TheLordGodtookthemanandputhiminthegardenofEdentotillitandkeepit. And theLordGodcommandedtheman,“Youmayfreelyeatofeverytreeofthegarden,butof thetreeoftheknowledgeofgoodandevilyoushallnoteat,forinthedaythatyoueatof ityoushalldie.”
NowtheserpentwasmorecraftythananyotherwildanimalthattheLordGodhadmade. Hesaidtothewoman,“DidGodsay,‘Youshallnoteatfromanytreeinthegarden’?” The womansaidtotheserpent,“Wemayeatofthefruitofthetreesinthegarden, butGod said,‘Youshallnoteatofthefruitofthetreethatisinthemiddleofthegarden,norshall youtouchit,oryoushalldie.’” Buttheserpentsaidtothewoman,“Youwillnotdie, for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God,[a]knowinggoodandevil.” Sowhenthewomansawthatthetreewasgoodforfood andthatitwasadelighttotheeyesandthatthetreewastobedesiredtomakeonewise, shetookofitsfruitandate,andshealsogavesometoherhusband,whowaswithher, andheate. Thetemptercameandsaidto him,“IfyouaretheSonofGod,commandthesestonestobecomeloavesofbread.” Buthe answered,“Itiswritten,‘Onedoesnotlivebybreadalone,butbyeverywordthatcomes fromthemouthofGod.’” Thenthedeviltookhimtotheholycityandplacedhimonthe pinnacleofthetemple,sayingtohim,“IfyouaretheSonofGod,throwyourselfdown,for itiswritten,‘Hewillcommandhisangelsconcerningyou,’and‘Ontheirhandstheywill bearyouup,sothatyouwillnotdashyourfootagainstastone.’”Jesussaidtohim,“Again itiswritten,‘DonotputtheLordyourGodtothetest.’”
Again,thedeviltookhimtoaveryhighmountainandshowedhimallthekingdomsofthe worldandtheirglory,andhesaidtohim,“AlltheseIwillgiveyou,ifyouwillfalldown and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! for it is written, ‘WorshiptheLordyourGod,andserveonlyhim.’” Thenthedevillefthim,andsuddenly angelscameandwaitedonhim.
