40-Day Prayer Journey:
SEEKING THE SPIRIT'S GUIDANCE FOR ST. ANDREW’S
Introduction
This 40-day prayer journey invites our congregation to seek the Holy Spirit's guidance for the future of our ministry. Just as the early church in Acts experienced the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, we too seek renewal, direction, and empowerment. Each day includes a Scripture reading, reflection, and prayer prompt focusing on how the Spirit can empower, enliven, embolden, illuminate, and guide us as we seek to grow younger, impact our community with the Gospel, witness miraculous works, build unity, and increase in love for one another and our neighbors.

WEEK ONE Preparation and Expectation
(ACTS 1)
DAY 1
SCRIPTURE:
ACTS 1:1-5
"In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: 'Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'"
REFLECTION
Just as Jesus instructed the disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit before beginning their ministry, we too must prepare our hearts and wait expectantly for the Spirit's guidance.
PRAYER FOCUS
Ask God to prepare your heart for this 40-day journey. Pray for a spirit of expectancy in our congregation as we seek God's direction.
DAY 2
SCRIPTURE:
ACTS 1:6-8
> “Then they gathered around him and asked him, ‘Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He said to them: ‘It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’”
REFLECTION
The disciples had their own ideas about what Jesus should do, but Jesus redirected them to focus on the power they would receive from the Holy Spirit.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that our church would be empowered by the Holy Spirit to be effective witnesses in our community and beyond.
DAY 3
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 1:9-11
> “After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. ‘Men of Galilee,’ they said, ‘why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.’”
REFLECTION
After Jesus ascended, the disciples needed a reminder not to stand idle but to move forward in faith.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that our church would have both heavenly vision and earthly action, not becoming stuck in comfortable patterns but moving forward in faith.
DAY 4
SCRIPTURE: ACTS
1:12-14
“Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.”
REFLECTION
The early believers devoted themselves to prayer as they awaited the Holy Spirit’s coming. They prayed together despite their differences.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for unity in our congregation across generations, backgrounds, and perspectives as we seek God’s direction together.
DAY 5
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 1:15-20
“In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) and said, ‘Brothers and sisters...’”
REFLECTION
While waiting for the Spirit, the believers addressed practical matters of leadership, showing that spiritual preparation includes practical organization.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for the leadership of our church, that they would be filled with wisdom and the Holy Spirit as they guide our congregation forward.
DAY 6
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 1:21-26
“Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.”
REFLECTION
The apostles sought to fill the leadership gap through prayer and discernment, trusting God to guide their decision.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that God would raise up new leaders in our church, particularly younger leaders who can help us connect with younger generations.
DAY 7
SCRIPTURE: EPHESIANS 6:18
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”
REFLECTION
As we conclude our first week, we’re reminded that prayer in the Spirit should be ongoing and for the benefit of the entire body of Christ.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for a deeper commitment to prayer throughout our congregation and for the Holy Spirit to guide our prayer life.
Week 1 Small Group Discussion Questions:
1. What has God been teaching you about prayer this week?
2. Where do you see our church needing the Holy Spirit’s guidance most urgently?
3. How can we better prepare our hearts to receive what God wants to do among us?
WEEK TWO
The Spirit’s Empowerment
(ACTS 2)
DAY 8
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 2:1-4
“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”
REFLECTION
The Holy Spirit came with visible and audible signs, transforming ordinary believers into powerful witnesses.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit on our congregation, bringing new energy and passion for Christ.
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 2:5-13
“Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken...”
REFLECTION
The miracle of Pentecost broke down language barriers, allowing the gospel to be heard by each person in their own language.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that our church would learn to communicate the gospel in ways that connect with different generations and cultures in our community.
DAY 10
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 2:14-21
“Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd... ‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.’”
REFLECTION
Peter, once fearful, was now boldly proclaiming God’s word. The Spirit’s empowerment changes us from fearful to faithful.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for boldness in sharing our faith, both individually and as a congregation.
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 2:22-36
“Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know...”
REFLECTION
Peter’s sermon focused on Jesus—His life, death, resurrection, and lordship. The Spirit always points to Jesus.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that Jesus would remain at the center of all our church’s ministries and initiatives.
DAY 12
SCRIPTURE:
ACTS 2:37-41
“When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?’ Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’”
REFLECTION
The Holy Spirit convicted hearts, leading to repentance and a response to the gospel.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for the conviction of the Holy Spirit in our worship services, leading people to respond to Christ in faith.
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 2:42-47A
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common...”
REFLECTION
The early church devoted themselves to four practices: teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayer.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that our church would be devoted to these same practices, creating a vibrant community where people can grow in faith.
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 2:47B
“And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”
REFLECTION
The natural result of a Spirit-filled church was numerical growth as people were drawn to the vibrant community.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for numerical growth in our church, especially among younger generations.
Week 2 Small Group Discussion Questions:
1. Where do you see evidence of the Holy Spirit working in our church today?
2. What barriers might be preventing us from experiencing more of the Spirit’s power?
3. How might our church look different if we were more fully empowered by the Holy Spirit?
WEEK THREE Bold Witness and Healing
(ACTS 3-4)
DAY 15
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 3:1-10
“One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful... When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money... Then Peter said, ‘Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.’”
REFLECTION
Peter and John were sensitive to the Spirit’s leading when they encountered the lame man, offering healing in Jesus’ name rather than just money.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for spiritual sensitivity to the needs around us and boldness to offer Christ’s healing power.
DAY 16
SCRIPTURE: ACTS
3:11-16
“While the man held on to Peter and John, all the people were astonished and came running to them... When Peter saw this, he said to them: ‘Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?’”
REFLECTION
Peter immediately redirected attention from himself to Jesus, acknowledging the true source of healing power.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that our church would be known for pointing people to Jesus rather than seeking recognition for ourselves.
SCRIPTURE:
ACTS 3:17-26
“Now, fellow Israelites, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders. But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Messiah would suffer. Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord...”
REFLECTION
Peter used the miraculous healing as an opportunity to call people to repentance and faith in Christ.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that God would help us see and use opportunities to share the gospel in our daily interactions.
DAY 18
SCRIPTURE:
ACTS 4:1-12
“The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people... They seized Peter and John... The next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem... They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: ‘By what power or what name did you do this?’”
REFLECTION
The apostles faced opposition for healing and preaching in Jesus’ name, yet they remained bold.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for courage to stand firm in our faith even when faced with opposition or ridicule.
DAY 19
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 4:13-22
“When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.”
REFLECTION
What made the difference in these ordinary men was that they had spent time with Jesus and were filled with the Holy Spirit.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that our time with Jesus would transform us into bold witnesses, regardless of our education or social standing.
DAY 20
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 4:23-31
“On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God...”
REFLECTION
When faced with opposition, the believers didn’t panic or plan strategy; they prayed together for boldness.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that prayer would be our first response to challenges, and ask for greater boldness in our witness.
DAY 21
SCRIPTURE: MATTHEW 9:37-38
“Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.’”
REFLECTION
Jesus instructs us to pray specifically for more workers to share the gospel.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that God would raise up more people in our congregation to actively share their faith and serve in ministry.
Week 3 Small Group Discussion Questions:
1. Where have you seen God work in miraculous ways in your life or in our church?
2. What opportunities for witness do we have in our community that we might be missing?
3. What would it look like for our church to pray boldly for healing and transformation in our community?
Unity and Generosity
(ACTS 4-5)
DAY 22
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 4:32-35
> “All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them.”
REFLECTION
The early church demonstrated extraordinary unity and generosity, caring for one another’s needs.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for a spirit of unity and generosity in our congregation that transcends age, economic status, and background.
DAY 23
SCRIPTURE:
ACTS 4:36-37
“Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means ‘son of encouragement’), sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.”
REFLECTION
Barnabas exemplified the spirit of generosity and earned his nickname as an encourager.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that our church would be known as an encouraging community where people feel affirmed and supported.
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 5:1-11
> “Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet...”
REFLECTION
The story of Ananias and Sapphira reminds us that God values integrity and truthfulness in our community.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for integrity in our personal lives and in our church community, that we would be transparent and truthful with one another.
DAY 25
SCRIPTURE:
ACTS 5:12-16
“The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade... people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.”
REFLECTION
The early church’s unity and integrity created an environment where God’s power was visibly at work.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for miraculous signs of God’s presence in our church that would draw people to Christ.
DAY 26
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 5:17-26
“Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out...”
REFLECTION
Opposition couldn’t stop God’s work; He miraculously delivered the apostles from prison and directed them to continue preaching.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that God would remove obstacles to our ministry and give us perseverance in the face of challenges.
DAY 27
SCRIPTURE:
ACTS 5:27-32
“’We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,’ he said. ‘Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.’ Peter and the other apostles replied: ‘We must obey God rather than human beings!’”
REFLECTION
The apostles demonstrated courageous obedience to God even when it meant disobeying human authorities.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for courage to follow God’s leading even when it means stepping outside our comfort zones or traditions.
DAY 28
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 5:33-42
“Then he [Gamaliel] addressed the Sanhedrin: ‘Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men... For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.’”
REFLECTION
Gamaliel recognized that if the apostles’ work was truly from God, it couldn’t be stopped.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that God would clearly guide our church so that we can confidently say “this is from God” about our ministry direction.
Week 4 Small Group Discussion Questions:
1. How have you experienced unity (or disunity) in our church community?
2. What might radical generosity look like in our congregation today?
3. Where might God be calling us to “obey Him rather than human beings” in our ministry?
Overcoming Obstacles
(ACTS 6-7)
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 6:1-7
“In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food...”
REFLECTION
The early church faced internal conflict and responded by creating new structures and appointing new leaders to address the needs.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for wisdom in developing ministry structures that effectively serve all members of our congregation.
DAY 30
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 6:8-15
“Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed great wonders and signs among the people. Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen... They produced false witnesses, who testified, ‘This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law.’”
REFLECTION
Stephen’s powerful ministry led to opposition and false accusations. Kingdom impact often provokes resistance.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for discernment to recognize spiritual opposition and distinguish it from prudent decisions. Pray for our strength to stand firm in the face of it.
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 7:1-53
“Then the high priest asked Stephen, ‘Are these charges true?’ To this he replied: ‘Brothers and fathers, listen to me!’” (followed by Stephen’s speech recounting Israel’s history)
REFLECTION
When on trial, Stephen boldly proclaimed God’s faithfulness throughout history and confronted religious hypocrisy.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for a deep understanding of God’s faithfulness in our church’s history so that we have boldness to follow where He leads in the future.
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 7:54-60
“When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God... While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ Then he fell on his knees and cried out, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them.’”
REFLECTION
Even in his death, Stephen demonstrated Christlike love and forgiveness toward his persecutors.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for a spirit of forgiveness within our church over past disagreements, wounds and divisions. Pray for the ability to love those who oppose or misunderstand us on the outside of our church as well.
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 8:1-3
“On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria... But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison.”
REFLECTION
Persecution scattered the believers, yet this would ultimately spread the gospel further. God uses even opposition to accomplish His purposes.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that our church would trust God’s sovereign purposes even in difficult circumstances.
SCRIPTURE: ROMANS 8:28
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
REFLECTION
God can work all circumstances—even painful ones—for good in the lives of those who love Him.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for faith to trust God’s good purposes even when we face obstacles or don’t understand His ways.
DAY 35
SCRIPTURE: 2 CORINTHIANS
4:16-18
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
REFLECTION
Paul reminds us to maintain an eternal perspective during difficult times, focusing on unseen spiritual realities.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for an eternal perspective in our congregation, seeing beyond immediate challenges to God’s greater purposes.
Week 5 Small Group Discussion Questions:
1. What obstacles is our church currently facing in its ministry?
2. How might God be using these challenges to refine or redirect us?
3. Where have you seen God work something difficult for good in your life or in our church?
Expanding Vision
(ACTS 8)
DAY 36
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 8:4-8
“Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said... So there was great joy in that city.”
REFLECTION
Philip took the gospel to Samaria—a place Jews typically avoided— and saw great responsiveness.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that our church would cross cultural and social barriers to share Christ’s love with all parts of our community.
DAY 37
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 8:9-25
“Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria... When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money and said, ‘Give me also this ability...’”
REFLECTION
Simon’s desire to buy spiritual power reveals how we can sometimes approach ministry with worldly mindsets.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for pure motives in our service and ministry, seeking God’s glory rather than personal gain or recognition.
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 8:26-31
“Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, ‘Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.’... Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ Philip asked. ‘How can I,’ he said, ‘unless someone explains it to me?’ So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.”
REFLECTION
Philip was obedient to God’s unexpected direction, leading to an opportunity to share the gospel with the Ethiopian official.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s guidance, even when it leads us in unexpected directions.
DAY 39
SCRIPTURE: ACTS 8:32-40
“The eunuch asked Philip, ‘Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?’ Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus... When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.”
REFLECTION
The Ethiopian eunuch immediately responded to the gospel with faith and baptism, then returned to his country with the good news.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray that our witness would lead to joyful response and that new believers would eagerly share their faith with others.
DAY 40
SCRIPTURE: ISAIAH 43:19
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
REFLECTION
As we conclude our 40-day journey, we remember that God is always doing new things among His people. Our task is to perceive what He is doing and join Him.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for discernment to recognize where God is working and courage to follow His leading into new areas of ministry.
Week 6 Small Group Discussion Questions:
1. What new directions might God be leading our church?
2. What unexpected opportunities for ministry have emerged during this prayer journey?
3. How has your vision for our church’s future expanded through these 40 days of prayer?

Conclusion
As we conclude this 40-day prayer journey, we’ll gather in a worship night with prayer for healing, forgiveness and unity and for our future. We hope to share what God has revealed and to commit ourselves to following His leading. The early church in Acts demonstrates that when believers earnestly seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance and power, God works in extraordinary ways.
CONSIDER THESE QUESTIONS AS A CONGREGATION:
1. What recurring themes or directions has God highlighted during this time?
2. What specific next steps is God calling us to take?
3. How can we maintain this spirit of prayer-driven ministry moving forward?
Remember that the book of Acts is not just a historical account but a continuing story—one that God wants to write through our church as well. May we, St. Andrew’s, like those first believers, be known as people who depend on the Holy Spirit, who pray with expectancy, who love one another deeply, and who boldly proclaim the gospel in word and deed.
“BUT YOU WILL RECEIVE POWER WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT COMES ON YOU; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
