editorial notes While everyone else has been finding some time for R&R, Stanfordians are stepping it up a notch to host family, friends and holiday-makers. Our village has been bustling with festivities and events, many lingering into deliciously long summer evenings and some showing off the talents of our local villagers (see our Social Page for pictures, including snaps from Stanford’s musical, The Boy Friend). Our wineries look back over 2012, and our regular columnists take a break from their usual pieces to have a bit of fun at an imaginary dinner party (see page 10). Welcome to Inez Mallandain and Melissie Jolly who join the team in 2013.

The energy and joy of living in Stanford is reflected in the Stanford River Talk, and we can’t wait to see what 2013 brings.

Seasonal celebrations

Nights of success It happened. It really happened. Yes, a staged adaptation of the famous ‘flapper’ musical, first performed in the early fifties in London, was recently presented by the newly established Stanford Players in Stanford. No less than forty talented actors, singers, dancers, stage designers, builders, costume and make-up experts, lighting and sound technicians and a team of support assistants combined to entertain Stanfordians and many others from far and near. It was said that this event was a first for the village, one which saw audiences of two hundred on two nights packed into the NG Church Hall.

The audience experienced many moments of fun-filled triviality and understated humour typical of the Roaring Twenties, and set in the south of France.

Memorable songs such as It’s Never Too Late To Fall In Love and I Could Be Happy With You were sung and danced to with amazing skill and zest, and professional competence.

The audiences on both nights applauded with great fervour and excitement, not because the show admirably lived up to expectations of a village amateur dramatic society, but unerringly, because this was a truly well-above average professional performance.

The Stanford Players, young and not so young, inexperienced or not, will now move forward and hopefully present other stage performances including stage plays, musicals and perhaps special reviews and seasonal productions. Stanfordians and friends from nearby towns are invited to get involved.

Stanford 6’s at the S.C.G Another tournament has come and gone! It feels like an annual family reunion, seeing the same players returning year after year. This year we had the Overberg Agri entering a new team and we are sure they will be around to play in many more tournaments.

The heat this year was exceptional, but thanks go to the Overberg Fire Department for doing a couple of rounds on the field with their water hose – everyone got to cool off a bit! The energy levels of the players did not seem to be hindered by the incessant heat and once again, balls were landing far and wide...

We have new champions this year with the Coolcats from Hermanus beating Schalk Burger’s Ploffies in the final. The Gees trophy for the most spirited team of the day went to the Roughnecks.

Stanford’s Complete Christmas Horse Show

Perfect partnership: Sabok, ridden by Lydia Hardie and owned by Laura Sterley, won Stanford’s Complete Horse Champion at the Christmas Horse Show held on the village green during the holidays. The event was organised by Maureen Wolters.

Young and old: The youngest rider 3-year-old Chloe du Plessis, on 31-year-old TJ Hooker, the oldest pony at the show, is led by her mum, Sam. Chloe won the best dressed prize as the Christmas Fairy on TJ Hooker, the Christmas tree!

Shopping heaven: Locals and visitors braved the rainy day and found wonderful treasures and trinkets at Stanford’s Art and Craft Market held for the first time in the Pam Golding garden.

Music on the lawn A splendid evening was enjoyed by all who attended Animal Welfare’s annual Music on the Lawn at Corgi Park. Helpers cooked up a storm and served dozens and dozens of chicken and boerie rolls, pancakes and cupcakes while Gerry Fourie and Andrew Herriot delighted us with their smooth sounds. The swimming pool was choc-a-block with happy children; the lawns were filled with happy adults.

A couple just passing by was so impressed with the whole vibe, they purchased a boerie roll for their dog!

Our amazing raffle was a hit selling out all 400 tickets on the night. A very special thank you to Villa di Baia, Jeanne Retief Hair Design, Barbara Van Huysteen and everyone who donated prizes for the hampers. This is the MOST successful raffle we have ever had.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the evening – the workers, the music makers, the village people and especially Michael Thompson for the use of his home. All the needy dogs and cats in Stanford will benefit from the funds raised – over R9 000. Baie, baie dankie.

Chilled celebration: We had our annual party on 16 December which was on Kevin’s birthday. The weather was wonderful, the kids had fun and Jerry played lovely, laidback music. The adults braaied or picnicked while lying around on blankets and pillows in the shade.

Ho! Ho! Ho!: Some Stanford children made the most of the public holiday on 16 December, and enjoyed a picnic at the Last Resort, Blue Moon. Father Christmas joined them.

Stanford on fire Stanford received an eerie reminder of last year’s summer fire when palls of smoke rose from the mountains after a lightning storm on Christmas Eve 2012. The fire, fanned by winds, devoured 20 000 hectares of fynbos nature reserve, jumping the road, and threatening houses and the Yacht Club on the banks of the Klein River Estuary. Fire fighters, home owners and volunteers fought to stop the fire from spreading towards Voëlklip, and along the R43, and tried to control the inferno which was an almost impossible task. The thundering path of the fire was halted at Misty Mountains, but continued to smoke and smoulder for days.

At the time of going to press, fire fighters were still monitoring the situation and technicians working to restore communications, electricity and water to Stanford and De Kelders. Both Stanford’s cell phone tower and internet cable were destroyed by the fire. No lives were lost, although some caravans, boats, a cabin and a house were decimated at the Yacht Club. A farmhouse and cottage were burnt on the banks of the estuary.

Tale of bravery

Locals Quentin Green, Aloise Nzonzo and visitor David Gibbs (who rowed across the lagoon from the Wortelgat side to help) saved Irene Ivy’s magnificent house, Lagoon Lodge, from becoming a smouldering ruin. With the help of a helicopter dousing the house (fire fighters were cut off from them) Quentin, Aloise and David spent hours fighting walls of flames licking the homestead. At the end of a terrifying ordeal they had no hose-pipes left (all had melted!) but the house was saved, as was Aloises’.

Saved from the blaze The houses on Sunnydale were saved by the determination of Peter Thomas and Russell Metcalf who, despite the scorching heat and overwhelming smoke, stuck to their guns watering the thatch roof and putting out fires as they started on the main house. The entire Smith, Thomas and Duivestein families are forever indebted to Peter and Russell for placing their lives at risk to save homes, especially that of Aileen Smith.

The house and workshop on Klein Coppull were saved by Graig Neimand (from Stanford Fire) and his two assistants who extinguished the flames of the already blazing timbers. Malcolm Bury assisted Anton and Michael with boarding up windows and removing valuables, and kennelling the household pets whilst the fire was moving across Crystal Kloof. Anton and Tracey cannot express in mere words their gratitude to these four people for saving their home and their workplace.

The fire fighters never gave up, even when it was like being in an erupting volcano as the heat, ash and cinders rained down on them. Michael and Tracey and some other neighbours from Lochinvar and other adjoining farms also offered their help in battling the blaze.

Dave Blackmore cut the bush right in front of the fire using his tractor, in a effort to slow the devastation. Neighbours and their guests joined in the battle.

The Goring family express their sincere appreciation and gratitude to all the fire fighters, and especially to their heroes Graig, his assistants, and Malcolm.

Thank you Stanfordians, and the Eskom staff that worked 48 out of 52 hours to get our power back on in very trying circumstances. You are wonderful.

Christmas Tea at the Cop Shop Local villagers arranged a tea party for Captain Africa and the the rest of Stanford’s police staff on 14 December 2012. Their goal was to thank the police for working tirelessly to decrease crime, and to spoil them with cakes galore! The police were delighted by the gesture. Thank you to Stuart Anderson, Kevin Husk, and Peter and Liz Hochfelden who co-ordinated the tea and cake which was provided by generous women of Stanford.

Overstrand Municipality Awards Most productive municipality

Overstrand Municipality emerged as South Africa’s most productive local municipality in the sixth annual Municipal Productivity Index released last week by Municipal IQ, a specialised local government data and intelligence service.

The top 10 performing municipalities: Overstrand (WC), Stellenbosch (WC), Bitou (WC), Knysna (WC), Merafong City (Gt), Saldanha Bay (WC), Drakenstein (WC), Gamagara (NC), Mossel Bay (WC), Steve Tshwete (Mp)

Overstrand wins the greenest Municipality competition again

Overstrand Municipality was announced as the national winner in the local municipality category of the 2010/11 Greenest Municipality Competition by the Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi, on 20 November 2012. Overstrand also won the inaugural competition last year. The monetary value of this award is R3.5 million.

Raise your glasses The Stanford Wine Route which nestles against the slopes of the mountains and reclines along the banks of the lagoon, draws many folk to the village. Here our wineries look back at 2012 and toast locals and visitors.

STANFORD HILLS We, at Stanford Hills, have had a most eventful 2012! The fires that threatened farms in the area during January were hair-raising to say the least. Shortly afterwards, the unexpected death of our faithful and trusted foreman, Wilfred Arends, was a very sad time for everyone here on the farm. Our staff really rallied together to overcome the loss of his presence, and we thank everyone of them for stepping up to plate. Floods during October, which destroyed some flower fields, completed this trio of disasters.

Having said that, there were plenty of positives! Our exports really took off, as we secured a tender to supply Canada. Our Veldfire Pinotage was released, and our maiden harvest of Shiraz has been maturing in barrels since February, and will soon be ready for release. Our new Tasting Room and picnic deli opened on 14 December, and is open six days a week during season (closed Tuesdays). It has been a great project, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves painting and renovating.

The 2012 vintages of all varietals are looking exceptionally good, and we look forward to a successful 2013.

Ons 2012 oes was uitstekend en die wyne ontwikkel baie mooi. Die Cutters Cove wyn-by-die-glas reeks asook die Pinot Noir is vrygestel en is goed deur ons kliënte ontvang.

Madré en die ‘Kitchen’ kon vir besoekers aan die plaas ‘n interessante kos-ervaring bied met in-seisoen geregte en regte plaas gasvryheid.

Idyllic country life: A menagerie of activities.

2012 has been a great year for Jan Malan and his wife, Madré, and they have a lot for which they are grateful. Jan got back on his bike after 8 months on crutches, the 2012 harvest was exceptional, they have released 2 new wines (Cutters Cove and Pinot Noir), and Madré’s Kitchen gives visitors a warm welcome and exciting food experience.

Stanford wine talk VAALVLEI WINES

The big outdoors: A holistic experience at Vaalvlei.

Vaalvlei Wines, a boutique winery, nine kilometres north-east of Stanford is owned and worked by the Terblanche family. The three-hectare vineyard is planted on koffieklip and sandstone soils and the proximity of Walker Bay is reflected by our handcrafted wines.

We would love to share the fruit of our labour with you in our wine tasting room in the coming year. Wines available for tasting and sale will be Vaalvlei Sauvignon Blanc 2012, Vaalvlei Shiraz 2010 and our very special Vaalvlei Shiraz Reserve 2011, made at our cellar at Vaalvlei.

Our logo is the endangered Western Leopard Toad and is a welcome resident on Vaalvlei. A very interesting permanent audio-visual presentation on the 13 types of frogs of Vaalvlei can be experienced in our tasting room. A unique collection of prehistoric human artifacts is also on display.

As the 2012 season draws to an end we would like to thank you for supporting us.

BRUNIA WINES After yet another challenging year in the wine industry, Brunia is still going! It is no secret that Brunia Wines is on the market, and although negotiations are underway, it is still business as usual. Our tasting room remains fully operational during season (school holidays) and by appointment otherwise.

Apologies to our loyal customers for the no-stock situation from February to April as the 2011 vintage was not ready in time, and we were meeting a huge order from British Airways which we could not turn down!

Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Semillon will form part of our 2013 harvest and we cannot wait to see the results!

RAKA WINES Raka Wines turned 10 during 2012 and celebrated their anniversary with 10 Stars from Platter.

Raka received two 5-Star ratings for two of its top wines: Raka Biography Shiraz 2010 and Raka Cabernet Franc 2009 in the 2013 edition of Platter’s Wine Guide.

Cheese!: Raka winemaker Josef Other accolades received Dreyer and his wife Madelize. during the past year include a handful of Silver medals from Veritas and from Michelangelo, two best wine certificates for Raka Chenin Blanc and Raka Cabernet Sauvignon from Wine of the Month Club, and a Diamond Award from the Winemaker’s Choice Awards for the limited edition Raka Mourvedre 2009 that was recently released for the first time.

The 2012 edition of the Raka Luxus Collection was also released recently. The Luxus is a luxury collection of the popular Raka Quinary along with its 5 components the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, all neatly packed into a sturdy wooden gift box.

Come Dine with Me ‘What’s your favourite movie?’ or ‘What music do you listen to?’ can be rather personal questions, and the answers can give so much away. The subtext of these ‘icebreakers’ is ,’How much do we have in common?’ And so, in the spirit of festive cheer and friendly chit-chat, and to break with the routine of our usual columns, our columnists have laid it out on the table, and chosen their three perfect dinner party guests.

‘I have chosen three special South Africans who have achieved eminence in their respective professions to ‘Come Dine with Me’. Upon my arrival in Lesotho from Ghana in 1975, tasting and imbibing the very best South African wines led me to investigate and learn about oenology. Hence John Platter, the wine guru, will be my first guest as I have regularly referred to his Wine Guide for many years. A dinner par excellence must include carefully chosen unctuous wines. My second guest earned international prominence in African jazz and I am sure I would have been able to persuade her to sing for her supper! Sadly the iconic lady, Miriam Makeba, died in 1988. My third guest was an instant success when selected for the World Cup winning Springbok side in 1995. Chester ‘Black Pearl’ Williams, through his quiet serenity and gentle charm, would add quality to the evening with his many ‘Invictus’ tales; a veritable cocktail of rhythmic music, blended with sporting reminiscences and Reserves to be quaffed. Divine!’

It’s just that I feel somehow that Madiba still presides over us South Africans in a spirit of love, forgiveness, true democratic freedom and exemplary moral fibre). Now, Mr Assad, would you be so kind as to explain to us why it is that you would want to kill your fellow Syrians...” ‘ * This would be my “dream dinner party” as of this moment. I wish all who read this an abundance of peace and love – and enough of what you need at this special time.’ Fred Hatman

‘My first dinner guest would have to be Leon Trotsky, the Marxist revolutionary who was assassinated by Stalin’s henchmen in 1940.

He was a bit of a ladies’ man but was also fascinatingly idealistic and courageous – what virile dinner conversation there would be with him at the table. Next I would invite Helena Bonham Carter – dark, lovely, eloquent and edgey, this quirky British actress is right up my street. And my final choice would be Mark Shapiro of the Zapiro cartoons – my respect for his politics, my enjoyment of his wit and my irrepressible interest in modern South African history make him a fitting choice for high-octane dinnertime chat. Of course, there are long-lost grandmothers whom I would delight in entertaining, but we can only have three, and it is just a game, isn’t it?’ Phil Murray

‘My first guest would undoubtedly be my dear old dad, Jimmy Yeats. Controversial, argumentative, and with a wicked sense of humour, he was certainly good value around any dinner table. I would love to be able to fill him in on all that’s happened in Stanford since the days when we lived here during my childhood, and have a great natter and a laugh about characters past and present.

‘My second dream guest would be Allison Pearson, author of a book called I Don’t Know How She Does It. Literary genius she is not, but her book really helped me at the time I began my struggle to balance life as a working mother. I’d be happier going for a picnic with Indica and Tayana because they are my best friends, which is by far better than a celebrity. ‘Bayethe my fellow South Africans Let me share with you the guests I would like to have for my dining table in this festive season or in year 2013: I would like to have Sibusiso Dlomo the actor on SABC 1 (Generation soapie). He just inspires me by how he uses his power to manage his businesses and home affairs.

He is good at dressing and addressing. Since I’m a Public Relations Practitioner by profession, Frank Chikane, the author for Eight Days in September, the Removal of Thabo Mbeki (2012), may not be left out. This man has his own way to narrate the story without fear and favour, using simple facts. He was the boss in the offices of the President from 1994–2008. What dinner table will be complete without music? Butho Vuthela my favourite national gospel musician must be there! I get so blessed and spiritually inspired by his music. I would like to say BIG UP for them all.’

‘My three dinner friends are the same three I would like to have with me when stranded on a desolate island.

Why? Because before we go down with a glass of bubbly in our hands (that we would have brewed from some berry on the island), we would have made umpteen plans, and constructed (and construed!) many options of staying there forever and living happily ever after without the worries of the outside world.

‘So who are they? Only women – of course! Magda Joubert who, by the time she was married for 15 years, had moved house almost 12 times.

Nothing, but NOTHING fazes her any more … she even started studying fine art at the ripe age of 40 and sold every painting at her 1st solo exhibition!

On top of that she is a non-stop ball of energy with creative, out-of-the-box ideas that will keep us going for many years.

‘Regina Marais-Mrowka (ex-Stanfordian, nogal!) who will keep us towing the line and make sure we don’t do things that damage the environment (and our survival). To crown it all she knows how to swim, fish and clean abalone … so we won’t go hungry.

‘Chanette Paul who will sit back, watch us bemusedly, and now and then throw the cat amongst the pigeons – just to see us all scurrying around, and wonder how she can use all these crazy women characters in her next book.

‘And what would we discuss around the dinner table? Men, of course!

And by six in the morning we will still be chatting… without our men!’

‘Eugene Marais, journalist and pioneer of free verse form in Afrikaans, he was also a brilliant naturalist who made amazing observations of animals in the Waterberg as described in The Soul of the White Ant and My Friends the Baboons.

‘Hosting a dinner party can be stressful during the most festive of occasions. What to cook? How to look? Do I need to do it by the book? But the meeting of minds and merlot at mealtimes is by necessity a time to relax and indulge in the fundamentals.

‘Zach is the most unabashed charmer that I know. He praises my prettiness when my appearance rivals that of Medusa. Claudia compliments my culinary skills by requesting extra helpings of whatever I am able to conjure in the kitchen. Matthew keeps me grounded by letting me know that the food is “awesome” but openly questions the motive for the servings of compliments from the other diners.

‘President Zuma is probably not having dinner with Julius Malema at the moment as his irritating free press might plaster the story across the front pages of our favorite newspapers. He also has five wives to manage. What are his motives for choosing whom he eats with and when they eat?

‘I’ve read that President Obama loves nothing more than a family supper with his wife, Michelle, and his two daughters, Sasha and Malia. However, I suspect most of his dinners are formal fund-raising or networking opportunities and nothing to do with choice and desire.

‘The younger people in my family would probably choose people for completely different reasons. After all, if you are not yet hitched, you might invite particular friends in the hope for an introduction to that fascinating young man or woman you are currently fantasising about. You can’t rely on Facebook for everything!

‘And much more importantly we must remember that most people in the world struggle to have enough food to feed themselves so worrying about who they would like to have dinner with is low down on their list of priorities.

Stanford Columnists ‘Dinner at our house is normally a small and intimate affair, but I think it would be just brilliant to have The Muppets for supper. It would probably be chaos with all of them running around on a mission of their own, but I think I’d laugh so much that food would be something on the side and everyone would break into song constantly.

‘I’m a big fan of Sir David Attenborough and would love to have him as my second dinner guest. I remember being glued to the show The Private Lives of Plants every Sunday when it came on TV. I think I would be able to ask so many questions about his studies and adventures all over the world studying plant and animal kingdoms.

‘The first person I would invite is Stephen Fry – my favourite bright Brit. How can one not invite a man who says, about the story of Moses, Aaron and the golden calf, that ‘the gilt bull beats the guilty bulls**t anyway you choose to look at it.’ Bless his beautiful heart, he would turn up early to help me cook.

He fancies himself as a bit of a chef so between arguing about whether we needed more capers or less tarragon, we would finish a bottle of bubbles.

At that point my second guest, the wonderful Joni Mitchell will arrive. She is such a bright song writer and has been my favorite folk singer from the sixties and it would turn out that Stephen also liked and knew the words to a few folk songs. So Joni would just sit with a glass of bubbles and started singing. At this point Stephen and I would do a little jig round the kitchen when finally the third guest arrives, Robbie Robertson. The most beautiful guitarist of all time, who has a phobic fear of strange roads, got lost and was late. Once he had told the story of his journey and had a large glass of red wine, he would calm down enough to admit that he did bring his guitar, and he and Joni would start to play and sing. I would do what any normal person would do under the circumstances and cry throughout the whole performance! Stephen would notice that a small fire had started in the oven and with much hilarity we would order pizza. Everyone would sit around and tell outrageous stories about their wilder-than-wild youth. What a relief that the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela and Friedrich Nietsche could not make it!’ Melissie Jolly

Gerald Durrell (1925 – 1995) A time capsule buried at the Durrell Wildlife Park on the Channel Island of Jersey bears tribute to this “giant” among naturalists, zookeepers, conservationists, television presenters, and raconteurs! Today Gerald Durrell is best remembered for many books based on his life as an animal collector, including The Bafut Beagles, My Family and other Animals, The Overloaded Ark and Zoo in my Luggage.

‘The capsule reads: We hope that there will be fireflies and glow-worms at night to guide you and butterflies in hedges and forests to greet you. We hope that your dawns will have an orchestra of bird song and that the sound of their wings and the opalescence of their colouring will dazzle you. We hope that there will still be the extraordinary varieties of creatures sharing the land of the planet with you to enchant you and enrich your lives as they have done for us. We hope that you will be grateful for having been born into such a magical world.

‘Imagine the “conversation” were Gerald Durrell and I able to persuade Jane Goodall (chimpanzees), Diane Fossey (gorillas), David Attenborough (birds of Paradise etc) and South African, Lawrence Anthony (elephants etc) to join us at the dinner table.’

Stanford children on stage What a year we had! We were pirates, sultans, explorers, bakers, builders, firemen, princes and princesses, elephants, birds and butterflies. We were dinosaurs, mice and cats, ducks, ants and growing seeds. We were horses and jockeys, racing car drivers, clowns, acrobats, directors, teachers, dragon fighters, doctors, bus drivers, magicians, and we were simply CHILDREN! We practised to speak up, and to listen; to weave stories and to play the roles; we explored different cultures and their tales, and we did lots of creative problem-solving, team-working, and some art too. Yes, we had lots of fun! Thank you to my fantastic team workers!

And of course we will do it again next year.

Those old joints Does your dog no longer jump up to greet you when you get home or does Kitty battle to jump up onto the table to get to her food dish? There may be a good reason – osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic, degenerative joint disease that makes movement painful and difficult and, though more common in older animals, may start at any age. There is no cure for osteoarthritis but, if treated promptly, it may be managed in order to decrease discomfort and increase mobility.

Look out for the following warning signs: • difficulty in rising, walking and climbing stairs • a decrease in overall activity • abnormal or stiff movements or limping • swollen, hot joints • personality changes Treatment of osteoarthritis relies on three important components: • weight control will lighten the load on painful joints • exercise strengthens muscles which in turn will support joints • drugs like anti-inflammatories will relieve pain and joint supplements will increase lubrication of injured joints. NEVER give human medication to your pet without consulting your vet first. Most of these drugs have serious side effects in our pets.

In some pets arthritis will progress very slowly while others might experience rapid changes in mobility and an increase in pain.

Most will, however, find some relieve with proper management and committed care by their owner and veterinarian.
