INTRODUCTION

"We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard. ”

It was this pivotal moment in 1962, when US President John F Kennedy declared the impossible to put a man on the moon These words, spoken at a time when NASA was only in its fourth year and international pressure was heightened, sparked an era of a unified determination and hope

The dream ignited tangible action, and after seven years of hard work, culminated in the historic moment when the Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong uttered the historic words upon setting foot on the moon: "That's one small step for man One giant leap for mankind " The Apollo program led by NASA accomplished six successful moon-landing missions, giving twelve lucky brave men the incredible chance to explore the desolate surface

Today, the determination to advance humanity through space exploration is prevalent across the globe Possibilities are near endless, with technologies rapidly advancing and involving more participants than ever before

Reflecting on the ever-evolving landscape of the space industry, “Space Exploration: Past, Present, and Future” highlights the incredible achievements of the Apollo missions and explores what the future of the industry may hold Each work of art represents the ingenuity, innovation, and bravery exhibited by the individuals contributing to the exploration of space, spanning the past, present, and future

As we gaze ahead at the future of space discovery, President Kennedy's words still ring true. This unyielding drive keeps pushing us toward further space advancement and new discoveries, inspiring a future where reaching the stars feels more achievable than ever before

Chromogenic (C-Type) Print

Chromogenic prints often referred to as ‘c-type’ prints are prints produced using chromogenic materials and processes

Chromogenic materials, such as film or photographic paper, are composed of one or many layers of silver halide emulsion. Along with dye couplers, and in combination with processing chemistry, these chemicals form visible dyes

JOHN ANGERSON

John Angerson (b 1969 Bristol, England) started his career in the early 1990s, covering the fall of the Berlin Wall and the changing geopolitical landscape of Eastern Europe Since then, his work has continued to explore the different languages of documentary photography, focusing on how specific communities form, shift and develop

His projects have garnered critical acclaim and exhibited at major art institutions in the UK and overseas His monograph - Love, Power, Sacrifice (published by Dewi Lewis, Manchester) documented the Jesus Army over twenty years and peers into a microcosm of a fanatical religion His most recent book; English Journey (published by B&W studio, Leeds) was a 4year photographic travelogue across England in the footsteps of Bradford author J B Priestley The work presents a purposefully non-nostalgic, contemporary view of England It casts the lens on the globalized economic framework at call centres, transnational hotel chains and the co-dependency of international outsourcing The work was shown in exhibitions across the UK and Europe and the book has sold across three continents since its publication

Angerson has amassed many distinguishing awards At the start of his career he received the Ilford Young Photographer of the Year in 1990 and Kodak Features Photographer of the Year in 1991, and most recently received the Best Photography Award at the Lishui Photography Festival in China (November 2023)

Residing in London, John splits his time between shooting personal projects, teaching at various Universities and shooting features and portraiture for various magazines, charities and design agencies A few of his recent clients include Saturday Times Magazine (London), Sunday Times Magazine (London), New York Times (USA), and Rolling Stones Magazine, among others Exhibitions 2023

ESSAY

America’s fleet of space shuttle orbiters were in service for 30 years, but after 135 missions the era of the NASA space shuttle has now ended Each shuttle was named after pioneering sea vessels that established new frontiers in the research and exploration In 1986 the Challenger orbiter was destroyed shortly after lift-off, it was replaced in 1987 with the Endeavour (OV-105)

In 1995 photographer John Angerson was granted unprecedented access to the Kennedy Space Center, Florida and the Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas to document the final months of a yearlong intensive training program preparing for the NASA Space Transportation System mission (STS-72) in January 1996.

After a flawless launch from the Kennedy Space Center, Endeavour (OV-105) began the nine-day mission. The primary objectives whilst in orbit were to retrieve the Japanese Space flyer unit (SFU) launched by the Japanese in March 1995.

Additionally, the crew deployed and retrieved a second spacecraft carrying NASAsponsored experiments. Later in the mission crewmembers Dan Barry, Leroy Chiao and Winston Scott conducted two six and a half hour spacewalks to test hardware and tools that were to be used in the assembly of the International Space Station (ISS) that became operational in 1998

Since the first manned space mission, some of the most important items that the astronauts have brought back from space have been their photographs, which have over the years permanently changed the way we think, feel and see our place in the universe

Space Shuttle Endeavour (OV-105) at Launch Complex 39B (LC-39B) After the solid rockets are jettisoned, the main engines provide thrust which accelerates the Shuttle from 3,000 mph (4,828 kilometers per hour) to over 17,000 mph (27,358 kilometers per hour) in six minutes to reach orbit They create a combined maximum thrust of more than 12 million pounds

Space Shuttle Endeavour (OV-105) attached to the two Space Shuttle main engine (SSME) that burns cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants Each engine producing 1,859 kN of thrust at lift-off

Space Shuttle pilot Brent W Jett Jr at the controls of the Space Shuttle Endeavour (OV-105) during flight simulations Jett served as the Commander of Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS–115 He traveled over 121 million miles and logged a total of 41 days, 18 hours, and 1 minute in space

Space Shuttle pilot Brent W. Jett Jr. in the White Room of the Endeavour (OV105) orbiter. This area could only accommodate one or two astronauts at a time during boarding. With assistance, each member of the flight crew donned a parachute pack and crawled through the open hatch and into the shuttle.

STERLING D. CRAWFORD

Sterling Crawford is an artist and founder of Stall Three Studio

After completing her undergraduate studies in Finance at the College of Charleston in 2019, Sterling embarked on a professional career in accounting She was commissioned to paint a dog portrait for a vineyard in Napa Valley shortly after college, which ignited her passion for painting and sparked a series of commissions

Sterling transitioned from her full-time role in accounting to pursue her artistic aspirations in 2023 It wasn't long before she recognized the potential to merge her artistic talents with her business background, culminating in the creation of Stall Three Studio

The creation of Stall Three Studio marked the beginning of an exciting chapter for Sterling, as she sought to leverage her platform to raise awareness for various global causes The inaugural collection, titled "Inside Africa," served as a tribute to wildlife conservation efforts in Africa, particularly focusing on the plight of rhinos threatened by poaching

Central to Sterling's artistic ethos is the belief that art possesses the remarkable ability to unite people and broaden their perspectives This philosophy serves as the driving force behind Stall Three Studio's multifaceted endeavors

Today, Sterling and her husband split their time between Greenville, South Carolina and their family’s farm, where her studio inspired the name for ‘Stall Three Studio’

ESSAY

“Space exploration has been a constant presence throughout my life, given that my grandfather was the 10th and youngest man to walk on the Moon However, when you're intimately connected to something, you may not fully grasp its true significance. While I grew up aware of my family's connection to space, I didn't truly understand the courage and commitment of astronauts, nor did I fully appreciate the rare privilege of having a grandfather who achieved such extraordinary feats - a distinction shared by only 12 individuals worldwide who can say "I walked on the moon"

Though I'll never comprehend the immense effort required to reach the moon during the Apollo missions, I strive to learn as much as I can about my grandfather's experiences I'm also determined to honor his accomplishments, using them as a source of inspiration and education for others

That's precisely the purpose behind this collection and the paintings I've created for it

Titled 'Portrait of Charles M Duke Jr', this debut oil painting portrait holds personal significance As with all portraits, there is an immense responsibility to capture the essence of the subject accurately In addition, there is responsibility to capture my grandfather in the many ways he is seen - a grandfather, an American hero, a patriot, a Christian, a businessman, a husband, a father, and a Space Celebrity

The second painting is a narrative, multi-figure work Depicting the Apollo 16 crew in the final stages of preparing for their journey to the moon, one might expect tension and anxiety Yet, the expressions of the Apollo crew and the scientists and engineers convey excitement, relaxation, and joy My grandfather often reminisces about the joy he and his crew-mates experienced during their lunar expedition Listening to recordings from their time on the moon reveals their playful banter and evident delight Despite the gravity of their tasks, they approached their mission with a sense of joy and wonder, embracing the moon's surface as a new playground in space

I hope these paintings convey the exhilaration of exploration and serve as a reminder to continue to honor our American heroes”

The paintings will be revealed for the first time at the Space Exploration Launch Event on April 25th, 2024

NIKOLINA KOVELENKO

Nikolina Kovalenko is interested in humanity’s psychological connection with Nature and strives to expose the consequences our everyday actions have on the environment The artist works with fragile ecosystems creating artwork inspired by locations specific to each project Her subjects range from global warming, deforestation and coral bleaching, to exploring how Nature is historically incorporated into mythologies and cultural beliefs

Nikolina Kovalenko received her MFA from Moscow Surikov Art Institute (Moscow, Russia) in 2011 and studied at Universität der Künste (Berlin) in 2010 She holds a Gold Medal from the Russian Art Academy The artist currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY

Kovalenko’s exhibition history includes solo shows at Caldwell Gallery Hudson and Dacia Gallery among others The museum shows include group shows at MOMMA (Moscow Museum Of Modern Art) in 2021 and The Russian Museum (Saint Petersburg, Russia) in 2019 Nikolina exhibited in galleries and art fairs in the USA, UK, United Arab Emirates, Sweden, Russia, Japan, Germany, France, China, Belgium and Iceland and worked on environmental projects around the world including Brazilian Amazon, Iceland, the Andes, the Caribbean and the Red Sea Collaborations include projects with Coral Reef Alliance, Museum Week and UNESCO

Through collaborating with scientists on joint lectures, workshops and webinars, the artist strives to share a more creative approach to explaining the fragility of ecosystems and the steps one can take to protect them She donates part of the proceeds from her selected projects to environmental conservation organizations

Kovalenko’s work has been reviewed in art blogs, newspapers and magazines and is in numerous corporate and private collections worldwide

ESSAY

My work explores how humans incorporate Nature into mythologies and cultural believes From time immemorial, the Moon has been a major symbol for humanity, representing everything from early deities to scientific advancement, from the earliest origins of our solar system to the promise of a future outside earth

For centuries, people have believed that the Moon affects human behaviour It is also the source of one of the most important natural rhythms of the earth- the tides The phases of the Moon provided an important timekeeping measure for humans throughout history; today, many cultures still follow the lunar calendar

We continue to acknowledge the power of this symbolism, and the unique power the moon has over human consciousness”

ANDY SAUNDERS

Andy Saunders (born July 3, 1974) is a best-selling British author, science writer, and one of the world's foremost experts of NASA digital restoration His photographic work has been exhibited internationally at some of the most renowned venues, and regularly makes headlines in the world press - including BBC News, CBS News, Daily Telegraph, New York Times, USA Today, Smithsonian Magazine and The Guardian, among others His remastered images have also been utilised by NASA and reside in their own archives

Andy is originally from Appley Bridge, near Wigan, England and graduated from Loughborough University in 1996 After a career in logistics and management consultancy, he began renovating properties and continued his passion for photography A lifelong Apollo obsessive, he then found a way to unite two of his passions by restoring the old film footage from the golden era of human space exploration

In 2019 Andy produced the only clear, recognizable image of Neil Armstrong on the Moon, for the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 He went on to reveal life on board the stricken Apollo 13 mission, and in 2021 found Alan Shepard’s golf ball on the lunar surface - finally revealing how far the “miles and miles” shot went, half a century after the event Later the same year his imaging work and analysis helped to solve one of NASA’s most enduring mysteries, by determining the most likely cause of the sinking of Gus Grissom’s Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft, 60 years after the world’s 3rd spaceflight; finally vindicating Grissom

In 2023 he became the third British recipient of the coveted Royal Photographic Society international Award For Scientific Imaging The RPS said, “In their 145th year, the awards are the world’s longest-running and most prestigious photography honors, recognizing individuals who are making significant contributions across still and moving image Science has been at the heart of the Society since it was founded in 1853 Its mission to ‘promote the art and science of photography’ has been underpinned more recently by its pledge to make ‘photography for everyone’ The work of Andy Saunders unites both those aims - a body of work that is a giant leap in the world of scientific imaging, with his stunning restoration efforts on the photographs taken during the Apollo missions His major innovation, a complex stacking technique, to allow him to produce images from sequences with a moving ‘movie’ camera, and even subjects moving within the scene, allowed Saunders to reveal previously unseen elements of historic events”

As of 2023, he is 49 years old and lives in Culcheth, Cheshire with his young family

Andy is a regular contributor to science-based media and appears on TV, radio, and as a guest speaker at events to discuss the history of spaceflight, photography and digital image enhancement / restoration He is an occasional guest judge of international photography competitions and regularly posts newly remastered and restored images on social media

Secured for five decades in a frozen vault at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, lies the original photographic film of the NASA Apollo missions There are approximately 35,000 images, photographed by the crew members, yet almost every image ever seen has been based on lower-quality duplicate film The vast majority have never been published, their obscurity due, in part, to the poor quality of the original images or the difficulty restoring intelligible prints from the duplicate film

Now, with the development of new technology, the original film has been thawed, cleaned, and digitally remastered with painstaking care and state-of-the-art techniques by Andy Saunders, who is one of the world’s foremost digital image restorers Andy’s collection ‘Apollo Remastered’ captures more than 400 of these fully restored images, showcasing the highest quality images of the Apollo missions ever produced, including never-before-seen spacewalks and crystal-clear portraits of astronauts in the spacecraft, along with stunning new vistas of the Earth and the Moon

April 20, 1972 After 12 orbits of the Moon, Orion separated from Casper in preparation for powered descent to the surface Mattingly, in the CSM, undertook a visual inspection of the LM: “You sure look good!” An essential check was that all landing gear was properly deployed Here, the US flags on the Lunar Rover’s fenders can be seen to the right of the ladder, through the gap in what appears to be a door, but is actually the chassis of the folded Lunar Rover

Restored with meticulous care, the original NASA photograph presents the lunar module, a symbol of human ingenuity and exploration, suspended in the vast expanse of the darkness of space, creating a stark yet mesmerizing contrast With a striking blend of cosmic allure and technological marvel, this artwork seamlessly complements any interior, inviting contemplation on the mysteries of the universe and the unyielding spirit that fuels our relentless pursuit of discovery
