Gardner, once a famous poet, now is retired. He slips in and out of senility as his wife, Fanny, valiantly tries to keep them both afloat. They have asked their daughter, Mags, to come home and help them move. Mags agrees, for she hopes as well to finally paint their portrait. On the verge of artistic celebrity herself, Mags hopes by painting her parents, to come to terms with them and they with her.

Notes from the Director What color is resentment?

That was a question I posed to Google as I thought about Margaret Church, the nearly famous painter in our story. Mags embraces color, much as a child would a well-loved teddy bear. Each hue is reminiscent of a time, a place, an emotion.

The Churches themselves are colorful characters. Gardner, the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet who teaches the pet bird to recite poetry. Fanny, the matriarch with her crazy hats and thrift store shopping sprees. And Mags, the artist, who's so out she's in.

You'd need a large canvas to paint this family and an endless palette to capture their essence. Just like your family, I'm sure.

But where to begin? Are loss and sadness the same shade of blue? How is a memory best represented? And what color is resentment?

Painting Churches Margaret Church, Mags to her family and friends, is on the verge of artistic notoriety. She's been given a one-woman show at one of the most important galleries in New York. The final portrait for the show is the one she will do of her parents if she can get them to sit still long enough to pose. But will her memories and her relationship with her parents color her vision?

Carla Baechtle (Mags): After a (long) hiatus to live abroad and have a few kids, Carla recently returned to the stage and is pleased to be appearing in her first show with StageCoach Theatre Company. Favorite roles in the past include May in See Rock City, Froggy in The Country Club and Amy in Tape. An abundance of thanks to her husband Matt, without whom this return to theater would not be possible.

Fanny Sedgwick Church has to get cracking!

She's packing up a lifetime in Boston to move to a Cape Cod cottage the size of a handkerchief.

Her poet husband and her daughter, the artist, are no help at all. But her attempts to bring order to their lives have created an emotional chaos that the three of them will need to sort out first.

Painting Churches Gardner Church is a Pulitzer prize-winning poet who has always had his head in the clouds. He spends his days typing pages for his new book and teaching the bird to recite poetry. HIs daughter thinks he's "abstracted". His wife thinks he's "mad as a hatter". What Gardner thinks is anyone's guess as his tenuous grip on reality begins to unravel.

Bob Chaves (Gardner Church): Active in local theatre both on and off stage for over 25 years, Bob is excited to make his StageCoach Theatre debut. Favorite roles over the years include: Robert in Proof (Peters Alley Theatre); Lloyd, the director in Noises Off (Taking Flight Productions); Neville, Secret Garden (The Reston Players); and Scrooge, A Christmas Carol (with both Loudoun Centre Theatre and The Little Theatre of Alexandria). He is a past president of Dominion Stage, and has designed and built a set or two over the years.
