MOST POPULAR WATERSPORT. The paddleboarding experience and getting people into nature is what we live for at Starboard. For the very best sports experience, we develop gear that will make each session better.

The first tip is the paddle, that little piece of equipment is perhaps the most important part, that’s why we put so much work into developing our Enduro and Lima paddles. The Lima is also the most winning paddle in racing the last 3 years and Enduro is also used by the current World champ in the waves.

Inflatables are seeing good developments, and we have over the years pioneered the industry with the development of our welding technology for longevity, double chambers for stiffness and safety, and the Airline technology for an exceptional reflex and speed. What we did 8 years ago is now starting to become mainstream, and this year we would like to introduce the Wall, a dual thickness board, that gives you added stability and the opportunity to paddle a more narrow board.

On the hard board side the new Wedge and the new Pro’s are rejuvenating wave riding while the Sprint/ All stars just keeps on winning. A hot tip is that the 2021 All star is the most stable ever, utilizing the full extent of our dugout technology, that we pioneered 10 years ago.

After all these years we at Starboard have polluted the environment with our product production and travels. We know our impact and we act upon limiting our impact and through our planting of ½ million trees, to absorb ½ million ton CO2 over 20 years. Our internal plastic tax (perhaps the worlds first) has allowed us to collect 87,000 kg beach plastic through our ‘The Plastic Offset Program’ project.

We are not only balancing our impact by going ‘10 x Climate Net Positive’, we also introduced the concept of ‘Climate Past Positive’ making up for the whole of Starboards emissions, planting mangroves to sink down the equivalent estimated emissions from 1994.

When we first saw the sunset over Lake Taco in the year 2000, we sensed the inspirational vibrations and settled down. It’s an animal sanctuary, wild Monitor Lizards roam the area together with turtles, birds, cats and soi dogs.

Roy: We are currently engaged in streamlining the transition from 2D patterns, spreadsheets and physical masters for board specifications (A starboard specialty) to the CAD cam environment. We are streamlining our CAD information collection and input to work closely with our 25+ year workshop standards as well a taking advantage of newer 3d scanning technologies to generate CAD based masters. This should allow us to get products to market quickly and bring our riders the latest designs as efficiently as possible.

What advantages can you drive from using 3D technology compared to the traditional working methods in Starboard?

Roy: Probably the foremost advantage to CAD engineering is the ability to share concepts and designs globally in a matter of minutes. This allows us to communicate designs to everyone from team riders to manufacturing facilities in the blink of an eye.

CAD technology allows us to better visualize the projects before any material is cut allowing for significant materials savings. We can do very accurate weight and displacement calculations for the boards for example prior to fabrication. If target displacement is not met we can easily scale the boards design to meet our design criteria before any materials are cut.

Film: Another technology which will heavily benefit for our company is the ‘3D scanning technology’. It is a powerful tool which allows us to get the 3D file from any object. From this we can complete the ‘reverse engineering’ process to make an accurate drawing file to apply for other purpose. In the near future I hope we will consider having our own 3D scanner to speed up our design process.

Boards built from computer modeling, assuming your CNC equipment is well tuned will always be symmetrical, something possible but certainly very difficult to achieve by hand. It should be possible to make exact copies of boards with CNC, something seldom achieved by hand.

What do you personally think about the future of 3D design in the SUP industry?

Roy: Once we have developed an extensive library of the latest board models as well as some of the greatest designs form past years, we will be able to use computer analysis to determine where the new boards excel as well as which aspects of the older designs still remain applicable to todays SUP market.

Film: The technology of Computer Aided Design w (CAD), Comput-er-Aided Manufacturing (CAM), and Computer Aided Engineerin g(-CAE) has improved a lot and has become cheaper and easier for for users to navigate and use effciently. This improves the R&D process by reducing development period, reducing development cost, and reducing errors in manufacturing process.

Film: I hope to see many new technologies and tools in our company to help us advance quicker and better. Right now we have specialists who take care teaching us how to use the new tools and I am always exctied to apply these learnings to product developments.

Which projects do you plan to release next and what do you hope for the future on the development of 3D Technology?

ANSWER COMMONLY SEARCHED QUESTIONS ON What do I need to know before buying a paddle board?

Do you wear shoes when Paddle boarding?

Connor: What are you going to do? Are you going on a surf? Are you going to be on an open ocean? If you are interest-ed in doing some races you are going to be looking more for a 12’6” or a 14”. Surfing, we’ve got a whole line of Pro boards ranging from 6’ up to 10’. And that’s the first step you want to take. If you know what kind of category and discipline you are interested in then, you will be able to tune in specifically on that category.

Daniel: Before buying a paddle board, you need to make sure there is a Tiki logo on it so, you can’t go wrong. Then, you need to know the location where you want to use it

Connor: Great questions haha. When it’s cold, of course, you’ll need booties. Not necessarily shoes so, they are made out of wetsuit material. Shoes will get wet and heavy and if you fall off a paddle board, you will have a difficult time swimming so, I will suggest booties only.

Daniel: Personally, I prefer not to wear shoes. If it’s really cold, wear booties to keep you warm. I’ve seen people wear running shoes, wakeskate shoes so, it’s really a personal choice. Personally, I prefer to have direct contact with the board and feel the board on my toes and heels so, I prefer not to wear any but that’s a personal choice.

So, go and try. See what you prefer to do.

Is Paddle boarding difficult?

Is Paddle boarding harder than kayaking?

Connor: No! It’s actually one of the easiest water sport to teach and to learn. I’ve taught people from having no water skills in 1015 minutes, get them a nice, big, stable board and get them to feel comfortable by starting on their knees, paddling around and getting used to the technique and the strokes and then, they tend to stand up and feel comfortable on their feet. So, no worries. Easy. You can get it done.

Daniel: Paddle boarding is really easy, there is no age limitation, you can start at the age of 2-3 years old and finish at 100s. I have been paddling with all kinds of people in any kind of water and I can invite anyone to try it. It’s one of the easiest sports to start and it’s a lot of fun to practice so, just get out there and do it.

Connor: Yes and No. You are standing up so, you have way more sense of balance that you’ll have to take into consideration. Whilst kayaking, you are sitting down so, paddle boarding is to a certain degree harder. Having to paddle on one side and switching it, in my opinion is a lot easier. The double blade kayaking paddle needs a very technical technique. However, on a SUP you can step on the tail to turn a lot quicker and easier than typical kayakers can.

Daniel: It’s a little hard to compare because in one, you are standing on a board and in another, you are sitting. I feel like it depends on where you want to do it. But overall, I would say that possibly on a large board, paddleboarding can be an easier step on to the water. If you want to go on rapids, you want to start sitting down so, definitely, kayaking is going to be easier.

How do you paddleboard for beginners?

What is better, kayaking or Paddle boarding?

Connor: The biggest advice I give to new people coming into paddle boarding and all the beginners out there is to first grab your paddle and look at the scoop. It looks like a spoon, that you would use to eat cereal with. Quite a lot of the time people tend to have the paddle twisted around backwards. If this is the case, you would actually feel it in the handle, the handle would not fit nicely into the palm of your hand and the rage should be pointing away from you so, pointing towards the nose of the board.

Daniel: My best advice is to bring your friends along. Never go out and paddle by yourself. It’s always more fun to do things together and especially for safety. If you have someone with you that may have paddled before, that will make things a little bit safer. Always wear a leash. You can start on your knees if you don’t feel comfortable standing up. Take it step by step.

Daniel: Umm, that’s a good question. I prefer paddle boarding...

SUP.... Stand up paddling.... It’s a lot better.

What should I wear to stand up Paddle boarding?

Connor: For all the parents wondering if their kids can jump on there with the water wings and the flotation on their arms, better to get a life jacket because the big bulky arms are going to make it very difficult to paddle. Sunscreen, lycra and leash. Those are three things I bring with me before I get even to my paddle or board.

The lycra saves you from getting rashes on your chest and stomach area. The leash is the most important because that’s going to connect you to the board. And sunscreen to protect you from the UV rays.

Daniel: It’s good to be protected from the sun so, wear a hat or sunscreen. I usually wear long sleeve lycra if it’s really sunny or topless if it’s warm enough. So, wear what makes you feel comfortable and depending on the temperature. Be ready, be protected, and be comfortable.

How do you use paddle board paddle?

Daniel: You grab a paddle with your top hand on the handle and your lower hand on the middle of the shaft. Some people like to grab the shaft with both hands but that’s a little bit wrong. Make sure you have the top hand on the handle and another hand on the shaft. Once you get this positive, you can reach forward, and put the whole blade into the water and start pulling the blade toward you.

And once you get this movement going, you will see that the board it going straight.

Within the year 2000, our customers started to refer to us as the “Innovation Quality“ brand and we introduced that as our brand’s slogan. This keeps reminding ourselves that we need to deliver innovation and quality in all products, each and every time. We are in spirit the underdog brand that wants to make technological breakthroughs, to remain a positive impact and contributor within our industry.

An example is the double chamber construction which we introduced 10 years ago in our Ocean Rescue board. In addition to the added safety and meeting nautical regulations for coast line explorations, the second chamber also adds tremendous stiffness when inserted in the correct shape and position.

NOW, 10 YEARS LATER, WHAT MAKES STARBOARD’S INFLATABLE BOARDS STAND OUT FROM THE MASS AND WHY DO WE BELIEVE ITS AHEAD NOT ONLY IN INNOVATION BUT ALSO IN QUALITY? Starboard’s HQ is in Thailand, this allows us to make frequent quality control trips to work with our assembly lines, as the distance is short. At least once a month the Starboard R&D or the QC team travel to China to visit the factory, check the production lines, the final product or to introduce new methods.

The templates for all Starboard boards are precisely cut by a three-axis computer numerical controlled machine. Yet the perfect template is only as good as the alignment of the dropstitch fabric before cutting. That’s why a bi-directional reference system was put into place.

Starboard introduced the lightweight, extra stiff and robust woven dropstitch with fusion lamination. It took us five years of work before we were confident that the technology was market ready. For our value lines, we introduced linear knitted dropstitch to meet a lower weight, high stiffness and high standard reflex on the inflatable boards. You can see the uni-directional lines along the surface of the board.

Diving into the assembly details, when screening the logos and art on the boards, the block screen housing can be adjusted with a precision of ¼ of a millimeter, making sure that the position of the logos is centered and equal for all boards.

One of Starboard’s innovations that has left a remarkable positive impact on the world of inflatable boards is the welding technology.

This is done along the rails of the boards, for all of them, starting by the price point Zen boards all the way to the high end Deluxe Double Chamber boards. The mechanical bond created between the different layers of PVC material extends the life span of the inflatable boards to be in line with the life time of the PVC skin itself. Traditional adhesive methods create chemical bonds that are prone to the negative influence of sun radiation, corrosive salt water and the strain caused when folding the boards.

Whereas the mechanical bond of the PVC relies solely on the strength and durability of the material itself.

Once the board has its shape, all accessories are assembled on the board using CNC-cut templates, enabling great precision and repetition.

Perhaps the hardest hurdle in the production of the inflatable boards are Starboard’s quality control criteria, which is where the wheat is separated from the chaff.

The boards are inflated beyond the maximum recommended pressure for 72 hours in order to find leakages or weak spots on the boards.

The tolerance for the rocker lines of the boards lies within a couple of centimeters, which in the world of inflatable boards represents high challenges. Aesthetic criteria are the final details in order to approve the boards in the quality control. After this, boards are wrapped in paper and packed to be shipped.

RAIL STEERING The added side walls give extra comfort and control when rail steering, so it is easier to turn the board around without the need to step back to the tail.

SECONDARY STABILITY provided by the side walls on the top layer of the board. They keep the board from rolling when there is crosswind or side chop.

4.75” BACK RAILS allow for easier and more comfortable step back turning, since it is easier to sink the tail.

2.0” STIFFENING SIDE WALL added 2” side walls on top of the 4.75” board increases the stiffness and rigidity of the board. It also provides secondary stability and extra volume for more buoyancy.

Airports closed, beaches closed, curfews and mandatory lock down.

The whole world had to stay at home to be safe during these crazy times. Unfortunately for many, this meant no surfing, no windsurfing, no surf foiling, SUP foiling nor wing foiling.

Luckily for us, the Taco Crew, Taco Lake is part of our home, so access to a body of water was possible without breaking the law. But without waves and with very little wind, how were we supposed to foil?

Even the cable of the wake park was shut down...

The answer came as quick as the virus had This means using your body and an up-and-down movement to generate speed and lift in order to continue foiling. The next challenge was how to get up on the foil in the first place.

Fortunately, Tiesda has been working on the design of an electric boat and his latest prototype was strong enough to tow somebody on a foil board. And so, the fun begun. Taco Lake was empty except for us so we were foiling back and forth, left and right. Swapping boards, moving the foils, adjusting the wings and changing them became part of the common goal: to pump foil as far as possible with as little effort as possible.

But the life span on Tiesda’s electric boat’s battery was limiting. And so was the fact that only one person could be towed at the time. So, we decided to step up our game and learn how to dock start.

@ Starboard headquarters How and where to hold the board, which foot should go on the board first and how to run or jump were the biggest unknowns. It didn’t take long for us to get ahold of the dock start pump foiling technique. You should always run facing the water while holding the board flat and parallel to the surface, as high as possible without the foil showing out of the water. It should be the back-foot stepping on the board first, and if it is your right foot, it should be your right hand holding the rail close to the tail. Your hands when holding the board should be more or less in the same position where you want your feet to be, so you can use them as a reference. Just before you jump, you should put your front hand flat on the board, so you can control the lift while your feet are in the air.

Once on the board, you should glide for a bit before you start pumping. And then pump, and pump, and pump, and pump.

The added benefit of dock start pump foiling was, that changing or adjusting elements on the board or the foil was much easier and faster, since all our gear was already at the dock. Quicker than we would have thought, we went from 5’2” boards over to 4’8” and currently ride 3’11”. On top of that, the different Starboard foil wings, the different AK foil wings, as well as the masts were all available for us, so our pump foil evolution escalated quickly. Front wing sizes varied between 1300, 1500, 1600 and 1700cm2 with aspect rations between 4.0 and 7.0; the tail wings between 230 and 270cm2 while the mast heights range between 70 and 95cm. Without realizing it, we went from just having a blast amongst friends to also discovering a very demanding endurance workout with the kicks of foiling, which keeps us entertained and fit for the next possible foil trip.

On top of that we found the most efficient way of testing foils and boards in front of our office, as well as coming up with new concepts and ideas. These will be tested further and might perhaps pop up in the next year’s catalog.

FOIL WITH US TO PARIS AND LA.

Starboard’s windsurfing designs were just awarded with 2 Olympic disciplines towards the LA and Paris games.

Our next goal is to work with clubs and associations worldwide to strengthen Junior and Youth Windsurfing .

It’s a tremendous responsibility and the most exciting challenge yet for our Starboard group.

We are here to help redefine a sport and appreciate everyone’s help to carry forward the torch that was lit by Jim Drake and Hoyle Schweitzer when they invented windsurfing in 1967.

Lamination & press process

Each process has its own little secrets.

Our high grade core is individually cut by a CNC machine. Every core will go through the process of additional surface QC, the weight is checked serving as the first step in logging the material/ weight track record.

The key to a successful process is to each and every time arrange the fabric layers in their specified position. We laminate with Bio resin according to weight standard and carefully control the resin absorption of each layer of fabrics. Pressing is complex because we can not view the formation of bubbles or creasing of fabrics inside, we have to wait until we open the mold and as our aim is have no rework and a no spraying process, so we better get it all right the first time. Every process has to be done carefully, pressed in right pressure, using the correct temperature and perfect timings these are all completed by the people with the most high skilled experience. We have worked with our factory in Thailand since our first paddles in 2007, and look forward to keep on creating lighter, stronger and better performing paddles, year by year.

The fabric prepareation process Carbon prepregs, Carbon UD, Carbon biaxial and Carbon Twill, Flax / Carbon, and a multitudes of glass reinforcements. Fabrics are being carefully selected according to properties and angulations, while reinforcements are cut prepared as set of each blade’s sizes.

The main purpose is to create a super light weight blade that feels stable in the water and can handle years of hard paddling.

The inspiration for this painting came to me when I was paddling around the island of Lobos.

Lobos is a little island in front of Fuerteventura, with some beautiful point breaks. This is where my dad took me to teach me about the ocean and how to surf - he gave me a gift for life. We were are small group of people surfing on that island back then - a small group with a strong bond. For me it was the beginning of beautiful journey. When I started travelling for surfing and later on for Stand Up Paddling, I surfed and paddled in all the oceans with different people off different countries and different cultures. Stand Up Paddleboarding is one of the fastest-growing water sports.

Planet earth has been given an opportunity to take a breather, some time out to recover from the human bruises to its life. We get so much from nature but do we give enough back?

With COVID-19 shutting down our ability to produce products, travel long distances or use flight travel we were reducing CO2 emissions. Enabling a short chance for our planet to heal. However, the atmospheric levels of CO2 have risen sharply despite lockdown measures.

Solidifying our need to all take action in reducing our harmful footprints, and fast.

A way in which we can continue to reduce levels of CO2 is to consider what we are buying, and make choices based upon;

HOW MUCH CA R B O N D IO X ID E EA CH P R O D U C T IS R E L E A S IN G ?

W H AT C A N B E D O N E T O R E D U C E T H AT I M PAC T ?

Starboard has been working on reducing our negative by-product to the planet for all the years that the business has been running. Firstly it began with reducing our impact, which in 2017 our first carbon footprint analysis showed that we released 4,600 tonnes of CO2.

In 2018 we released 2,650 tonnes of CO2 through our way of working and in 2019 3,030 tonnes of CO2 was emitted. Comparisons between 2018 and 2019 showed no reduction, however, we are still much lower than our previous year in 2017.

Starboard works with Worldview International Foundation to plant mangrove trees in areas where these magical trees once thrived. Being able to reforest these trees not only means green areas come back, but it also means the biodiversity at all levels return. With biodiversity being a clear indication of climate change, due to how sensitive species are to changes, we can use this as a clear indicator of how much positive changes humans need to do in response to healing the planet.

So far half a million trees have been planted by Starboard. 263,397 of these are accounted for through our carbon footprint reports and event emission offsetting, where we planted between 10 and 20 times as many trees needed to absorb emissions. We have planted 20,000 mangroves to sink down the estimated amount of emissions we released since Starboard first became active in 1994. The remainder of 216,603 trees were planted by Starboard to engage with the climate park, to help them reach the common goal of planting for a better future of our world.

Now the Thor Heyerdahl Climate Park, where these mangrove trees have been planted, is at its full capacity. This now means we are supporting the movement to the next land of plantation within Myanmar. Worldview International Foundation has been in the process of securing new ground, finding areas where mangrove trees once stood, using their mighty power to sink the emissions created by humans, storing them deep into the ground once again.

We are ready to plant up the planet. Each board we produce, we plant one mangrove. One mangrove will absorb 1 tonne of Carbon Dioxide, the equivalent of the average board’s emissions being absorbed 10 times over. This is absorbed within its first 20 years of life and will continue to absorb for many years to come.

THE PLASTIC OFFSET PROGRAM

50,000 KG of plastic trash has been collected from the beaches in Thailand by Starboard’s Plastic Offset Program team.

This huge goal has come from Starboard’s target to collect 1.4 kg per each board produced. Starboard taxes ourselves internally to allow us to pay our very own Plastic Offset Program team to collect the trash found on the beaches in the Pattaya and Rayong areas of Thailand.

In 2020 the final clean up stretch revealed the remnants and reminders of how quickly the items that we dispose of can be found in our oceans and on the beaches.

What are we learning through POP and how?

Where does the waste go?

Onwards for the Oceans!

For each area where our team collects the ocean travelling waste, we have to ask permission. Working with the local government departments and local people has been an easy process which will help make further changes in the future. Our clear communication channels with the local departments and military allow us to understand the movement of plastic waste across the seas. On March 28th 2020, we were informed that a garbage patch swept up to the beaches of Pattaya and Rayong from the Gulf of Thailand. This is when we had a spike of waste on the beaches.

Our clean up team who face unnecessary waste on our nature have shared the following statement with us: “We would like to see less plastic waste, if possible I don’t want to see it at all. We will keep continuing to collect trash. It would be good if the Government and the CEO of the companies that are responsible for Ocean pollution. And have the same project implementation concept as this plastic offset project.”

10% of all the trash collected by Starboard’s POP team are fishing nets. The team would have to remove these nets from rocks where it is caught up as well as digging in the sand to dredge up what has been washed up on the waters edge over time.

The collection total for 2020/2021 will be based upon 1.1 kg of plastic trash per board. This is the equivalent to the amount of plastic waste entering the ocean, per person, per year.

Then came the partnership with the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF). EJF has made it possible for these fishing nets to be recycled into pellets that can then be used in products where the use of virgin plastic would then be decreased. Their general current focuses are upcycling the fishing net materials for roof racks for cars, and fins for surfboards. The latest developments include the creation of face shields to protect workers and providers where employees require close interactions with customers. The second development is ‘The Push Stick’ that has been a handy tool for contactless button touching in Thailand during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Starboard environmental team are taking on the challenge to have a zero-landfill policy. Meaning, to divert all that is collected into other forms, such as recycling or repurposing.

Why? Because we have seen first hand the lives of children change due to their involvement with SUPKids. As a SUPKids instructor I’ve taught a few children that at first would not take a step on a paddle board. They complained to me explaining they wanted to “be inside” and “play video games”. Eventually and inevitably as the camp began the children chose to paddle, and little did they know how transformative that choice would be. By the end of the week session these children never wanted to get off their board. We would have to call them saying “your parents are here to pick you up! It’s time to go home!” and they would make sure to squeeze in one more jump off the board laughing before coming in. It’s these moments that leave not only an instructor inspired, but the children as well, realizing that they can participate in something fun and yet so much bigger than themselves. ~Madline Leblanc, SUP Kids

Parley The small town of Cáhuil is located 10 kilometers from the Parley headquarters in Chile. It is an iconic touristic place in Pichilemu, at the mouth of the Nilahue estuary. It name comes from the Cahuil gull, a common bird in the area. Here is where the biggest artisanal production of coastal salt as well as oysters and mussels. The Cáhuil lagoon, surrounded by a vast wetland, is a suitable place Suping, but unfortunately, it is very polluted in its most unreachable sectors. Fortunately, with a large group of volunteers and thanks to our Starboard SUPs, it was the only way to clean an area that perhaps had never been intercepted before.

We will return to that place of incredible biodiversity that we want to protect.

Eco Innovation - Zane Schweitzer Getting Eco innovative at home, at work or during your activities can be a lot of fun, you just got to get a little creative and open your mind a bit. For example, my fiancĂŠ and I love to walk our dog on the beach and get in the water to catch a few waves or paddle around, and with every session we always come in with a #PoketOfPlastic. In most cases our findings go to the recycle bin or trash can, but we also have found a way to turn trash to treasure but utilizing our colorful pieces of microplastics or ghost nets into art installations that tell a powerful story for those that interact with the visually appealing pieces. We have reminders everyday to be aware of the plastic crisis at hand, from that plastic bag blowing down the street, to the plastic bottles planted amongst the bushes, to the remnants of hygiene and cosmetic products floating in our waterways.. Taking responsibility for our daily choices and actions that contribute to the plastic crisis is just as important as taking action towards solutions to the plastic crisis. When we do our daily Pocket Of Plastic Challanege or partake in a community Cleanup, we are reminded of the products and things that we can avoid or eco-innovate in our lifestyle and household.

The next life of sail and fishing net - Sea Monkey We take the sails and create the overall bag from them, thus rendering the backpack water and weather-resistant. The kites make up the top hood of the bag and the inner drawstring closing. Then the two internal pockets are made up of sail and lined with neoprene wetsuit material to protect your laptop or books. We put a layer of fishing net on the very front of the backpack to create a wet clothing or water bottle pocket. The shoulder straps are made of the seatbelts and a bit of rope creating smooth and adjustable length straps. The plastic waste we collect is melted down and re-moulded into toggles to close the bag, hold the straps and close the net pocket. They are also moulded into badges that are featured on the top of the bag! And to top it all off the whole thing is stitched together with recycled PET plastic thread. Each backpack is unique in colour and pattern. Using these same materials, we also create hip-bags and tote (beach) bags.

In August Plastic Tides Youth Leaders led a research expedition traveling over 30 miles across two watersheds through the Adirondack State Park of NY. The Adirondacks is the largest state park in the contiguous United States, including 10,000 lakes and over 30,000 miles of river. The Youth Leaders cleaned-up the shoreline along the way and surveyed plastic pollution in the area. Even in this remote wilderness, they collected over 1000 pieces of trash from the coastline surveyed.

These trips give fuel to the grassroots projects of the Youth Leaders through the Global Youth Mentorship Program Plastic Tides mission is to inspire and catalyze action toward a plasticfree future through adventure, education, and youth empowerment.

Since the success of my efforts with the Zero Waste consultation, I have been asked to chair a number of Young Persons Conferences, aimed at engaging with students to hear their thoughts, concerns, and proposed solutions addressing Climate Change and more work is in the pipeline about which I’m very excited.

I’ve been working closely with Bangor University students to make them aware of consumer behaviour and what’s happening on the ground during beach cleans and what I’m finding whilst I’m paddling on the water.

There is a keen focus on sustainability as part of the curriculum, such as considering a zero waste and circular economy which is essential for the next generation to inherit for a better planet. Furthermore, I’m delighted to be invited as a Partner for the Plastic Research Centre for Wales based at Bangor University. It’s a multidisciplinary group investigating all aspects of plastic use, plastic pollution and plastic alternatives.

Going forward I would like the opportunity to work with the non-converted, we can’t shout our message louder. We need to alter the messaging. For me I see a huge value introducing people to nature, for them to have an emotional connection which in turn will change their consumer behaviour so they are conscious and ethical shoppers.

I have witnessed shifts in attitude when I have been fortunate enough to take groups out for a SUP. It’s a perfect opportunity to engage naturally with nature and to gain an appreciation to protect it.

To get started we need stability and since volume works on leverage, the further away the volume is from your feet, the more stability it creates. We placed the volume in the rails, at the square nose and at the little “platform” at the tail of the board.

Stability is also created by having the feet as close to the foil as possible. We do not want to foil with “High Heels”, so the thinner a board is, the better it rides.
