Here’s a list of Greek castles highly sought after for marriage ceremonies, also providing the perfect setting for a honeymoon. Your fairytale wedding in Greece begins here.
Monemvasia town
If you imagine a wedding in a mediaeval fortified town which is buzzing with life, with beautiful flower pots, small shops, Byzantine churches, traditional stone-built houses, cobblestone alleys, and affording lovely views of the Aegean Sea, then there is one for you that fits right into that picture - a place that used to be the haunt of emperors and princesses a long time ago. Welcome to the fortified town of Monemvasia, on the eastern coast of Laconia, Peloponnese. The castle and town have been built on a huge rock on a small peninsula connected to the mainland with a bridge. Once across the bridge and through the stone walls and massive gate of the castle, you will feel like you go back in time and you live in a fairy tale. In this atmosphere steeped in history and romance, you will find numerous options for holding your ceremony whether you opt for a civil one or an Orthodox wedding. Balconies overlooking the sea, small squares, luxury hotels or even sandy beaches and many churches will make your wishes for holding the wedding of your dreams come true.
Wedding receptions can be held there too, as hotels and restaurants are located in the mediaeval town, so it is possible to have the wedding and reception within the town walls, which overlook Myrtoo Sea and offer panoramic views of the surrounding land and sea. During your honeymoon, you can go sightseeing, visit the Byzantine
churches, and the archaeological museum, take a stroll around the uninhabited upper town and back on the mainland, you can go sailing, on a wine tour, try horse riding, see the amazing caves and the area’s petrified forest; it’s all part of the allure of Monemvasia.
Nafplio town
If you dream of getting married in a picturesque Venetian-style house, and you enjoy the stunning views of bays and fortresses, then choose Nafplio for your special day. It is a seaside town located in the northeast of the Peloponnese, which combines natural beauty, a romantic atmosphere, a long history and will offer you a comfortable stay. The town’s rich history includes three fortresses: Akronafplia, Palamidi and Bourtzi. Palamidi is a wonderfully preserved baroque fortress built on the city’s highest point, Bourtzi is located on a small island in front of the town port and is accessible by boat, and Akronafplia is the oldest of the fortresses and features some sections dating back to the Bronze Age. Nafplio and its environs can provide you with the setting that will mark the happy occasion of a lifetime, with its atmosphere, the ancient monuments and fountains surrounded by colourful sprawling vines of bougainvillaea!
While you honeymoon in Nafplio, there is a world full of charm, magic and adventure for you to explore. You’ll see orange and olive groves, ancient ruins dating to a lost civilisation, and Epidaurus, the nearby ancient theatre, known for its amazing acoustics. You can try activities such as hiking, canoeing along the Lousios River, sailing, swimming, scuba diving, fishing, horse riding, and wine tasting, to name but a few.
Rethymno town
Rethymno, a destination well-known for its historic centre, unspoilt nature, beautiful beaches, as well as its luxury hotels, invites you to have a once in a lifetime experience at the beginning of your married life. The city’s dreamy atmosphere, its awe-inspiring mediaeval churches, and its outstanding wedding venues create the perfect setting for your ceremony. Several venues also provide facilities where you can have both your civil ceremony and your reception.

Lindos, Rhodes Island
Fancy a romantic beach wedding in mesmerising scenery, along Rhodes’ stunning shoreline with a view to Lindos Castle? The village of Lindos is a romantic wedding destination, with cobblestone streets - all of which are entirely pedestrianised, and the standard modes of transport are donkeys and mopeds. The houses are small, whitewashed and are built on the hillside. On the top of the rock stands a centuries-old acropolis, overlooking the sea.
Civil ceremonies as well as orthodox weddings can be arranged at the very pretty and always popular chapel in St Paul’s Bay with a breathtaking view to Lindos Castle. There are many luxury hotels as well as other idyllic ceremony venues, restaurants and tavernas to host your reception.
While you honeymoon in Lindos, stroll around the picturesque village and pay a visit to the picture-perfect mediaeval captains’ residences and see their beautiful pebble courtyards. Visit the ruins of the Acropolis of Lindos, the Temple of Athena Lindia, the Propylaea, the large Hellenistic arcade, the Byzantine chapel of Agios Ioannis and the castle of the Knights of Saint John. Go swimming at the beaches of Lardou, Glistra, Gennadi and Kiotari, and enjoy windsurfing, kite flying, jet skiing and diving. At Saint Paul’s Bay, too, you can relax by the azure sea or practise your favourite water sports.
Parga town
Located at the foot of the rock dominated by the imposing mediaeval fortress, the town of Parga, oozes an island-like charm. Its narrow-cobbled streets climb to the top of the hill, and there’s an old-time cosmopolitan atmosphere that has its roots in history and legend. Built on the southwest of Epirus region, Parga’s shoreline is washed by the Ionian Sea, and it’s located right between the towns of Preveza and Igoumenitsa. The castle is a typical example of Venetian architecture, where you can have the wedding of your dreams. The view towards the sea, the coves and the green island of Panagia with its charming chapel will definitely make a deep impression on you. After the ceremony you can walk towards the town centre, where there are many hotels and restaurants that will satisfy your requirements for holding the reception of your dreams.
While you honeymoon in Parga, you can go jet skiing, surfing, and scuba diving on the local beaches. Enjoy a river walk along Acheron River, amid green surroundings. According to ancient Greeks, this area was the entrance that led souls to Hades’ Realm - the underworld. Visit the archaeological site of Dodoni and Ancient Nikopolis, the Perama cave, and take a boat trip to Paxos and Antipaxos, two lovely little islands that will charm you with their great natural beauty and traditions.
