AcademicScholarsatSTAHSbecomemembersofalearnedsociety:the1889Club,namedinrecognition oftheSchool’sfoundingyear.The1889Clubhasthreedivisions,eachofwhichhasalivelyand distinctiveprogramme.

VeraAtkinswasatalentedlinguistwhojoinedtheSpecialOperationsExecutive(SOE)inthe1940s,abranchofBritishMilitary Intelligenceresponsiblefortrainingandsendingagentsoverseas OurYear7toYear9AcademicScholarsarenamedafter Atkinsinhonourofherremarkableefficiencyandintelligence,whichwasaccompaniedbydeephumanityandasenseof responsibilitytoprotecttheagentsshewassendingtopossibledeath Aclevercryptographer,shewouldofteninterpret seeminglyindecipherablemessagesthathaddefeatedalltheeffortsofofficialdecoders

ThroughouttheDramaScholarshipprogrammethisyearIhavereceivedamazingopportunities.I particularlyenjoyedourplay‘RebelliousWomen’thatwascommissionedforus.Inotonlylearnt aboutthesufferingthesewomenwentthroughbutalsotheempowermentthatcamewiththe movement.Thiswasveryinspirationaltomeasayoungwomanaspiringtobeanactor.

BeingaDramaScholarhasgivenmesomanyopportunitiestoexplorepartsoftheatrethatInever would have thought to look into. It's been a real privilege to meet and work with industry professionalsaswellastalentedfellowstudents.

STAHSDuCaneScholarshipsarenamedafterMollieDuCanewhowasagreatenthusiastforandsupporterofthemusical lifeofStAlbans.Bornin1909,MolliewasthegranddaughterofDeanWalterLawrance,oneofthefoundersoftheHigh School.SheattendedtheSchoolandwentontobecomealong-servinggovernorandChairmanoftheOldGirls’Association.

MusicisintegraltodailylifeatSTAHS.Ourcurricularandco-curricularmusicprogrammeenablespupilstodevelopinto well-roundedmusicianswhopossessbothexcellentmusicalandauralskillsaswellastechnicalproficiencyontheir instruments.AcrosstheSeniorSchool,approximatelyhalfofallpupilsparticipateinensemblesandorchestras,andthey havenumerousopportunitiestoperformtogetherandindividuallyinourmanyconcerts,masterclassesandsoloperformance evenings.Wehaveacommitmenttodevelopingchambermusiciansandpupilshavetheopportunitytoperformwithandlead chamberensemblesfromYear7.STAHSoffersInstrumentalScholarshipsinYear7,Year10andYear12.
