The King of Australian Coins: the 1930 Australian Penny In 1930 the Melbourne Mint had in its possession matrices for the obverse of the Australian penny from both the Royal Mint in London and the Calcutta (India) branch. The two differ. Among other things, the relative positions of the letters in the ‘OMN: REX F.D. IND: IMP:’ in the legend vary as do the number of beads about the rim: 178 on the Indian die and 177 on the London. For years no one could offer any explanation as to why two different
working dies were prepared to produce just a few specimens. A review of the Melbourne Mint records in 1987 clarified the circumstances under which the 1930 penny was struck. Most of 1930 pennies found over the years have had considerable circulation, and are classified in a lower grade between Very Good and Good Fine. Dear Collectors Welcome to our Impressions catalogue for 2016. Included is a range of products that align with themes of the year’s Stamp Issue Program. The range will interest limited-edition collectors and those looking for unique variations to add to their overall collection. Most of the featured combinations are not available elsewhere.

The 50th anniversary of the introduction of decimal currency to Australia was an important time for Australians in one way or another, and a wonderful presentation is included on page seven. We continue a program of recognition for those involved in the Great War with a third collection in the series titled 1916: The Western Front. This series is a significant addition to any philatelic or military collection with the included stories, photographs, military
references and unique Australian philatelic material – a valuable reference for years to come. The introduction of the online limited-edition registration process last year was a huge success for collectors, and we continue its use again this year. I would like to thank all those who provided valuable feedback about their participation experience.
