Before we look at the stamp issues featured in this edition I would like to draw attention to a major new initiative we introduced in January: the first charity stamp from Australia Post. The sheetlet of 10 x 60c stamps was officially launched on 27 January by Anna Bligh, the Premier of Queensland and Ahmed Fahour, MD and CEO of Australia Post to assist in raising funds for the flood victims of Queensland as they face the mammoth task of rebuilding. I know you all join me in wishing those affected by the floods and other weather events across the country the very best. The sheetlet includes a receipt for a donation of $2 included in the purchase price. The five designs in the sheetlet remind us of the tremendous Australian spirit and the desire to “lend a hand”, as well as the extremes that Mother Nature is capable of producing. Our first stamp issue in this edition is Australian Legends 2011 released in January. The Legends for this year are four eminent Australian women who are renowned for advancing gender equality. This announcement coincides with the Centenary of International Women’s Day to be celebrated on Tuesday 8 March this year. We are honoured to have these most worthy recipients of the Australia Post

Australian Legends Award featured on these elegant stamps. For collectors of flora-themed stamps we are releasing two very colourful stamp issues in March. The first is a se-tenant set of five stamps featuring the symbols of well-known annual Australian floral festivals. The stamp designs incorporate photographic and graphic elements. The second features floral still life paintings held in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria. It is the first of a planned series of stamps showcasing artistic works from some of Australia’s outstanding collections. Of particular note is the complementing maxicard set, with each card showing the beauty of the artwork in greater detail. This year we see a double celebration for the royal family, with the 85th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the royal wedding of HRH Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton. Collectors of royalty themed stamp issues will be delighted with the attention the commemoration of these special occasions will attract in the philatelic world. Just a reminder that some of the Impressions products are still available for purchase, as well as the new-look Footy Stamps sets for both AFL and NRL teams in 2011. Regards

Michael Zsolt Manager, Philatelic

The recipients of the 2011 Australia Post Australian Legends Award each rose to prominence during the 1970s. This was the period during which second-wave feminism flourished around the world, receiving official recognition when 1975 was declared International Women’s Year by the United Nations. During this decade, our four Legends each addressed various issues of women’s inequality in Australia and internationally through their writing, activism, judicial work, advocacy or a combination of these activities. 1671002 First day cover

A glance over many a garden fence will reveal Australians’ great love of gardening and blooms. This is underscored by the popularity of floral festivals, which have become a feature of many cities and regional towns. Because flowers are also a strong stamp thematic, this issue has been developed to recognise both the popularity of flowers and the value of floral festivals. Each stamp represents a specific festival. Gerbera The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show takes place at the historic Carlton Gardens and Royal Exhibition Building each autumn. Known as much for the landscape architecture displays as for the blooms, this popular event is symbolised by the gerbera, a native of South Africa. Jacaranda The Jacaranda Festival has been held annually in Grafton since 1935, making it Australia’s longest-running floral festival. Many of Grafton’s streets are fringed with plantings of Jacaranda mimosifolia established from the 1930s, thus making the tree the obvious botanical emblem for the town’s floral festival.

The month-long festival showcases the wildflowers of the state, which is home to several thousand species of this botanical gem. The stamp design shows the Australian everlasting. Violet Queensland’s Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers was inaugurated in 1949 as a spur to economic activity following World War II. Providing enjoyment to locals and visitors ever since, the Toowoomba Carnival has selected the popularly cultivated violet (species Violet odorata) to represent it. Tulip Since its inception in 1988, Canberra’s Floriade has used the tulip as its signature bloom. To create a flower-lover’s paradise, more than one million bulbs and annuals – including some 80odd varieties of colourful tulip – are planted so that they bloom in time for the spring festival.

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) was founded on 24 May 1861. For 150 years, Australia’s first public art museum has continued to flourish, recognised nationally and internationally for the breadth and significance of its collections.

1677002 First day cover

The gallery’s collections have been created through the support of many benefactors, among whom Alfred Felton (1831–1904) is pre-eminent. The Felton Bequest has enabled the gallery to acquire important works by old and modern masters, and includes paintings, sculpture, prints and drawings, and the decorative arts. Today, philanthropists remain as important as ever in helping acquire new works for the NGV collection. Flowers have long been a favourite subject of artists, and this stamp issue features a selection of floral still life paintings by Australian artists drawn from the collections of the NGV. These include A bunch of flowers (1930) by Nora Heysen (1911–2003), who was best known for her exquisite still life paintings and portraits. Heysen was born in Hahndorf, South Australia.

ISSUE HIGHLIGHTS The maxicard set brings into sharper detail these striking floral arrangement paintings. They are superb as a framed set for all to enjoy. The decorative gutter strip incorporates tubes of artist paint as graphic elements.

Camellias was painted by the artist, teacher and critic Arnold Shore (1897–1963) in 1937. Shore adapted his postimpressionistic painting style to depict the Australian bush, and also painted still lifes and occasional portraits. Fruit and flowers was painted circa 1924 by Vida Lahey (1882–1968), who began her art studies in Brisbane around 1903, before training at the National Gallery School, Victoria. Still life, Zinnias by Roy de Maistre (1894–1968) dates from 1925–30. De Maistre was one of the leading exponents of early modernism in Australia and a pioneer of post-impressionism and cubism in New South Wales.

1677209 Roll of 100

Sir Hans Heysen (1877–1968) was one of Australia’s best known landscape painters. He changed the way we view the Australian landscape, with his distinctive gum trees having now become a part of our national imagery. While in some ways not typical of his work, A cottage bunch, from 1930, is no less accomplished.

Royal Wedding

Prince William and Catherine Middleton were unofficially engaged while holidaying in Kenya in October 2010. His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales formally announced his eldest son’s engagement to Miss Catherine Middleton on 16 November 2010. The couple’s wedding will take place in Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011. Catherine “Kate” Middleton was born on 9 January 1982 and is the eldest of three children born to Carole and Michael Middleton. Kate met Prince William in 2001 while both were studying art history at the University of St Andrew’s in Scotland. Some of the traditions associated with previous British royal weddings have been set aside to make for a more relaxed occasion, the first of which being that the bride arrives by car instead of the more traditional coach.

Australia Post plans to release two stamps and supporting products to celebrate the royal wedding.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has declared the day a public holiday in Britain, so that all may enjoy the celebrations. The two stamps in this issue will feature images of the couple taken after their engagement was announced. Different coloured backgrounds will denote the different denominations, one for a domestic rate (60c) and the other for the international rate to the United Kingdom ($2.20).

As this Bulletin goes to print we are awaiting approval from the Palace on this stamp issue. Please refer to the website for updated information on this important 2011 stamp issue.

MINIATURE SHEET Westminster Abbey has been the scene of many royal occasions, including the wedding of Prince William’s grandmother, the Queen, in 1947, and his great-grandmother, the late Queen Mother, in 1923. The proposed image on the miniature sheet will feature the soaring roof of Westminster Abbey where the young couple are to be married.

Talking Stamps 1947

1d Princess Elizabeth

with Richard Breckon 1981

Royal Wedding Stamps Together with the forthcoming stamps commemorating the marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, Australia has produced three Royal Wedding stamp issues, which embrace three generations of the royal family. On 20 November 1947, the marriage of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh was commemorated by a 1d (one penny) stamp featuring a portrait of Princess Elizabeth, based on a photograph by Dorothy Wilding of London. Although issued as a commemorative, the 1d stamp served as a definitive issue, remaining on sale at post offices until 1953. From the age of 10, Princess Elizabeth was the heir presumptive to the throne. (She was the first in line to the throne, although the birth of a brother would have meant he would have precedence.) On 6 February 1952, Princess Elizabeth ascended the throne as Queen Elizabeth II. A suggestion that an Australian stamp be issued featuring Princess Elizabeth was discussed at a federal cabinet meeting in February 1947. Initially, it had been

18

24c & 60c Royal Wedding

thought the stamp could commemorate the 21st birthday of the Princess on 21 April 1947, but the short leadtime made this impracticable. Instead, the stamp was planned for her wedding in November. The 1d stamp was designed by Ronald Harrison and engraved by Frank Manley, both of whom worked in the Note Printing Branch, Melbourne. A proof of the stamp die was submitted to London for royal approval. The die proof was approved by King George VI, subject to an alteration in the title of the Princess. This had been engraved as “H.R.H. PRINCESS ELIZABETH” but as the King pointed out it should read “H.R.H. THE PRINCESS ELIZABETH”. Otherwise, the King commented that the engraving of the Princess’s portrait was “admirable”. The alteration was duly made and the stamp was issued with the correct inscription. In November 1980, Australia Post commenced preparations for a possible stamp issue to commemorate the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. The official announcement was made on 24 February 1981; the wedding was subsequently fixed for 29 July that year.

In addition to approving the 1981 Royal Wedding stamp issue, Australia Post management permitted a departure from the stamp issue policy to allow Lady Diana Spencer to be depicted on the stamps. The policy at the time precluded living persons from being portrayed on stamps except “The Sovereign and His or Her Spouse or the Heir Apparent”. The prohibition against living persons was removed with the introduction of the annual Australia Post Legends Awards in 1997. The portrait of Prince Charles on the stamps was based on a photograph by Carole Cutner, and the portrait of Lady Diana Spencer was based on a newspaper photograph provided by the Crown Agents. Brian Clinton was commissioned to prepare the stamp designs. Interestingly, the artist produced painted portraits of Charles and Diana, rather than using actual photographs. The inscription on the two stamps reads “Marriage of HRH Charles, Prince of Wales & The Lady Diana Spencer”. Following her marriage, and until her divorce in 1996, Diana was styled “HRH The Princess of Wales”. The Royal Wedding stamps were issued on 29 July 1981 in denominations of 24c and 60c, representing basic letter postage within Australia and the first weight step for air mail letters to Europe, respectively.

How to use this form

Order form Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal

The FDI postmark is GPO Brisbane, Qld 4000 and will be available for an extended period of time. Also available through the Philatelic Bureau.

(Price includes your donation of $2 to the Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal.)

For collectors wanting to apply a first day of issue postmark, this is GPO Brisbane, QLD 4000.

This special sheetlet costs $8, with $2 going directly to the appeal as a donation by the purchaser. The sheetlet includes a receipt for the donation, for taxation purposes.

Five poignant images are featured in the stamp designs, reminding us of the extent of the disaster as well as the human spirit of caring as we respond to the crisis.

This sheetlet of 10 stamps was released on 27 January and is the first of its kind to be produced by Australia Post. The sheetlet is designed to raise funds for the support of those devastated by the floods in Queensland.
