Message from the Dean
Living Generously
Welcome to the autumn edition of Alban News, St Albans Cathedral’s community magazine. Every day of every week there is so much that happens here as people come to our Cathedral and Abbey Church to pray, as visitors and pilgrims, for an activity or event, a lecture or community group, to visit the library or to have a coffee in the Abbot’s kitchen.
What we prioritise as a community is always to offer a warm and generous welcome to all who come here. I know that a generous welcome will be offered to our new staff, some of whom you will be introduced to in the pages ahead.
Do introduce yourself to them when you see them. Watch out also for newcomers’ events coming up – we want to welcome generously new members of our congregation as well! Living generously is part of the essence of our Christian discipleship and is at the heart of the story of Alban, who generously welcomed an asylum seeker into his home. That generous welcome was history changing.
In this autumn season we will be thinking again about what it means to live generously and how Jesus makes it clear this must impact every part of our lives, from the welcome we offer to the Cathedral to what we together, and individually, do with what we have.
An expression of the potential of generosity will be as we host a second Community Showcase on Saturday 12 October. A key goal of this event, as over sixty charities tell their story on stalls in the nave of the Cathedral, is to demonstrate how generosity with our time, talents and resources can make a real difference in our communities and for our world.
Thank you for all the ways in which you are generous to this holy place, and beyond. Following Christ in Alban’s footsteps, may we always be known as people who live generously.
Jo Kelly-Moore | The Dean
Congregational Giving
At St Albans Cathedral we are blessed with an incredibly generous congregation who, through their regular giving, help to support and sustain the Cathedral and our mission of Following Christ, in Alban’s Footsteps. These donations ensure we remain free to enter, that the building is warm and well lit, as well as contributing to the cost of our clergy and music and resourcing our ministry to young and old alike. It also helps us to support some charities and causes that are making a real difference in our community.
In 2023, the Cathedral’s money was spent on these areas of our ministry and activity:
This year we are encouraging everyone in our congregation to think about their circumstances
and then reflect that in their giving. From ‘Giving Sunday’ on 29 September through to 20 October, we will be running a campaign where we seek to increase our Congregational Giving by 24% in 2024. That sounds a lot but most of us haven’t increased our level of giving for several years and so, in real terms, it is now worth about a quarter less than it did a few years ago. We are asking that those who are not currently giving, will start giving for the first time, those who are giving already will review and increase their level of giving and that those who are not using the Parish Giving Scheme will switch to this method of giving going forward.
This a really exciting time for us as a Cathedral and through a successful campaign and the continued generosity of everyone who worships with us, we will be able to sustain and flourish in all we do. We will be guided in all of this by our new vision and these key areas:
Welcome & Compassion
Worship & Witness
Courage & Justice
Leadership & Service

Social Justice Group Working in Partnership
The Cathedral’s Vision for 2024 - 2029 affirms the call for us to be beacons of Christ’s message of justice for all. There are many ways in which we, as individuals and as a community, can respond to that call, but a key element is building partnerships to support those in need. The Social Justice group has been working to develop the Cathedral’s links with other groups and organisations locally and beyond and offer support. How will this be evident over the coming months?
• The Cathedral offers a place to bring people together. This year’s Community Showcase, to be held in the Nave on Saturday 12 October, will again provide the space and opportunity for a wide range of charities and other agencies to share their experiences and information about their work (see pages 8 and 9 for more details).
• We facilitate discussion and action on issues of concern. As part of our focus on housing and homelessness, we have links with the district council, Open Door, Centre 33 and others supporting those in housing need.
• On Wednesday 25 September, we are bringing together a group of partners for a workshop on housing strategy and solutions, with a view to collective action.
• We are engaging with other faith communities in the diocese. The Cathedral will be hosting a major inter-faith event on Monday 18 November which will highlight projects to support and strengthen community relations.
• We continue to support refugees and asylum seekers living in St Albans and to keep in touch with those who have moved away. Over the summer the asylum support group has arranged a variety of activities and outings for our friends and regular support sessions resume in September. The group has valuable links with other people and agencies in the community which are vital for sharing advice and information. And there are real difficulties over housing for those granted asylum, so liaison with the district council is essential in seeking solutions.

Children and Youth
Summer Camp 2024
It may seem like the summer should be a quieter time in the children and youth department, but we had an action packed start to the summer!
Our first ever Cathedral Summer Camp saw over 70 young people spend a week learning and having fun in and around the building. As well as tours organised by our own Steve (Education Officer) and the education department, we engaged a number of external organisations to provide activities for our young people.
We had an immersive day of hands on science, learned to drum (filling the Nave with music!), and yoga and cooking. On our final day, we had a trip out to the museum and came back to a fun-packed afternoon of bouncy castles and sports. We have had very encouraging and happy feedback from parents and the young people themselvesand feeling the place alive with children at the end of term was a great joy! Our thanks go to all the amazing volunteers who gave up their time to make the week such a success.
Over the summer, we continue to offer the children’s area in the Nave, as well as booklets for our young people to complete over the summer - wherever they worship. Abbey Tots and Abbey Tots service has taken a brief break and continues otherwise; other groups commence as usual in early September.
Upcoming groups, catered for young people of all ages:
Abbey Tots
Tuesdays, 10am, Offa Room
Come along to this popular parent and toddler group for pre-schoolers and their parents or carers.
Abbey Tots Service
Thursdays, 10am, St Michael Chapel
Our service for pre-school age children includes Bible stories, songs and prayers, as well as a snack and special meal.
A lively singing group with fun and varied music. This group is open to anyone who is enthusiastic about music.
In the autumn, we look forward to our first Messy Communion on Sunday 1 September to celebrate the start of term. This is followed by a bag blessing service on Sunday 8 September. Look out too for our Holy Pumpkin Trail at Hallowe’en and then the return of an old friend in December…

Community Showcase
Discover the Heart of Our Community at the St Albans Community Showcase
The Community Showcase 2024 is a unique gathering in the Cathedral that features over 50 charities and community organisations dedicated to making a difference in our local community.
It is a time to immerse yourself in the vibrant community spirit and gives you a chance to explore the diverse array of organisations contributing to our strong and caring community.
This is your chance to learn about the impactful work these groups are doing, from social justice initiatives to environmental conservation efforts.
It is also a great opportunity to discover how you can support and contribute to these worthy causes.
The St Albans Community Showcase is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of the compassionate individuals working tirelessly to improve the lives of others.
Images by Still Cast Photography
Last year we were joined by some incredible people and members of the community, including the Mayor, Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Robert Voss CBE CST J. and Daisy Cooper MP (pictured above).
With stands throughout the Nave, representatives from each organisation will be on hand to share their missions and stories. Engaging presentations and panel discussions will offer deeper insights into the critical issues they address and the positive change they foster.
This event is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to learn, get inspired, and make meaningful connections. Whether you’re passionate about social justice, environmental sustainability, or simply want to contribute to the community, there’s something here for you. Plus, it’s a perfect chance for the charities to gain visibility, to network, and recruit new volunteers.
This year’s showcase is on Saturday 12 October, 11am - 3pm. No charge for entry, donations welcome.
40th Anniversary of our Education Centre
Thousands of stories are held within the Cathedral walls.
From the legacy of St Alban, a Roman of Verulamium, to King Offa’s visions of the early Saxon monastery and church through to the magnificent Norman foundations of the current Cathedral building. We may see the marks of Tudor iconoclasm and the controversial conservation works of the Victorian era, too, throughout this building. These histories underpin all of the learning here.
Our celebrations will therefore take in the past 40 years that the Cathedral has pioneered in retelling these stories, being one of the first of few Cathedral’s to establish a Study Centre for adult learning and create a dedicated and award-winning Education Centre for schools to visit.
Over the past 40 years around half a million children have visited St Albans Cathedral, and we look forward to another 40 years of welcoming schools from across the diocese.
For the occasion, we are delighted to be joined by multi-million-copy selling, award-winning author, and former Children’s Laureate, Cressida Cowell (pictured left), creator of the How to Train Your Dragon and The Wizards of Once series. Cressida will introduce her newest book, Which Way Round the Galaxy, whilst delving into her inspirations and exploring the importance of imagination with schools from across the diocese.
Of those, we will be joined by fifteen of the original schools who visited us in 1984 and associates of the Spiral Partnership Trust, a community of five Hertfordshire primary schools working together to make a positive difference to children’s lives.
We are immensely grateful for the ongoing support of the Education Trust as well as the collaboration with the Spiral Partnership Trust for this event.
Elements of Faith
The Christian faith is a vibrant blend of story, belief, worship and lifestyle. In ‘Elements of Faith’ we will be exploring each of these dimensions in an informal, yet enlightening way. This isn’t your typical theology course; it’s a pilgrimage of heart and mind for those who are new to faith and want to find out more.
Lives are stories. So, we will be remembering the story of Alban and thinking about its relevance today. What shaped his life, and what shapes our lives and our stories? How did encountering Jesus Christ change the people that he met? Christianity is founded on key beliefs – especially beliefs about Jesus and his life, death and resurrection. So, we will be reflecting on the role that beliefs play in the life of the Church. Do beliefs matter? And are they true, or do we need a ‘leap of faith’? Have you ever wondered about the things we see and hear when we gather for worship?
And who are all those people up at the front? We will be examining the rhythms of our liturgy; especially the Eucharist – that meal of bread and wine which Jesus gave us.
Christians aren’t perfect. We are ordinary people stumbling our way towards God. But we have been given valuable resources to help us –prayer, the Bible, and God’s gracious forgiveness. So, how can we live our best lives, both now and in the future?
We will journey together as we eat, explore, question and learn. Because faith isn’t a puzzle to solve; it’s a story to live.

Lights, Camera, Action!
Celebrate Film This October
This October half term, we’re thrilled to announce a unique collaboration with the esteemed St Albans Film Festival. From Tuesday 29 October to Saturday 2 November, the longest Nave in England will transform into a captivating cinema space during The Alban Film Week.
This exciting event goes beyond just entertainment. It’s a fantastic opportunity to come together as a community, share our love for film, and experience the magic of storytelling in a truly awe-inspiring setting.
The light shows held every October aren’t gone for good, but we thought it was time for a change and wanted to do something a bit different this year.
The Alban Film Week promises a diverse program, featuring a carefully curated selection of films from an orchestra playing along to Peter and the Wolf to a Grease singa-long. You can also be transported back to the 1920s with a screening of Nosferatu in partnership with the International Organ Festival. Whether you’re drawn to animation or documentaries, classic comedies or thought-provoking dramas, there will be films to spark conversations, ignite imaginations, and leave a lasting impression.
We’re especially excited to be partnering with Aardman and Carrot Productions again (previously they screened The Snowman at the Cathedral) to host a live orchestra to a Wallace & Gromit film and will be running Gromit Model Making Workshops for all ages.
I particularly can’t wait to see the famous Johnny English scene in the actual location it was filmed in - the Nave of the Cathedral!
The festival extends beyond the screen with engaging events that will deepen people’s appreciation for film. Director of Four Weddings and a Funeral Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Donnie Brasco), will be running a Q&A session to offer a glimpse into the world of movie making. This session promises to be a treasure trove of knowledge for film enthusiasts of all levels.
The Alban Film Week is a testament to the exciting possibilities that arise through local collaboration. By joining forces with the St Albans Film Festival during their 10th anniversary year, we can create a truly special event, showcasing the power of film to connect and inspire.

New Chief Operating Officer
What brought you to St Albans?
Introducing our new Chief Operating Officer, Alan Hartwell.
Fr Will, Canon for Mission and Pastoral Care sat down with Alan ahead of his start date to find out more about his story and connection with the Cathedral.
Where did you spend your early life?
I suppose technically I am a cockney. I was born in Mile End within the sound of Bow Bells. I lived in London throughout my childhood. My father was a prison officer in tied accommodation and so we moved a lot but always in the Greater London area. My mum was a Christian and took me to church and encouraged my faith.
I got married to Nicola in 1995 and she was from Birmingham. I was in London so it was sort of between the two. We originally lived in London Colney but we moved to St Albans 8 years ago and I love it!
When did you start coming to the Cathedral?
Soon after moving 8 years ago. I attend the 8am which is quiet and reflective and I’ve also become a Cathedral guide which I hope to continue doing.
We’re delighted that you are our new COO. Why did you apply?
I saw it advertised in the Sunday notice sheet and I just knew I needed to apply. It felt like a nudge from God; an ideal new challenge at the right time.
What were you doing before?
I was previously COO of Capita but most recently the Chief Technology Officer for Iris, a business software company. Little known fact – about 1 in 6 people get paid via an Iris payroll system.
What does a COO do?
In brief, everything that everyone else doesn’t want to do! A COO is the glue for the tasks that sit across several departments, ensuring legal compliance, good management and stops anything falling through the cracks.
What principles of business are close to your heart?
People are your greatest asset so it is about equipping and empowering people to do a good job and treat them well.
It’s about the right people doing the right job in the right way at the right time.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I am a Gooner (Ed. – no comment!) I used to be a season ticket holder and still go occasionally. I also love comics. I grew up in the 1960s and love the action comics like Marvel. They’re all digital and online now rather than having huge piles of dusty copies.
We look forward to welcoming Alan on Monday 2 September.
Pet Blessing Service
All Creatures Great and Small Sunday 6 October, 3pm
All are welcome at this year’s Pet Blessing Service taking place in October.
Last year our clergy team blessed all kinds of creatures - from dogs and cats to tortoises, snakes and rabbits. We are hoping that this year we see some new and even bigger creatures! So, bring your pet along - large or small - for an informal service of hymns, prayers and blessing.
