ARE STAFF STILL YOUR GREATEST ASSET? This magazine includes a great quote from one of the biggest companies in the fixing world. It’s so good that I’m going to use it here too: Talking about fischer’s employees, company owner Prof Klaus Fischer says staff are “our company’s greatest asset and most crucial factor for success, rather than our facilities and buildings”. It’s not revolutionary stuff, but it does deserve dwelling on, coming as it does from the owner of a €1billion-plus company in this industry. It’s also worth connecting the dots between that view and the topic of attracting and retaining new talent into the industry. Prof Fischer is, I conjecture, using his words to not only tell the rest of the industry about the values of the company he owns, but also taking the opportunity to remind staff that he values them. A wise move given the difficulties in recruitment Europe-wide. We hear a lot about the way that automisation is being used to mitigate recruitment difficulties. It’s an interesting question – as your business becomes more automated, are staff still your greatest asset? Relationships appear to remain essential to business success, so the betting money is still on Prof Fischer’s view.

s 2023 draws to a close, we can look back on a year of record temperatures, melting glaciers and ice caps and extreme weather events. There can surely be no doubt that climate change is real and having a substantial impact on all of our lives. I am sure most of us have made personal changes over time which have reduced our own carbon footprints, be that household insulation, a more efficient car or installing solar panels. In our businesses, we see LED lighting, better insulation and a move to hybrid and electric vehicles. The UK has made good progress in reducing its carbon emissions over time, with the CO2 produced in the UK almost halving over the period 19902022. There have been enormous investments in wind and solar, which have resulted in the virtual elimination of coal-fired power stations and a reduction in reliance on other fossil fuels. However, laudable as this progress is, there is an elephant in the room which is directly relevant to our industry, and that is offshoring and embedded carbon. Over the same time period, in the UK at least, much manufacturing has been offshored, largely to China and other Far East countries. In fasteners, this is certainly true, a quick look at the import statistics will confirm it. Fastener manufacture, like many other metal industries, is an energy-intensive process. Taking the whole supply chain from ore extraction through smelting, wire drawing and transport from the Far East to Western markets, it is not unrealistic to consider that each tonne of steel fasteners has generated 3-4 tonnes of CO2 on the way. None of this carbon is reported in government statistics showing how well they are doing! In my own business, Owlett-Jaton, as part of our ISO14001 programme, we have been working to

identify, measure and reduce our own carbon emissions. We are very proud of our progress having reduced energy usage by over 30% over the past five years, but our usage represents less than 0.5% of the CO2 embedded in the products we sell! The EU, and probably in due course the UK, are trying to address this challenge with the introduction of the Carbon Border Adjustment Measure (CBAM), the first phase of which has already started. Until the end of 2025, CBAM is reporting only but will bring the scale of the importation of embedded carbon into the limelight. From 2026, the embedded carbon will be charged to importers, effectively an import tax, at the prevailing rate of carbon credits in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. It does not seem unreasonable to expect an increase to landed costs by 10-20%. I am sure many importers will feel this is deeply unfair, but I would argue it is not only right but necessary if carbon emissions are to be brought down. It is a sad but historically accurate observation that behaviour rarely changes for purely altruistic reasons, but when there is a cost attached behaviour does change. Whilst I do believe CBAM is heading in the right direction, charging for embedded CO2 and providing incentives for offshore manufacturers to become more carbon efficient, the implementation looks extremely daunting for those who have to report. There is a need to identify each step in the manufacturing process and have determined the carbon in each step. The processes are still being clarified, but it is clear that the reporting required will be very onerous, particularly for smaller companies. As they say, no gain without pain. CBAM will be painful from both a cost and administrative perspective, but it, or something equivalent, is, in my opinion, a necessary step on the road to net zero.

FASTENERS FOLLOW MEXICO PRODUCTION BOOM

T

he swathe of fastener businesses opening in Mexico as production in that country continues to grow has increased again, with Optimas declaring it will open a manu­ facturing facility in Monterrey, Mexico in H2 2024. The new facility will complement Optimas’ other plants, on the same continent in Wood Dale, IL and over the Atlantic in Droitwich Spa, UK. “More than ever, resource availability has given way to accessibility in the form of regionalisation,” said Daniel Harms, CEO of Americas. “Our expanding localisation strategy enables us to be more agile with our manufacturing and sourcing capabilities for industrial customers and suppliers.” “We took great care to design our Mexico facility to mirror our capabilities at our manufacturing operations in Wood Dale so they can effectively play off each other,” said Ricardo Alonzo

ACQUISITIONS CONTINUE IN THE TOOL AND FASTENER SECTORS

T

he latest spate of acquisitions are continuing as Insulated Tools has snapped up Classic Components and Huhn Group has taken over Teckentrup. Classic Components has joined Insulated Tools Ltd and expanded The Wardle Group’s reach, with Insulated Tools completing the acquisition of Classic Components’ assets and property in East Grinstead on 27 October 2023.

Insulated Tools Ltd (ITL) has purchased all the assets, plant, equipment, stock, customers and goodwill of Classic Components, as well as the property in which it operates. Malcolm Duffield, Classic Components MD, joins the family and will be very much part of the team, said the firm. Classic Components will continue to give to its customers domestic, commercial and industrial bespoke engineering services as part of Insulated Tools Ltd. Following the takeover of the Huhn Group by Berylls Equity Partners and the subsequent successful restructuring, the Huhn Group has expanded its range of services with the acquisition of Teckentrup. Teckentrup is a renowned tech­ nology leader in the embossing and fine blanking sector and will strategically complement the Huhn Group's existing product and production technology portfolio. The Heinrich Huhn Group is an automotive supplier in forming technology for metal parts. The products include chassis components and safety­relevant components from the areas of brakes, steering, assistance systems and trans­ missions. The product range of the new subsidiary ideally complements the product portfolio in the embossing and fine blanking sectors.

BHETA’s Member Services Team recruit

HETA has appointed Sally Gordon to its member services team. Her role will be to focus on member relationships and recruitment, and member services delivery. Sally will be liaising with suppliers, retailers, and business service providers across all the categories showcased at Exclu­ sively, namely housewares, small domestic electricals, and gift, as well as BHETA’s wider portfolio of DIY, home improvement and garden brands. Newcomer heading to NORMA Group

ORMA Group has appointed Sebastian Lehmann as its new Vice President Investor Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility. He will head the combined department from 1 January 2024, succeeding Andreas Trösch, who is leaving the company at the end of the year. Sebastian Lehmann joins NORMA Group from EDAG Engi­ neering Group AG, an engineering service provider for the global mobility industry. Sebastian Lehmann has headed the Investor Relations department there since 2016 and is also responsible for sustainability reporting. At NORMA Group, he will report to Chief Financial Officer Annette Stieve.

TINA HARO SIMPSON STRONG-TIE After ‘falling’ into the construction industry 17 years ago, Tina Haro has put her people skills to use, building relationships and providing solutions as the Senior National Builder Manager at Simpson Strong-Tie.

How did you get into the industry? After graduating from the University of Nevada Las Vegas, I was searching for a career utilising my Biology degree. I saw myself working in a research lab, in my own little quiet work­ place. I certainly didn't consider a career in sales, as I didn't see my personality fitting into that type of role. At the time, I was in the service industry and was looking for a long­term career but wasn’t finding any success. I had a friend who suggested I consider interviewing for a “builder rep” position for a paint manufacturer. I had no idea what that meant but thought why not? Like a lot of us who have found ourselves in the construction industry, I didn’t exactly pursue it but rather fell into it. It’s been such a rewarding industry, and I can’t imag­ ine ever leaving to pursue another one. What does your day-to-day job involve at Simpson Strong-Tie? As a National Builder Manager, I act as a liaison between Simp­ son Strong­Tie and our builder partners. My day­to­day includes presenting to builder leadership, negotiating builder programmes, walking jobsites, providing customer service, answering questions about products and services, and ulti­

mately providing solutions to help our builder partners achieve their initiatives. Additionally, I represent Simpson Strong­Tie at industry events, tradeshows and various associ­ ations, including the NAHB International Builders Show, Cali­ fornia Building Industry Association’s PCBC, Zonda’s Builder Connections and ExecutiveXchange to name a few. I’m also active in the NAHB Leading Supplier’s Council and Professional Women in Building. These councils help support the residen­ tial construction industry and my participation allows Simp­ son Strong­Tie to have a seat at the table. What are the biggest changes you have seen in the industry and Simpson Strong-Tie since you started? I’d say one of the biggest changes is certainly the number of women who have joined the construction industry. Compared to when I entered the industry 17 years ago, I see women represented in every aspect of the industry from manufactur­ ing, the trades and throughout the supply chain to name a few. Of course, there’s always room for more and I’m excited for what the future holds. I’ve also seen a lot more innovation and technology to support our business, as well as our builder, pro supply and trade partners.

Can you share some of your career highlights and milestones so far? One career highlight certainly was receiving the 2023 Top Women in Hardware & Building Supply Rising Stars Award. It was an incredible honour to be recognised amongst such an outstanding group of women. I appreciate being able to repre­ sent Simpson Strong­Tie as someone who is making an impact both within our organisation and throughout the industry.

// I now see women represented in every aspect of the industry from manufacturing, the trades and throughout the supply chain. // Joining Simpson Strong­Tie a short two years ago has also been a really rewarding experience. Being a leader on our builder team has helped me grow personally and professionally and allowed me some invaluable opportunities. This year, we at Simpson Strong­Tie wanted to highlight women in Residential Construction. We wanted to provide a platform for them to share their stories, challenges, successes, and demonstrate potential career paths. We recorded a “Women in Residential Construc­ tion” podcast. This is a Simpson Strong­Tie hosted podcast where

we invited women in the industry to lend their experience and expertise. It’s a three­part series (Women in Leadership, The Importance of Mentorship, The Future of Women in Residential Construction). Each episode includes a SST host and three indus­ try guests. The goal of the podcast is to inspire more women and girls to consider a career in the construction industry. What is your favourite thing about working with homebuilding partners? Building and developing relationships. I genuinely enjoy getting to know people. I don’t consider my position to be sales as that tends to be viewed as transactional, rather than delib­ erate and ongoing. It’s about long­term, strategic partnerships where the benefits are mutual. It takes time, experience and transparency to develop those authentic connections. I also enjoy providing solutions to help our builder partners achieve their initiatives, support their trade partners, and ultimately deliver a first­class experience for their homeowners. What do you think needs to be done to encourage more women to get involved in the building or hardware industry? Spread the word, share our stories, be a mentor, work with organ­ isations that empower women and girls to consider a career in the building industry. Listen and share our podcast series! You work with several associations and groups within your community, what do you see as the benefit of these associations to you professionally and personally? In my opinion, the benefits are endless. As with anything, you get out what you put in. Some of the advantages I’ve experienced include opportunities to network, find mentors, become a mentor, share stories of challenges and successes with others, make friends, lend your credibility, open doors, and ultimately represent your company as a leader in the industry. If you could go back in time and tell your younger self one piece of career advice, what would it be? “You got this, you made the right decision” when I decided to take that leap of faith into this industry. Looking back, it’s been an incredible ride, but it didn’t always feel that way in the moments that brought me to where I am today. There was a lot of second guessing, doubt, insecurity, and imposter syndrome along the way. Also, “Be kinder to yourself and own your accomplishments.” Any final thoughts? Thank you to Simpson Strong­Tie for elevating me and expos­ ing me to new opportunities. The renewal that represents the first chapter of a story waiting to be written Having inaugurated the new logistics hub, a new phase of renewal now begins, involving a broader, more modern and futuristic vision, consistent with the new company strategies

A

mbrovit, a leading player in hardware and fastening systems, has completed the expansion of its new logistics site. The hub is already fully operational and confirms the desire to further increase brand awareness in Italy and Europe. Logistics expansion becomes a reality The logistics hub in Garlasco occupies a total area of 24,000m2. The new PROXIMA warehouse is 104 metres long, 40 metres wide and 28 metres high. It is linked to the pre­existing ware­ house, ORION, thanks to a 26­metre­long connecting bridge, which ensures that product handling is as seamless as possi­ ble. A high­performance, technological project involving an automated system for storing palletised products and moni­ toring all operational flows. The new operational unit includes the pre­existing ORION warehouse, dedicated to receiving goods, while PROXIMA will handle all the shipment phases, with increased control, leading to a reduction in errors. The bridge that connects the two structures enables the transport of goods between the two, thus doubling the storage capacity. In both structures, in fact, there are “picking bays”, where operators can select goods from both pallets and trays.

Furthermore, the breadth of current storage capacities, including automated warehouses, operational and logistics units, today borders on 100,000 pallet places, ensuring prompt delivery in 24/48 hours and more than 2,500 tons shipped every month, with a view to constantly increasing customer satisfaction. Rebranding to communicate change The recent direction taken by the company has triggered a redesign of the logo, aimed at communicating the intention to increasingly focus on the future and on innovation, aspects that the company has always held dear, particularly in this newly inaugurated project.

Even the motto has been changed, using a slight but clever pun, that renews the historic message linked to the company's tradition and success and gives it a fresh, and less formal tone to adjust it to the new creative direction. And let us not forget the two protagonists of the most recent development, the automated warehouses, ORION and PROXIMA; they have a role to play in our communication and special names were devised for them, consistent with the new creative thought behind the logo. The Ambrovit restyling project, scheduled from 2023 to 2024, is only the first chapter of a global operation that will involve the image, communication and digital ecosystem of the brand. THE EFFICIENCY BOOSTING LINEWALK What worked for years does not change by itself. Over the years, companies often develop a certain “design blindness” regarding processes and products. This is exactly the time for a LineWalk, explains Keller & Kalmbach…

A

LineWalk can identify the maximum potential for cost savings – but how exactly? Roland Salomon, Head of Application Engineering & Tech­ nical Project Purchasing at Keller & Kalmbach, explains: “A LineWalk can be understood as a production audit. The devel­ opment and manufacturing of the product is accompanied from start to finish in order to identify optimisation potential at the level of the product itself, the mounting processes, the screw technology and the surfaces.” LineWalks can be used in assembly lines of manufacturing companies where standard products are produced, for example in the automotive industry, in mechanical engineering or in medi­ cal technology – but also in other types of production models. During the LineWalk, a concept with concrete suggestions for improvement will be created after an on­site visit by an expert. Not only the development department, but also purchasing and quality assurance are involved. In this way, both commercial aspects and weak points of the product can be evaluated from the beginning. The project team visits mounting station after mounting station and takes note of how the technician works. Potential cost savings can be achieved: at product level, e.g., through quantity effects and the use of standard parts. at process level, e.g., by reducing the product range. by minimising mounting times, e.g., by reducing tool changes. Specialists generate a profile for each of these options, on which the actual situation is compared with one or two proposed solu­ tions, supplemented by pictures or CAD drawings if necessary. The proposals are calculated, and the feasible cost savings are compared with the required investments. In addition, the experts note how their idea can change the mounting time and how long it will take to implement the proposed solutions. A LineWalk helps to be the decisive step ahead, to score through innovation and to differentiate from the competition. The following optimisations can result from this special production inspection: Standardisation of the product range: Fasteners are harmonised through a modular system which extends beyond development departments. In larger companies, many different designers usually work on one product; in the automotive indus­ try, for example, four different development departments are involved: They are responsible for the body, interior, engine and chassis. Coordination between them is not always optimal. There­ fore, it is not uncommon for a product to have a wide variety of different types of connecting parts. Reality shows: If one or the other type is replaced, the number of used bolt types can be reduced. However, such optimisations can only be identified if the product is looked at holistically. Not only process costs, but also mounting times can be reduced as a result of such a measure.

A linewalk is a form of production audit, taking in the process from start to finish Use of standard products: To avoid unnecessary expensive parts with special properties, the C­parts are precisely matched to the application. The C­parts area is still neglected in many companies. The product variety in this area is incredibly large, which often causes a lack of in­house know­how. Many compa­ nies already work with so­called “modular systems” or “preferred assortments”, which provide designers a selection of C­parts. This selection should be respected wherever possible. In practice, however, these methods are often not sufficient. Designers frequently want special solutions, e.g., in an “interme­ diate size” where a “standard” screw would also have been suffi­ cient. Special solutions are easy to manufacture, but they feed the product diversity in the company. Inclusion of A and B parts: A closer look at fasteners may also result in the use of less expensive A and B parts. If one fastener is replaced by another, the used C­part may become more expen­ sive. But it is often the case that while the screw becomes more expensive, the component itself can be manufactured at a lower cost. Often cast or bent parts are B­parts, and these are more expensive than the fastening technology itself. So, cost savings can be realised here as well. Therefore, it is also important for the purchasing department to be part of the LineWalk. To realise relevant cost savings, a purchase volume of approxi­ mately €50,000 or more should be spent on C­parts. The price per item of small parts is often in the cent range. In this context, the “hidden costs” or “total cost of ownership” are forgotten: In addition to the price per unit, process costs for ordering and logistics are decisive. For C­parts, these are usually higher by a multiple than the price per unit. Each C­part generates its own digital order number, and the process costs for managing such a product can run into four figures annually. If, on the other hand, the product range is reduced, the result is simplified structures in purchasing and logistics. erdinand Gross introduced the groundbreaking E­ Kanban solution, FALCON, which has received multiple awards and has become indispensable for many in modern C­parts management. Now, the company presents a revamped version that makes the tool even more mobile, attracting new user groups. With the web­based FALCON software, users can determine the exact location of each C­part in a matter of seconds, track the annual procurement volume of individual screws with just a few clicks, and even manage the entire kanban system from the comfort of their home office. Originally designed for purchasing departments, FALCON has now also established itself in other departments. “Our customers quickly realised that the information provided in FALCON can be of interest to many,” says Ralph Wittum, Sales Director at Ferdinand Gross. Quality assurance departments, for example, appreciate the document management feature for easily viewing and downloading inspection certificates and certificates for all C­parts. Dörken uses Vision Center’s 3D measuring technology A contactless, precise and digital measuring process can record different component surfaces, enabling optimal calculation of the amount of coating required for corrosion protection. The issue of sustainability is more important today than ever. This includes the most precise use of paint in the surface coating of parts and components to deliver corrosion protec­ tion. The corrosion experts at DÖRKEN in Herdecke also paid thought to this, with their attention drawn to the company Vision Center GmbH in Lüdenscheid. The Vision Center uses state­of­the­art 3D measuring technology and digital image processing to measure parts and components down to the µm. A new approach to technology A structured light projection process is used to accurately record the surface of the component. Although this technology is not wholly new, it is only in recent years that it has caught the interest of industry, as the capabilities of modern PC systems enable the relatively swift digitalisation of compo­ nents. But how does the scanning process work exactly? “A projection unit projects various patterns onto the part that is to be digitalised, with this then recorded by a camera system,” explains Dr. Ing. Sven Buhl, Managing Director at Vision Center GmbH. “The calibrated arrangement of projector and camera system is combined with the triangulation principle to calcu­ late the distance information of the object that is to be scanned. This means that complete 3D models can be calcu­ lated using different angles to the object.”

“We wanted to use screws for the first attempts at measure­ ment,” says Christos Tselebidis, Vice President Industrial Coatings. “However, it is very interesting for us to note that this process can be used to record and digitalise components ranging from just a few centimetres in size to around 300 mm. Wishbones, wheel bearings, large pins – there would be no limits.” The Vision Center can even use the laser scanning process to digitalise components of up to around 5m. “We have found a solution to record even very small details, such as a fine thread, although this brings us to the boundaries of resolution for this system,” says Buhl. “In this case the surface of the component could be recorded through a cylin­ der to keep deviations from the actual surface to a minimum.” The advantages of the measuring technology and digitalisation are clear: the fact that it is a contactless optical procedure means that no reference marks need to be applied to the object. Despite this, the digitalisation of the component can be undertaken rela­ tively quickly, enabling surfaces and volumes to be calculated simply using modern software tools. “The joint experiments were highly relevant for us, as the measurement technology enables us to make a precise calculation of coating quantities and conse­ quently make our coaters even more capable and professional,” says Tselebidis. “A further major advantage is the fact that the component scans can be conducted by the customer on site using hand­held laser scanners. This means we can give a faster esti­ mation of required coating quantities and tanks, for example.” www.doerken.com

These coatings not only help protect against corrosion, but also improve the aesthetic appearance and offer numerous other advantages. Fasteners without coatings tend to rust more quickly, which can affect their service life. Various types of surface coatings exist, and their strength in corrosion protection and additional benefits varies depending on the type of coating. For example, there are fasteners that are hot­dip galvanised, electrogalvanised or have a zinc flake coating. Electrogalvanising is the most common process, in which zinc is applied to the fasteners through an electrolyte bath. A thicker coating provides better protection against corrosion. When used outdoors and under various weather conditions, a special coat­ ing is required. Hot­dip galvanised fasteners are bathed in molten zinc and provide significantly greater corrosion protec­ tion compared to electrogalvanising. Zinc flake coating offers good corrosion protection, especially at higher temperatures, and consists of zinc and aluminium flakes. This coating is addi­ tionally resistant to chemicals and has good friction properties. Mungo Befestigungstechnik AG offers its own GreenTec® coat­ ing for two products in its range, namely for the steel bolts m1 PowerGrip and m2 in all design types. A WINNING START FOR KOHLHAGE MEXICO

KOHLHAGE Mexico opened production in 2021. CEO Tim Höffner tells Torque Magazine about the challenges and spectacular early wins the business has achieved so far... How is business compared with pre-Covid times? Business is good, but it has changed. KOHLHAGE Fasteners and Mexico are traders and as such life has become much harder after Covid. Customers have become more price­sensitive and, understandably, want to save money. There is an active search for manufacturers and favourable options. You must be able to keep up and as a somewhat larger company in this sector, it is sometimes difficult to compete with other smaller companies with the prices. Of course, the aftermath of Covid is still hurt­ ing; disrupted supply chains worldwide, the changed situation regarding Taiwan, etc. After Covid, everything has become more fast­moving; of course, political influence is not innocent. New models come along; old ones fall away faster. Our busi­ ness model, which is based primarily on stability, is naturally more difficult to maintain here. Clients want a high degree of flexibility and don’t want to focus on one thing. Nevertheless, we try to do everything we can for our customers. You opened production in Mexico in 2021 – what prompted that move and how is that going so far? The start of KOHLHAGE Mexico was fundamentally first brought about by the request of several customers. The production of the Audi Q5 was moved to Mexico at that time. KOHLHAGE Fasteners supplied parts for this model and the customers wanted their supplier to go there and supply the customers in Mexico directly. In 2019, the final decision was made to move to Mexico. So much for the start. However, we were not able to make the first deliveries until mid­2022. The way things are going so far could never have been dreamed of in any business plan. After we were able to win Tesla as a customer and thus achieve a turnover of over one million dollars in the first active business year, the company only continued to grow, and turnover doubled in the second busi­ ness year. This is an insanely drastic development that we could only dream of, and which still seems incredible. Kohlhage has production facilities in Asia and Europe (as well as Mexico) – has that helped you handle those recent supply chain challenges? Yes, that helped a lot. We have not only been limited by it. We could and can be much more flexible and offer many special solutions for our customers.

It sounds like special/custom parts and consulting are core to Kohlhage – is that fair to say? Yes, absolutely. Our focus is on customised and customer­ specific solutions, not on catalogue parts. Automotive seems to be a major market for you, what are your other main markets? That is true. The automotive sector is indeed our main market, almost 90% of the parts are automotive. However, we are also active in the construction and furniture industry, but that is still a very small share. Are you seeing any particular key trends in the major industries you operate in, such as automotive, that you can share with our readers? For us, this is clearly electrification in the automotive industry, which is why we also founded KOHLHAGE E­Tech in 2018. With this company, we produce, for example, aggregate frames, i.e., battery carriers. However, the increase in electric cars also means that more plastic is being used in cars, and this must be fixed somewhere in the car somehow. This is where our KOHLHAGE Fasteners come into play again and are involved. This means we can also serve the expanded market in this sector. What’s coming up next for KOHLHAGE Mexico? Due to the rapid growth already mentioned, we want to follow suit with the structures. The next main challenge will probably be the upcoming certification. Another wish is to expand to the USA. This is mainly for pragmatic reasons: contrary to our original expectations, we have experienced enormous growth in the USA compared to Mexico and we want to further expand this growth and be there for our customers. What would you say to companies who have not yet worked with KOHLHAGE but are considering it? As simple as it sounds, but test us! Send us your request and we’ll see what we can do for you. Plastic Thermoforming Fabrication Equipment Manufacturer, South Wales The manufacturer was experiencing high levels of re­work whilst using hexagon and round rivet bushes installed by hand press. JRP successfully trialled and converted the fasteners used to reduced head steel rivet nuts, combined with the NB80A battery installation tool. The result was a faster and more consistent fixing system. With a rivet bush, if there is a fault with the thread this wouldn’t be picked up until final assembly. This can then cause further issues later down the line, which can be time­consum­ ing and costly to rectify. Contrastingly, when installing rivet nuts, the nut is threaded onto the tool before assembly. This means any thread faults will be picked up quicker and before installation, as they won’t go onto the tool, eliminating any re­work costs that may occur. With the high quality standards of the JRP products this prob­ ability is virtually zero. The result of the trial was that even though a rivet nut cost per piece was higher, and there was an initial outlay for new tooling, the capex costs were soon recovered with significant savings in production times.

GRP Mouldings Fabricator, East Anglia Reducing inventory is always a benefit for manufacturers, especially when it reduces errors and improves efficiency. The manufacturer was using two sizes of standard open rivets from an alternative brand. They were having stopped production assembly issues due to the operators using the wrong rivet for the material thickness. This in turn caused the rivet to fail, creating wastage in terms of time, re­work costs and material loss. The JRP technical team identified that the customer did not require two sizes of rivets. Just one JRP aluminium/steel dome head multigrip rivet covering the grip range would suffice. In addition, the JRP RB65 tool replaced their existing battery rivet tool to save time and weight. he Radisson Blu Hotel in Frankfurt was the setting for a highly organised and efficient FLEXperience 2023. Run over five days, an international audience of FLEX agents, dealers, stockists and even a humble journalist like me, were treated to detailed expositions of the wide range of FLEX products by the expert product managers of all the FLEX categories of tools. The rolling programme of events saw participants arriving in staggered batches that enabled them to see all the categories in groups small enough to allow for ‘hands­on time’ and detailed questions.

Even the ‘off’ time was able to subtly reinforce the FLEX message. For example, the evening dinner was introduced by Christian Neuner, CEO. He introduced Ralf Hafaele, Chief Sales Officer, who guided us through the FLEX range and message with the help of some very skilful drumming and acrobatics – between courses I hasten to add. Nevertheless, the FLEX Proformance agenda was highlighted – end users should look forward to many more cordless and corded tools in the FLEX range before too long. // FLEX has a comprehensive range of tools, a very good battery and charger system and a network of dealers and agents. // bringing lead times for UK dealers in line with the market, this will be paired with a central warrantee and technical service from 1 November 2023. But there was still some fun to be had. A chance to ‘lose your shirt’ at the pop­up casino – in reality it was a chance for ‘seri­ ous’ gamblers who topped the winnings lists to win a FLEX sweatshirt, while the rest of us frittered away our free 500 value chip in minutes at the roulette table. Great fun – and guilt­free. On day two, after a day being shown the various categories of FLEX tools and a chance of some ‘hands­on time’ with some of the tools an evening cruise and buffet meal on the River Main was a good chance to catch up with colleagues and acquaintances, hopefully to discuss the events of the day. If ever there was an enjoyable way of learning more about FLEX tools, this was it. On the tools roundabout FLEX has an enviable range of vacuums and dust extractors so it was no surprise that they featured heavily in the FLEX range. There is a good choice on offer, with smaller M­Class versions of established FLEX L­Class machines such as the VCE 22 M MC and a nifty portable vacuum, the VC 2 L MC Hip that is carried on the user’s waist and can be used as a vacuum or dust extrac­ tor when attached to a cordless tool like a sander or saw. Drilling – a core range Drilling is another area where FLEX has pulled out all the stops to upgrade its already comprehensive range. Using the stan­ dard 18v battery packs, available in 2.5Ah, 5Ah or a chunky 8Ah, the drills are designed to suit the needs of end users. Not everyone needs to carry 8Ah of oomph on their belt all day! Chunky SDS Max drills such as the CHE 2­26 18.0­EC for concrete anchors are the top end of capacity – I had some fun seeing how efficient they were at drilling into dense concrete blocks. Impact wrenches are big these days too and FLEX has a few

such as the IW ½” 750 18.0­EC and the IW ½” 950­EC. Perhaps the most interesting thing about these is the way in which FLEX has futureproofed some of them by decoupling the vibrating elements of the tool from the handle and body. A system that no other manufacturer so far has been able to match. Sanding and polishing FLEX has a long history of expertise in sanding and polishing – even the FLEX 150 random orbit sander I tested ten years ago still works well and with minimal vibration. But with new Euro­ pean legislation focusing on dust exposure and extraction, as well as vibration, FLEX has brought to market a range of corded and cordless sanders. To name but a few – look out for the ORE 2­125 EC and the ODE 2­100 EC Sanding can be a chore, even a chore that brings tingles to your hands if you are not careful. The latest range of FLEX sanders encompass a lovely 150mm diameter machine, ORE 5­ 150 EC that has the second lowest vibration reading in the world in that class. The dust extraction is first class too, with or without powered dust extraction, and there are of course a range of smaller cordless sanders that provide enough oomph and efficiency for smaller jobs. Sawing – Jigsaws, Plunge Saws and Circular Saws I have already tested the FLEX 18v cordless mitre saw (the SMS 190 18.0­EC), and I commented on how light and easy to handle it is, with super­smooth cuts leaving an almost planed finish. GRABO one of these quick Somewhat out of sight out of mind, the FLEX GRABO, VLP 18.0 Grabo, coming very soon, is a cordless vacuum powered lifter. It seems to work as well on paving stones as it does on smoothest glass, due to the rings of harder and softer material on the vacuum surface. The demonstrator proved the point by sticking a staggered row of GRABOS on the wall and climbing

up them to deliver a short chat on the virtues of the product. I suspect it is one of those interesting tools that end users will find more and more uses for once they have bought one. Lights on the subject We are used to the small FLEX compact site lights, but the newer ones such as the TL 4000 18.0/230 are even more useful. I liked the tall tripod mounted light that was extremely versatile in its ability to light up a range of situations. FLEX is rightly well known for its 100­year history of producing polishers and grinders for the automotive industry the portfolio of the corded and cordless rotary, DA and forced rotation machines provides comprehensive range trusted and used by the detailing trades all over the world. Come into the garden... Cordless and gardening are two things we thought would never appear in the same sentence, but the forthcoming Q1 2024 garden products from FLEX are well paired up with various combinations of the standard 18V battery packs. I had great fun with the Garden Blower that is so powerful that you can feel the blow force on your hand when you switch it on. Dead leaves in autumn? No problem. The line trimmer was another innovative product. It cut well enough to have a role even in a medium­sized garden, and also had a nice neat and quick way of reloading the line once it was used up. Forget grass mulch on your fingers – the new system is a great idea. I have long since made the transition to electric chainsawing and the FLEX 36v chainsaw is a valuable addition. It cut effort­ lessly through a 200mm diameter log without all the noise and smoke of a two­stroke version. All the Angles Angle grinders are a FLEX strong suit. I love my old cordless

FLEX grinder because of its great ergonomics and power. The newer ones like the LE 15­11 125 have been developed further and are definitely worth a look. Other FLEX metalworking tools are the cordless bandsaw, the DGE 25 18.0­EC die grinder, the metal polishers, the belt file and the burnisher. In a clever bit of marketing FLEX has given end­users the choice of buying a box of three of these tools in different combinations – they share one battery pack to share­and save money. I had a good hands­on with the bandsaw and the nibbler and my abiding impression was just how well these tools worked. They felt so controlled and easy to use – and that inspires confi­ dence for end users. And finally... the Stack Pack A load of tools needs a good home and the new FLEX Stack Pack TK­L SP Kit 1 is a chunky, versatile and practical way of provid­ ing one. With its big wheels it is easier to move on all surfaces, and the robust handle design allows easier handling as well as being able to fold away when needed. Accessories and tools like a spirit level can also be accommodated within the design. Not all storage systems provide the recognition that users don’t just carry one brand of tools with them… The Proformance agenda. There is no doubt that FLEX is on the move. The range of FLEX tools in the USA is already garnering great reviews and increas­ ing market share with good value, robust and capable tools in several market sectors. A POWER-FUL ALLIANCE Having access to a reliable stream of batteries that feature the latest technology is one key draw for power tools companies joining the Cordless Alliance System. The alliance makes life easier not just for tool users, but specifically for specialist trades who use specialist power tools. Torque Magazine speaks with Thomas Zeller, head of the CAS partner programme… The Cordless Alliance System is a powerful battery pack system that allows different power tool brands to use the same batteries. The advantages are numerous but perhaps most crucial of all is that it makes the life of the end user much simpler. The explosion in cordless power tools has also led to a rather less welcome explosion in peripheral accessories, namely various battery chargers, numerous spare batteries, battery carriers… all taking up valuable space and multiplying the potential for confusion – for instance taking the wrong spare battery and charger to a job site. Being able to use the same battery pack and charger across numerous brands saves time, frustration and space for profes­ sionals. And they’re not just any old batteries, either, they come with a pedigree, hailing from Metabo and using battery tech­ nology that has been developed over decades. Thomas Zeller is head of the CAS partner programme, lead­ ing the growth of the number of brands using the battery shar­ ing technology. Having also been in the industry for its last battery revolution – the switch to lithium­ion in the early ‘00s – Zeller is steeped in the power tool sector and has remained awed by the pace of change that has continued since those early days. He tells Torque Magazine: “It was amazing to see what was happening over that time, I wouldn’t have imagined that the technology not only on the battery side but also on the tool side is still going forward at such speed.” And that rate of change is not about to let up, he argues: “There’s a big conversion going on still from corded to cord­ less, especially tools which are more power demanding like circular saws. There’s still a chunk of products which are between 1,300 Watts up to 1,900 Watts and from the battery perspective are not yet ready to be replaced from the corded tools, but there will be developments on the battery side which will make that possible. The regular batteries will get tougher and more powerful and will open up that range of products which are still to be covered.”

The CAS network Starting with nine brands in 2018, the CAS network now features 38 tool brands using the same battery. “We have a mailbox on our website where you can contact us and 70% of enquiries are about becoming a member of CAS,” Zeller explains. The screening process covers a lot of areas, he adds: “Some companies are too far from our target groups. Other brands we talk with to see how they fit and what value they could bring to CAS. Then we have to understand the scale of the business… The pipeline for the future is larger than more than we can actually keep up with.” The journey of joining CAS from first contact to completion can take anything from nine months to three years or more. “It’s a process. I would love it if every brand was using CAS! But the race started many years ago, brands like ours, Makita, Milwau­ kee… have their own microcosmos. You can connect the tools to a battery system, then the customer understands they don’t need any more batteries – they already have more than enough. “They see the benefit, because they have less investment, they have less batteries, they use the batteries they have much better. It’s also more environmentally friendly. “But if you stay with a system where there is one brand, you are bound to that company. With CAS, we have companies that are specialised in areas, rather than providing standard tools like drills, saws and so on. The end user has particular needs for pipe installation, for example. Or for a rivet gun. Those special brands for users in special trades… end users want to use that quality tool but they don’t want to buy lots of different batteries which are not compatible. So, it’s better to have a shared platform. “For CAS end users there is a double freedom. It’s not only that you are freed from the cord, you’re also free to buy from the brand that appeals to you. It’s totally open, it’s a true open platform. The only thing we really care about is that companies coming in have a certain position on the market, that they are well known, that they are good quality or they are innovative

– not necessarily a big company. But it should be one which is meaningful to the end user, which gives the whole CAS portfo­ lio a certain value so that people understand CAS is for profes­ sional people.” Explaining benefits to end users There’s certainly a growing emphasis on conveying this message to the end user from within the CAS team. “What we really do now is make it more visible for the end user,” Zeller elaborates: “When you start building up brands or technologies there’s a ramp up phase. We are already in progress, but there’s still room to the top. You can compare it to the introduction of lithium­ion batteries, which came to the market in the 2000s on a bigger scale. It was fantastic, they didn’t lose their charge, they can be smaller and lighter, with more power…We expect the craftsmen to get it and understand the benefit of this new battery technology after one or two years. But I had interviews with end users five years after its introduction and they said they still have some doubts. Could they really count on this lithium­ion technology? You see what time it takes to get to a level that people really accept and understand it? It’s a massive process.” Zeller says the pace of battery innovation also works the other way, with companies potentially struggling to adapt: “Companies want to develop their applications, they don’t want to invest into battery technologies every three or four years. here in Europe. There’s a big supply chain running, we always have the batteries in place, at the right time and where they are needed. With this stream of batteries, it’s very easy for us to have a share for our partners always available. And this is something that was really a big change for the partners, because they now have the reliability.” As CAS edges ever closer towards that magical ‘50 brands’ milestone, the team is looking at the bigger picture too. There is an awareness that CAS might sound “like a German thing” – naturally for a project conceived in that country, but its acqui­ sition focus goes out to all countries of Europe, as well as the US, where it already has partners. “When we talk about how many tools are part of the CAS network, they are not tools that are coming to the market, they are available now, from brands which are really active, they aren’t in development phase.” Relatable size Metabo is no small deal in business terms, but it’s also not so large that it is remote from the kind of businesses that are seeking to join CAS. “We’re talking to midsize companies inter­ ested in joining CAS. Maybe it’s a company that is owned by the founder… they love to talk to us because they understand that we are we are Metabo people, you can we are typically southern Germany people you can catch up with, on a personal level… we understand how they talk. We talk on the same level and we’re really open. Atlas Copco, Gesipa and Honsel reveal some of the technology and tool developments they have been working on. Atlas Copco launches battery drill for aerospace manufacturing > Atlas Copco has launched a battery drill designed to meet the needs of aerospace manufacturing. The EBB16 replaces the need for ten different airframe tools and was specifically developed to further improve quality and productivity on the aircraft assem­ bly line, whilst also reducing instances of operator injury. According to industry research carried out by Atlas Copco, 35% of holes required in airframe construction are drilled using handheld tools, which account for up to 65% of the assembly cost. In addition, the drilling process was found to be the cause of around 85% of quality issues and 80% of lost operator time, due to injuries sustained from legacy tooling. Atlas Copco’s EBB16 cordless drill has been researched and designed to counter these issues, with ergonomics, safety and usability enabling users to drill more identical holes, more accu­ rately and more safely. Weighing just over 1kg, the compact­sized cordless EBB16 is powered by a Lithium­ion battery, which features a double battery position that enables operators to access tighter locations within the airframe, as well as working with less restriction. Featuring ten drilling programmes, ranging from 500 – 5,500rpm, selected via a user­friendly interface (HMI), the EBB16 replaces the need for ten tools with just one, for a leaner and more cost­efficient assembly line. Selectable programmes ensure the correct cutter speed for specific mate­ rials, thereby reducing the risk of drilling oversized holes and

a reversible option enables the back­out of drill bits in the event of a jam. Operator feedback includes a cutter usage indi­ cator and service information via the HMI, while Wi­Fi­based tethering can also be provided to prevent tool usage outside a specific assembly area. Available in two models, Standard and Plus, for specific airframe tasks, EBB16 is managed with Atlas Copco’s bespoke ToolsTalkService2 software for torque programming and trace­ ability analysis. Carried out by certified technicians, Atlas Copco’s EasyStart installation and user training service is provided, as well as maintenance plans to ensure consistent and accurate drilling performance. Gesipa – Focus on sustainability and compressed air > The situation – Compressed air is a valuable commodity Compressed air is necessary in many applications to be able to deliver the required performance and thus its use is often unavoidable. What is unfavourable is that in the end, in most compressed air systems, less than 15% of the electrical energy used is actually available as useful energy in the form of compressed air in the respective application. Looked at the other way round, about 85% of the energy used is lost. At the same time, compressed air is a valuable energy, because it is generated at great expense. Starting with the creation of the necessary infrastructure, the costs for electrical energy via the maintenance costs. Every leakage and thus the unintentional loss of already produced compressed air from lines and connections costs money. The project – Improved efficiency for the automatic processing of blind rivets It was worth putting the proven and reliable GAV, which is in use in many small and large industrial companies worldwide, through its paces to find possible savings. The result – Improved technology Through numerous system modifications and the resulting adapted set­up, the air consumption could be reduced by up to 24%. Despite the reduced compressed air requirement, the perfor­ mance of the GAV could even be increased under certain conditions. Considerable progress was also made around residual mandrel disposal with the GAV Facelift. These modifications have created a significantly stronger vacuum, which, among other things, also makes it possible to increase the previous maximum length of the hose package from 5m to up to 8m. The tournament fostered cama­ raderie among industry professionals, setting the tone for the productive days to come. The Welcome Reception at Mandalay Bay’s Daylight Pool, held on the eve of the expo floor opening, brought over 1,000 fastener professionals out for a night of great networking, drinks and dancing and some warm Las Vegas weather. Pool­ side cabanas housed gatherings of industry associations, Hall of Fame and Young Fastener Professional of the Year inductees and the always popular cigar rolling. Welcome Reception sponsors included B&D Cold Headed Products, Continental Aero and Parker Fasteners. The expo floor was a hive of activity, featuring over 100 first time exhibitors and 700 exhibitors in total showcasing the latest products, services and technologies in the fastener industry. Attendees had the opportunity to explore and see first­hand the cutting­edge solutions available, engage with suppliers and discover new market opportunities. The ener­ getic atmosphere reflected the enthusiasm and forward­think­ ing that defines the fastener industry, said the organiser. One of the standout features of the 2023 International Fastener Expo was its extensive educational programme. The Expo Hall opened its doors early for a keynote presentation led by Jake Hall, the Manufacturing Millennial, that dove into the future of manufacturing, touching on topics like automation and the new workforce. Industry experts led informative sessions, a full­day training from FTI and fireside chats on a wide array of subject matter, including innovation in fastener technology, industry trends and best practices. The wide range of educa­ tional opportunities ensured that attendees could customise

Growermetal has been a manufacturer in the fastener sector since 1950, working to enhance its production of washers and parts, to guarantee superior safety and high performance. Among the treatments available, the company’s mechanical zinc plating (certified according to the automotive standard FCA PS.50042 – Edition 11/2015) stands out for the quality of the coating provided on the washers’ range and on behalf of customers on their products. Its range of fastening solutions for automotive includes: Flat captive washers for screws and nuts: these washers are a versatile option for broader uses, making them the most common type of washer. Located under the head of the bolt or

Ribbed flat washers: available with radial ribs and serration on one or both surfaces, ribbed flat washers are used in the auto­ motive industry with soft­bearing surfaces such as aluminium and plastic. They are used for bolted joint connections in appli­ cations such as car body, engine, gear­box and others, with teeth locking the washer on the bearing surface during tightening and preventing the screw from damaging it. Conical elastic washers for screws and nuts: these washers prevent the loosening of assemblies through the combination of the elastic compensation of expansion and contraction with the elimination of play. Designed to accommodate static loads, these products are ideal for applications requiring low vibration resis­ tance and parts supporting temperature variation. Eccentric washers: widely used in the car and van suspension systems. The hexagonal­hole washer is mounted and blocked on the underhead of the screw, while the counter washer is mounted in the two grooves of the bolt’s threaded part by the OEM during the assembling process of the car. Crown lock-washers for shaft: with their great ease of use and affordability, crown lock­washers for shafts are ideal for the many applications where it is necessary to position and securely retain a bolt or screw until a nut is applied at a later stage to complete the assembly. When a nut is applied and tightened, the teeth on the retainer set up a strut action that resists any loos­ ening or back­off rotation. Corrugated elastic washers: availability of two different versions, according to the material and type of application: corrugated elastic washers are ideal for soft materials like copper, aluminum and plastic, while corrugated elastic damping washers compensate for axial play of a component. The objective of these parts is to reduce the risk of disassembly and compen­ sate misalignment, providing slight to moderate spring forces. Cup washers and washers with special geometries: cup washers are normally preassembled to nuts prior the use by the automotive OEM. So, the phrasing often gets applied somewhat by default in advertising and communication activities, occasionally with­ out tangible efforts or actions behind it. However, in certain sectors like the building and construction industry, with prod­ ucts and components carrying the CE marking, quality is veri­ fied through rigorous processes and protocols. Constructors and manufacturers can be rest assured that using CE­marked prod­ ucts means they reach more than satisfactory quality standards. The way to guarantee desired levels of quality in CE­marked products goes through a Declaration of Performance. This is a “document that provides information on the performance of a construction product”, as stated by the European Commission. To obtain the CE marking for construction products, manufac­ turers need to have a Declaration of Performance in place. To ensure that the Declaration of Performance is legitimate, reliable, and accurate, the EU uses AVCP (The Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance). For standardised products, manufacturers can monitor and declare the quality performance of their products themselves. But for components like Nord­Lock wedge­locking washers, another more exten­ sive system is applied. Washers assessed by independent expertise The AVCP system implemented by Nord­Lock for their wedge­ locking washers involves third­party involvement, meaning that the Declaration of Performance is audited and verified once a year by independent and notified assessors.

he automotive world is undergoing important changes due to various factors, including the pandemic and the low availability of skilled labour. There has also been supply problems due to “logistic disruption” resulting in dramatic increased costs. We’ve also seen the trend towards so­called reshoring, i.e. shortening of the supply chain due to geopolitical and, as mentioned, supply problems, calling into question the consolidated concept of globalisation. And there’s also been growing understanding towards environmental issues.

Industry 4.0 and new automotive technologies As a result of the above, industry is moving faster and faster toward process automation and process control, both for what concerns qualitative analysis and predictive analysis, thanks to the new AI­based technologies. Rivit’s offering fits right into this context thanks to the supply of essential components for the transformation/assembly of the product, through a variety of fastening solutions. It is a perfect device for system integrators who have to develop their own automation solution to meet the needs of automotive customers, whether the end user (vehicle assembly), or a supplier of semi­finished products; The latter including manufacturers of frames and battery pack containers, essential elements for the construc­ tion of hybrid or 100% electric vehicles. Should you prefer a fastening solution for an operator performing the work himself, the most appropriate product is the RIV949, a hydro­pneumatic tool for applications of rivet nuts from M3 up to M12, featuring a force, in the standard version, up to 23.5 KN. RIV949 can be widely customised and it satisfies every application need: it comes also with the presetting for use with robots and cobots. Both RIV603 and RIV949 can be connected to Rivit CONTROLRIV 4.0, a device that monitors the continuity and good quality of the fastening by comparing in real time with a “benchmark” curve that detects the time course of pressure during the placing phase. Thanks to this comparison, the CONTROLRIV ensures in­line process control, notifying an incorrect operation through digital outputs and/or through error messages to the Host. Henkel acquires specialised supplier Critica Infrastructure >

Henkel has acquired the US­based Critica Infrastructure, a specialised supplier of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) composite solutions for critical infrastructure such as oil and gas transmission as well as municipal water supply systems. Critica is active in many countries with a strong focus on North America and is expected to reach sales of around €100 million in 2023. With ageing infrastructure and the increasing relevance of sustainability, demand for repair solutions that extend asset life is gaining importance. Therefore, maintenance and repair solu­ tions for industrial and municipal applications are becoming increasingly significant. While Henkel has been expanding its portfolio for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) solutions over the past years, the acquisition of this adjacent business

adds a large, innovative and certified portfolio of composite repair and reinforcement products for the industrial and munic­ ipal infrastructure market. “As part of our strategic growth agenda, compelling acqui­ sitions play a key role in actively shaping our portfolio. ENLARGING PRODUCTION LINES Arma Fixing Systems has enlarged its clamping production line with new investments, and with plans for a new production facility it is increasing its Turkish Manufacturing operations.

A

RMA FIXING SYSTEMS was estab­ lished in 1980 as a tooling work­ shop, and it continues to serve its customers in various sectors mainly auto­ motive and white goods as well as machinery, agriculture, defence, maritime, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and construction with a total closed area of 7,000 m2. The company’s product portfolio consists of fixing clamps, hose clamps, locking type pre­positioned clamps, ear clamps, rubber lined clamps, metal clips, cage nuts, metal brackets, metal compo­ nents, plastic clips and other plastic fasteners. With its strong R&D and mould­ ing staff, the ability to design new moulds, gauges, apparatus and machines accord­ ing to customer drawings is one of the biggest advantages of the company. One of the main strategies of ARMA FIXING SYSTEMS is offering new product alternatives to its customers. There is significant progress in both the production and sales of two products in clamping section. Locking type clamps, which are used on fluid management systems in the automotive sector and provide the opera­ tor with the opportunity to pre­position before installation, are in high demand from global Tier­1 companies. Thanks to the locking feature, which is patented by ARMA, the clamp is fixed in the desired position and the adjustment time in the assembly line is eliminated. The number of projects in mass production related to this clamp is increasing day­by­day. For prod­ ucts with different bandwidths, the new mould system has taken its place in the production line. With the newly commis­ sioned automatic production lines, total production capacity has tripled. Serial production continues also for the new type of hose clamp product, which is used in the white goods sector. R&D team designed two different automatic produc­ tion lines supported by a camera control

system. This clamp, which stands out with its impermeability feature, has success­ fully passed all the tests applied by global OEM customers. The company’s aim is to gradually quadruple the amount of production by the end of 2024. Patent applications for two different automatic production systems regarding fixing clamps have been completed. Also, utility model and overseas design regis­ tration applications have been made for a new locking system for the locking type clamp product. ARMA FIXING SYSTEMS exports 47% of its production to more than 40 countries worldwide including North America, South America, Asia and Europe. The company aims to increase its market share in the UK, France and the USA. With new investments in the near future, ARMA will continue to develop its produc­ tion line. The company is planning to purchase two eccentric presses of 45 tons with air clutch system for the press shop, three plastic injection machines with 150

tons capacity for the production of plastic fasteners, CNC vertical machining centre for the tooling shop, two automatic metal form­ ing machines for serial production depart­ ment and two automatic assembly line for clamping products section. In addition, ARMA FIXING SYSTEMS plans to obtain its certificates by completing the necessary preparations for ISO 45001 and ISO 27001 management systems. As part of ARMA sustainability studies, fact finding report was conducted by a consultant company. As of the end of 2023, it is planned to close all determined actions and make an Ecovadis application. By successfully completing the environ­ mental management system studies, the company was entitled to renew ISO 14001 certificate and to receive Zero Waste Certificate. ARMA has saved 30,000 KW annually by converting LEDs in its lighting systems. The electricity supply company has also been changed and switched to renewable energy use. In addition to these, ARMA continues to follow the project studies for a new production facility that will have a closed area of 17,000 m2 in Kapaklı/Tekirdağ. This is how the 6th edition of the International Trade Fair of Fasteners and Fixing Technologies FASTENER POLAND® looked. Exhibitors and visi­ tors leaving EXPO Kraków after the trade fair commented very positively about it, said the show organisers, with Torque’s own visiting contingent also confirming the show as a worthwhile endeavour. Visitors paid attention primarily to specific and substantive conversations and the high business potential of the FASTENER POLAND Trade Fair.

Overseas significance The signs were good even before the doors opened to the show: 150 produc­ ers and distributors from 15 countries presented their offers, including 77% of exhibitors from abroad. The statistics regarding visitors are even more inter­ esting: Of the 3,258 people who visited the fair, 45% were from abroad, from 42 countries. Most visitors came to the fair from Italy, the Czech Republic and Ukraine, but there were also guests from rather more distant countries such as India, Taiwan, Brazil and China. The international business atmosphere was visible every step of the way in the halls of EXPO Kraków.

A novelty of this year's edition of the trade fair was the zone of fasteners for the energy, electrical engineering and renew­ able energy sources sectors. Poland is among the top ten coun­ tries in the world in terms of the size of the photovoltaics market, and in Europe third after Germany and Spain. The industry has recorded continuous increases in sales and is developing dynamically, so the demand for specialised compo­ nents is constantly growing. It was these, innovative and meet­ ing the highest quality standards, that were presented in the zone dedicated to energy. The high level of business meetings and the potential that the FASTENER POLAND Trade Fair brings to the development of the fastener industry are confirmed by the opinions of its exhibitors. The development of ecologi­ cal and economic construction and renewable energy sources requires access to fasteners that meet the highest quality stan­ dards. The market responds to these needs by designing and delivering the best solutions with increased resistance to the difficult conditions in which these systems are used. All these problems were discussed by respected experts, and the confer­ ence enjoyed great interest among visitors and exhibitors alike. ne of BHETA’s most popular member services is its ongo­ ing programme of online and live events enabling supplier companies to meet with leading retailers for a mixture of presentations, contact detail updates, live Q&A or Meet The Buyer sessions. Over the last couple of months, it has been really striking to see how many of these events involve online marketplaces. Just recently BHETA members have met with three of the leading

names – Amazon, Walmart, and Home Depot – and both B&Q Marketplace and eBay have also presented, the latter on several occasions. Clearly the format is a major retail trend, so it seems timely to look at how this sector is enjoying exponential growth and what the opportunities are. Popular with shoppers for their convenience and ease of price comparison, the increasing number of players in this channel is already a phenomenon. To put this in context, by 2027, third­party sales through marketplaces will be the largest and fastest­growing retail channel globally, adding more than $1.3 trillion in sales by 2027 and accounting for 38% of all global retail sales growth and 59% of global ecommerce (source: Ascential).

global marketplace leaders of today are Amazon, Alibaba, Pinduoduo and JD.com. In the UK, the largest are eBay UK, ASOS, Argos, John Lewis, Currys PC World, Zalando, Notonthe­ highstreet, Boohoo and Very. But there are many other names worthy of mention: Rakuten, known as the ‘Amazon of Japan’, Etsy, catering to artisans, crafters, and vintage sellers, MercadoLibre, operating primarily in Latin America, AliEx­ press, part of the Alibaba Group and Flipkart, based in India and owned by Walmart. Both the Debenhams brand and Tesco are poised to enter or re­enter the field. Advantages and disadvantages for sellers There are many advantages for sellers. Firstly, it is an additional route to market with lower marketing costs than other sales channels. The online marketplace’s own brand may well provide a level of additional trust in the seller’s brand and the impartial reviews can be marketing gold dust in themselves. From an operational perspective, the supplier can enjoy round­ the­clock trading with availability, prices and stock levels trans­ parent and accessible in an open environment. Over and above these however, it’s well worth reiterating the export potential of this kind of platform. As I’ve touched on before, export to new markets is now a key opportunity for UK businesses, and online marketplaces provide a way to steer around many of today’s barriers to international trade. There are also disadvantages. Marketplaces can charge commission on every sale and fees can vary. There may be restrictive terms, conditions about how to communicate with customers, and possibly limitations as to how a seller’s online presence can be branded. So good information is key and as a quick rule of thumb, here are the main points to check.

aul Dowding, Managing Director of D&M Tools in Twick­ enham, London, is a lucky man. When it comes to arranging the weather for what has become one of the premier tool shows of the year, it is mainly dry (in my memory) so exhibitors can safely set up their outside demo areas and visitors can sit around outside and indulge in food and drinks. Free parking and free entrance are also now essential ingre­ dients for a successful show – especially in these days of tough budgeting. But, judging from some of the boxes being carried to the carpark by purchasers, there are still reasons for investing in new and more efficient tools – especially cordless ones. I had a short but interesting conversation with a tradey, that shows that users are being canny – he was clutching a top of the range M­Class vacuum extractor from one premium manufacturer, to

work with a cordless plunge saw from another premium manu­ facturer. He had worked out the costs and compatibility of the tools to take advantage of the show deals. ‘Work smart ‘ is a good motto for most trades and situations I think. Some of the smaller manufacturers were unfortunately not represented at the show this year – signs of the times I think. Deep pockets are needed to put on an effective display and staff it with the experts needed to chat to the visitors. I visited on the Friday (first of three days) which is normally considered a ‘slow’ day as the trades are more likely to attend on weekend days, but most of the exhibitors had a buzz of interested end users looking at and weighing up the tools on display. The exhibitors seemed to be happy too, as the ‘bottom line’ seemed to be holding up – with more to come on the next two days.

The sun was shining for this year’s D&M Tool Show There was a smattering of new products to look at. The Festool SYMC 70 mitre saw caught my eye. Aimed at workers who need easy to set and highly accurate mitre cutting, the two interlinked fences work in tandem to easily set internal and external angles, making fitting mitres a doddle. The Trend Company is constantly innovating – their new small T18S cordless plunge router is a gem because it is so easy to handle and has good balance because the designers have managed to place the battery pack in the right place. New Trend door and hinge jigs are less exciting to look at, but are easier to use. Take a look at the new kitchen hinge and handle jigs – easy to use, accuracy guaranteed if you do it right! Some new corded routers are simplified for workshop use – but with the simplification comes a significant drop in price. Always welcome if you don’t need all the bells and whistles. New safety legislation has meant that Trend has modified the switch gear set­up for table­mounted routers. The new system is easy to connect, has an NVR switch and is altogether a neater and safer solution. Wera is always working away in the background on develop­ ing and extending its range. Latest small steps make a simple screwdriver set with both a 6mm hex socket and a Rapidaptor that can be used in confined spaces with all the flexibility and

thoughtfulness of design we all expect from Wera. Temptation overcame me at the Fein stand, where the new Ampshare battery system (Bosch battery compatibility) has now been implemented across some of the Fein range. I treated myself to the new Ampshare version of the Black Supercut Multimaster, now that my old one is making so many expensive­sounding noises, after what I can only describe as a very hard working life. It is the only power tool that I own that comes to every job with me and has saved me so much time and effort over the years it has more than paid for itself. As I wandered into the show, I noticed a police car parked up near the entrance gate and a few uniformed police officers around the area. My first thought was that there had been an incident and the police were attending. However, when I chat­ ted to Paul later, he confirmed that it was part of an initiative by D and M and the local police to make it easier for users to security mark their tools. If those tools get stolen and then recovered, the police would be able to identify the owner by the security mark and be able to return them. Tool theft is a huge issue for trades, especially in London and the South East. I overheard a conversation in the car park where a tradey was actually coming to the show to replace all his tools that had been recently stolen. The marking system is a practical way that users, dealers, manufacturers and the police can help discourage the thefts that cause so much hassle and heartache to tradespeople. Despite hard times and tight budgets, it seems as though the D&M Show still has a place for tool users to come and look, try, handle and chat about them with experts. From what I saw there were many tools bought on that day – so there is hope that the tools needed for recovery, and just getting our exten­ sions done are out there being used. www.dm-tools.co.uk

lmost half (47%) of those working in the UK metal industry say investing in upskilling is a priority for their business in the next 12 months, according to new research from SAIT Abrasives. SAIT, specialist manufacturer of rigid and flexible abra­ sives for industrial use, wanted to understand the scale of training in the metal industry as it embarks on its latest training push. The survey revealed that over the next year, more than half of businesses in the sector will be investing in ongoing training (53%) and just less than half will access direct training from suppliers (40%). Further to this, half of respondents (52%) said that their organisation provides enough training to help those entering the industry gain the skills they need to do the job efficiently, with almost two­fifths (37%) saying that their company employs apprentices. Despite this two in five (43%) did admit that they are concerned that the industry as a whole isn’t doing enough to train new people entering the workforce and half (51%) said their organisation could be doing more to overcome the skills gap. Chris Ingman, SAIT Abrasives MD, says: “Our research shows that there is a real divide between the industry in those that will be prioritising training and upskilling, and those who are concerned that the indus­ try isn’t doing enough to overcome the skills gap.

Bright sparks: Young talent entering the industry face challenges with – arguably – not enough schemes in place to support their entry into the sector

“Having started as an apprentice myself, this is a vital route into the market and a way for us to overcome skills shortages. It’s great to see that many businesses do see the value in such schemes, but we as a sector need to make sure that there are more opportunities like this available and attractive to those considering our industry for their future career.” SAIT’s survey showed that more than a third (40%) of companies will look to suppliers to provide training in the coming year. When many suppliers are happy to support their customers, perhaps it’s surprising that almost two thirds (60%) of the sector aren’t using this resource. Ingman adds: “We’ve seen much success with the training sessions we provide to our end­users. They get to see the most effective ways to use our products which ultimately leads to increased workplace productivity. Asking suppliers what they offer is a simple way to get ahead on training and support current employees.” Andy Mills is FEIN UK MD, a power tools specialist which is working with SAIT to provide surface finishing solutions to the metalworking industry. Mills said: “There is room for suppliers to collaborate on training initiatives which can maximise the opportunities for end­users who want to upskill their work­ force. Ultimately, collaboration across the supply chain can really help to improve efficiencies across core processes so businesses and their employees can benefit.” Further to this, over half (53%) of respondents said that the training in their organisation is one of the reasons they like

SAIT MD Chris Ingham concludes: “These stats highlight the challenges that young talent is facing as they find a way into this industry. en years after it was founded in 1948, fischer produced a patented plastic expansion plug. Fast forward to 2023 and the firm is now a €1 billion­plus company, with a global group across different areas of business including and extending far beyond fixing technology. fischer Automotive is its second largest division, providing high­quality products including air vents, trays, cup holders and multi­functional components for vehicles like Mercedes­Benz. fischertechnik manu­ factures innovative education toys made in Germany, including construction kits for classrooms. Meanwhile, fischer Consulting assists companies in optimising processes based on the in­house fischer ProcessSys­ tem since 2004. fischer Electronic Solu­ tions develops sensors, and custom electronic solutions, then there’s fischer toolmaker, FISCO and fischer custom machine construction. For its fixing division, time hasn’t exactly stood still. From that early plastic expan­

sion plug to modern iterations of that prod­ uct type, steel anchors, chemical fixing systems and screws, fischer has gone on to develop the famous S­plug and DuoPower, the latter kicking off the DuoLine family in 2015. There’s been what is reportedly the world’s first fastening robot, the BauBot, which creates drill holes and installs fischer fixing solutions in walls, floors and ceilings – a far cry from the limit of technology back in fischer’s early days. The last 40 years, under the manage­ ment of Prof Klaus Fischer, have seen many of these sizeable developments take place. fischer now has more than 5,600 members of staff worldwide, who are – says Prof Klaus Fischer – “our company’s greatest asset and most crucial factor for success, rather than our facilities and buildings”.
