BARHOUSE From the life of a rose, breaking through concrete would be the last thing one may think to happen.

From the pressures and directions life gives us, like the rose defying the odds shows strength and durability.

The Barhouse gives a new take on life giving the option to take different paths exploring various views

For my graduate thesis choosing to focus on residential design put my creativity back on track giving it new life.

Experiencing some life changing events throughout my college matriculation I wanted to showcase that into my design work.

Finishing my final studio with my knowledge and improved creativity was bittersweet; for I truly came along way in design.

The Barhouse is my take on minimalist contemporary living. Every level of the home has its own program whether it is a private or public space. At the ends of the concrete bars there is a framing view of the Malibu coast. Each bar designates a forced view without giving the chance to see the surroundings and forces the sight onto the perspective. All of the views showcase the nature surrounding the home whether it is the ocean or the canyon in which the home is rested on. At the top of the structure is a glass bar that allows the dweller to see all of the wonderful scenes that surround the home.

A green roof above the glass box demonstrates how life is continued through the home and connects the structure to the concrete rose and rising above adversity. Life is very precious and delicate and it takes time to really understand how precious life can be. When we react to the challenges that get thrown our way; that is when we truly embrace the meaning of life.

LAS FLORES MESA DRIVE Mimicking the contours of the site onto the roof was a thought of continuing the earth through the home.

Separating the programs played on the concept of distance and how each bar gave reference to life and the different journeys.

This notion demonstrates the highs and lows of life regarding to the emotions people feel.

Observing a roses circular pattern, stacking of the petals, and outward bloom gave ideas of placement and directional movement.

Circular penetration through the program gives emphasis on the rotation of the each bar portraying turning points.

Stacking and positioning bars presented the thoughts of privacy and public space within the dwelling.

PVAMU CULTURAL CENTER The Prairie View A&M University Cultural Center is a place where the arts meet living.

For many, art is not only a hobby but an expression. Cultural centers are known mainly for the focus of art and culture. The Prairie View campus has grown tremendously and is in need for a space for students to gather for activities as well as housing. This center will not only include living quarters but will also accommodate students who want to learn. The living quarters that are within the center will also maintain privacy for the students that live in them.

The Cultural Center’s concept came from the arts and folding architecture. The metal fins started off mimicking a stereo’s LED lights that follows the beat of music.

Applying the folding perception helped display the program in a way that breaks up the private and public spaces.

The floating continuous fold serves as a gateway to the other building just passed the centralized gathering space.

While designing the center many other designs came into play. Creating the space that brought the two buuildings together became a important factor of the project by being the main gathering space for the students and community.

ARCHITECTURAL FABRICATION LAB AND LIBRARY The Prairie View A&M University School of Architecture is home to many students. For some time now the school’s fabrication lab and architectural library has needed some major enhancements.

The added space will include a variety of equipment allowing students to build, develop and test ideas.

State of the art equipment will be housed throughout this new facility. Latest laser cutters, CNC routers, wood and metal tools as well as 3d printers will all be available for peer to peer learning, collaboration, and student/teacher interaction.

Following the dichotomy of the campus the design is a continuation of the brick buildings that are seen around the university.

The fabrication lab is a 2 story structure that has floor to ceiling windows housed inside of a brick weave wall that allows light to penetrate through the voids.

The architectural library is perceived as a linear gateway into the architecture building with pathways from the parking lot and new science building across the street.

The brick weave wall that surrounds the fabrication lab acts as a shell to the workshop while illuminating it with natural light as it penetrates through the voids. Colored center blocks are held together by rebar reinforcement and concrete. This brick weave structure is an art form that fuses this new structure with the surrounding brick buildings.

Architectural Library

THE GEES BEND QUILT MUSEUM This museum will be home to one of the worlds greatest art forms; the Quilts of Gee’s Bend.

These Quilts are created by a group of women who use old scraps to make beautiful works of art. The building will be used not only for showcasing artwork but will also hold meetings, classes and become a workshop. Situation along the river the museum will landmark the site and give a breathtaking view as visitors approach on the ferry.
