Our Ministries Worship and Music Altar Guild

Age Range: Adult Days/Times: One weekend per month for one service Description: Sunday mornings set-up the sanctuary for Holy Communion and Holy Baptism, along with other important tasks, helps the congregation worship God in meaningful ways.

Age Range: Youth–adult Days/Times: Sign up to serve when available Description: Assist the pastors with distribution of the wine and bread for communion on the first and third Sundays mornings of the month. Training is available.

Age Range: All ages Days/Times: Once every 4–6 weeks; 20 Minutes Description: To help create a welcoming environment at St. Andrew.

Greet people, extend a hand, share a smile, help introduce people to others, and assist newcomers.

Ushers

Age Range: Youth–adult Days/Times: Usher teams serve once a month every 3–4 months depending on the service hour and needs Description: To greet and assist those entering the sanctuary for worship with a warm smile and welcoming presence. Duties include distribution of bulletins, assisting with collecting the offering, directing the congregation for communion, and assisting those with special needs.

Starlite Singers

Age Range: 3-year-olds–kindergarten Days/Times: Wednesdays from 6:00–6:30 PM, September–May Description: Starlite Singers welcomes the youngest children with a variety of activities. Children sing, dance, make music, and learn of Jesus’ love for them. Participate in worship approximately once per month, as well as additional Wiggle & Worship services. Parents are always invited to attend, and nursery care is available for younger siblings. Fall rehearsals will be held outdoors (weather permitting) until children are fully vaccinated and can safely sing together indoors without masks.

Sonshine Singers

Age Range: 1st–5th Grade Days/Times: Wednesdays from 6:00–6:30 PM Description: Sonshine Singers is an exciting and energetic children’s choir. Singers learn age-appropriate choral singing basics in a nurturing and fun environment. Members learn to read choral music and healthy singing habits. The choir sings during worship approximately once a month. Fall rehearsals will be held outdoors (weather permitting) until children are fully vaccinated and can safely sing together indoors without masks.

Spirit Singers

Age Range: 6th–9th Grade Days/Times: Wednesdays from 6:15–6:50 PM, September–May Description: The Spirit Singers sing approximately once a month in worship and for special services like Thanksgiving Eve and Christmas Eve. They sing anthems and descants for congregational hymns. Occasionally, they combine with the Canticle Choir, Sonshine Singers, and Starlite Singers. A variety of instruments accompany the Spirit Singers.

Canticle Choir

Age Range: Adults Days/Times: Wednesdays from 7:30–8:45 PM Description: The Canticle Choir singers lead the congregation at three 9:00 AM Sunday services a month and occasionally at the 10:30 AM service by singing the liturgy, special hymn arrangements, anthems, calls to worship, and the occasional major choral/orchestral compositions.

Festival Choir

Age Range: High School–Adult Days/Times: Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings Description: Festival Choir is an opportunity for singers (high school– adult) to join the Canticle Choir to sing for special services: Christmas Eve, Easter, and Pentecost. The commitment is short term requiring 2–3 rehearsals ending with a Sunday morning performance.

Ring of Fire

Age Range: 4th–7th Grade Days/Times: Wednesdays from 5:40–6:25 PM, September–May Description: Ring of Fire is a great opportunity for both instrumentalists and singers to learn and play handbells. This lively group has an amazing and contagious sense of camaraderie! The handbell ensemble rings during worship about once a month. No experience is necessary!

St. Andrew Lutheran Church Peace bRingers

Age Range: 8th–12th Grade Days/Times: Wednesdays from 4:45–5:30 PM, September–May Description: Peace bRingers provides a bell choir experience for high school students and is a wonderful opportunity for fun, fellowship, and service! The handbell ensemble rings during worship about once a month. No experience is necessary!

Bells of Joy

Age Range: High school–adult Days/Times: Wednesdays from 6:30–7:25 PM Description: This 5-octave handbell choir for adults meets once a week to rehearse and plays in worship about once a month. Being part of Bells of Joy is a small group opportunity for those who enjoy praising God through music. Ringing experience is helpful but not necessary, everyone is welcome!

Grace Notes (Intro to Handbells)

Age Range: Adult Days/Times: Wednesdays from 7:30–8:15 PM Description: St. Andrew member Vicki Grant will be leading Intro to Handbells this fall for beginning handbell ringers. This 10 week class is for adults and will cover all the basics and techniques of handbell ringing. They will meet from October 8–December 15. No experience with handbells is required but attendees should be able to read music.

Summer Musical Drama Camp

Age Range: 5th–12th Grade Days/Times: 1 week in the summer and 8 spring rehearsals Description: Students with a flair for the dramatic, a love of music, or a curiosity about how theatre works behind the scenes come together for a week in the summer to produce a musical. Auditions are in the spring, and everyone makes it! Past productions include: Beauty and the Beast, Pirates of Penzance, Godspell, Fiddler on the Roof, Aladdin, Annie.

Early Learning Childcare

Age Range: 6 weeks–5-year-olds Days/Times: Center hours are 7:00 AM–5:30 PM, Monday–Friday Description: This year-round ministry is a full-day, nationally accredited program, and have also earned a 4 Star Rating through Minnesota Parent Aware. Our goal is to provide balance between flexibility and structure. We help to build a sense of independence and responsibility while including positive methods of guidance and provide each child with age-appropriate learning experiences throughout the day. As your child grows within our program we strive to provide them with a solid foundation of faith development and Kindergarten readiness to set them up for success!

Preschool

Age Range: 33 months–5-year-olds Days/Times: We have 2, 3, and 4 days a week classes that are 3 hours. Our preschool programs run from September–May. We also offer extended day afternoon enrichment classes, lunch bunch, and summer camps throughout the summer.

Description: We are a NAEYC Accredited Preschool, and have earned a 4 Star Rating through Minnesota Parent Aware. We encourage the development of each child’s understanding of God, while providing social interaction and enrichment. The teaching of faith is integrated in all developmental areas—physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual—with the goal of ensuring that children are prepared for the next step of Kindergarten.

Afternoon Enrichment Classes

Age Range: 3–5-year-olds Days/Times: Dates and times of these classes vary. For the most current information, check out our website at standrewearlylearning.org Description: In tandem with or separate from our preschool programs, these enrichment classes provide a wide variety of experiences to nurture each child’s self-esteem as a wonderfully created child of God. Themes focus around topics such as Spanish, Tiny Chefs, Preschool Book Club, and Science Explorers. Lunch Bunch, and a curb side drop-off/pick-up option is also available.

School Year Children’s Ministries: Sunday School - The Great Stories of Jesus

Age Range: Pre-K–5th Grade Days/Times: Sunday mornings at both worship services, 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM Description: Sunday School meets every week during both Sunday morning worship hours. All are welcome to make new friends, learn about Jesus, and have fun together! This year we will dive into the great stories of Jesus. Register online.

Bible and Boogie

Age Range: Pre-K–2nd Grade Days/Times: Wednesdays from 5:30–6:00 PM, September–May Description: Bible and Boogie is a children’s group designed for Pre-K, 1st, and 2nd graders. Children will have fun while digging into a Bible story and praying together from 5:30–5:45. Then move into the gym where they will boogie and play games from 5:45–6:00.

Children should bring Bibles, curiosity, questions, and friends! We will start in the gym at 5:30–5:45 to play games. Then move to a different room to blast into the Bible and pray from 5:45–6:00.

Our Middle Schoolers are always cooking up something fun and crazy! We get together throughout the year to have some fun, and build friendships based in faith.

Middle School Mission Trip

Age Range: 6th–8th Grade Days/Times: TBD Description: Get ready to serve God and grow deeper in your faith with old and new friends. Missions trips on the summer time take us to new places together, create opportunities to learn about other circumstances outside our normal experiences, and participate in what God is doing in those places.

High School Ministry Wednesday Night Youth Group (WNYG)

Age Range: 9th–12th Grade Days/Times: Wednesday 7:00–8:30 PM Description: Connect with other high school students from around the southwest metro at Wednesday Night Youth Group and monthly special events! On Wednesday nights, students will connect with God while connecting with one another through inspiring Bible studies, rewarding service projects, and ridiculously fun fellowship nights.

ELCA Youth Gathering

Age Range: 8th–12th Grade Days/Times: July 24–28, 2022 Description: Join 30,000 others ELCA youth as we take over downtown Minneapolis! This is an event you will not want to miss with life changing service projects, thrilling games, and some of the best speakers the ELCA has to offer. This is one of the most impactful spiritual events a youth can have, so don’t miss out on your opportunity.

Camping Ministry Spirit in the Pines Camp

Age Range: 2nd–9th Grade youth campers, 10th Grade–college age counselors, adults, and families Days/Times: All year Description: “SIP” is owned and operated by St. Andrew. It is located about an hour north of Brainerd, MN on beautiful Pleasant Lake. The camp is an outreach ministry serving St. Andrew members as well as others from mostly the southwest metro. Summertime at Spirit in the Pines Camp is filled with age specific youth camp sessions during the week and Family Camp sessions during the weekends. Youth and adult retreats are held during the fall and winter months.

Our Ministries Spirit in the Pines Camp Staff—Paid Positions

Age Range: College Age/Young Adult Days/Times: Late May–Mid-August Description: The Camp Staff plans, implements and runs nearly every aspect of the summer camp program. As a paid staff member, you will live at camp and be a part of a hardworking and loving community. Camp staff members will share God’s love through Christ in servanthood to the campers, counselors and families. You will build memories and friendships that will last your lifetime! Applications will be available on the camp website by November 1.

Learning & Small Groups Parenting Forums

Age Range: Parents and grandparents Days/Times: TBD Description: During the past 18 months, our children and youth have experienced the dramatic circumstances of the pandemic. Influences of this extended and emotional disruption has resulted in changes to behavior and confidence. Join other caring and faithful parents for presentations this fall that will help us understand the impact of the pandemic on our youngest generations and hear relevant strategies as we engage them in new, meaningful, and faithful ways.

Church Anew Church Anew provides ongoing learning events, blog content, and resources to ignite faithful imagination and sustain inspired innovation. Through nationally recognized keynote speakers, thoughtful conversation with colleagues old and new, and practical workshops, our conferences prepare teams for the challenges of day-to-day ministry and leadership. St. Andrew members are invited to participate in all Church Anew conferences.

Church Anew (Resource): Old & New

Days/Times: Various Description: A ministry of St. Andrew, Church Anew has developed a Bible Study resource for individual and small group use. As a ministry of our congregation, this resource is available, free of charge for any to use in their personal study or small group conversation. The first installment studies the book of Genesis in seven sessions featuring presentations by local preachers including Meta Herrick Carlson, Joe Davis, Tyler Sit, Jenny Sung, and David Rojas Martinez.

Bible Studies: Early Risers Bible Study

Age Range: Mixed adults Days/Times: Weekly on Wednesday mornings, 8:00–9:00 AM Description: Come for a lively discussion as we dive into the Word of God using books written by a variety of authors. On August 4 we begin a study on the book of Exodus. This is a 10-week study and you can join at any time.

Pastor’s Thursday AM Bible Study

Age Range: Mixed adults Days/Times: Weekly, Thursday mornings from 9:00–10:00 AM beginning September 9, 2021 Description: A Bible study led by the pastors to foster community, spiritual growth, and prayer support. This fall, we will be reading and discussing New York Times Best-selling author, Anne Lamott’s newest book, Dusk, Night, Dawn: On Revival and Courage. From the book cover: “Full of honesty, humor, and humanity that have made Lamott beloved by millions of readers, this book is classic Anne Lamott—thoughtful and comic, warm and wise—and further proof that Lamott truly speaks to the better angels in all of us.” Join us even if you have not yet participated. Sewing the Word

Age Range: Adult women Days/Times: Wednesdays from September–May, 9 AM–12:00 PM Description: Would you like to learn how to quilt or how to help out with the quilt group? We can use help with cutting, pinning, pressing, or sewing. We are happy to teach you. Our quilts have gone to an orphanage in Honduras, Haiti, Florida, Texas, battered women’s shelters, police departments, Children’s Hospital, St. Joseph Home, PROP, and many other places.

Men’s Groups: Saturday Morning Men’s Bible Study

Age Range: Adult men 40+ Days/Times: 8:00–9:30 AM each Saturday in the Conference Room, new members welcome Description: The Saturday mornings men’s group is a light hearted bunch from several churches in the South West Metro that enjoys Christian fellowship and learning. We have a particular liking to Andy Stanley and other contemporary Christian preachers. We use videos and Bible studies as conversation starters on living a Christian man’s life in today’s world. Join us anytime you don’t need to wait until we start a new series. All Mature (from 40 to 104+) Christian Men (St. Andrew membership not required) welcome. Come as you are often as you can.

Age Range: Mixed men Days/Times: Wednesdays, 6:30–7:30 AM beginning in September Description: Join fellow Christian men each week to examine how faith affects our daily life and relationships. This group is involved in service projects both locally and farther away. Participate weekly, when you can, or when a service project that is announced interests you.

Saturday Morning Dad’s Group

Age Range: 25-70-something-aged dads Days/Times: The 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, 7:30–9:00 AM. Description: With so many places to go and things to do, it’s often hard to take time for yourself. We want to gather men together to share experiences and wisdom about being a good dad, to provide men with networking and relationship-building opportunities, and to give one another a source of support, laughter, and lots of shared discussion!

Men Who Love Old Cars Group

Be Still and Know…Beginning Yoga & Devotion

Age Range: Mixed adults Days/Times: Thursdays at 11:00 AM beginning Thursday, Sept. 23; 4th Thursdays of the month at 6:00 PM (Virtual only) Description: Open to adult men and women. Each session opens with scripture and closes with a devotion and prayer. No previous yoga experience necessary. Participants wear yoga type stretchy pants with a semi-fitted top that allows for movement, and bring a yoga mat or beach towel. Classes are taught by an experienced certified yoga instructor. You are welcome to come once, twice, or any time that works in your schedule. There is no charge for participation.

Bread Baking 101

Age Range: Anyone with a curiosity for bread baking Days/Times: Saturdays beginning at 9:00 AM to approximately 12:30 PM over Zoom. Begins Saturday, September 18 Description: There is nothing like fresh baked bread. And it is even better shared with others. Join Pastor Peter Johnson and Pat Day (multiple ribbon winner at the Minnesota State Fair and experienced bread baking teacher) for three Saturday morning sessions this fall that will teach you all the essentials of a variety of breads—basic whole wheat, sweet and holiday breads, etc. Each session is over Zoom so that each participant can bake bread in their own kitchens.

St. Andrew Lutheran Church Family-to-Family: NAMI Support Group

Age Range: Adults Days/Times: Thursday, September 16 and continues for eight consecutive Thursdays from 6:30–9:00 PM Description: Does your love one live with a Mental Illness? Leaning to cope with a family member with illness is a difficult and prolonged challenge for all families. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is an national organization whose programs and curriculums have assisted families with informative care and compassion for many years. In a sessions facilitated by trained and experienced NAMI counselors, including St. Andrew member Carol Webster, learn about mental illness, the brain, treatment, and resources to help a loved one living with a mental illness. Attendees will also build communication skills, reduce stress, find support, and discover the common Stages of Emotional Responses when supporting someone with a mental illness.

Suicide Bereavement Support Group

Age Range: 18 or older Days/Times: 1st Tues & 3rd Thurs of each month, 7:00–9:00 PM Description: This support group aims to provide a safe, accepting and non-judgmental place for people struggling with the challenge of suicide loss. Leadership of this support group have experienced personal loss of their own and have received specialized training.

Age Range: All Description: The beginning of the process of recognizing the needs of others in the world is to listen with an open and respectful mind and heart and then engage in thoughtful dialogue toward mutual understanding. St. Andrew commits itself to arranging opportunities to learn, grow and dialogue. Topics are not just race in America. Other areas to be explored are topics like the stigma of mental illness for individuals and families, human sexuality and the LGBTQ+ community, and ageism.

Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI)

Age Range: Adult and teenagers Description: St. Andrew began the process of using the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) last fall with an inaugural class of 80 participants. The instructional tool taken by 100,000s of worldwide helps individuals and organizations assess their ability to relate to, understand, and embrace differences (cultures and people) in our society.

Pastor Peter Johnson and St. Andrew member Tova Werlinger have become certified as Qualified Administrators of the IDI. Individuals and groups at St. Andrew are invited to participate in this IDI process this fall.

Forest Hills Elementary School (EP) Partnership Age Range: All ages Days/Times: Varies Description: St. Andrew’s church partnership with Forest Hills Elementary School in EP continues for its second year. During August, support a child by providing them with a backpack and school supplies distributed by the school social worker. Other projects of support and teacher appreciation are part of the partnership as we give our support to educators and students alike.

PROP Food Drive

Focusing on empowerment, sustainability, inclusiveness, vulnerability and mutuality, this mission has brought about nearly 30 mission trips. Many trips are geared toward families, creating a shared experience of retreat, experience in the global mission context, and service learning. We hope to resume mission trip travel again in 2022.

Meals on Wheels

Age Range: Adults Days/Times: Lunch time (10:35 AM–12:00 PM) every month, volunteer for the day(s) that works for you during our week to drive Description: Deliver meals via car route to people living in Eden Prairie who have requested them through local operated Meals on Wheels. This ministry has been a lifesaver during the pandemic as it addressed the needs of the vulnerable. The ministry continues to be a strong impact.

Messiah Food Baskets

Holiday Giving

Age Range: All ages Days/Times: November and December Description: Each year, St. Andrew chooses several local ministries to support the community through Holiday Giving.

Gifting others through these programs has stimulated generosity and service all over the metro area. Prior partners have included PROP’s $30 gift cards for clients, Cornerstone’s Holiday Store supporting families dealing with abuse, packing gift baskets supporting people dealing with cancer treatments (Baskets from JoJo), or the Zion Baptist Church Learning Pod helping neighborhood youth with school support during the pandemic.

Habitat for Humanity

Age Range: 17 years old–adult Days/Times: Summers Description: Work side by side with fellow St. Andrew members constructing a Habitat for Humanity home. Light construction work is expected and training is provided. Habitat projects are great team building experiences and provide deep levels of fulfilment. Volunteers needed for full days, not partial days. Sign-ups will be available in late spring.

Description: At a person’s death, the church shares the grief of those who mourn, and remembers the brevity of life on earth. The St. Andrew staff will help you make arrangements and bring comfort to you.

Funeral Reception Committee

Age Range: Adults & Teens Days/Times: When there is a funeral at St. Andrew, you will be emailed and invited to donate food and/or to help set up, serve or clean up the reception. Usually during day time hours. May be weekdays or weekends. Frequency varies. Help when you are available.

Description: We have two teams. One team donates food for funeral receptions. The second team sets up the dining room, serves, and cleans up following a funeral reception. We invite you to join one or both teams.

Note: The Funeral Reception Committee closely follows St. Andrew’s pandemic protocols and therefore demonstrates case-by-case flexibility in providing for the needs of families.

Manna Meals

Age Range: Teenager–adult Days/Times: Flexible Description: Manna Meals are meals prepared by St. Andrew volunteers. These meals are prepared and delivered by our volunteers to members and friends of St. Andrew on a ‘as needed’ basis. (People recovering from illness, surgery, death of a loved one, birth of a baby, or simply recuperating at home from poor health may receive Manna Meals). Worship Quiet Bags Youth Team

Age Range: 5th–12th Grade and adult leaders Days/Times: Flexible, refresh Quiet Bags once or twice a month Description: To prepare and refresh the worship quiet bags for young children (6 months–5 years old). Bags are offered to families to use for these young children during the worship services. Periodically, we meet to make new items for the bags.

Safety Team

Age Range: Adults Day/Times: Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings Description: This team is working to develop and implement safety procedures here at St. Andrew and especially for Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. These procedures cover everything from weather related incidents to health-related events. They also cover evacuation procedures as well as how to respond to an active shooter. This team is also responsible for developing and providing training to our safety volunteers.

Property & Administration Support Men’s Fix-it Team

Description: Provide a welcoming space for users of our building by joining a small group of people for fellowship, coffee and small scale building maintenance projects. Projects include repairing toys in our Childcare or Preschool rooms, assembling small pieces of furniture or equipment.

Indoor/Outdoor Maintenance Team

Age Range: Adults Days/Times: Prime time for these projects is in the spring and fall, but there are always on-going projects available. Let us know you are interested and we will get you on our contact list for our next project.

Description: Assists Building and Property Staff in completing various maintenance projects both indoors and outdoors. These projects include such things as painting classrooms, striping our parking lot, and landscape clean-up and work.

Church Committees Benevolence Fund Committee

Description: The Benevolence Committee is an appointed team of leaders responsible for overseeing St. Andrew’s Benevolence Fund.

Funded by congregational offering, the Benevolence Fund supports extraordinary missions either inside or outside the church. Applicants showing Christian service and growth in financial giving are encouraged. Generally, the Benevolence Fund supports projects and partnerships that are on-going in nature.

Mission Endowment Fund Committee

Description: The Endowment Committee is an appointed team of leaders responsible for overseeing the St. Andrew Endowment Fund.

Created by proceeds from the sale of St. Andrew’s West campus, contributions to the fund may be made by members and friends of St. Andrew to support the broader mission of the church. The Endowment Fund supports new and unique ministry initiatives within the church, local community, and synod, as well as global initiatives.

Generally, grants are provided for one-time or start-up funding, not ongoing partnerships and operations.
