From our Character Education programme, which starts in Reception, to our SuperCurriculum that stretches pupils beyond the limits of exam specifications, to our formal leadership programme for Sixth Formers, Teach to 25 runs through every aspect of a STAHS education. STAHS pupils gain the skills, independence and knowledge needed to navigate their path in the critical early years of adult life.

We are incredibly proud of STAHS Sixth Form. Our amazing Sixth Form building is more like a university than a school. The study areas, computer rooms, dedicated Sixth Form library and, of course, Sixth Form Common Room, encourage our students to work hard and collaborate with each other in their learning and in all aspects of Sixth Form life.

Our small class sizes enable excellent relationships between staff and students. Students think for themselves beyond the curriculum and extend their learning, but they know that their teachers are always there for them if they need help and guidance. Rapport between staff and students is excellent; students have access to a wide network of support from our experienced and knowledgeable staff – there is always someone to turn to.

Our Higher Education and Careers Teams have an impressive range of experience in preparing our students not just for UK universities, but also for study abroad, conservatoires, foundation courses and apprenticeships. We are immensely proud of our track record of success: thanks to our individualised approach to pastoral and academic support, typically

more than 90% of A level grades at STAHS are A* to B and our students consistently meet the requirements for entry to their next stage of education.

Our Special Destinations programmes, covering Oxbridge, medical, veterinary and dental schools and the overseas universities, start early and enable students to push themselves well beyond the confines of the A level syllabus, whilst helping them prepare for associated interviews and exams. At STAHS, we view entry into the Sixth Form as the start of the journey to adulthood. These are the first two years in a trajectory that will take our students through their A levels, university degrees or other higher education qualifications and into their first career. Our Teach to 25 philosophy means that the STAHS Sixth Form really is a bridge between secondary and tertiary education, ensuring that the physical and academic freedom enjoyed by our Sixth Formers is balanced by a clearly defined structure that ensures well-rounded personal development, intellectual growth, acquisition of skills for life, a commitment to service and experience of – and training in – leadership.

The STAHS Diploma provides this structure. The Diploma is the framework for the STAHS Sixth Form experience.

All STAHS Sixth Formers embark on the Diploma journey, engaging over the course of Years 12 and 13 with each of the four distinct pillars of the Diploma: Academics, Skills for Life, Service and Leadership, and Making the Leap. Students develop their individual Diploma Portfolio where they record and evidence their achievements and participation in a range of activities and pursuits, ensuring they meet the expectations for each pillar, but often far surpassing the requirements.

The STAHS Sixth Form is so much more than just A level education. The Diploma provides a fantastic platform to document and track many successes and helps students better understand their strengths and areas for development. The Diploma encourages students to take ownership of their education and to make well-informed and independent decisions about their future.

Academics

The STAHS Sixth Form supports students with a genuine love of learning. This pillar encompasses A level studies, EPQs, SuperCurricular studies and additional academic workshops, lectures, masterclasses and other intellectual pursuits.

Service and Leadership

Providing positive, supportive leadership and engaging in service to the community (within the School and our local area as well as nationally and globally) are fundamental STAHS values embodied by our Sixth Form students. This pillar includes community service and charitable activity, activism and leadership opportunities.

Skills for Life

The 21st century workplace requires skills and intellectual dexterity that are often not acquired in the classroom. The Skills for Life pillar includes the STAHS co-curriculum and a rich non-examined curriculum to enable students to discover new hobbies, interests and skills.

World-class teaching and extension way beyond the examined curriculum mean STAHS Sixth Formers achieve the very best A level results and go on to study at top higher education institutions in the UK and abroad, and springboard into phenomenal careers.

STAHS Sixth Formers are very able and all students start their A level journey with four subjects. We value learning for its own sake and encourage students to carry on with the subjects they love – even if those are well outside the norm for their desired degree choice. Decisions about A levels have far-reaching implications on the options available after school – selecting four A levels gives our students more choice as their higher education and career ambitions evolve. We encourage all students to consider doing an EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) alongside their A levels,

engaging with academia and broadening their horizons. As students gain greater clarity about their future plans, they have the option to continue with four A Levels or transition to three. We always seek feedback from their teachers to ensure that the decision they make is well-informed and aligned with their individual strengths and aspirations.

Our unique STAHS SuperCurriculum, with weekly timetabled sessions, takes academics at STAHS beyond the limits of examinations. Every academic department devotes significant time to our SuperCurriculum, devising bespoke programmes of undergraduate level academic stimulus alongside expert preparation for all higher education pathways. Students are paired with subject mentor teachers for higher education entry, including support with personal statement writing and any additional admissions tests.

As part of our Sixth Form Diploma programme, whether hearing from an astronaut, a campaigner, a CEO or a creative trailblazer, our visiting academic lecture series ensures Sixth Formers are informed and educated by inspirational people from all walks of life.

Our outstanding results only tell part of the story: not only do our students achieve spectacular A level results, gaining places at the most prestigious universities, conservatoires, foundation courses and apprenticeships in the UK and beyond, they leave with the independence and drive to complete their higher education and enter the world of work with confidence and determination. In the STAHS Sixth Form, pastoral care and academic excellence are not competing factors – they are two sides of the same coin. We recognise that the students most able to pursue their educational ambitions, take calculated academic risks and achieve top outcomes are those who feel happy, secure and supported both at home and at school. This is why we take our responsibility to provide nurturing support seriously, alongside providing an environment where students are given the freedom and independence to make – and take responsibility for – their own choices.

Students have the support of the Sixth Form team, who have the time and structure to really get to know each student as an individual. They understand their strengths and areas for development, advocate on their behalf, push them when needed, celebrate their successes and encourage them when things don’t go to plan.

All students are in one of four Houses – Julian, Mandeville, Paris or Verulam, each with a Head of House. House spirit at STAHS runs deep with competitions, led by Sixth Form Officers, running throughout the year.

STAHS provides an education for life. For us, this means so much more than classroom learning. Our expansive and dynamic co-curriculum provides students with the opportunity to explore new and interesting ideas and to discover hobbies and passions that will stay with them long after they leave school. There really is something for everyone. For some, it’s the thrill of taking part in one of the dozens of recreational and competitive sports on offer, others are drawn to the adventure and comradery of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. From chamber music and choirs to the production of plays and musicals, from organising House activities to participating in inter-school academic tournaments, all passions and interests are catered for.

Fun is of paramount importance when it comes to the co-curriculum, making these activities some of the most rewarding aspects of School life

There are many opportunities for academic visits and overseas trips on offer, starting with an induction trip at the beginning of Year 12 to celebrate the start of the Sixth Form experience. Students may then find themselves trekking in Borneo, on a Drama trip to New York or playing netball in Sydney.

Fun is of paramount importance when it comes to the co-curriculum, making these activities some of the most rewarding aspects of School life. Because our co-curriculum is ‘live’, always adapting, growing and changing based on student input, every year offers new opportunities. In or out of the classroom, there’s never a dull moment at STAHS.

Higher Education

At STAHS, our Teach to 25 philosophy means everything we do is geared towards students’ next steps. We encourage them to think beyond the obvious choices and turn their passions into careers.

Our Higher Education and Careers Team sits at the very heart of the School. It oversees well-resourced programmes designed to help STAHS pupils understand how the skills and knowledge they are acquiring now can be transferred and applied to any number of post-secondary education and career choices open to them.

YEAR 12

UK AND OVERSEAS UNIVERSITIES

Personal statement workshop

Students take part in a workshop to help them get started on their personal statements. Each student is assigned a mentor from the relevant department(s) to provide guidance and feedback until their UCAS application is submitted.

UCAS fair trip

We visit a UCAS Discovery Exhibition where students can speak to representatives from over 100 higher education providers.

Summer holidays

Students continue to engage with SuperCurricular activities, work experience and summer schools. Students also finalise personal statements.

Higher education information evening

Parents and students are invited to learn more about post-18 education in the UK and abroad through a variety of talks and workshops.

OXBRIDGE Admissions test and interview preparation

Preparation for admissions tests and interviews continues with the support of subject specialists through the Sixth Form Stretch programme.

MEDVETDENT UCAT course (external) or similar

Students receive guidance on how to prepare for the UCAT admissions test during their MedVetDent sessions but are also given the opportunity to attend a bespoke course in Trinity term of Year 12.

Every student meets with both the Head of Higher Education and the Head of Sixth Form for a final review of their UCAS form before submission.

Students are walked through the details of tuition fees, maintenance loans and applying for student finance.

Students confirm their firm and insurance choices

Students meet with the Head of Higher Education and receive feedback on aspects of university life, such as tuition fees and accommodation, to help them decide which UCAS offers to accept.

We have a vibrant worldwide community of STAHS alumni, who frequently support our current students by giving up their time to attend events or offer guidance in a specific industry.

Our comprehensive careers programme includes an online mentoring network, providing Sixth Formers and recent leavers with the opportunity to contact STAHS alumni studying at their chosen higher education setting or working in an industry they are interested in. In addition, we offer a curated jobs board and a consultation with a professional careers advisor.

Our online portal enables alumni to stay connected to STAHS and each other via a dynamic and engaging platform. In addition, our regular e-newsletters and annual alumni magazine keep former students up to date with the latest information on reunions, careers events and alumni news.

ASPIRE

The STAHS Sixth Form Scholarships programme offers a range of opportunities for Scholars to stretch themselves, extending their learning and developing their skills. Our Scholars are role models, leading by example in their attitude and approach and passionately promoting engagement in their areas.

Academic

STAHS Sixth Form Academic Scholars are named De Beauvoir Fellows in honour of the French philosopher and writer, Simone de Beauvoir. De Beauvoir Fellows work closely with staff and Scholars in all year groups, engaging in interdisciplinary projects, leading workshops, attending conferences and charitable activities. The Fellowship develops high-level thinking and analytical skills, debating and public speaking skills and offers increased academic freedom to independently explore ideas.

Art

Art at STAHS supports a pupil’s creativity, independence and expression and –especially at A level – encourages risk-taking, critical thinking and extensive research. Art is celebrated throughout the School and over the entire academic year: from gallery visits and exhibitions to work with our Artist in Residence, there is always something going on. STAHS artists have a bright, naturally-lit and spacious specialist study space to work in, with access to all manner of media and equipment with which to produce their work.

Debating

Becoming a STAHS Debating Scholar is more than just mastering the art of argumentation; it’s about embracing leadership, honing public speaking skills, and inspiring others. Debating Scholars champion our ethos of respectful and informed debate, lead our student societies and nurture the next generation of young debaters. Through regular training sessions, and a programme of competitions, we aim for all to achieve excellence in analytical reasoning, and confidence in public speaking.

Design and Technology

At STAHS, provision of Design and Technology education is second to none. We genuinely value the range of opportunities and the breadth of skills that can be developed through the study of Design and Technology. From 3D Design to Textiles, STAHS pupils can pursue several creative and technical pursuits through our Design and Technology curriculum.

Drama

Drama at STAHS values both academic and performance disciplines. Students access a rich, diverse programme, gaining experience and drawing inspiration from professional theatre practitioners. Drama Scholars are proactive participants, leading projects, mentoring others and embracing challenges. They are also the theatre makers of tomorrow, whether as playwrights, directors, performers or technicians, and thrive on the freedom this affords them. As well as acting, stagecraft and technical theatre skills, the transferable skills of creativity, problem-solving, teamwork and leadership are developed over a variety of theatrical genres.

Music

Music is integral to daily life at STAHS and we offer both instrumental and choral scholarships in Year 12. Our curricular and co-curricular music programme enables pupils to develop into well-rounded musicians who possess both excellent musical and aural skills as well as technical proficiency on their instruments. Music Scholars act as ambassadors for the department and are expected to perform in concerts and events throughout the school year.

Sport

Our Sports Scholars lead by example and represent STAHS at all levels. In return we cultivate not just athletic prowess but also leadership skills, outstanding sportsmanship, and all-round resilience. We believe in developing multi-disciplinary talents, ensuring students thrive both on and off the field. Our Scholars partake in the Elite Athlete Support Programme, which offers personalised guidance from dedicated teachers and expert coaches to help them develop physically and psychologically, empowering them to achieve their personal sporting ambitions. Aside from our Scholars’ programmes there are also ample opportunities for all pupils to enjoy recreational and competitive sport, both at a team and individual level.

COMMUNITY

Thought-provoking and inspiring assemblies bring our School community together, with a strong student voice and collective sense of purpose.

PURPOSEFUL

The School site is open to students from 07.30 to 18.00 – days are fun-packed and productive. Before school, Sixth Formers can meet up in the Common Room, or start the day with a workout prior to registration. Study pods and the Sixth Form library provide dedicated quiet space and specialist resources.

CHALLENGED

The STAHS Sixth Form is about so much more than A levels. Our Teach to 25 philosophy takes students well beyond the confines of the examined curriculum. Through the STAHS Diploma, students take ownership of their Sixth Form experience and make well-informed and independent decisions about their future.

EXPRESSIVE

With over 100 clubs and societies to choose from, there truly is something for everyone. Students are given the chance to explore hobbies and express passions that will stay with them for life and are encouraged to set up new clubs and societies if their area of interest is not currently represented.

CURIOUS

Our Sixth Form students benefit from inspirational external speakers, with lectures, regular careers talks, webinars and events. In the last year, over 80 alumni spoke to students – either through a talk, webinar or one-to-one chat – about their career, industry or university course.

EXCITED

Providing an education for life means so much more than classroom learning. Students benefit greatly from our exciting and enriching programme of events and trips that range from curriculum-enhancing local visits to international sports and music tours.

CONNECTED

Our extensive coach network has been serving STAHS for over 40 years, covering 15 different routes and transporting over 400 students each day from the surrounding areas of Hertfordshire and north London.

STAHS Sixth Formers learn to be leaders with a programme of training, modelling and opportunities to lead. From becoming a School or House Officer to running an academic or co-curricular club or society – there is something for everyone.

Applying for a place

STAHS is looking for well-rounded students with a genuine interest in education in the broadest sense of the word, with interests that stretch beyond the confines of the academic curriculum.

Please complete the application form on our website at stahs.org.uk/admissions Your application is confirmed by paying a non-refundable fee. If you are on a low income and applying for bursary support, we may be able to waive the application fee –please contact us for details.

Current STAHS Year 11 students do not need to complete an application form for Sixth Form entry.

Assessment and selection

Students are asked to indicate the subjects they would like to study for A level. On Assessment Day, students complete online baseline assessments in vocabulary, mathematics and non-verbal reasoning and a non-subject specific written paper testing critical thinking and communication.

Candidates are selected for interview based on their performance on assessment day and return to STAHS for an interview with the Head and Head of Sixth Form.

Our selection process is designed to identify students who are able to benefit from our balanced education, thrive in our academic environment and make a positive contribution towards the life of the School.

Successful candidates are made offers conditional on obtaining the required GCSE results for their chosen A level subjects and a minimum of Grade 6 in both Maths and English.

Fees

Fees cover all tuition. Additional costs include trips, music tuition, speech and drama, and some extra-curricular activities. Termly fees are payable in advance or by monthly direct debit.

We offer parents a range of options for fees payments, including monthly instalments via School Fee Plan.

Bursaries

We welcome applications for bursaries from anyone joining the Sixth Form. STAHS is committed to providing a transformative secondary education to as many of the young people who meet our entry criteria as possible, regardless of their families’ financial circumstances. Students likely to succeed will have a strong academic record. All enquiries and applications are handled in the strictest confidence.
