magine the feeling you get when you are about to go out on stage, guitar in hand, ready to give the screaming crowd exactly what they want. And then there’s nobody there. Except for one extremely unimpressed man, standing by himself, bored and disappointed. This is exactly what happened to Stoke-on-Trent indie-rock band Sherry Counsellers when they were first starting out. “We once played a gig to one person in a bar who booed us the whole night,” laughs lead vocalist Keith Mellor. “It had snowed and nobody could get to the venue, but we struggled through like the professionals we are and he thought we
were a blues band. He was not impressed.” But it has not always been doom and disaster for the five-piece outfit. The Sherry Counsellors boast a selection of songs they have penned themselves, as well as having their name in lights playing at the O2 and Liverpool’s Cavern and providing part of the soundtrack to an episode of Hollyoaks. The band is made up of five average guys from Stoke and was founded in September 2010. Keith Mellor takes on the lead vocals with the help of Chris Dunleavy who also plays the guitar, alongside Matt Lewis. Chris Reynolds takes the stage with both the bass and the
trumpet, with newest addition Steve Handley on the drums. Their sound is alternative indierock, with an electric mix of influences, supporting The Hoosiers on tour. Keith said: “I met Chris Dunleavy and we started writing some acoustic tracks together and then we decided to expand and some more instruments involved. We asked Matt to join, initially as a drummer, but when he played the guitar solo to Sweet Child of Mine, he was our new guitarist. “We drafted Chris Reynolds in later down the line, as we knew from way back and he brought much needed energy, a trumpet and a kilt to the party. Steve is our very new recruit who has
definitely added old school rock into the Sherry Counsellor sound. “The reason to be in a band for me is that writing and performing your own songs was a dream since I was a small child, so to get to live out your dreams is very special.” The Sherry Counsellors have racked up a number of credible experiences and impressive performances both in and out of Staffordshire. Keith said: “We have enjoyed many gigs for many different reasons. Playing the O2 was very special due the size of the gig. We have played in a bombed out church in Liverpool, as well as the Cavern, which for me as a Beatles fan was very special indeed.
“I think that playing to your homecrowd in Stoke is always very special. Our favourite venue in Stoke-on-Trent is without question The Sugarmill – always a massive show and it brings out the best in us, especially with all your family and friends in the audience.” With plans in the pipeline for a summer festival appearance, new music releases and a huge homecoming show at The Sugarmill, things are looking bright for the band.
