Director’s Note
As this was my first time directing a show by myself I needed a piece that meant something personal to me. I grew up in a Jewish household in northern Virginia and the history of the Holocaust was read to me about once a year in Hebrew school. I questioned to myself why I didn't learn about this very much in public school until I started doing research for myself about the Holocaust. The history I learned in Sunday school was tame compared to the real survivor stories I was reading.
While the Franks and the Van Pels are one story, on a single average day during the Holocaust 15,000 stories ended. 15,000 is not just a number, those are real people who had families and dreams for their futures. It's hard for me to imagine 15,000 of anything, but the thought of 15,000 souls gone just in a single day terrifies me.
While this point in history is devastating and horrific to say the least, I encourage people to learn about the Holocaust for what it truly was. Reading true stories about real families and people is very important to me, and I never want the victims of the Holocaust to be forgotten. I hope Anne’s story opens up a world of other stories and lived experiences you’ve yet to discover.
