IMPACT REPORT FY 2022

Thank you for walking beside our STAR participants and their families on their journeys.
In 2022, you helped STARs flourish by generously supporting life-changing programs, including vocational training, life skills development, sports leagues and creative expression classes.
As our community continues growing, the need for more engaging programs to serve individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities has become even more pressing. Last year, 57 individuals joined STARability, while another 64 waited to enroll in the Trailblazer Academy and Junior Trailblazer Academy, our popular day programs for adults and high school students.
This growing demand inspired us to create new initiatives and to build on the innovative programs that have helped STARs thrive. STARs participated in new life enrichment classes, more recreational activities including golf and trivia nights, and used their creative talents to expand our product line at the Star Store & Studio.
The following pages highlight a few of our STARs and how they brightened our lives over the past year through their spirit and ability. They found jobs, volunteered 3,020 hours throughout our community and formed enduring relationships with their peers and our staff.
We hope you’re inspired, as we are, by all that our bright STARs have accomplished.
As always, thank you for helping to shine light on ability, not disability.
With warmest regards,
To transform the lives of individuals with disabilities through social, vocational and educational connections to the community, while strengthening awareness and respect for individual abilities.

Our innovative and creative programs are designed to foster a sense of purpose, cultivate friendships and connections, and instill skill sets that build confidence. Additionally, programs offered on virtual platforms allow STARs to connect with one another and engage in meaningful classes, activities and workshops from anywhere.
• Our Trailblazer Academy program gives participants a unique opportunity to receive hands-on training, learn vocational skills to join the workforce and discover life skills to become more independent.
• The Junior Trailblazer Academy is an after-school program for high school students that introduces the Trailblazer Academy curriculum to help prepare students for young adulthood and life after high school through life skills development and vocational training.
• STAR Connections engages our participants and the community through continuing education, art and creative expression workshops, health and wellness classes, sports leagues and many other activities.
• The Vocational Services program matches our STARs with employers who believe in an inclusive workplace. Our STARs work in offices providing clerical support or custodial services, grocery stores stocking shelves and restaurants helping wait and kitchen staff. They love their work and are proud of it.
• Our Social Enterprises program features the STAR Store & Studio, an inclusive environment for participants to have vocational training or paid employment helping to maintain the store and create beautiful candles, jewelry, cards and ornaments.
• Virtual Engagement programs help STARs connect with one another and engage in innovative classes and activities from anywhere. Among the program’s benefits are independence and autonomy through routine, personal space and accessible activities to STARs who are homebound or waiting to join in-person programming.
• The THRIVEability Garden serves as a vehicle to teach critical life skills to STARs enrolled in the Junior Trailblazer Academy and Trailblazer Academy, our communitybased day programs. They are working with instructors, volunteers and community partners to revitalize the garden.
One of the biggest goals for my family and for many others in the area has been finding, creating and sharing services and resources, not only for our own family members, but for all the individuals that need access to these resources. Over the years, watching the growth of Hannah, as well as the growth throughout Naples and Southwest Florida to create options for jobs, social events, skill development, housing, etc. so that these individuals can become a productive part of society has been so important to me and my family.
STARability has been a wonderful organization in providing tools and opportunities for participants and their families, helping us grow our support network and foster additional awareness and outreach within the community.

One of these super STARs is 17 and unstoppable.
Alexis is a part of the Junior Trailblazer Academy, our after-school life skills program. You would think that Alexis would be busy enough with her schoolwork at Naples High and the skills she’s learning in the program.
But she finds time to do more.
Alexis is always eager to tell people about her experience in the Junior Trailblazer Academy, often volunteering at events or manning a booth at a local art fair. Stop by the STAR Store & Studio, our social enterprise, and you’ll see her creating some of the products that are sold there, such as candles, greeting cards and jewelry. Her favorite activity is making bracelets because she can explore and fine-tune her creative abilities.
At last count, Alexis had volunteered more than 30 hours of her time.
As her grandfather explains, Alexis doesn’t see her disability as a disadvantage. She focuses on what she can do and contribute. She puts all her energy into engaging her community, helping where she’s needed and practicing what she’s learning at school and STARability.
• 57 individuals joined STARability.
• The Trailblazer Academy turned 5 years old in FY 2022.
• By the end of FY 2022, 64 STARs were enrolled in the Trailblazer Academy.
• The All-Star Basketball game returned in 2022 with STARs facing off against each other. Board member Jeff Maconaghy refereed the game.
• STAR Store sales reached almost $89,000.
At STARability, we recognize the life-changing impact our programs and services have on our STARs and their families. In FY 2022, we continued expanding our programs so our STARs could keep building social connections.
Participants come together with friends, make new connections and play all-time favorite board and card games, trivia and much more.
Participants explore ways to set themselves up for daily success by learning valuable life skills in cleanliness, health, safety, nutrition, wellness, finance and more.
This new program focused on golf fundamentals. STARs played short hole courses, worked on their strokes and techniques. They exercised, focused on their scores and had a great time. A special thank you to the Payne Stewart Kids Golf Foundation for donating equipment and Paradise Coast Sports Complex for hosting our STARs.
More than 300 people ran, walked and rolled across the finish line at the 4th Annual 3K Fun Run, Walk & Roll. This family-friendly, all-abilities event was the most successful 3K to date, with more than $53,000 raised to support our mission.
The 2022 STAR Gala: Light the Night was record-setting, thanks to almost 600 guests and donors who gave $3.2 million.
At 73 years young, Neil Gerald is no stranger to charitable giving.
Gerald lives his life by the motto that “charity begins at home.” When he found himself in a financial position to help others, he seized the opportunity to make a difference and hasn’t stopped since.
Giving back became a kind of tradition for Gerald, which he credits mostly to his late wife, Virginia’s, heart for philanthropy. She was very involved in the church and gave to countless charities. Gerald has found his own passion for giving, such as helping young children who live in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
After working with Naples architect John Cooney and his family, the couple discovered a shared passion for charitable giving. As the Geralds got to know John, his wife, Carrie, and their son Brett, they learned about STARability, a cause close to the Cooney family.
Brett has been enrolled in the Trailblazer Academy, our signature pioneering adult day program, since its establishment in 2016.
As the Geralds learned more about our mission and the growing needs within the community, they became longtime, generous supporters.
When these kids get out of high school, there’s no support for them. I believe a kid like Brett is truly being helped by programs such as this. They are a special and important member of our community and desire to be productive in some way – and STARability gives them that chance.
~Neil Gerald, STARability Donor The 2022 STAR Gala: Light the Night was a sold-out event with almost 600 guests. Brett Cooney, STAR participantEvery April, World Autism Month raises awareness and increases understanding and acceptance for families affected by autism. This year, STARability Foundation is asking the community to join in helping create a world where all people with autism, across the spectrum and throughout the life span, can reach their full potential – and keep the support going all year long.
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. The condition typically starts during childhood and continues into adulthood. There is not simply one type of autism, but many subtypes that are influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. The ways in which people with autism learn, think and problem-solve, as well as the amount of care they require in their daily lives, varies greatly.
Though people with autism experience the world differently, with support, they have the potential to live fulfilling and impactful lives.
“Our goal is to ensure everyone in need has access to programs, resources, and an educated and respectful community that can provide opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live a meaningful and productive life,” said Karen Govern, CEO of STARability Foundation. “We do this through advocacy, programs that focus on vocational training, continuing education, teamwork, social engagement and community involvement, and providing resources and support to families throughout their journey.”
The experienced and compassionate team at STARability is dedicated to promoting solutions for the needs of individuals with autism and their caregivers, allowing them to express themselves through music, art and dance, use technology to interact with others, and find rewarding jobs. They take pride in helping them reconnect with old friends and form bonds with new ones.
Currently, STARability offers a variety of programs
that promote inclusive employment, engagement and independence such as family forums; STAR Connections – creative expression workshops, wellness classes, continuing education and sports leagues; the Trailblazer Academy – a pioneering day program; employment services; and the STAR Store and Studio.
At STARability Foundation, about 60% of the individuals they serve are on the autism spectrum.
“At STARability, we refer to the individuals in our programs as STARs because they brighten our lives, our community and our world,” said Govern. “Our STARs inspire our work and spark our passion to create new initiatives and to build on the innovative programs that help them thrive. STARs show us again and again the achievements and milestones they can accomplish –reaching new goals each day, developing critical life skills, and laying the foundation for a positive future.”
From these real-world experiences, and with the support and encouragement from staff, families and the community, the individuals in these programs can continue to grow in their daily lives.
“Together, we can build a kind, inclusive place to shed a light on ability, not disability and help our STARs shine bright,” said Govern. Founded in 1983, STARability offers programs that focus on vocational training, continuing education, teamwork, social engagement and community involvement. Their compassionate team supports people with disabilities by providing life-transforming opportunities that emphasize teamwork and a connection to the community while strengthening awareness and respect for individual abilities. The night was bright for the STARability Foundation, as the annual gala set a new record by raising $3.2 million last month in Naples. The STAR Gala Light the Night, STARability Foundation’s largest fundraising event of the year, annually raises money to support programs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Almost 600 guests attended the soldout event on Feb. 12 at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples.
An anonymous donor offered a $1 million challenge match during the fund-aneed portion of the gala. Guests met the challenge and matched the gift as auctioneer Rick Gallo called the record-setting event.

“We are overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone who supported the STAR Gala and who made this event so inspiring,” said STARability CEO Karen Govern. The Gala has reached new heights because of our dedicated co-chairs, Holly Shapiro and Jennifer Marchionda, and engaged committee members. The passion for our mission and the generosity that supporters and volunteers showed at the Gala will transform the lives of our STARs and their families. Thank you for helping our STARs reach for the stars.”

“At STARability, we feel blessed for the opportunity to make successful employment matches that benefit both the business and our STARs,” said Madison McNally, STARability’s Chief Program Officer and Trailblazer Academy Director. “Our partnerships with organizations such as Driftwood are vital to our mission of providing all individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities with access to programs, resources and opportunities to lead meaningful and productive lives.”
STARability Foundation was recently awarded a generous $20,000 grant from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation to expand programming for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
“The Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation recognizes STARability is an essential and unique organization, and we are proud to present a grant in support of their work in our community,” said Mary Beth Geier, Florida Director of the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation. “STARability finds innovative and meaningful ways to engage individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and creates life-changing opportunities for them. With this grant, we look forward to the continued impact, growth and change that STARability is able to offer through the Trailblazer Academy program. We wish their participants continued success in achieving their dreams and goals.”
The Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation was created in 2004 by Best Buy founder, Dick Schulze, to give back to the communities where Dick and his family grew up — in Minnesota, where he built Best Buy to become the world’s largest consumer electronics retailer and in Florida, where he now maintains a permanent residence. Schulze and his family believe that a good education, a supportive family and a strong work ethic prepare children for a successful future. To support that belief, they support organizations such as STARability that operate in the areas of human and social services, education, including college and early learning scholarship awards and health and medicine. STARability offers a variety of
innovative, results-driven programs designed to accommodate the needs of each unique participant. Their centerpiece program, The Trailblazer Academy, is a pioneering day program that teaches individuals life skills, offers vocational training, and connects participants to the community through life-enriching and social experiences.

The Summer Camp was co-led by three STARability participants and employees of the STAR Store & Studio: Liv DeAngelis, Chloe Kahn and Caitlin Roggia, alongside STAR Store & Studio Director Carrie Jo Terry. Through this experience, STARs are able to practice leadership, pride and skill development.
“STARability is thrilled to continue our partnership with River Park,” said Cayla Childs, STARability’s director of Social Enterprise. “The experience is as meaningful and special for our participants as it is for the campers.
