Within a few minutes (more likely seconds) of meeting someone, we start to make judgments about their personality, their character, and their values. Your students will identify with their discomfort as they try to learn a new video arcade game while being relentlessly teased and taunted. They have three ways to react; your class will see where each of the three choices takes them. In another vignette they will see Danny deal with the teasing from the kids in his class when he shows up at school wearing his new glasses.

In the third story your kids will learn from Amy how to use the 4-Step Plan to stop the hurtful teasing from her big brother. They will see her successfully set firm limits with him. This vignette once again underscores the

In another vignette, your class will see Jodi use the 4-Step Plan to counter the bullying peer pressure from her friends who want her to ditch school. Upper Elementary & Middle School Disrespect PART 1 In Part 1, Billy faces the disrespect of two classmates who decide to use him for spit wad target practice. After allowing his fantasies of retaliation to run their course, Billy realizes that by losing it (losing control, acting out), he would only be turning a problem he could handle into a problem he couldn’t. Instead, Billy chooses to use BeCool self-talk strategies to maintain his dignity and his cool.

Modeled after actual school shootings, the second vignette illustrates the ultimate form of losing it. Josh and Ryan have been brought to the breaking point by the relentless bullying from two bullies. We see how irrational self-talk

Disrespect PART 2 In Part 1, Charlie almost lets himself be talked into helping some more popular students cheat on their homework. This is the result of his unrealistic appraisal of his own ability to attract friends. His head is filled with irrational and negative self-talk that supports his giving in to the extortion. Then, however, instead of losing it, Charlie uses rational self-talk to gain control of his thoughts. Upon feeling calm and contained and under control of himself, he is able to get a better view of the problem. He gains a new perspective.

In Part 2, after allowing her mind and her thoughts to be unnecessarily influenced by peer pressure, Morganne uses BeCool self-talk strategies to neutralize her friends’ coercion to drink alcohol. In addition to modeling good refusal skills, Morganne models self-talk skills related to self-control and self-respect. 20 minutes

Failure/ Frustration Evan uses BeCool self-talk skills to cope with frustration. Instead of letting his anger and his pessimistic thoughts get the best of him and losing it when life seems to conspire against him, Evan keeps his cool by challenging the irrational and exaggerated thoughts that fill his head. Negative and self-rejecting thoughts often accompany feelings of frustration. In the second part of this module we see Evan overestimate his abilities and skill level and set himself up for failure when he challenges a pool player whose abilities are way over Evan’s head. The way he thinks about failure has a dramatic effect on his subsequent behavior. Students see how irrational

self-talk leads to losing it, while BeCool techniques and realistic self-talk lead to the matter-of-fact acceptance of failure as an integral step toward high levels of achievement. 20 minutes

Rejection In Part 1, Mindy loses it when she allows her own self-talk to interpret rejection by a close friend to be a sign that she is completely unlikable. (This is truly an incredibly common problem with pre-teen girls.) When she uses her BeCool self-talk skills instead, Mindy realizes that although the rejection is painful and it will take some time to get over, it’s not the end of the world. In Part 2, Troy is rejected by peers he thought were his friends. He feels let down and loses it when he allows irrational self-talk to support and arouse his knee-jerk violent response to get even. Using

BeCool self-talk techniques, the rejection is put in perspective, helping to cool his anger AND keeping him from turning a problem he could handle into one that was so big, he couldn’t.

Criticism Criticism is seldom easy to take and often triggers anger and unnecessary conflict. To make matters more difficult, middle school students are so sensitive and can feel criticism when none is intended. In this module your students will learn how to respond to valid as well as invalid criticism in a COOL way. They will see how to clarify unclear criticism to

obtain more information. Students will also learn how to explain their side if the criticism is unfair. In the first vignette they’ll meet Vanessa, an aspiring chef, who has to deal with criticism from her cooking teacher. After modeling both a HOT and COLD response, we see Vanessa asking for clarification, only to find that although disappointing, the criticism from her teacher was valid. Teasing The middle school child takes everything personally.

Not succumbing to teasing from peers is an essential survival skill for this age. In this module your students will see how not to let teasing get to them. Instead of reacting like a victim (COLD) or blowing up (HOT), your students will learn ways to be disarmingly cool. They will see ways to maintain their dignity and self-control even when faced with teasing. In the first lesson Tony’s classmates get on him about forgetting to zip up his pants. Public humiliation is by far every middle school student’s worst nightmare.

Students will watch Tony quickly extinguish the teasing of friends through the use of BeCool techniques. Each vignette in this series portrays realistic situations featuring middle school-age kids. Students will enjoy while they learn! 23 minutes

Using the BeCool 4-Step Plan, your students will learn how to assertively cope with bullying. Whether bullying presents

in the form of verbal abuse, physical abuse or sexual harassment, it is essential that students be prepared with some tools and a plan for coping with this very difficult behavior. Bullying is rampant today. Many schools have a zero tolerance policy regarding sexual harassment and other forms of bullying. Unfortunately, ruling it out doesn’t make it go away. In these three vignettes your students are introduced to three ways to handle bullies. They can be COLD and withdraw, or HOT and blow up, which is almost guaranteed to make matters worse. Students can also practice being COOL, assertive and effective. A variety of COOL responses to bullying are demonstrated, giving students a repertoire of positive and more confident solutions.

In Module 1, your students will learn that there are more effective ways to settle differences than making demands. Simply stated, demanding as a negotiation style translates into “my way or the highway.” It is ineffective and engenders bad feelings. This module guides

students through a process that teaches them how to negotiate disagreements reasonably and fairly. They are introduced to the concept of win-win negotiation and will see how this approach benefits both sides.

Win-win agreements depend on using an external standard of fairness that is convincing to both parties. The goal is bringing both sides together with an agreement that is mutually beneficial. Your students will see Kenny, after trying to get a real steal on the video game his friend is selling, use this fairness principle to negotiate the sale. mutual friend to negotiate an end to a vicious rumor war she is having with Trish. In the second vignette, we’ll see that when two friends are involved in a negotiation one sometimes succumbs to emotional blackmail— not good if you are interested in a long term relationship. Your students will watch Johnny try to use emotional blackmail to avoid paying for a friend’s bike that he lost. Eventually, after trying unsuccessfully to dodge his responsibility for losing the bike, the pair COOLLY negotiates fair compensation. Your students can use these valuable skills throughout their lifetimes.
