uses for,” Mr O’Halloran said.

“At the end of the day you might

get three or four people who all potentially have the funds to support something like that and then it essentially becomes their private operation and you’ve lost the community.

“So the difficult thing we are going through at the moment is this whole idea of keeping the community involved, engaged and owning the vision and the use.

Fat Space volunteer Jenny Rowe said she believed purchasing the DVD Destination building was a fantastic vision for the the community.

“I don’t like to say this but it is like McDonald’s was the catalyst for getting the community activated in asking ‘what do we want in our community?’,” she said.

Ms Rowe said if the building was to be bought by the community it would be used as a space with a gallery and micro businesses.

“It’s a very exciting thought,” she said.

By REBECCA BILLS SEVEN Country Fire Association (CFA) members from around the hills have recently completed a public speaking introduction program.

Vickie Linaker and Dave Evered from The Basin brigade, Elle Saber and Peter Haddow from Macclesfield, Jim Armstrong from Mount Evelyn, Peter Baxter from Lilydale and Laura Wood from the Rowville Brigade all successfully completed the 2013 EMR Speech Craft Program.

The program aims to develop skills in public speaking and confidence through the completion of practical activities including presenting speeches focusing on eye contact, pace, tone, body language, gestures and the use of appropriate language.

Mount Evelyn CFA Captain and successful course participant Jim Armstrong said that in his role as captain he needs to attend different events and give talks and public speaking is a crucial element to the communication element in his role.

“The course was extremely beneficial to me and it really helped me learn more about body language and different styles and inflections that can enhance what you are saying,” he said.

“I think the best part of the experience was we all saw a lot of growth

in all the other participants over the eight weeks.

“We didn’t really know many of the other people in the course so it formed a good little group of people who all had a common goal of trying to improve that aspect of their skill set.”

Mr Armstrong said he believes this is a course that everybody should do and he has been encouraging other CFA members in management positions to complete the program.

“I didn’t tell people I was doing the course and after speaking at both our recent brigade dinner and garage sale dinner I had so many comments on how well I was speaking,” he said.

“It is really positive feedback that shows how important good speech is.”

A statement from CFA Eastern Metropolitan Region said the participants who completed the program gained such confidence in public speaking that it resulted in two of the participants being selected to read out the names of the hundreds of recipients who were recently awarded the National Emergency Medal.

Lessons in nature AN innovative education program that enables students to spend a week in a ‘forest classroom’ at the Dandenong Ranges National Park was launched

by Ferntree Gully MP Nick Wakeling last week.

The State Government invested $90,000 into the Forest Classroom initiative that will give students in grade five and six an intensive nature-based experience to learn more about the environment and make an ongoing connection to national parks.

Mr Wakeling said the program will be offered to 23 local schools and will be run by the schools’ teachers with input from Parks Victoria employees.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to encourage children to connect with nature and learn more about the environment,” Mr Wakeling said.

“Research shows that if young people can enjoy and connect with nature at an early age, they are more likely to

Parks Victoria rangers and education officers will also visit to talk to students about the park, its flora and fauna and how it is managed.

The classroom was first trialled in 2012 and was deemed a great success.

“The feedback from parents and teachers was extremely positive and

the children arrived excited to be learning in a new setting,” Mr Wakeling said.

The $90,000 Forest Classroom program is funded by the Coalition Government through the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development Strategic Partnerships and Parks Victoria’s Melbourne Bushfire Protection programs.

In an impassioned plea Ms Hearl told councillors she had already been involved in a crash as she was coming out of the driveway and that traffic volume and speed had increased over the years.

“It’s an accident waiting to happen,” she said.

“It’s dangerous for us with people coming along at 40 (kmh), let alone the 20-year-old who decides to hoon through it.

“For them to veer to avoid me, they run into a power pole.”

She said she saw the only realistic and quick option as realigning the road, and the councillors agreed.

Cr Cox was supported by Cr Noel Cliff in saying something needed to be done to fix the problem quickly.

“Can’t we just do this section?” Cr Cliff asked.

“My biggest concern is if next year we were reading about where we have someone’s kids killed, regardless of who put it (the road) in in the ’80s,” he said.

“This is serious,” he added.

“It seems to me if the place

is as dangerous as our visitor has said, then something needs to be done now and not wait for another $20,000 to be found before it is done,” Cr Cox said.

He moved a motion that the council go ahead with the work as soon as possible and continue with plans to gauge support for the Special Charge Scheme.

“This needs to be done soon, and not wait for another year until there are some more funds,” he said.

Yarra Ranges Council has confirmed work is scheduled to start in mid-January, and Ms Hearl said she is happy with the outcome and particularly with the support and action taken by Cr Cox. Cr Cox told the Mail on Friday he had since been out to the site and it was obvious something needed to be done.

“It’s a difficult spot and coming out with two kids in the car, she can’t see the traffic coming until she’s out on the road - it just doesn’t seem to me to be such a difficult job to fix it,” he said.

Ms Hearl said she wanted to publicly thank Cr Cox. “Potentially, if this goes ahead in a hurry they could have saved lives,” she said.

Belgrave police Sergeant Craig West said that those responsible cut a hole in the fence before taking up to 50 kilograms of copper piping.

Burglars sent running TWO burglars ran from a Menzies Creek home last week after disturbing the home-owner.

At about 7am on 14 November, police believe two offenders entered the Aura Vale Road home through an unlocked door.

The house was ransacked and two laptops were stolen before the offenders disturbed the victim. The laptops were valued at $1500 and a Foxtel unit was also stolen.

MAKE-UP and perfume were among the items stolen from a Birdwood Avenue home in Cockatoo.

Police believe offenders forced open one of the doors to the house between 8pm on 12 November and 7am the next morning.

The make-up and perfume was valued at $450.

UPWEY’S firefighters took to the stairs of the Eureka Tower on the weekend, raising more than $1200.

Upwey CFA young guns Ashley Nealon, Jack Spooner, Lincoln Bulkeley and Nathan Polderman raced up the stairs in their wildfire kits - all making it to the top in less than 18 minutes.

Those with a little more experience under their belts carried the breathing apparatus on their journey to the top. James Butler, Noel Nealon, Sean Radford, and Shane O’Brien all made it to the top in under 28 minutes.

“Us oldies all carried the breathing apparatus with Sean putting the face mask on,” Noel Nealon said.

“He got to the top floor still with 15 bar of air left.”

MONBULK police have charged a number of youths with selling and possessing drugs over the past month.

Sergeant Mark Knight said a group of teenagers, who are well known to police, had been selling drugs at the bus stop and skate park in town and said while charges had been laid the same youths were still causing trouble in the town.

“We have charged them a number of times,” he said. “They have been charged with a number of offences including possession, trafficking and numerous other street related crimes.”

He said the group included four males and one female aged between 13 and 20.

“We just want to ensure the community keeps us in the loop of what is happening.

“If they see suspicious behaviour they need to keep reporting it,” he said.

“We will keep charging them with these offences.”

YARRA Ranges Council will spend $60,000 moving a Monbulk road after councillors were told it was a death trap.

Monbulk mum Fiona Hearl told Yarra Ranges councillors on Tuesday night, 12 November, that she puts her life, and her children’s, on the line every time she drives out of her driveway on to Jellicoe Avenue.

She said her car has to be on the road before she can see anyone coming, and they can see her car.

The catch is, the road was built on her land.

The council’s engineering department proposed gauging support for a $1.6m landownerfunded Special Charge Scheme in Jellicoe and Vika avenues which would see nothing happen for at least another year.

The other option was to spend the $40,000 allocated for design of the potential scheme to fixing the problem, but said the estimated cost was $60,000, leaving a $20,000 shortfall.

The council officers’ report to councillors said a number of factors came together to create the problem, including the curve and crest in the road as cars approach Ms Hearl’s property at 37 Jellicoe, the narrow roadway, vegetation blocking vision, the steep slope of the driveway, and its encroachment onto the road.

It pointed out that properties between 23 and 37 are affected by encroachment on the road surface.

Director of Environment and Engineering Mark Vermalis said staff had been looking into the matter for some time and while there was the option of a minor realignment it would resolve the issue for just the one property.

Brigade open day IT’S time to discover the Ferntree Gully CFA. In line with the Ferntree Gully Village Discovery Day, the fire brigade will open their station to the public on Saturday 30 November.

Captain Seamus Smith said combining their open day with the Discovery Day meant that people attending the festival and those already in town could pop in to seek advice for their fire plan or to see the inner workings of a fire station.

CFA community engagement coordinator Graham Crichton said that it was important in the lead up to the fire station that the community made themselves aware of local firefighters and the fire brigade.

“We have a wealth of knowledge that the community can learn from,” Mr Crichton said.

“Now is the time to get planning for the fire season - and we’ll be here to give advice and have a chat.”

Stopping the abuse

By KATH GANNAWAY and MELISSA MEEHAN THE release last week of the Betrayal of Trust report has been described as an historic and far-reaching step against the sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church.

The State Government inquiry into the Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and Other Organisations delivered its findings to the Victorian Parliament on Wednesday 13 November, making 15 recommendations.

Principal among them is a recommendation for a new law making failing to report serious child abuse, or concealing it, a criminal offence.

In May this year, the Mail reported that Father Julian Fox, the former principal of Ferntree Gully’s St Joseph’s College, had been charged with historical child sex crimes dating back to 1976.

In what police considered a “break through in co-operation between the Victoria Police and the Catholic Church”, Father Fox was arrested on Monday 22 April after returning from Rome.

The inquiry said more of this cooperation was needed in the future.

St Joseph’s College had previously called for its former principal to return to Australia to face the sex abuse claims after the Salesian priest left Australia for Rome in the late 1990s.

Father Fox was been charged with abusing four Victorian children between 1976 and 1985 in Ferntree Gully and Sunbury.

The inquiry found that the majority of evidence received, about 80 per cent, related to the criminal abuse of children within the Catholic Church and, among other findings, that it trivialised the problem, contributed to abuse not being dis-

closed and ensured that the community remained uninformed and that perpetrators were not held accountable.

The recommendations include making it offence for anyone not to report a serious indictable offence, making grooming a criminal offence, requiring non-government organisations receiving tax-exemptions or funding from the Victorian Government to be incorporated and adequately insured, amending laws to exclude criminal child abuse from the limitations period for prosecution, clarify the Working with Children requirements to ensure organisations are required to report offences.

Victorian Premier Denis Napthine has said the Victorian Government would act immediately to draft legislation on a number of the key recommendations, including creating a new grooming offence and a

new child endangerment offence.

Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne Denis Hart responded to the report saying the church hoped the inquiry and its recommendations would assist the healing of those who have been abused and enhance the care of victims and their families as well as strengthening preventative measures that are in place.

“It is the worst betrayal of trust in my lifetime in the Catholic Church,” he said.

Describing the history of abuse in the church, he said the report sets out inexcusable failures in the church’s response, mainly in the period from 1960 to 1985.

He said the Catholic Church in Victoria supports the inquiry’s key recommendations, but did not touch on the contentious issues of changes which would make the church a legal entity that can be sued, or the sanctity of the confessional.

Bank backs hub project

By REBECCA BILLS A COMMUNITY bank has pledged $250,000 to a new community services hub in the Dandenong Ranges.

After new research supporting the need for the community hub, the Dandenong Ranges Community Banking Group (DRCBG) has offered the funding for the project provided it is fully committed and funded within the next 12 months.

Chairman of the Eastern Dandenong Ranges Project Group (EDRPG) Russell Soderlund said having this funding means organisers have got a way of starting the project and leveraging some funds from other providers such as the shire.

“We don’t know what the project is going to cost overall but we are going to the shire with $250,000 which is a lot better than going and asking with your hand out.

“Councillors in our area have given their in principal support to the project however the next step for us is to meet with the councillors and the shire staff to get the project going.”

Research conducted by Isabelle Woodin Consulting and Training Services in conjunction with the EDRPG reinforced feedback from a community forum held earlier this year that a multi-purpose community services hub is urgently needed in the area.

Mr Soderlund said there are a good range of services available in the region but people just do not know they exist, where to look for them or how they can be accessed.

“The concept is assisted access where trained volunteers help their peers to access the services they require,” he said.

The community hub would create access for all community members regardless of their networks and skills with personal assistance in accessing the internet for various services such as job applications.

John, your Green/Labor alliance stooges really need to get a grip on reality.

Everything I have ever written should be taken as a whole and not as you Greens are so good at, just extracting whatever words you choose so you can throw them around as factual, after adding your own interpretation.

That just proves that you are incapable of seeing the whole of the facts and truth.

Yes, we both ran at the last election and neither of us was successful.

I was the one who ran wholly as an individual against the might of two political parties and came pretty close to beating the political monster I was opposing.

I, at least, was man enough to be honest enough to stand completely on my own - admitting that I had no political affiliation and not accepting any assistance, financial or otherwise.

John, please don’t pretend that you’re man enough to guess that I had an ulterior motive or that you know what it was.

You are once again wrong.

I am not a politician and I have no wish to be one. I had simply seen something that I thought was wrong and was prepared to stand up and be counted.

I am not against good government but I am opposed to any government that is incapable of representing the whole community because of their own twisted political views.

Flaw in design WHEN driving through High Street, Ashburton, the other day, they have parallel parking like Monbulk.

The big difference that there is a 1.5-metre gap between the left hand side of cars driving through and parked cars to allow drivers to back into spaces.

New era for child safety

I READ with interest the Mail’s lead story (Safety Felling, 5 November) and Mr Myles O’Reilly’s comments within.

It would seem, if Mr O’Reilly’s comments are correct, that CFA approval of the Worrell Reserve in Emerald as a Neighbourhood Safer Place (NSP) is imminent and a mere formality.

I have read the CFA’s NSP assessment of the area for Cardinia Shire Council dated 18 June 2013 and it clearly stated that the Worrell Reserve was non-compliant as a NSP. It states that a NSP set in open spaces requires a rating of 2 kw/m² and that a separation distance greater than 310 metres from the fire threat to the NSP boundary is necessary.

The CFA’s assessment of the eastern and southern aspects of Worrell Reserve are estimated at 10.06 kw/m² and 7.29 kw/m² respectively, where no Monterey cypress trees stand and which are five and three times the 2 kw/m² NSP requirement.

I therefore surmise that further extensive clearing of trees and vegetation will need to be undertaken immediately in order to achieve the appropriate rating and the required separation distance for the forthcoming fire season.

Our Emerald community would appreciate a Cardinia Shire public explanation of the planned consultation process for this further vegetation removal and the planned timeframe for this action to occur in order to meet CFA compliance standards and to potentially declare the Worrell Reserve a NSP. LAST week the Victorian Parliament handed down its report into child abuse by religious and other organisations, titled Betrayal of Trust.

This aptly named report is not for the faint-hearted.

Parts of the 748-page report detail the horrific impacts that victims have lived with for decades.

For all of the unimaginable suffering that sexual abuse victims have suffered, the worst scars were on the inside.

All too often, perpetrators used their positions of trust to make their victims feel guilty and shameful for what they were forced to do.

Child abuse at the hands of trusted community leaders was a failing of the system as a whole.

Successive governments failed to act, law enforcement agencies failed to investigate but, most of all, these trusted organisations failed in their duty of care.

The Napthine Government has committed to acting swiftly and implementing measures to protect Victorian children.

Credit must also go the the Labor Opposition, which has unequivocally supported the government’s efforts to this end.

We now move into a new era where child protection is everyone’s responsibility.

I wholeheartedly support the recommendation to make a new offence for a person to not report child sex abuse.

Firies urge all to heed siren’s call

By MELISSA MEEHAN CALLING all budding firefighters - Upwey Fire Brigade is giving those a little too young to join the CFA a chance to become a honorary firefighter.

It’s all part of the station’s CFA Open Day held on Sunday 24 November between 10am and 3pm youngsters can work their way through a number of tests before being presented with a honorary firefighting certificate.

Kids will need to learn and show that they can stop, drop and roll and even learn how to use the fire hose.

Captain Paul Mather said the day was a great opportunity for the community to come into the station and learn about what the guys and girls on the big red trucks get up to.

“It’s a great opportunity to get the community to come in and see what it’s all about - it’s also a chance for residents to get advice about their fire plans,” he said.

“We’ll have all the information that is current and up to date in the lead-up to the fire season.

“Plus it’s a great way for the kids to get involved - we’ll have all the trucks here too.”

Pet rules face review

DOGS could be allowed off-lead in the Hull Road Drainage Reserve in Mooroolbark, and cats and dogs prohibited in Mineshaft Reserve in Macclesfield and Wards Reserve in Monbulk, under a revision of Yarra Ranges Council’s animal laws.

Yarra Ranges residents will be asked for their views on proposed areas where dogs and cats are prohibited, where dogs can be exercised on or off a lead and on cat confinement controls that would require cat owners to keep their cats within their property either at only at night or 24/7 - or not at all.

When the council adopted the plan in September it agreed to review its current dog off-lead areas, rules for dogs on lead and areas where dogs and cats were prohibited.

It will also decide whether to reinstate the cat curfew that was in place in the former Animal Control Local Law. The council voted on Tuesday to invite public submissions online allowing at least 42 days after which it will consider the submission and make a decision.

Some of the issues identified in calling for a review included the need for a definition for ‘leash’ and ‘effective control’ and that locations of off-lead and prohibited areas are not readily available.

In relation to existing off-lead areas, the report by the council’s planning, building and health department said there were not enough off-lead areas, some were too small

and it was not clear where they started and finished.

Confinement of cats is more complex, and potentially controversial.

While councillors heard there were currently no shire controls that require cat owners to confine their cats to their own property - either day or night, apart from in certain locations such as parks and reserves, the report states there had been no obvious changes in the behaviours of cat owners.

The council was presented with ‘pros and cons’ of the overnight and 24-hour control which are also available to inform submissions by the public.

Cr Samantha Dunn urged the council to invite public submissions saying it was an important issue that she was sure would attract a lot of attention.

She said the cat curfew that had been in place had been “enormously successful”.

“What this motion seeks to do is give the community a couple of options in what they would like to see as the most appropriate confinement,” she said.

Mayor, Cr Fiona McAllister said the council wanted to hear not only what people think about the issues but encouraged the public to nominate their favourite places to exercise their dogs.

Mr Swaneveld will be setting up his specially-made stall at the exposition which will run from 29 November to 1 December at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

His stall drew many eyes at last year’s event, featuring wood panelling and an old-style feel that separated the stall for Last Frontier Tattoos from the rest.

Mr Swaneveld said he was looking forward to this year’s exposition and that he filled his booking times for this year before last year’s event had wound up.

Specialising in realistic style tattoos, such as portraits and nature pictures, Mr Swaneveld said he wants to help remove the stigma that has long been associated with tattoo artists.

“There’s a lot of things against us at the moment - things happening in Sydney and Brisbane and Western Australia with bikies,” he said.

“The perception is that we’re all like that, and we’re all tarred with the same brush.

“Hopefully the public that wouldn’t normally come along, may come along (to the event) and see that times have changed.”

Skaters are downhill for the day SKATEBOARDERS from around the Yarra Ranges and the world took on the slopes of Monbulk over the weekend as part of the Victorian Downhill Festival.

In just it’s second year, the Sunday festival was again popular with youngsters and budding skateboarders and skaters alike.

Presented by Australian Skate Race Association with support from Yarra Ranges’ Youth Services, the festival included longboard riders.

Chandler Ward councillor Jason Callanan said the event was a great opportunity for young people in the area to participate safely and legally in this internationally recognised sport.

Shoppers cruise in for classic night

By REBECCA BILLS DESPITE the miserable weather, a game few still turned out for the inaugural Monbulk Late Night Shopping Cruze last week.

Organiser of the event and president of the Monbulk Business Network John Coleman said although the turnout was not ideal, the next event will have plenty of classic cars and bikes on display.

“A few cars showed up and braved the elements but next month we are hoping for better weather and a much bigger turn out,” he said.

“There was a lot of interest in this show and a lot of people had intended on coming but the weather was just a turn off.

“We are going to solider on and make the next one bigger and better.”

The Monbulk Late Night Shopping Cruze is on every second Wednesday of the month and is an initiative by the Monbulk Business Network to promote local shopping in Monbulk. The event is free of charge however any profits made from donation tins located in various shops throughout the street are donated to the Monbulk CFA and other local charities.

Mr Coleman said organisers expect between 50 and 100 cars at the next late night shopping event based on the interest they have had.

“Car enthusiasts love to get together and network and it is the perfect opportunity to bring business in the town and for people to shop locally,” he said.

The next Monbulk Late Night Shopping Cruze will be held on Wednesday 11 December from 6pm to 9pm along the Main Street of Monbulk.

Fair to fan fund-raising

By REBECCA BILLS IN A bid to raise $10,000 towards projects chosen by the students, Yarra Hills Secondary College Mount Evelyn Campus is hosting a family fun day.

The school relies heavily on the generosity of parents and the community to assist in funding costs associated in running the school and this is set to be its biggest fund-raiser in more than five years.

Fun fair organiser and parent Lisa Robertson said by the time children reach secondary school, the level of funds raised greatly diminishes due to fundraising “burnout.”

“This is simply human nature, however an unfortunate fact,” she said.

“Mindful of the perception that fairs are only for ‘little kids’, we are committed to making the day an event for all ages, including our teenagers,” she said.

“We have a mix of attractions and entertainment for all ages, along with the always popular fair favourites.”

Ms Robertson said acting campus principal Robyn Dew has always encouraged the students to provide suggestions and discuss ideas on things that they would like on the school grounds to improve their schooling experience.

By REBECCA BILLS IT’S a nostalgic end to the tour for Melbourne pop artist Lester The Fierce (LTF) finishing her tour with Stonefield at the Ferntree Gully Hotel.

LTF is a combination of Anita Lester and her alter ego created from a children’s book hero who recorded her first set of music in Ferntree Gully.

Lester said she has a very nostalgic connection to the town and used to love going to see shows at the Ferntree Gully Hotel when on recording stints in the area.

The abstract Melbourne pop artist will be supporting Victorian psych-rock sisters Stonefield on their national tour this month and has wasted no time getting back on the road again after supporting the hugely successful Ngaiire ‘Lamentations’ tour.

On the current tour, LTF will be playing all the favourites including Howl which has received great support on community radio and spins on Triple-J. The prolific singer-songwriter is able to incorporate concepts in her songs from love, sex, death and the weather to create her hauntingly unique and unmistakable sound.

Lester said she is thrilled to be

back on the road again and has loved touring with the sisters.

“I’ve not toured with girls before as my crew are usually all men but I’m loving the energy and they are now just like my little sisters,” she said.

“I’ve looked forward to touring with another band that represents the amazing female rock presence in Australian music.

“It’s been an incredible few months of touring and I’m hungry and ready for more.”

Ms Lester has been a silent fixture in the Australian music scene for some years now and in 2012 tried her luck in America.

While there she attracted interest from international labels and in mid 2012 was picked up by an indie label in New York City catching the eye of infamous Kevin Augunas - the man responsible for Cold War and Gotye.

“The industry in the states is really quite intense and far less conservative than here in Australia,” Lester said.

“I’ve learnt so much and I am still working with the New York label.

“We wanted to do a small release here in Australia to test the waters on my own turf so we will see what happens.”

Tempest to help typhoon victims

By REBECCA BILLS LOCAL theatre company Gemco Players Community Theatre is coming together to donate show proceeds to the victims of the recent super Typhoon Haiyan.

Following the tragic events in the Philippines, the Gemco committee has decided to donate $5 from every ticket sold next Friday, 22 November, and 50 per cent of takings from the bar at the Beach Blanket Tempest show to the Australian Red Cross appeal to assist those who are in such desperate need.

Show director Rachel Le Rossignol said although nobody in the show has been directly affected by the tragedy, all have been touched by the stories emerging of survivors.

“We are a very community orientated theatre company and we have previously raised money for Fernlea House and the Leadbeater possums in the past,” she said.

“Over the course of getting the show ready, a lot of people in the show have had a very difficult time.

“However, what we have gone through pales in comparison to what people in the Philippines are currently going through.

“This is something that we can do to help which is an important thing to do.”

Beach Blanket Tempest is an Australian musical which takes Shakespeare’s The Tempest and mixes it with a ’60s beach party movie.

It is full of catchy pop and rock songs reminiscent of the era and has a cast of crazy characters from Elvis to the Supremes.

Ms Le Rossignol said the show has had a wonderful reception from viewers and she is very proud of all involved in the show.

“Everyone has worked incredibly hard and put in so much work behind the scenes,” she said.

“It is an outstanding production and one not to be missed.”

Super Typhoon Haiyan was one of the most powerful typhoons on record and caused mass destruction as is tracked across the Philippines earlier this month.

Winds of more than 300 kilometres an hour teamed with flash flooding and landslides has left millions of people without food, clean water or permanent shelter alongside the thousands of people feared dead in the region.

The money donated from the show will go directly to the Australian Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan appeal in assisting in emergency relief, rehabilitation and recovery assistant to communities affected as well as water, sanitation, shelter and health initiatives support.

“The filmic aspect is a welcomed influence to my music and it carries through the whole EP.

“The EP feels like a spark of lust caused a fire of love - I didn’t know I needed to do it until it was done.”

Finishing up their Victorian tour, Lester The Fierce will be opening for Stonefield at the Ferntree Gully Hotel on 29 November.

HISTORY will come to life at this year’s Draught Horse and Machinery Heritage Weekend at Mont De Lancey.

Running on 23 and 24 November, participants will be able to experience what life was like for people who lived on the land more than 100 years ago.

It is a chance to see the old machinery pulled around the paddocks by draught horses and enjoy a fun filled family day of activities.

Displays and demonstrations will also be run by volunteers of the Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead with food available at the neighbouring Savoia Restaurant.

Mont De Lancey Draught Horse and Machinery Heritage Festival will run from 10am to 4.30pm each day with admission $10 for adults and children free of charge.

Letter from the Premier As we enter another summer, fire safety needs to be a priority for all Victorians and I encourage every household to update their fire plans.

People living on Melbourne’s fringe need to be especially careful.

If you live near a park, the bush or grassland, you also need to understand your fire risk and be ready to act.

Last summer, a large, fastmoving grassfire threatened Epping, Wollert, Kalkalo and Donnybrook, damaging properties and putting residents on high

alert. The fire was unexpected and a reminder that the fire threat on Melbourne’s fringe is real.

This Fire Action Week (beginning Sunday November 17), find out what to do if a fire starts near your home or workplace, and get prepared.

If you live next to grassland you should have already cleared weeds and removed firewood, rubbish and other fuel from around your property.

If a grassfire starts, you need to act quickly and put two or three house blocks between Premier Hon Dr Denis Napthine

you and the fire. Avoid driving in a grassfire because it may be smoky and hard to see, and traffic jams and accidents are likely. Don’t try and get a closer look at a grassfire – you will put yourself and others in danger.

If you don’t live directly next to grassland and a grassfire starts, it is safer to stay where you are because it’s unlikely the fire will spread past fences and houses.

In the event of a fire, it is also important to wear appropriate clothing including long sleeves, long pants and sturdy footwear.

It is important to prepare in advance for fire danger by talking to your household about what your plan is for fire danger days.

Crowds from across the state visited the 60th Lilydale Agricultural and Horticultural Show Society event that focused on

agriculture, family fun and the rural lifestyle.

Keeping true to its roots, the show still keeps the traditional agricultural show ‘where the city meets the country’ theme.

The Melba Park precinct was a flurry of excitement, with free activities and entertainment lapped up by excited families.

Some cuddled a large variety of furry and feathered friends, others visited the animal nursery, and some daredevils even patted a snake at the reptile show.

Hawks circling in winged celebration IT WAS a great weekend for the Monbulk Hawks with the four senior teams all recording a win.

Monbulk’s four junior teams had some close matches with the Under 12s notching up a solid victory.

The new Under 10s team also played its first Big Bash match on Friday night, surrounded by the latest batch of more than 100 Milo in2Cricketers.

Last Sunday, the Monbulk Cricket Club hosted the Monbulk Fun Run. About 300 people participated in the annual event involving an eight kilometres and four kilometres course around Monbulk.

This year the money raised went to the Worowa Aboriginal College for the construction of

a running and fitness track at the school.

The male eight kilometres event was won by 17-year-old Chris Rak in a time of 33.19 minutes and the female eight kilometres by Susie Wilson in 34.58 minutes.

The club’s next function is the Ladies Day/Pink Stumps Day which is to be held on Saturday 30 November.

This promises to be another great day with Frankie J Holden’s TV show Whats Up Downunder there to film the day for a breast cancer special.

Stars for the season

By RICK WALL VICTORIAN netball stars Ashlee Howard and Tamara Luke will play in the local Yarra Valley Mountain District Football Netball League next season.

Luke will be the playing coach at the Olinda-Ferny Creek Club and Howard, who was very close to selection in the elite Trans-Tasman competition last year,

will be her assistant.

Howard has had a glittering career at the top level of netball playing for Australian underage teams as well as the Vixens and the West Coast Fever in the national league.

Despite suffering a serious knee injury in 2010 Howard was still on the Vixensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; list as late as last season.

Luke likewise has experience at the highest level after a strong career with the Melbourne Kestrels and in 2013 won major awards with VNL club Boroondara.

She has a reputation for strong club commitment which is why Olinda-Ferny Creek offered a contract.

Another sign that Olinda-Ferny Creek is a great place for local sport is the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

two previous netball coaches, Toby Beasley and John Portaranios, who will both be looking after teams next season.

Meantime former St Kilda player and Casey assistant Peter Brown will be senior football coach again in 2014 while dual premiership winning junior coach Stef Rosier will look after the Reserves and former Richmond player Adrian McClellan will coach the Under 18s.

Sure shots for Plate mates

By DENNIS FULLER THE Bearola Bearing Plate event took place at Emerald Golf Club and despite the massive downpours during the week the course came up trumps.

The teams lined up for a shotgun start, without the shotgun, of course.

Away they went with winning in mind but there were no minds and bodies that could cope with the A-Team from Olinda.

The team was lead in by the individual winner Mike Muller who amassed 45 points on his own.

Added to this were considerable contributions by Bruce

Williams, Lou Herman and Tim Venton so that their final winning score for the best three cards was 118.

Some distance back in second place was the team of Dave Aitken, Ryan Aitken, Phil Rundle and Mark Starick on 111.

In third was the crowd of Mike Litchfield, Ken Sumsion, Brian McCoy and Steve Town one point back on 110.

Fourth were Graham White, Brock Reynolds, Dean Shannon and Peter Stevens with 108 with the rest somewhere towards obscurity.

The ladiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; competition was a great fight right down to the last hole but in the end it was the team of Anthea Crane, Joan Ellerbock, Paula Boyce and Raelene Pund that prevailed and were accorded the rapturous applause appropriate for the occasion.

This Friday the golf club is having the last of the four Friday night barefoot golf evenings.

At 5pm any golfers who are interested in having a hit are invited to get some coaching or simply wile away a couple of hours in the picturesque surrounds of the clubhouse and course while bashing the daylights out some golf balls.

AFTER a week of cold and rain, some warm sunshine greeted the Yarra Ranges Athletes on Saturday morning.

It was â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;bring a friend dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; too so plenty of enthusiastic, excited athletes made the most of the conditions.

None more so than Molly Dixon and Georgia Laven with both girls breaking respective 100 metre age group records.

Molly taking over five seconds off the record was the performance of the day.

The seniors competed at round three of the AV shield competition on Saturday afternoon at Ringwood.

It was another great turnout from the athletes that saw some outstanding performances.

Standouts were Ken Taylor and Lateisha Willis in the 100 metres, Lachlan Scully and Amanda Branson in the 1500 metres and Courtney DiGregorio in discus.

Entries for the EMR Region relays on 1 December have closed. Team lists will be available next weekend.
