STAHS is truly unique. In the Senior School, we’re a close-knit community that values inclusivity and intellectual curiosity. From the very start of Year 7, students are introduced to a broad and enriching curriculum. Whether it’s learning to cook in Food Preparation and Nutrition or exploring particle arrangements in Chemistry, every subject is designed to engage and inspire.
Our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) carousel gives Year 7 students the rare opportunity to sample all five languages offered at STAHS. By Year 9, students begin to refine their subject choices, selecting those that align with their passions and future goals as they prepare for GCSEs.
Our dedicated teachers are at the heart of everything we do. They strike the perfect balance between encouraging independence and offering support. Whether you need a guiding hand or space to grow, they’ll be there every step of the way.

STAHS is one of the highest performing independent day schools in the UK. We are selective at all points of entry and our admissions process is carefully structured so we really get to know each candidate – and so you get to know STAHS.

Most pupils study 10 GCSE subjects. All pupils study the core subjects of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Science. The vast majority of pupils take Triple Science (studying Biology, Chemistry and Physics as three separate courses) while some will opt for the Double Science Award (resulting in two, rather than three, GCSE outcomes).
All pupils also study at least one Modern Foreign Language (French, German, Italian, Mandarin or Spanish).
Pupils may then select freely from the following subjects to reach a total of up to 10 subjects where appropriate:

Some pupils will take Music GCSE a year early and then complete the Level 2 Silver Arts Award during their Year 11 course.

At STAHS, wellbeing and academic excellence are not competing factors – they are two sides of the same coin. We recognise that the young people most able to pursue their educational ambitions, take calculated academic risks and achieve top outcomes are those who feel happy, secure and supported at home and at school. This is why we take our responsibility to nurture and care for our pupils very seriously, alongside providing an environment where students are given the freedom and independence to make –and take responsibility for – their own choices.
During Years 7 to 11 we run the STAHS Skills for Life programme to equip students with the knowledge they need to navigate school life and beyond. The programme follows three core themes: relationships, health and wellbeing, and living in the wider world, and is a combination of statutory curriculum as well as bespoke lessons developed specifically to support STAHS students.
Students have the support of their Form Tutor and Head of Year or Head of House, who have the time to really get to know each student as an individual. They understand their strengths and areas for development, advocate on their behalf, celebrate their successes and encourage them when things don’t go to plan.
For specialist support, students can access the STAHS Student Hub, a building that houses our multi-faith prayer space, the chaplain, nurses, counsellors, plus our PSHE and learning support teams.

OAll pupils are in one of four Houses – Julian, Mandeville, Paris and Verulam – and the Houses really are like families within the School. The Form Tutor, Housemistress and Assistant Housemistress are fundamental characters in a STAHS pupil’s life.
Alongside our thriving co-curriculum sits our popular House competition programme, led by our fantastic team of Sixth Form House Officers. There really is an event for everyone, from Dance to Debating, Tennis to Trampolining and the hugely entertaining House Performing Arts held at the Alban Arena. House spirit runs deep between the reds, blues, yellows and greens as they go head-to-head to win points for the biggest prizes of the year, the Chapman and Clark Cups.




STAHS provides an education for life. For us, this means so much more than classroom learning. Our expansive and dynamic co-curriculum provides students with the opportunity to explore new and interesting ideas and to discover hobbies and passions that will stay with them long after they leave school.
There really is something for everyone. For some, it’s the thrill of taking part in one of the dozens of recreational and competitive sports on offer, while others are drawn to the adventure and comradery of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. From chamber music and choirs to the production of plays and musicals, from organising House activities to participating in inter-school academic tournaments, all passions and interests are catered for.
Fun is of paramount importance when it comes to the co-curriculum, making these activities some of the most rewarding aspects of School life
There are many opportunities for visits and trips, with destinations including Germany’s Christmas markets, Iceland’s glaciers and volcanic craters and the US, for ski trips or lacrosse and football tours. At the start of Year 7 pupils enjoy a Bushcraft induction trip, where they camp out under the stars and develop new skills from first aid techniques to cooking over open fires.
Fun is of paramount importance when it comes to the co-curriculum, making these activities some of the most rewarding aspects of School life. Because our co-curriculum is ‘live’, always adapting, growing and changing based on student input, every year offers new opportunities. In or out of the classroom, there’s never a dull moment at STAHS.

The STAHS Scholarships programme opens a range of opportunities for Scholars to stretch themselves, extending their learning and developing their skills. Our Scholars are role models, leading by example in their attitude and approach and passionately promoting engagement in their areas.
Academic Atkins Scholars Year 7
Atkins Scholars are members of the exclusive 1889 Club and have access to the myriad of scholarly activities, workshops and events on offer through the club each year. The research, critical thinking and debating skills learned through the Atkins Scholarship not only prepare pupils to take on ambitious academic challenges later in life, but also provide the solid foundation on which the Hodgkin Scholarship is built.
Hodgkin Scholars Year 10
Hodgkin Scholars begin to work more closely with staff and De Beauvoir Fellows through participation in workshops, off-timetable conferences, events and charitable activities. The Hodgkin Scholarship programme builds on the academic skills learned through the Atkins Scholarship (although being an Atkins Scholar is not a prerequisite to becoming a Hodgkin Scholar). Students continue to develop high-level thinking and analytical skills as well as debating and public speaking skills, and are given increased academic freedom to independently explore their own areas of interest.
Art Year 10
Art at STAHS supports a pupil’s creativity, independence and expression and –especially at A level – encourages risk-taking, critical thinking and extensive research. Art is celebrated throughout the School and over the entire academic year: from gallery showings and exhibitions to work with our Artist in Residence, there is always something going on. STAHS artists enjoy a bright, naturally-lit and spacious specialist study space to work in, with access to all manner of media and equipment.
Design and Technology Year 10
At STAHS, provision of Design and Technology education is second to none. We genuinely value the range of opportunities and the breadth of skills that can be developed through the study of Design and Technology. From 3D Design to Textiles, STAHS pupils can try their hands at several creative and technical pursuits through our Design and Technology curriculum.

Drama at STAHS values both academic and performance disciplines. Students access a rich, diverse programme, gaining experience and drawing inspiration from professional theatre practitioners. Drama scholars are proactive participants, leading projects, mentoring others and embracing challenges – they are the theatre makers of tomorrow, whether as playwrights, directors, performers or technicians, and thrive on the freedom this affords them. As well as acting, stagecraft and technical theatre skills, the transferable skills of creativity, problem-solving, teamwork and leadership are developed over a variety of theatrical genres.

Music
Year 7 and 10
Music is integral to daily life at STAHS and we offer both instrumental and choral scholarships in Year 12. Our curricular and co-curricular music programme enables pupils to develop into well-rounded musicians who possess both excellent musical and aural skills as well as technical proficiency on their instruments. Music Scholars act as ambassadors for the department and are expected to perform in concerts and events throughout the school year.
Sport

Our Sports Scholars lead by example and represent STAHS at all levels. In return we cultivate not just athletic prowess but also leadership skills, outstanding sportsmanship, and all-round resilience. We believe in developing multi-disciplinary talents, ensuring students thrive both on and off the field. Our Scholars partake in the Elite Athlete Support Programme which offers personalized guidance from dedicated teachers and expert coaches to help them develop physically and psychologically, empowering them to achieve their personal sporting ambitions. Aside from our Scholars’ programmes there are also ample opportunities for all pupils to enjoy recreational and competitive sport, both at a team and individual level.

The School is open to pupils from 07.30 to 18.00 –days are fun-packed and productive. Before school, the library is available for quiet time or pupils can start the day with a workout prior to registration. Entry
You can expect to see up to 130 pupils in Year 7 and as we are a through school our Year 6 pupils make up around one third of the cohort.
Sometimes we have occasional places available in year groups other than our standard entry points and it is always worth contacting us to check.
Selection
Our selection process is designed to identify pupils who are able to benefit from our balanced and well-rounded education, thrive in our academic environment and make a positive contribution towards the life of the School. Selection is based on a combination of performance in entrance assessment tests, an interview, and references from previous schools.
Fees
Fees cover all tuition. Additional costs include trips, extra music tuition, speech and drama, and some co-curricular activities. Termly fees are payable in advance or by monthly direct debit.

Bursaries
Bursary awards are available to pupils applying for Year 7 and Year 12 and provide up to 100% assistance with school tuition fees. These awards are typically granted to pupils with a strong academic record. For more information, please visit our website.
Applying for a place
Please complete the application form on our website at stahs.org.uk/admissions Your application is confirmed by paying a non-refundable fee. If you are on a low income and applying for bursary support, we may be able to waive the application fee –please contact us for details.

Once you have applied for a place, you will be invited to one of two optional Entrance Assessment Taster Days (Year 7 only). These include a range of activities and will help pupils understand what to expect on Assessment Day.
Assessment Day
Year 7 Assessment Day combines formal testing and a taste of a STAHS school day, with the chance for candidates to meet our staff, pupils and each other. Pupils sit the Independent Schools Examinations Board (ISEB) Common Pre-Test, along with a written communications task, experience a taster Senior School lesson and take part in educational activities as part of a team.
Some pupils will be able to take the test at their own school if it acts as an invigilation centre for the Common Pre-Test; where this happens, pupils will be with us for half of the day to complete the other elements of Assessment Day.

Interviews
Interviews are with senior members of staff and no preparation is required. The sessions are a relaxed and enjoyable experience, with pupils taking part in stimulating group activities while they are with us.
Practice tests are not available, but examples and practice questions, where relevant, are provided during the tests so that pupils understand what they have to do. In addition, a familiarisation test is available that demonstrates the look and feel of the tests. CONTACT US
