The 22nd Annual Thomas J. Fogarty, MD Lecture featuring Julio C. Palmaz, MD

Thomas J. Fogarty, MD Dr. Thomas J. Fogarty is an internationally recognized cardiovascular surgeon, inventor, entrepreneur, and vintner. He has been involved with a broad range of innovations in business and technology, and is perhaps the most prolific and productive surgeon innovator of the last 50 years.

Dr. Fogarty has served as founder/co-founder and chairman/board member of more than 33 business and research companies based on medical devices designed and developed by Fogarty Engineering, Inc. Over the past 40 years he has authored 190 patents, including the “industry standard” Fogarty balloon catheter, and the widely-used Aneurx Stent Graft, which replaced open surgical repair of aortic aneurysms.

Dr. Fogarty is the recipient of countless awards and honors, including the Jacobson Innovation Award of the American College of Surgeons and the 2000 Lemelson-MIT prize for Invention and Innovation. He has been inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the National Academy of Engineering. In 2014, he received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation from President Barack Obama in a White House ceremony.

In 2007, Dr. Fogarty co-founded the Fogarty Institute for Innovation on the El Camino Hospital campus with the vision of improving patients’ lives through the application of novel, cost-effective therapies. Now in its 13th year, the Institute is a hotbed for medical technology innovation. Current activities include formal education for entrepreneurs, incubation of early-stage companies, and working with strategic partners to positively influence global healthcare-related policy and regulation.

Dr. Fogarty was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He received his undergraduate education at Xavier University and his medical degree at the University of Cincinnati. He completed his residency at the University of Oregon and served as medical staff president at Stanford Medical Center from 1973-1975.

In 1993, after 13 years directing the Cardiovascular Surgery Program at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, California, he returned to academic life as a professor of surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. He now expands his legacy by training the next generation at the Fogarty Institute.

Julio C. Palmaz, MD Dr. Julio C. Palmaz is the inventor of the first FDA-approved vascular stent. The Palmaz stent is on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington DC. He received his MD in 1971 at the National University of La Plata, Argentina, with radiology specialty training at the University of California, Davis and Martinez VA Medical Center. In 1983, he joined the University of Texas Health Sciences Department of Radiology as chief of angiography and special procedures.

Dr. Palmaz is currently the Ashbel Smith Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and a scientific advisor to Vactronix Scientific. He has 62 issued patents, is the author of over 36 books/book chapters, and has authored 108 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, the American Heart Association, and the Society of Interventional Radiology.

Dr. Palmaz was inducted in the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the National Academy of Inventors. He was selected for the gold medal of the Society of Interventional Radiology and is a Distinguished Scientist and fellow of the American Heart Association. In 2019 he received the Fritz and Dolores H. Russ Prize from the National Academy of Engineering.

Dr. Palmaz also received honorary recognitions from the Argentinian College of Cardiology, The National University of La Plata, The International Society of Endovascular Surgery, the Society of Interventional Radiology, the German Roentgen Society, the San Antonio chapter of the AHA, the Washington Cardiovascular Research Foundation, the Society of Cardiac Angiography, the Texas Heart Institute, the Texas Bar Association, the Surfaces in Biomaterials Foundation, and the Cardiovascular Interventional Radiology Society of Europe.

Fogarty, MD Lecture: Focus on Innovation was established by the Department of Surgery and Byers Center for Biodesign within the Stanford University School of Medicine to provide an annual forum for nationally and internationally known experts to discuss innovation and technology. The Fogarty Lecture also celebrates the historic partnerships among Stanford University, industry, and venture capital that have generated such remarkable progress, and acknowledges the many contributions Dr. Fogarty has made throughout his career.
