Art & Design

Year 8
Year 7
Year 7 were being creative with artwork inspired by Picasso. They started by making collages based on either his Blue Period or Rose Period, exploring different shapes and ways to arrange them. After finishing their collages, they moved on to sketching their designs and experimenting with coloured pencil techniques.
“Everyone has put in a lot of effort and should feel really proud of everything they’ve achieved this year in art!”

Year 8 were exploring the concept of juxtaposition, inspired by the work of artist Brno Del Zou. They have been experimenting with creative compositions by combining images and playing with the scale of facial features to produce striking effects.
“They’ve shown great focus and creativity this year and should be proud of what they’ve achieved!”

Year 9
Year 9 have been exploring the theme of black and white, recently taking inspiration from the artist Anna Higgie. They have been experimenting with scale and composition as well as tone, adding bold shapes around their images to reflect her unique style.
“Their creativity has really shone through, and they’ve produced some fantastic work this year!”

French
"Just like that... We're at the end of the school year. It has been an absolute pleasure for me to join Eden Boys School, Preston and begin to show as many as possible how French can be a fantastic language to learn. Although not easy, it opens doors to a different culture; trips abroad in future and a potential University Day trip visit to see what studying French at degree level is really like. Learning a language isn't just about sitting in the classroom. Although this is of course important, it is not the only thing that is of great importance when learning about a different country and its culture. During the next academic year, we can dive into some French culinary specialties, the type of food Mr. Ayton used to eat growing up and experiencing life in France; learn how to make some French food that often goes unnoticed and is forgotten by those outside of "La Francophonie". We might even end up in Paris on a school trip this time next year! Watch this space on that one! I'll end by saying "Bonnes vacances et Reposez- vous bien où que vous les passiez!"

Year 7 in the Spotlight: Future Leaders, Present Voices
After a rich and rewarding year exploring powerful and thought-provoking texts such as The Red Room, Romeo and Juliet, Identity Poetry, Oliver Twist and Face, our brilliant Year 7 students have turned their attention to making a difference in the real world. During the Summer Term, students have been working hard to develop their speaking and listening skills, while also embodying our STAR values of Service, Teamwork, Ambition, and Respect through a very special project: The Year 7 Campaign Challenge.

In groups of four, students have researched and planned their own campaigns focused on key issues they believe should be addressed within the school or wider community. Through our study of campaign structures and persuasive techniques, each group produced:
1. A persuasive speech carefully crafted using rhetorical devices.
2. A leaflet that outlines their party’s values and proposed solutions.
3. A poster to visually promote their message to others.
These campaigns have covered a range of passionate, wellconsidered topics from improving school meals and promoting mental health support, to increasing student voice in school decisions and improving local environmental care.
Pupils then performed their speeches within their classes, delivering their ideas with confidence, enthusiasm, and flair. Every student showed real courage and commitment, demonstrating not only their writing and performance abilities but also their ability to collaborate, problem-solve, and lead with empathy.
The spirit of teamwork throughout this project has been exceptional. Students supported one another, offered constructive feedback, and encouraged their teammates with warmth and maturity.
It has been inspiring to see so many young voices stepping up to share their ideas and work together for a common goal. Their growth in oracy, confidence, and creativity has been a joy to witness. Now, the winning team from each Year 7 set will go on to deliver their campaign speeches to our esteemed Headteacher, Mrs Patel, and the entire Year 7 cohort on Tuesday 15th July. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to put their ideas forward to a real decision-maker and they couldn’t be more excited!

The overall winning team will receive a special prize to recognise their outstanding efforts. Let’s see if these young, innovative minds can convince Ms Patel to implement some of their forward-thinking policies!
We are incredibly proud of the way our Year 7 students have risen to this challenge. Their voices are powerful, their ideas are bold, and their teamwork has been truly admirable. We cannot wait to see what they go on to achieve next.

Eden Boys’ Preston – Big Bang finalists
This year marked an exciting milestone for our science department as we launched the Big Bang Challenge for the very first time. A dedicated group of our Year 7 and 8 pupils rose to the occasion, embarking on their ambitious project in late November.

With the global issue of Zero Hunger as their focus, the students united around a single, powerful mission: to save lives through sustainable innovation. After extensive research, they explored the cutting-edge fields of aeroponics and hydroponics advanced agricultural techniques that enable plants to grow without soil, using significantly less space and water. Their goal was to harness the power of artificial intelligence to revolutionize food production, especially in areas where resources are scarce.
Blending their knowledge of science and computing, the pupils designed and built an AI-powered robot capable of managing these smart growing systems. From the blueprint stage to final assembly, they ensured that every material used was both sustainable and efficient, aligning with their mission of environmental responsibility.
After months of determination, innovation, and teamwork, the group was thrilled to learn that they had reached the final stage of the competition a testament to their creativity, hard work, and forward-thinking vision. Their next stop: The Big Bang Fair in Birmingham, where they proudly presented their project in front of thousands of attendees, sharing their inspiring ideas with the wider STEM community.
We are extremely proud of their hard work and dedication. Their efforts have laid the foundation for future innovation, and we look forward to seeing what they achieve next.

Mastering Chemistry: The Art of Crystal Formation

This half term, key Stage 3 students embarked on an exciting journey into the chemistry of salt preparation. The focus of the practical was creating copper sulphate crystals, a hands-on experiment that allowed students to link theoretical concepts with practical skills. Through this activity, they explored key processes such as filtration, evaporation, and crystallization. The practical provided a perfect blend of teamwork, precision, and scientific discovery, helping students deepen their understanding of chemistry.
The experiment began with careful planning as students worked collaboratively to outline the steps needed to prepare their crystals safely and effectively. They reviewed the chemical reaction between sulfuric acid and copper oxide, understanding how salts are formed when acids react with bases. The teams then demonstrated their measurement skills, using measuring cylinders to ensure accurate volumes of sulfuric acid were used. They paid special attention to detail, recognising that precision would be essential for successful results.
Throughout the experiment, students revisited their understanding of important scientific processes. Filtration helped them remove impurities, evaporation enabled them to concentrate the solution, and crystallization showcased how slow cooling produces well-formed crystals. This practical experience tied directly to realworld applications, helping students appreciate how salts are prepared for use in industries such as pharmaceuticals and food production.
Teamwork played a crucial role in the success of this experiment. Each group divided tasks efficiently, ensured safety protocols were followed, and supported one another to achieve the best possible outcome. The attention to detail demonstrated by students was particularly commendable, as it resulted in larger, highquality crystals. By the end of the practical, every group proudly displayed their sparkling blue creations.

Geography
Leyland Business Park

Year 10 pupils had the opportunity to conduct field work as part of their Geography GCSE course. This involving putting their theoretic knowledge from the classroom into a practical, real-world scenario, enhancing their understanding of fluvial processes. Pupils visited a river in the Forest of Bowland with the focus of our investigation being to study how a river's characteristics change with distance downstream.
Pupils had the opportunity to measure and analyse various aspects of the river, including its width, depth, velocity, and sediment size at different points along its course.
The trip was both educational and enjoyable, fostering a deeper appreciation for our natural environment. We thank you for your support in making this valuable learning experience possible.
Social Change in History
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”
George Santayana-The Life of Reason: Reason in Common Sense.

This term, our Eden Boys’ historians have focused on making connections between events, eras and changes they have studied this term, throughout the year and from Year 8-11, their study of History as a whole. These ‘golden threads’ of change and continuity that shape our study of the past help us to recognise the achievements and failures of local, national and international leaders through time.
We bid farewell to our Year 11 cohort, who have demonstrated expertise in linking factors for change within the development of medicine in Britain in their GCSE study and factors for control of Wales and England in their Norman conquest depth investigation. The History team wish you all the best on your next steps and hope your study of the past will help you develop into the young men that will shape a brighter future.
Year 7 have made judgements on three phases of the Hundred Years’ War, assessing if the English or French can be viewed as the victors in this bloody Middle Age conflict. Some outstanding links were made by our newest EBP historians between English foreign policy during the conflict and their previous study of social unrest in Britain due to the impact of the Black Death and reasons for the Peasant’s revolt.

In Year 8 pupils used local history and Blackburn as a case study to make links between the indentured mill workers of the cotton mills of the Northwest and Britian’s role in the Transatlantic slave trade and abolition.
Year 9 build upon their learning of the development of workingclass protest groups of the 18th and 19th Century to the development and spread of Communism. Their understanding of the consequences of the First World War in the first term of this year was extended beyond Europe in their final study of the term looking at the impact of Western intervention in the Middle East. Justified assessments of the conflict in the Middle East today were traced back through time to the decisions made by the victors of the Great War and World War II.

Year 10 have had success in the new GCSE specification, linking their Year 9 study of the growth of Nazism and Communism after WWI, to their depth study of Germany’s decent to a totalitarian extreme right-wing government and society. Year 10 also called upon knowledge built in Year 9 to explain the reasons for the Cold War and the development of the nuclear arms race that has dominated global politics ever since.

Their delicious spread brought smiles and a sense of togetherness to our Year 10 and 11 students. A heartfelt thank you to staff for making this a memorable moment for our pupils during this blessed time
Hajj programmes
As part of our commitment to providing a comprehensive and enriching educational experience, Eden Boys' School, Preston has continued to nurture pupils through timely spiritual sessions. During the first 10 days of Dhul Hajjah, our dedicated FCE team delivered spiritual sessions to grant students a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, a cornerstone of the Islamic faith.
During these sessions, students explore various facets of the Hajj pilgrimage, including the historical journey of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the rituals performed during Hajj, the significance of each ritual, and the profound lessons that can be drawn from this sacred journey.
Our key objectives in incorporating these podcasts into the curriculum are:
1. Cultural and Religious Appreciation: Helping students to understand and respect the rich traditions and practices of Hajj.
2. Faith Formation and Reflection: Encouraging personal growth and spiritual reflection through the exploration of Hajj's profound significance.
3. Global Awareness: Fostering empathy and an appreciation for diversity by highlighting the global unity and communal aspects of Hajj.
These Hajj sessions have provided our students with a valuable perspective on this pivotal religious event, enriching their spiritual journey and enhancing their global awareness.

A group of our pupils recently visited the Cambridge Central Mosque; an enriching experience aimed at deepening their faith and character. This visit allowed pupils to appreciate the mosque's architectural beauty and environmental sustainability while fostering a greater understanding of Islamic practices and shared values.

Sunnah Sports/Physical Activity

Pupils have been engaging in weekly after-school enrichment sessions focused on Sunnah sports, including activities such as archery. These sessions take place within school and are designed to promote physical well-being while embodying the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Through these activities, pupils develop discipline, focus, and a deeper appreciation for prophetic traditions in a supportive and enriching environment.

Faith Night – A Memorable Farewell for Year 11 Leavers
To honour our departing Year 11 Faith Ambassadors, we hosted a beautiful Faith Night – a heartfelt evening of brotherhood, prayer, and reflection. Pupils reflected on their journeys through school, the values they’ve developed, and the memories they’ll carry forward. It was a meaningful and spiritual send-off, reminding all of the importance of faith and purpose beyond the classroom.

At the start of the Islamic New Year, assemblies and form-time reflections focused on the powerful lessons from the month of Muharram and the Day of Ashura. Pupils explored the story of Musa (alayhis-salam) and the values of faith and dedication. These character-building discussions helped our boys to reflect on their own choices and reminded them of the strength found in faith, patience, and perseverance.

Looking Ahead
Beyond these specific events, Faith Character Education has remained a guiding principle in our daily school life. Our students have been encouraged to demonstrate empathy, kindness, and respect towards one another, fostering an environment of inclusivity and understanding. The Islamic values of justice, integrity, and humility have permeated our classrooms, promoting a holistic character development among our students.
As we embark upon a new academic year, we remain committed to nurturing our students' faith, character, and academic growth. We are excited for the upcoming opportunities to further develop our students' understanding of their faith, engage in acts of service, and cultivate a strong sense of social responsibility.
We extend our gratitude to our dedicated staff, supportive parents, and, most importantly, our incredible students for their unwavering commitment to embodying the principles of Faith Character Education. Together, we have created a nurturing environment that nurtures faith, character, and academic excellence.
May the summer break provide us all with a chance to reflect, recharge, and renew our commitment to the values that shape our school community. We eagerly anticipate the forthcoming year, filled with opportunities for growth, learning, and further strengthening our bonds of faith and unity. Wishing you all a blessed and joyful summer!
Ashura and Muharram – A Time for Reflection and Character-Building
Transition
Transition from Year 6 to Year 7: A Journey of Growth and Self-Discovery
Year 6 Transition Day: Stepping Boldly into the Future Our Year 6 pupils embraced the excitement and challenges of Transition Day with confidence and curiosity. The day was filled with engaging activities designed to build friendships, boost independence, and introduce the rhythm of secondary school life. From navigating new classrooms to bonding with form tutors, every moment helped lay the foundation for a smooth and happy start in September.
Our Year 6 Transition Day was packed with fun and discovery, giving pupils a lively taste of secondary school life. From the energetic dodgeball PE lesson where teamwork, tactics, and a few dramatic dodges stole the show to brain-teasing challenges in English and Maths, everyone had a chance to shine. In Languages, pupils enjoyed learning useful phrases and exploring new cultures, sparking excitement about the journey ahead. Whether they were solving puzzles or sprinting across the sports hall, each moment helped them build confidence and feel more at home in their new environment.
After a morning full of engaging lessons and activities, Year 6 pupils tucked into classic fish and chips, sharing stories and laughter over lunch. The afternoon brought sunny fun outside, with games and relaxed chats helping everyone feel at ease. A warm welcome from the headteacher and other staff rounded off the day, giving pupils a chance to ask questions and build connections ahead of September.

Transition Day: Y6 Stepping into Year 7
Our recent Year 6 Transition Day gave pupils a chance to experience life as a Year 7 student and what a fantastic day it was!
In English, the new Year 7s took part in a thoughtful and creative lesson designed to help them reflect on their feelings about starting secondary school. The session began with a fun icebreaker, where each student introduced themselves and shared one interesting fact. It was a great way to build confidence and learn something new about each other.

The main task of the lesson was writing a letter to their future selves. In the letter, pupils explored their thoughts and feelings about moving up to high school: their fears, what they’re excited about, and what they’ll miss about primary school. Before writing, the class had a warm and honest discussion about the things that make us feel nervous about this big change - like getting lost, making new friends, meeting new teachers, or handling more homework.
It’s completely normal for Year 6 pupils to feel a mix of excitement and anxiety as they prepare to leave the familiar world of primary school behind. For many, high school can feel big, unfamiliar, and a little overwhelming at first. But what this lesson showed is that they are more ready than they think. Their letters were thoughtful, mature, and full of self-awareness. And even though some nerves were shared, there was also a clear sense of hope and curiosity about the new experiences waiting for them.
Some pupils even chose to perform their letters in front of the class, showing real bravery and empathy for one another. There were smiles, a few giggles, and even some emotional moments as they reflected on everything they’ve achieved so far and looked ahead to what's next.
Transitioning to high school is a big step - but with the courage, kindness, and determination shown in this lesson, it’s clear these pupils are going to be just fine. In fact, they’re going to be great.
