Giving Report: Enabling Access to Andrew’s

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR GENEROUS SUPPORT IN 2020 FOR PHILANTHROPY, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, OUR STUDENTS.

Despite the multitude of challenges that we have faced this past year as a College community and as members of the wider Australian and International community, it has been inspiring to see a spirit of philanthropy or ‘giving back’ continue to thrive. In 2020, the College and St Andrew’s College Foundation received $631,344 in new gifts and pledges from 95 benefactors in support of our students via scholarships, capital works and the general fund.

We first called upon our community earlier in the year for their help to respond to the impact of the pandemic for the SAC COVID-19 Relief Fund. Later, in December, we turned our focus to increasing our means-tested scholarship funds, in order to secure the future for rural and regional, Indigenous and government school students. In total we raised $90,524 for these causes and were able to help all 26 students who applied for emergency financial relief.

We have also been working with a number of alumni, parents and friends of the College to increase our scholarship funds and in 2020, we were delighted to establish six new named scholarships, all of which are means-tested.

These include The Adam Casselden SC Scholarship, established by Adam Casselden SC (Fr 1990), and The Blair Scholarship, established by Craig Blair (Fr 1987), which will both assist Government School students from rural and regional areas to take the steps to come to College.

Additionally, Andrew and Lian Wines (Fr 1988, SS 1991), established The Wines Family Medical Scholarship that will provide support to a deserving student studying medicine or pre-medicine for the next three years.

We were also delighted that there were two new scholarships established in support of our female students. The Nancy Reardon-Fonseca Scholarship, established by friends of the College, Adrian Fonseca and Nancy Reardon-Fonseca, will support a female undergraduate student from New South Wales to attend College. The Amanda Mostyn Women in STEM Scholarship will also support a female undergraduate student, studying in the area of STEM and for whom without the financial support of the scholarship, would otherwise be unable to attend college and university.

The sixth named scholarship is the David Anstice (Fr 1966) Rural & Regional Annual Scholarship, which will provide a significant scholarship to an all-rounder from rural and regional Australia with capacity to make contributions to the community post-university. David Anstice is a longtime supporter of the College and has also set our community a challenge – if we can match his scholarship with three new similar-size scholarships, he has promised to double his own scholarship gift! We look forward to meeting this challenge and encourage anyone who is interested in finding out more to get in touch.

Support for the new building has also continued and The Sukkar Family/ Jordan Sukkar (Fr 2009) Andrew Murray (Fr 1961, SS 1966), Laura & Russell McKinnon (Former Council member) and Mark Burrows (Fr 1962) all dug deep to help fund new bedrooms in the Thyne Reid Link Building. Many parents also made voluntary building fund

donations throughout the year, allowing us to continue with ongoing building maintenance across the campus.

We also know that philanthropy comes in all shapes and sizes and our community are also generous with their time. We thank all of the alumni, parents and friends of the College who have volunteered their time on committees or taken part in the various Professional Development Programs for this year. It would not be possible to run the range of events, activities and programs without your support and participation - thank you.

We would also like to thank the Council, the Foundation Board of Management, the 1867 Circle Committee, the Alumni Society Committee, the Young Alumni Committee and our fresher reunion year volunteers for their continued valuable advice and support throughout 2020.

A SNAPSHOT OF 2020:

Scholarships and bursaries continued to be a key focus, with the College receiving $390,566 in combined gifts towards scholarships this year. A further $312,680 was also pledged for future scholarship funds.

In support of the new Thyne Reid Link Building Development, we received $271,575 in gifts and a further $95,000 in pledges towards Capital Works Projects.

A further $8,375 was gifted towards the College’s General Fund to be used as needed across all of these projects.
