Welcome to StAnza’s 15th annual festival. Our themes for ‘The Year of Creative Scotland 2012’, are The Image and Poetry by Degrees which we bring together in our first ever all-day poetry workshop at the home of the renowned twentieth-century artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, and in collaborations with Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. Lavinia Greenlaw, this year’s Poet in Residence, joins Chase Twichell, Christopher Reid, Kwame Dawes and Grace Nichols, all new to StAnza, plus Jackie Kay, Kathleen Jamie, Michael Symmons Roberts, poets from Poland, Germany, New Zealand, Sweden, Canada, Palestine, Macedonia and from across the UK, visual artists, musicians, actors, film-makers and other writers, as well as a trio of Irish poets to mark the St Patrick’s Day weekend. We also focus on all that is avant-garde, experimental and cutting-edge in today’s poetry with a dedicated strand featuring poet and critic Keston Sutherland, the Dutch contemporary composer/poet Rozalie Hirs, plus sound installations around town commissioned from Holly Pester. As always we are grateful to our funders, sponsors and partners whose support and encouragement have made StAnza 2012 possible.

There will be lighter entertainment on the programme as well, cabaret performances every lunchtime, late night poetry and music events in the Byre bar/bistro, and watch out for cakes galore. There’s even a chance for the lucky few to enjoy afternoon tea with Jackie Kay. Add to all that actors David Hayman and Karen Dunbar on the StAnza stage, breakfast panel events over coffee and pastries, a masterclass from David Morley, along with a plethora of workshops, exhibitions, talks and cross-media performances to ensure that StAnza 2012 offers something for everyone. You will always find a space to relax or chat in the festival’s lively and friendly hub at the Byre Theatre, Scotland’s only 5 star arts venue, where Kingarroch, who now run the café bar/bistro, look forward to extending a welcome to everyone attending StAnza 2012. Workshops, Masterclasses & Slam Workshops: These are participant only events, open to 16 persons who have the opportunity to work directly with the poet. Masterclass: This is open to the public to listen or take part in discussion. Poems for inclusion must be submitted in advance. Submitting: A ticket for the masterclass must be purchased prior to submitting any work. To be considered for inclusion, send 3 poems on “The Image” up to 35 lines long to the contact below. Each submission must quote the reference number on the event ticket and include a note of the entrant’s name, email address and/or phone number.
