The Chapel site, formerly a thickly wooded area known as the Grove, was selected by WM MacDonald. The trees were cleared in 1950 with LW Stewart (Rector 1947–1962), DC Wilson (Chairman of Memorial Committee) and students, including Head Boy EH Poole (1946–1950), striking the first axe blows. The landscape was reconfigured to accommodate the building of the Memorial Chapel. Further landscaping was carried out once the Centennial Chapel was completed in 2016.

Memorial Chapel

After many decades of fundraising and planning, the Memorial Chapel was dedicated on 27 March 1955, fulfilling the dreams of many and realising long held hopes for a place of worship at St Andrew’s College. Built in memory of the 61 Old Collegians and two staff who lost their lives in WWII, the Memorial Chapel played a central role in College life. Over the years the Chapel was enhanced with gifts from many members of the College community. The devastating 2011 earthquake damaged the Memorial Chapel extensively and it was decommissioned on 24 October 2013, after nearly six decades of service. The careful deconstruction of the Memorial Chapel ensured that important original elements were salvaged to be incorporated in the Centennial Chapel.

The College Board of Governors selected the design entered by Patrick Clifford of Architectus in the architectural competition for the second Chapel to built on the site. The clear brief to include salvaged elements from the Memorial Chapel and honour the past, yet provide the College with a modern open place of worship, has resulted in the wonderful building the St Andrew’s College community has proudly taken into its heart. The Centennial Chapel was dedicated on 25 October 2015 by the Right Rev. Andrew Norton, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church. The 750 seat Chapel is used for worship, celebrations, assemblies, presentations and special musical events. The generosity of many St Andrew’s College community members, including the PTA and Old Collegians Association, contributed significantly to the cost of constructing the Centennial Chapel. The Centennial Chapel houses many treasures from the Memorial Chapel placed sympathetically alongside more recent acquisitions, which collectively continue to tell the rich history of the College and its people.

In building this Chapel we demonstrated our belief that education and character development is best achieved in a culture which is inculcated with strong Christian values. The Centennial Chapel now stands as a symbol of those values, honouring those who have gone before us and guiding those who will come after us. The Centennial Chapel foundation stone is inscribed with the whakatauki;
“Te toka tu moana, ara toa rongonui.” “Your strength is like a rock standing in raging waters.” God is our strength and in this place we will worship him and find the courage and grace to honour our guiding values of Truth, Excellence, Faith, Creativity and Inclusivity. These are the values which will continue to support us throughout time.
