A Message From the Editor Hello readers, Welcome to the May/June edition of the Staffordshire Outlook magazine.

Here at the Staffordshire Outlook, we are celebrating our 6th anniversary! We are so grateful to all of the clients who continue to advertise their business and to the readers for contributing to the Staffordshire Outlook Magazine’s popularity and success. Here’s to another 6 years!

Do you Dream

of retiring?

I meet many clients, some new, some longstanding and apart from the few that live to work and never see themselves not working, the vast majority would love to be in a position to finish work and enjoy life.

How do you know when you have enough money to retire? Most people, whilst they are working, are far too busy to work out how much money they need to live on and more importantly what they want to do with their lives.

I have in the last week had two clients suffer adversity; one client who was 71 years of age and still working sadly passed away (he had been telling me for the last 6 years he was going to retire) and another who retired in December aged 60 has suffered a major stroke.

Life is so short and I am constantly reminded of this which makes my

job so fulfilling when I can make a difference to someone’s life. A great example of this is another one of my clients who has just called to see me to review his finances.

Keith first came to see me back in 2010 when he was 58 years old.

At the time he was in remission from prostate cancer and wanted to ensure his retirement benefits were protected.

personal contribution of £12,000 meaning a grand total of £501,527 was paid into his pension.

When considering transfers we also compare the benefits being given up with what it would cost to purchase an annuity on the open market as this then gives us an investment yield that needs to be achieved in order to match the benefits.

We carried out a full review and in total Keith had 4 pensions all with different providers although his main pension was a preserved final salary pension with Hansons.

In this case the yield required was 9.96% - way above what we would consider achievable. However, when looking at the benefits payable while in the scheme, on Keith’s death there was no spouse’s benefit which in effect meant the scheme died with him.

The pension he was entitled to on his 65th birthday was just in excess of £17,000 per annum and the transfer value was £219,000. In addition to this his other pensions gave him a total transfer value of £489,527. In 2015 Keith made a

The reason I am telling you this is because when Keith came in to see me this morning he had finally set a retirement date of 22nd June this year and no-one is happier than me.

Did he make the right decision transferring back in 2010? Keith thinks so as his pension is now worth £770,900 giving him an annualised return of 7.3% which, although less than what was required to purchase an annuity, Keith has no intention of doing that as he would prefer to control what benefits he takes and when he takes them.

The other advantage he has is that he does not require all of his tax free cash so he has the flexibility to take what he wants when he needs it thus giving him freedom to spend his savings which are on deposit attracting very little interest, knowing that cash is accessible as and when required.

This summer Keith will now spend his time with his 4 year old grandson giving him memories that will last a lifetime. It does also give him more time to follow his passion which is going to all the Wolves matches both home and away, which this year has been very enjoyable and successful

Penkridge Market MAY BANK HOLIDAY MARKETS Penkridge Market, near Stafford, will be holding two Bank Holiday Markets and Car Boot Sales this May, on Monday the 7th and 28th. The events will run from 9am to 3pm and with free admission and free parking, they’re a great free day out for all the family.

Around 100 market stall holders will be there selling a wide range of goods, including delicious produce such as breads, cakes and coffee beans, to homemade pies, chutneys and preserves. SI CANNOCK & DISTRICT LONG SERVICE AWARDS Cannock Soroptimists held their AGM at the beginning of April. One of the final tasks out-going President Val Jones undertook was to acknowledge the years of service to Soroptimist International – and the Cannock & District club – that three members in particular have given.

Pam McGauley, Trish Mellor and Lakhwinder Thompson all joined the Club in 1998 and so have each given 20 years of service to SI Cannock & District. To mark the occasion President Val presented each of them with a long service certificate.

All three members have held the role of President within the club and Trish and Lakhwinder have each been club secretary. Trish has been Programme Action Officer, co-ordinating the work the club does to educate, enable and empower women and girls and has been the Club’s Press Officer for a number of years. Lakhwinder has been Treasurer, Membership secretary and has held the post of Friendship Link Co-ordinator for some time. She corresponds and shares news and views with link clubs in Harrisburg, Perth, Melbourne, Vienna and Port Talbot. Pam has been Membership officer both at the club and at Midland Chase Region, this particular role taking her to all other clubs within the Midland Chase. She has often served as a member of the Club’s executive committee.

All three have been extremely active Soroptimists – and all three asked where the last 20 years had gone!

Mr Jae Rhee, an upper limb specialist, who also practices at the private Nuffield Hospital in Wolverhampton treats a wide range of shoulders, elbows and wrists, often damaged through sporting activities. Exploring Cannock Chase

Cannock Chase is a mixture of natural deciduous woodland, coniferous plantations and open heathland set amid the remnants of Staffordshire’s coal mining past. It is largely confined within Cannock Chase Local Government District, which comprises the towns of Cannock, Hednesford and Rugeley.

Main roads crossing over include the A460 and the A513. The Chase was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1958 and is the smallest area to be recognised as such in mainland Britain, covering a distance of 26 square miles. It means it is protected by law and carefully managed by the Forestry Commission to maintain its special character.

From Marquis Drive begin a number of colour-coded walks across the Chase, with each colour indicating a different duration and/or difficulty level. Another popular destination point to start a woodland walk from is Birches Valley Forest Centre, which is located on Lady Hill. The Route to Health walk is ideal for a gentle stroll, while longer walks are outlined alongside the picturesque Fairoak and Sherbrook valleys.

Birches Valley is also an ideal starting point for adventure-seekers. Aside from an adventure play area, there’s now the recently opened Go Ape attraction. This high ropes course is open between February and November and offers 3 hours of treetop excitement. This part of the Chase also affords the premier mountain biking destination in the West Midlands, with the Follow the Dog and Monkey trails particularly well renowned.

Orienteering, fishing and horse riding are other popular recreational activities at Cannock Chase.

From a starting location at Seven Springs car park, in the Rugeley area, walkers can undertake an easy, but lengthy, trek across the Staffordshire Way and up to the fringes of the Chase and the Shugborough Estate, which contains the most significant country house in Staffordshire, Shugborough Hall, a National Trust site.

As well as forest and heathland, Cannock Chase encompasses areas of designed parkland, sand and gravel quarrying and mixed agriculture. The Cannock Chase AONB Management Plan has been put together by like-minded local people to help conserve and enhance the area in the face of amounting recreational and economical pressures.

Over 1.5 million people visit Cannock Chase each year.

Considering its relatively small size the Chase is home to a wide diversity of flora and fauna, including an 800-strong herd of wild fallow deer. The deer enjoy roaming the still vast expanse of land the Chase offers, but are shy, secretive creatures and seldom spotted by casual visitors. They most likely descend from the original herd introduced for hunting during Norman times.

Cannock Chase boasts the largest surviving area of lowland heathland in the Midlands. This seriously threatened wildlife habitat supports scarcely seen birds such as hobbies, stonechats and nightjars in the area around Sherbrook Valley. The more expansive pine forest and woodland habitat nests bird species such as turtle doves, lesser spotted woodpeckers and redpolls, as well as birds of prey like sparrowhawks and long-eared owls.

For birdwatchers the feeding station at Marquis Drive is a must. It attracts bullfinches, yellowhammers and, in winter, large gatherings of bramblings and crossbills.

The Museum of Cannock Chase is situated on the edge of Hednesford Hills and highlights the rich industrial heritage of the area. SI CANNOCK & DISTRICT NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME President Val Jones welcomed members to the final speaker meeting of her year in office. The speaker for the occasion was Graham White talking about the amazing transformation of his large garden plot into a stunning horticultural vision, which won him and his wife Judy a highly recommended place in the National Garden Scheme (NGS). With no previous experience he overcame the formidable obstacles of a steep embankment leading down into a swamp and small stream. He achieved this this with wife Judy – along with the muscle power of three teenage sons!

They moved into their home in Uttoxeter 26 years ago and spent the first 17 years creating the garden which is now open to the public each year through the NGS. It was a fascinating and entertaining story which everyone thoroughly enjoyed – and the end result shown with some super photos , is simply magnificent! Seeing the garden now it’s hard to believe the plot of ground they started with all of those years ago.

Graham used many ploys to enlist the help of their sons, including convincing them that laying the turf was for a putting green [they were keen golfers] not a lawn! In reference to this, Graham and Judy put a small golf flag on the lawn when their sons and their families visit.

During his talk Graham explained that all proceeds from entry to the garden go to NGS – and all of their

money is donated each year to ‘caring’ charities – Hospice UK; MS Society; Macmillan Cancer Support being just three of them. In the 9 years they have opened as post of the scheme Graham and Judy have had 6,425 visitors to Woodleighton Grove. Private visits can be booked by phoning them on 01889 563930.

Soroptimist Sue Cartlidge gave the vote of thanks, saying that she would love similar results in her own newly acquired garden!! She presented Graham with a cheque for the National Garden Scheme charities.

WELCOMING MEMBERS Following the AGM in April new Chairman Sheila Burrows opened her first meeting of the year: welcoming members and four prospective members.

Following an enjoyable meal with time to chat, our speaker Trevor Poxon regaled us with humorous tales from his time as a Police Motorway Patrol Driver.

The most significant change over the years being that it was important to keep the carriageways clear and the traffic free flowing as life expectancy getting out of your car on the motorway is a frightening 20 seconds; increasing only to 20 mins whilst on the hard shoulder. Nowadays the recommendations are to close a carriageway for the police to take numerous details in case of litiginous situations.

On one occasion he was called to rescue a lady driver who could not escape ‘spaghetti junction’ as she was trying to find the exit to the M1. On another memorable occasion he was called to transfer Princess Diana and her bodyguard from an unscheduled stop at Birmingham, due to adverse weather conditions, to her appointment in Worcester.

Trevor’s light-hearted story telling culminated in him encouraging all young people to participate in “Pass Plus” following passing their driving test. As this helps with further instruction on motorway driving, night driving, all weather conditions, confidence 28 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY 2018

Competition Tickets for Staffordshire County Show! Win a family ticket!

Tickets for one of the most important event in the agricultural calendar are now on sale.

People across Staffordshire and beyond will be able to pick up tickets for the Staffordshire County Show from the Showground office and all the usual outlets.

Richard Williams, Chief Executive of the Staffordshire and Birmingham Agricultural Society, said it is an exciting time.

Many people look forward to the first opportunity to get their tickets and it is fast approaching.

Attractions at the show on May 30 and 31 include an exciting line up in the main ring of the The JCB Dancing Diggers as well as dancing dogs when the Rockwood Dog display team from Caerphilly, Wales.

The Dancing Diggers were born when the founder of JCB, the late Joseph Bamford, wanted to demonstrate the strength of the new breed of hydraulic machines to sceptical buyers. They have since curtsied for the Queen, pirouetted for TV and thrilled thousands all over the world with their spectacular show.

The dog team, which has featured on national television shows such as That’s Life, The Wogan Show, TFI Friday, Rolf’s amazing animals and Dogs With Jobs, will put the dogs through their paces with a relay race to entertain the crowds.

With some of the dogs being from rescued backgrounds, they aim to wow the crowds performing spectacular stunts like parallel bar walking and fire retrieving.

There is also a vast array of animals for children to pet in the Country Pursuits Area including a return of the popular giant tortoises, which appeared for the first time last year.

Produce, trade stands and agriculture make up the backbone of the popular event at the showground in Weston Road.

Last year around 65,000 people attended to watch competitions judging cows to crumpets, pigs to potatoes and flowers to farriary - there’s certainly something that all members of the family can get involved with.

Richard added that he is thrilled about the line-up for this year’s show.

He said: “We have some great new aspects at the 2018 show and it’s shaping up to be bigger and better than ever.

I am very excited for the show already and final preparations are now being made.

The real key is that there are so many different shows within this show and there really is something for all the family.”

Gardening A FLAVOUR OF GEUMS The name Geum comes from ancient Greek meaning to “add flavour”; and even today they are still invaluable for adding colour to our spring and early summer borders.

There are low growing ones that spread to form a mat of leaves and there are taller ones creating an arching leafed clump about 1ft / 30cm tall.

All prefer a moisture retentive soil and the low growing ones can stand quite wet soils. They will tolerate dry conditions, but they will flag in the hot, dry conditions.

Geums will set seed and some wild types can become a nuisance in damp gardens. On the whole the cultivated varieties are less plentiful of seed and seedlings. Their ability to cross and set seed means there is always the chance of spotting a good new form in your garden if you grow plenty of different types, but this also means that some won’t come true from seed.

“Lemon Drops” is a very pale yellow which popped up as a chance seedling in Beth Chatto’s famous garden.

“Snowflake” has large, pure white flowers. “Farmer John Cross” has primrose yellow flowers that are sometimes semi-double.

Geum coccineum has upward-facing orange flowers and will stand drier soils. For the best show choose “Eos” which has bright yellow leaves in spring to set off the flowers.

The best hybrids share this tendency for upward or outward facing flowers creating a more dramatic show, not to disparage the delicate beauty of the nodding types. “Abendsonne” has orange-yellow flowers, “Hannays” is a bit taller and has soft orange flowers. The well-known “Bell Bank” is silky pink.

Of the new varieties coming along the Cocktail Series has some intoxicating colours. “Mai Tai” is pale peach and large-flowered, “Cosmopolitan” is a slightly deeper shade, “Tequila Sunrise” is red and yellow and “Banana Daquiri” is a lovely pale yellow.

If promptly dead headed these Geums will bloom again later in the season, provided they have not been left too dry through the summer.

I have selected some of my favourite new and old varieties for you.

I’ll start with the border types and the best loved is the semi-double scarlet flowered “Mrs. J. Bradshaw” who grows to about 1ft tall with longer arching flower stems. The apricot yellow “Lady Stratheden” is almost as famous, as is the orange “Dolly North”. This type flowers in late spring through to mid-summer and sometime beyond and the flowers are large and showy for a Geum. I find this type can tend to die out after 2 or 3 years unless divided after flowering and replanted as single rosettes.

The low growing varieties are mainly descendants of the native water avens, Geum rivale, and ideally these want a moist soil, but they seem to do fine in my dry sandy soil. These plants tend to have flowers that are small nodding bells on short stems in spring and sometimes again in autumn.

“Barbra Lawton” is an improved form of the wild plant with far more of the peachy-pink nodding flowers.

They’re not all surrendered due to medical or behavioural problems, a change in circumstance is just as likely and also just as heart-breaking.

French Bulldog Saviours (FBS) started in 2013 when Lindsey Scanlon, the founder, saw a very badly abused and neglected French Bulldog for sale on one of the many websites that allow the sale of dogs with no real regard for their welfare.

Lindsey paid for the dog (Dolly) herself so that she could take her far away from a life of hell and stop anything else untoward happening to her. It was Lindsey’s mission to love her, nurture her and mend her.

She set up a Facebook page to ask the public to help raise funds for Dolly’s huge medical needs and was absolutely blown away by their generosity.

Fuelled with a passion to help other French Bulldogs in need, Lindsey made the decision to set up a charity, Dolly’s Angels.

With the help of the public she raised funds to rescue other Frenchie’s from a life of misery and neglect.

In 2015 French Bulldog Saviours as it was then known was awarded charity status. This has elevated our ability to inform, educate and spread the word about the current crisis and dangers faced by this gorgeous breed.

FBS is run entirely by volunteers who work tirelessly to make an impact on the lives of French Bulldogs in need, but also to educate people so that they can make informed decisions about who and where they’re buying their dogs from.

As a rescue charity we never judge people for surrendering their dogs.

Once a dog is surrendered to us it’s taken immediately into foster care. Frenchie’s don’t deal well with being on their own so providing kennels simply isn’t as option. Instead, we have a network of incredibly generous foster carers who accept the dog into their home to assess its needs. This can be anything from two weeks onwards.

Once we know exactly what the dog needs we can work on rehabilitating or repairing it before we put it up for adoption to find its forever home.

It takes a fantastic network of volunteers to make this happen. Once foster homes and potential forever homes come forward a home check has to be carried out to ensure that the home and garden provide a safe environment and to make sure the families are clued up about the breed and what to expect from them.

We often rely on people to transport dogs around the country and we also rely heavily on donations and fundraising.

We’re incredibly lucky to be supported by national brands such as Pets at Home and Zooplus, people can raise money for us each time they shop online via EasyFundraisisng or you can even make a difference by saving your stamps and unwanted items such as ink cartridges and sweet wrappers!

Each week we host an auction on our Facebook page which is where the main source of our income comes from. If it wasn’t for our supporters and kind-hearted brands donating items and also buying them we wouldn’t be able to do what we do today.

Repairing and rehabilitating French Bulldogs isn’t cheap so our vet bills are astronomical. But no cost is too big for our beloved Frenchie’s. We will always do whatever we can to give the dogs a better chance at life.

Staffordshire Outlook RAISING MONEY FOR FRENCH BULLDOG SAVIOURS On Sunday 3rd June 2018 Sharon Caldwell (Staffordshire Outlook Director) and Sister Michelle Caldwell will be taking part in their first triathlon, for their chosen charity French Bulldog Saviours (FBS).

For the past few years Sharon & Michelle have pushed their limits and completed a full marathon and Tough Mudder, and for both events they have raised money for charities.

This year’s event is their biggest challenge to date. The UK Ultimate 1/4 Triathlon which consists of a 0.6 mile swim, 28 mile cycle and 6.5 mile run.

Sharon & Michelle have their own Frenchie Frankie, who is very spoilt and very cute! They have chosen this charity as they are both so passionate about FBS and everything they do to rescue French Bulldogs.

Sharon says “We are both hoping to raise as much money as we can for FBS, as the charity is absolutely brilliant. Some of the rescues they have been involved in have been heartbreaking, but without such a great charity I dread to think what would have happened to the poor Frenchie’s. This is our biggest challenge and we are training hard now, which is tough, as we have never been on a road bike so it is proving a lot harder than we thought. Oldest Choir in Cannock WE ARE THE CANNOCK EXSERVICEMEN’S MALE VOICE CHOIR. Due to the retirement of our musical director we are searching for someone to take on the role The choir is the oldest in Cannock, being formed in 1947. In its heyday the choir was over 30 strong and won a number of choral competitions.

We are a small 19 strong, friendly and easy going choir, with the majority of the choir being in their senior years and who do not read music. But we do use and perform with sheet music.

The choir’s repertoire ranges from traditional choral pieces through to popular music with a sprinkling of comedy, concert party and solo performances.

Choir practice is weekly on a Monday night for approximately two and a half hours at the Victoria social club in Hednesford where the choir takes advantage of the bar which helps to lubricate the vocal chords.

The musical director receives an honorarium payable annually at £300 plus £25 per concert. The choir has a uniform but the musical director and accompanist wear their own suitable dress.

The choir is also pleased to welcome new comers wanting to join the ranks. No musical experience or previous military service is necessary, just an ability to sing in tune. Anyone interested can pay a visit on practice night to listen and find out more about the choir to see if it is for them. Golf is a game that’s taken very seriously.

Worldwide, players of all ages and abilities lovingly nurture their God given talent hoping they’ll one day make the perfect round; come in under par… beat their friends.

I’m no different. For me, this Saturday is like so many others that have gone before it: up at the crack of dawn, eager to sneak in a crafty few holes before I begin my weekend routine. I leave the course vaguely satisfied – as anyone who has turned in yet another below par effort ever can be – but heavy with frustration; I could have performed better. If anything I’m keen to go straight back out there. It’s an itch every player feels and usually fails to scratch. Next Saturday, it seems, can never come soon enough.

Happily however this Saturday I’m in luck because tonight I’m going

to 3 Hammers Golf Complex on the outskirts of Coven to check out the Bar & Bistro I’ve been hearing so much about. But don’t worry: you don’t need to be golfmad or even a member of the club in order to eat here – tonight I’m definitely going without golf clubs, with my partner Gisella.

3 Hammers Bar & Bistro is an independent restaurant situated at the heart of the award-winning golf complex. It is now under new management and is led by owner Shaun Timmins – an experienced food industry veteran who for

the last few years has worked at Miller & Carter Steakhouse in Penn – and Restaurant Manager Astrid Walker, who’s been working here for five years.

We arrive and are greeted warmly

by Astrid who asks us if we’d like drinks first. Of course we take her up on the offer. We sit in the vibrant bar area. I’m pleased to see some proper Real Ale up for grabs (not a guarantee in a lot of restaurants!) and go for a pint of Holden’s Golden Glow: a refreshing golden ale brewed using the finest English malts and choicest hops. The label on the pump reads ‘Black Country Born and Brewed’ – no wonder it appeals to me. Gisella drinks Bacardi and Coke. Not my cup of tea, but each to their own.

A new menu has just been launched at the restaurant and it caters well for everyone – even vegetarians. It’s a very family-friendly and welcoming atmosphere, which can be enjoyed whether you’re a golfer or not.

Looking at a lot of tonight’s crowd I’d say that the majority are among the latter. We reach the restaurant and find a superb conservatory and outdoor eating area and breathe in a mouth-watering aroma of freshly cooked traditional food.

3 Hammers Bar & Bistro sources all of its meat and chicken from a Wolverhampton-based butcher. Ahh, that explains a lot: you just can’t beat buying local.

We both opt for steaks next. I order a ‘12oz rib-eye’ (£16.95) to be cooked ‘medium’ and Gisella plumps for an ‘8oz sirloin’ (£13.95), to be cooked ‘well done.’

Both steaks are tender, flavoursome and cooked to perfection. A fine advert for what can be achieved with solid raw ingredients and a flash of culinary flair from the 3 Hammers’ ace kitchen team. The tried and tested complement of grilled flat mushrooms, tomato, onion rings, salad and upgraded (£1) sweet potato fries sets things off delightfully. We choose a bottle of Malbec to further enhance the occasion.

During our meal both Astrid and waitress Natalie visit to check if everything is going to plan. I resist the temptation to answer with “you’ll find out when I turn in my review” for fear of being labelled a bit silly.

The service tonight is entirely excellent, we never feel rushed in between courses or wait too long.

We’re too full to have a dessert each but fall victim to Natalie’s recommendation of ‘Lemony Delight’ (£5.45) – a light, refreshing note on which to end.

We resolve to come back very soon – if not for the ever-popular non-carvery Sunday lunch (£9.95), then for the Motown tribute night on Friday 4th May.

The place is buzzing with diners: a mixture of large groups, families, and couples all contribute to a pleasant ambience.

I order ‘Chicken and Chorizo Skewers with roasted pepper and smoky tomato dressing’ (£6.45) to start.

Gisella goes for ‘Buffalo Chicken Wings glazed in BBQ sauce, served with blue cheese dip’ (£5.95).

Neither are large enough to detract from the mains but ample unto themselves. The tomato dressing is sumptuous, lavishing a layer of exceptional flavour on to an already spicy dish. Gisella enjoys her choice very much. Both of us remark upon the quality of the poultry – definitely a cut above. It turns out that

Switch your oven on to 200oC While the dough is rising you can cook the chicken, potato and garlic. Rub a little oil and seasoning onto the chicken breast, bake the potato in it’s skin and put the garlic bulb in the oven in one whole piece. Once cooked you should be able to just squeeze the roasted garlic out of it’s little pods. The potato will take the longest so if you want it all to cook at the same time cut the potato into smallish chunks and toss in oil and seasoning.

To build your pizza, place a sheet of parchment paper onto each of the baking trays and then roll out the dough into 4 individuals or 2 large bases onto your baking trays and push into corners to fit or keep as traditionally shaped round bases.

Brush the tomato sauce all over leaving a 1 inch frame around the outside. Compton launches bold new strategy to address fear and revolutionise palliative care services • Compton Care is one of the first in the UK to remove ‘hospice’ from its name – challenging fear and misconceptions surrounding its services • Organisation is breaking down early care access barriers for patients and loved ones • Plans include a £2.5m investment in a Care Coordination Centre Wolverhampton-based care provider Compton Care, formerly known as Compton Hospice, launched a new strategy and identity on Wednesday 11th April aimed at revolutionising the way in which people with complex and incurable conditions are cared for, after research found that people are fearful of accessing its services.

The charity carried out patient, staff and supporter and sector research which 54

found that a large number of people associate the word ‘hospice’ with being ‘a place you go to die’. In turn, this negative perception has contributed to people often becoming fearful of accessing care from Compton, as well as healthcare professionals making referrals only in the final weeks or days of a person’s life.

Moving forward as Compton Care, the organisation’s new strategy, which includes a multi-million-pound investment in better coordination of patient care, will aim to ensure the care it provides is accessible to people much earlier and for longer. The move will bolster Compton’s service delivery at its sites and in the community for patients and their loved ones across Wolverhampton, the Black Country, Staffordshire and Shropshire.

Claire Marshall, Chief Executive of Compton Care, said: “Our new clinical strategy and brand marks an exciting step for Compton – one that continues to put the patient at the heart of care delivery. Our research with patients,

families and supporters highlighted key challenges surrounding access to hospice care – namely fear about who we are and what being referred to us means.

“We’re on a mission to remove this fear and break down barriers to service access to ensure more patients get referred to us earlier, so we can treat them sooner and help them live better lives.”

The new strategy, which includes a £2.5m investment into its Care Coordination Centre – supported by £1.5m of funding from ex-Goodyear workers, is focused on ensuring that patients are referred into its care earlier on, allowing for better complex condition management and improved quality of life. Compton will achieve this by better integrating its own services, while adopting a partnership approach with the healthcare economy

and third sector to ensure that the patient is always at the centre of delivery.

In-line with the new strategy Compton is also revealing its new name as Compton Care – a new identity to reflect its changing approach and future direction. It is one of the UK’s first to remove ‘hospice’ completely from its identity, with the aim of removing fear, challenging misconceptions and ensuring more patients and their relatives get the care needed to live better lives, earlier on.

Compton, launched more than 35 years ago, has supported almost 16,000 patients since 2000 alone.

Cannock Rotary Interact Club TREE PLANTING IN HEDNESFORD PARK On Wednesday 21st march 4 members of Chase Grammar school ‘Interact’ club, together with members of the Rotary Club of Cannock, were at Hednesford Park to plant tree saplings as part of the Rotary’s Carbon Emissions Offset Scheme.

The Chase Interact club which is sponsored by The Rotary Club of Cannock is a youth Rotary club for 12-18 year olds.

Every year, Interactors complete at least two projects in their communities, one of which is overseas, helping them build friendships and a better understanding with young people in other countries and one in their locality

volunteers including vulnerable adults from Affinity Trust.’

Andy Williams committee member from The Friends of Hednesford Park explained that the saplings ‘have become a part of the regeneration of the woodland at the back of the car park.”

On November 30th 2016, Chase Interact Club (Cannock) was started by founder and Chase Grammar Student Daniel Nicolov. The club received its charter at school assembly on Friday 9th June 2017.

The 30 Copse trees - Silver Birch, Rowan and Wild Cherry have been donated by the Woodland Trust for Rotary Groups to support Tree Planting Challenge.

Club membership varies greatly. Clubs can be drawn from the student body of a single school or from two or more schools in the same community and can be either single gender or mixed.

Rotary International President Ian Riseley has challenged every Rotarian throughout the world to plant a tree between 1st July 2017 and 22 April 2018.

Rotary have obtained saplings through the Woodland Trust this year as part of their campaign to commemorate First World War, for which 3.5 million trees will be available over the 4 years of the War. Mr Stephenson from Cannock Rotary said “We are proud to have support from Hednesford Park staff and

SI CANNOCK & DISTRICT PERIOD POVERTY Cannock Soroptimists have become aware of a growing problem in this country - families who cannot afford to buy sanitary wear needed each month. A survey found that more than 137,700 girls have missed school in the last year because they couldn’t afford sanitary products.

6 per cent of parents admit they have been so desperate to equip their daughters with sanitary protection they have resorted to stealing on the occasions they couldn’t afford to buy them, whilst more than a fifth of parents said they had gone without something themselves so they had enough money to meet their daughter’s needs.

Women’s Aid is aware of the issue as are food banks throughout the country. Many food banks distribute sanitary products and there are some specialist distribution centres already set up. Cannock Soroptimists made an initial collection of products to give to Staffordshire Women’s Aid to be donated to women in the Cannock area who use their outreach services and are unable to afford the monthly protection they need.

They are looking into ways of setting up collection and distribution on a more regular basis.

Obviously this needs more help than a local collection can provide and so SI Cannock and District has set up a petition on the Government Petitions page. 10,000 signatures will elicit a response from Government, 100,000 will bring a debate in Parliament. Cannock Soroptimists ask everyone who reads this, if they agree that the issue needs to be addressed, to please sign the petition and

then to send it on to all of their family, friends and colleagues asking them to sign. That in itself will raise the issue throughout the country.

The formal wording of the petition is as follows: Cannock & District Soroptimists are asking the government to provide free sanitary products to young women receiving free school meals.

Recent media reports have highlighted issues relating to what is being described as period poverty. 137,700 UK girls miss school each year in addition to putting their health at risk trying to manage without these essential items.

Cannock Soroptimists believe funding is needed to end period poverty.

Host families form a large part of the guardianship service we offer our students. A spokesperson said: ‘A big part of a student’s experience is living with a British host family’. The majority of our students across Staffordshire are in boarding schools and require host families for exeat week ends and half terms in October, February and May. Together with our partners abroad, we prepare students for their stay in the UK thus ensuring a happy experience and a long-lasting friendship between families and students.

Our Local guardians are the student’s guardian while they are in the UK, they are responsible for their welfare and safety. They recruit host families in their area and give support where needed. They organise the placement of students into host families and are the main contact for the local schools, students and host families.

Host families are required to complete an online application with information about their family, home and pets and photographs. This forms an electronic host family profile that can be sent to students and their parents to see before a student stays with the family.

BMW X3

THE BEST ONE YET

This class of car is certainly not short on talent – nor is it lacking in popularity. There are very strong premium contenders: the Audi Q5, Volvo XC60, Mercedes GLC, Porsche Macan and new Range Rover Velar all present compelling arguments for SUV buyers.

Splitting them is harder than splitting the atom in a school science lab, so I won’t bother.

Instead I’m going to tell you about the BMW X3 and why the latest one is the best one yet – and perhaps better than all its rivals.

After a slightly inauspicious start back in 2003 (back then the SUV formula was in its infancy) the X3 has gathered momentum through its subsequent evolutions and garnered much acclaim. Perfecting a formula takes a long time in car development but now the German brand has it completely sussed, so much so that it has three more new SUVs in the pipeline, featuring more X’s than you can shake a stick at, no doubt.

Despite now standing at roughly the same size as the original X5, the new X3 has matured into a handsome beast – even with 62

STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MAY 2018

its gurning, oversized grille. It definitely looks and feels big, but it’s a size that sells well, despite the fact that most of these vehicles seem to be used exclusively in our overcrowded towns and cities.

Out goes the entry-level two-wheel drive variant, to leave every new X3 with all-wheel drive, which is handy in snow but less so at the pumps. There is now a choice of two petrol and two turbo-diesel engines, including a new 360 bhp 3 litre: the first ever M Performance X3. And while this might grab all the attention it’s the two turbodiesels – in 2 and 3 litre forms – that will account for most of the sales.

I have here the relatively modest X3 X-drive 187 bhp 2.0d X-line and first impressions are very positive.

The X3’s chassis is just about as fun through the corners as physics will allow; it’s supple over bumps and offers up supreme comfort.

Admittedly this model has fitted optional adaptive dampers (which add between £460 to £750, depending on model) so it’s hard to know just how much is addedon refinement and how much is standard: however, anyone who is keen to spend around £40,000 on an SUV probably won’t quibble about the added cost.

The engine and gearbox is a joy to use, delivering decent fuel economy at around 40 mpg.

But don’t take my word for it, Amazon’s Echo Alexa voice control allows drivers to check fuel level, change heating and ventilation, and lock the vehicle, all via a smartphone. Look out for a few semi-autonomous driving functions too: active cruise control can brake and accelerate in lowspeed, stop-go traffic, steering lane control assist and auto city braking is good to have as well.

Get inside the X3 and you’re whisked away into a world of sybaritic luxury. Materials and build quality are first class. Seats are comfortable and supportive, the cabin is spacious and well protected against road noise, plus there’s a big boot. The optional head-up display is clear and useable; and the optional gesture control is great for impressing your mates. I also enjoyed the small spotlights behind the front wheels that illuminate entry and exit at night. It’s the little things that make the X3 stand out from the herd. For me, it’s still at the top of the SUV tree.

FRESH OUT OF THE BOX

Jaguar has managed to nail the SUV formula on its very first attempt. This is no mean feat as only rarely can a manufacturer drop a new model without it falling short in some way – big or small. As with smartphones, there’s always an update or two before we see a bona fide contender, ready to take on the established order. And because car development takes place so painfully slowly in this super-quick-fast digital age we’re usually left waiting for years before we can buy the product we’ve wanted all along.

Yet here’s Jaguar’s F-Pace, fresh out of the box, and already a big hit. To put it into perspective, BMW has been tinkering with its X5 for nearly 20 years and it’s still not as good. Even Volvo’s XC90 needs to watch out. I’m sure sister company Land Rover has helped Jaguar a lot, after all this rough and tumble division has been giving us high-riding 4x4s for millennia. However, they definitely haven’t helped out with the styling of the F-Pace or with the interior.

The Jaguar is hugely good looking, boasts a classy cabin, and goes a

long way to prove that you don’t need to buy BMW to get driving excitement from your familyfriendly crossover.

Unsurprisingly the F-Pace is rearwheel-drive for most of the time (unless you want a four-wheeldrive set-up, and even then it’ll operate only on a part-time basis) and that explains the fun factor. It won’t win any drag races, nor will it take corners like a Premiership footballer but it will impress with how – even with the most limpwristed lump beneath the bonnet – it moves its 1.7 tonnes of bulk around towns and cities.

You can get into one of these for just over £35,000; then go all the way north of £70,000. Engines range from this, the most sensible – and popular – choice for UK roads, the 237 bhp 2.0 litre diesel, up to a fruity supercharged 375 bhp V6 petrol. Pulling power is ample across all options although diesel still does it best in most cases due to some hefty torque numbers and this, when allied to the real-world prospect of getting over 35 mpg at the pumps, should prove persuasive despite growing anti-diesel sentiment.

The interior is largely faultless.

Classy materials and easy-tooperate buttons are mated with a bright, airy cabin that can comfortably carry five adults.

The cutting edge InControl Pro infotainment system can be optioned with a large 10” touchscreen which functions much like an iPad. It’s intuitive and pretty responsive, and with its ‘dual-view screen’, driver and passenger can each watch different functions at the same time (sat-nav for one, TV for the other).

Big on boot space as well – bigger even than Jaguar’s XF Sportbrake – the F-Pace is an enormously practical and stylish modern day tool. It looks vaguely hostile from the front with its big grille; its coupe-like side profile and F-Typeinspired tail-lights set it apart from Germanic ubiquity. With seats this comfy, and a Cathedral-quiet ride, you’ll almost never feel fatigued at the wheel, nor ever will you ever wonder if you made the right decision by buying British.

Overall it’s a winner – and first time out of the gate too. Already its rivals are struggling to keep pace.

ONE STOP BREAST CARE CLINIC A same day self referral breast clinic is now available privately twice a week at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital.

People who notice changes can be referred to the One Stop Breast Clinic to have the results from both a specialist consultation and imaging on the same day.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK, with 31% of all cancers diagnosed in women being breast cancer. Survival from the disease has been improving over time as a result of both early detection and improvements in treatment. Now approximately three out of four women diagnosed with breast cancer are alive 10 years later. However about 12,000 women in the UK still die from breast cancer every year.

A ‘One-Stop’ integrated breast clinic is now available at the Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital. Private patients can be seen for a specialist consultation, which includes a mammogram and an ultrasound for a package price of £495. Usually the results of the imaging and consultation are all explained at one visit.

up to form a lump, also known as a tumour. As the cancer grows, cells can spread to other parts of the body and this can then become life-threatening. The one stop service at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital follows the most recent guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

If you have any changes to your breast, you should make an appointment to see your GP straight away.
