Roaring ‘20s Saint Agnes Catholic School 24th Annual Auction February 15, 2020

Dear Friends of Saint Agnes Catholic School, When I heard this year’s theme for our Saint Agnes School Auction was “The Roaring Twenties,” I immediately thought how appropriate! Our school and parish were both founded in the Roaring Twenties - in 1923. How proud we need to be of the 96 year history of our parish and school, who have always worked hand in hand. Our school is significant to our parish, and our parish has always supported our school as its primary ministry. How pleased I am also this year for the honorary chairs, Father Don Cullen and Mrs. Rose Soptic. Both have given a significant part of their lives to this parish to enrich both the church and the school. My gratitude to both of them for being honorary chairs and for the many, many years of love and service they have given in the past and continue to offer to our parish today.

I also wish to extend a warm welcome to our alums returning to Saint Agnes to support their school in this auction. It is wonderful to have you here.

I also want to thank all our parishioners, guests and friends who gather here tonight to support this most important ministry of our parish. Without your support tonight, and continually throughout the year, the Catholic education we provide would not be possible.

Let me express my gratitude to all who are working this evening: parents, teachers, staff, parishioners, the Nigro Brothers Charity Auctioneers, and those who have worked behind the scenes countless hours to put the auction together, gathering gifts and decorating the school, to make this evening such a beautiful event and wonderful success.

A school community enhances a parish community in so many ways. We can be proud that our parish and school have been one for 96 years, and that Jesus, His mother Mary, and our beloved Saint Agnes, have played a key role in the lives of thousands of current and former members of Saint Agnes Parish. So, may your evening be filled with cold drinks, delicious food, warm fellowship, and new friendships, as well as merry-making and outlandish bidding!

Honorary Auction Chair Mrs. Rose Soptic Rose Soptic, St. Agnes parishioner and beloved St. Agnes School teacher and volunteer, received degrees in Business and Social Studies from Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Alva OK. She received her degree in Education from Rockhurst University. Rose is listed in the “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.”

Rose taught for 23 years at St. Agnes Catholic School and then spent 14 more years as a substitute teacher for us. Rose also taught at St. Joseph High School in Shawnee for two years.

Rose and her husband, Bob Soptic, were married for 55 years. Their home for 43 years was just north of the school. Always active in the parish, Bob was a former School Board President and Parish Council Member. In addition to serving on various other committees, Bob also shared his beautiful voice as a member of the St. Agnes choir. Bob passed from this life into his eternal reward in 2018. Rose has since moved from the family home, but still lives near the parish. In addition to volunteering in the Library every Tuesday and Wednesday reading to our school children, Rose is also a member of the funeral committee and over the years has served by working with transfer students for the Sacramental Prep. She has lovingly served on various other parish committees as well.

Rose and Bob raised three children in this parish, Steven (Roeland Park), Debra (St. Louis), Karen (Leawood). All three are graduates of St. Agnes Grade School and Bishop Miege High School. She is very proud of her seven grandchildren: Alexa, Abby, and John Gahagan; Nicole, Megan, and Kyle Zoellner; and Nicholas Soptic.

We are honored to have Rose as one of our Honorary Chairs tonight and we are grateful for all she has done, and continues to do for our parish and school!

Honorary Auction Chair Fr. Don Cullen Father Don Cullen is the son of Charles and Nell Cullen. Father Cullen has served the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas since 1971. He was ordained that year at his home parish of Queen of the Holy Rosary, in Overland Park. His service to the Archdiocese has taken him to nine of our parishes: Assumption Parish in Topeka (1971-1974), Saint Joseph Parish in Shawnee (19741978), Saint Paul’s in Olathe (1978-1979), Saint John’s in Lawrence (1979-1980), St. Patrick’s in Osage, Saint Patrick’s in Scranton, and Saint Francis of Assisi in Overbrook (1980-1986), and Saint Paul’s in Olathe (1986-1992). Father Cullen was our Pastor at Saint Agnes from 1992 until 2005.

From Saint Agnes he took time off to care for his mother. In 2006, he returned to Queen of the Holy Rosary as Pastor and retired from there in 2013. In retirement, Father Cullen joins his fellow retired priests helping out in our local parishes.

During his tenure at St Agnes, in addition to his many sacramental duties, Father also taught each 8th grade class “Life Lessons 101”. He shared all his pearls of wisdom regarding faith and the “do’s and don’ts” of everyday living. He also spearheaded the eighth grade retreat each year.

We will always be thankful to Father Cullen and a wise group of parishioners who, in 1996, envisioned and began our annual auction.

Since its inception, the Saint Agnes Annual Auction has stood as a benchmark for other school auctions. This event contributes thousands of dollars each year, funding our school with the tools needed for the spiritual, academic, and physical growth of our students.

We are honored to have Father Cullen as one of our Honorary Chairs tonight and we are forever grateful for all he has done to support St. Agnes Catholic School!

General Information

• The first rule of the St. Agnes Auction is for everyone to have fun and to remember we are here to support the quality of education at St. Agnes Catholic School.

• All bidders must check-in at the registration table to receive a bid number.

• All sales are final. No exchanges or refunds will be made.

• All services must be used within one year of the auction, unless otherwise stated by the donor. Some items and services have certain restrictions; stipulations set by the donors must be followed.

• All arrangements with the donor are to be made by the buyer within 30 days of the auction.

• Values listed are donor-stated values and estimates, and as such, are not warranted by St. Agnes School for tax purposes. All merchandise is sold “as is”.

• Full payment is required for items on auction night. Highest bidders may pay at the cashier by cash, check, Visa, Discover, AmEx, or MasterCard. Items may be claimed from the table where they were bid by showing a paid receipt to the table attendant. Gift Certificate items can be claimed from a cashier.

• Items must be removed from the school the evening of the auction. If it is not possible to remove the item that evening, items may be picked up during school hours 8:00 a.m - 3:15 p.m. beginning on Tuesday, February 18, 2020.

• The silent auction tables will close as noted in the program. The last valid bid will be considered the buyer. The auction chairperson will act as final authority on all sales.

• The Live Auction will begin at 7:45 p.m. and continue without interruption until all items are sold. Successful bidders will be required to sign the bid sheet. The auctioneer will act as the final authority on all Live Auction sales.

What to Expect as a Mobile Bidder

Register your mobile number and credit card information on our registration page in advance of the event or upon arrival.

When the auction is open, you will receive an automated ‘Welcome’ text with your bidder link.

After clicking the link in the text, begin searching for packages by name, number, or category Select the package you wish to bid on.

You can Bid the next increment or Bid More than the next increment If you choose to Bid More you can choose to set your Max Bid. If your max bid is the highest, the system will automatically bid in your favor until you are outbid or until the silent auction closes. If your bid is lower than the highest max bid on that package, you will be prompted to enter a higher bid.

As principal of this amazing school, I am privileged each and every day to be working with your children, and have the pleasure of watching the Lord’s work in action. It is truly a blessing to witness all the good things happening first hand.

The St. Agnes community is rich in tradition. We work to carry on the legacy of so many who walked these halls before us, but need your help and financial contributions to continue the mission. St. Agnes Street Sign Tonight, we honor a long-standing supporter of St. Agnes. Raymond Moritz, husband of Suzanne, father of Angie Pedrotti, Lee Neenan, Jonathan Moritz, and Heidi Hartman, who was a passionate supporter of St. Agnes parish and school. He believed in Catholic education, sending all of his children to St. Agnes and then Bishop Miege. He began his career teaching at Miege and was an avid supporter of Catholic Charities, contributing his time, talents, and treasure. He passed away a year ago and we continue to honor him tonight. St. Agnes is committed to creating a designated space where preschool - 8th grade students can participate in project-based learning that will prepare them for our ever-changing world and tomorrow’s work force. The St. Agnes Innovation Lab will be an environment that supports these concepts. With your donation we will create the lab with flexible seating and workspace, supply materials specifically geared towards projects and activities that foster critical thinking, and provide professional development training opportunities for our teachers in Innovative Learning.

Tax Information for Patrons of the St. Agnes Auction

Federal tax legislation contains substantiation and disclosure requirements that affect all charitable organizations, which are exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code. The two areas which require documentation are substantiation of contributions in excess of $250 and the disclosure of contributions in excess of $75 for which the donor receives a quid pro quo in the form of goods or services from the charity.

Quid Pro Quo Disclosure Statement

The ticket price for the St. Agnes Auction is $55 ($70 table seating) and is believed to be a reasonable estimate of the fair market value of the food, beverages and entertainment services. Persons who pay more for an item than the stated fair market value will be considered to have made a donation to St. Agnes School equal to the difference of those two amounts. If the auction item consisted solely of tangible religious benefits, it is regarded for tax purposes to have no fair market value and the entire purchase amount will therefore be considered a charitable donation. All cash gifts to St. Agnes School qualify as charitable contributions as long as the donor receives no direct benefit in return. If the amount of the cash donation or the donated auction item is more than $250, the donor is required to have written acknowledgment as substantiation for the contribution. Upon request, St. Agnes School will provide such substantiation, which will contain the cash amount contributed or the identity of the item, but not its fair market value.

Patrons of the auction are advised to consult their professional tax advisor for specific information regarding the proper deductibility of their financial support of the auction.
