Do you have a passion for policing or science and an interest in how criminal investigations are undertaken? Do you want a career filled with challenges and variety? If so, one of our degrees in Forensic and Crime Sciences could be perfect for you. But which one?

Forensic Science teaches you how to apply scientific methods in analysing evidence recovered from crime scenes, to assist in solving crimes. So if you are interested in techniques like using gas chromatography to identify seized drugs, and using DNA profiling to help identify a suspect from a bloodstain, Forensic Science could be the right degree for you. If you want more practical experience in crime scene processing, laboratory evidence analysis and investigative techniques, then Forensic Investigation might be more suitable. And if you’re interested in the way investigative leads are used to build cases against criminals, our degree in Policing and Criminal Investigation is probably best, so you can learn how to interview suspects, build prosecution case files and apply policing policy to operational practice.

We have a unique partnership with Staffordshire Police giving you the opportunity to work in real-world forensics by attending crime scenes, processing evidence and/or carrying out impactful research and development.

Which Level is For You? – Foundation Year, BSc (Hons) or MSci? If you don’t have the necessary academic qualifications to study a degree, you can start with our foundation year which is taught at 2 local colleges, Stafford College and Stoke College. The BSc programme is the traditional three year undergraduate degree, or 4 years if you chose the sandwich placement option, where you will gain theoretical and practical experience in your chosen field. The MSci programme is a four year integrated undergraduate degree, where in addition to everything learnt on the BSc, you will also experience postgraduate level study increasing your depth of knowledge and developing your professionalism.

PLACEMENT YEAR

On the BSc (Hons) route you can opt for the sandwich version of each course. By doing this, you’ll complete a one-year placement with Staffordshire Police Forensic Department as part of our ongoing partnership, with another police

force or other organisation working within the criminal justice system, with other forensic providers or with other laboratory-based employers.

HANDS-ON LEARNING

Our courses are very practically orientated so that you can fully appreciate the operational relevance of the theory you learn. The wealth of practical experience you will gain throughout your degree will make you a very attractive candidate in future job applications.

CRIME SCENE HOUSE

We have a dedicated Crime Scene House Facility, made up of six rooms that resemble a typical domestic home. Attached to the house is an Observation Room, which is the control centre for the CCTV system that runs throughout the house, allowing you to receive instant feedback from your lecturers.

SHOWCASING YOUR THIRD YEAR PROJECT

Each year our third year students are given the opportunity to present their Independent Research Project at the annual student exhibition, GradEx. Here experts and employers from organisations with a forensic and investigative focus judge the quality of the research and award prizes to the best work. You will have the chance to explain your cutting edge research, which could be a game changer in the field, to representatives from professional bodies, national organisations and future employers. Previous presentations have been such high quality that those students have been offered mentoring opportunities and invited to job interviews.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

You will be given the opportunity to undertake research that will advance the knowledge and understanding in your chosen field. This will directly inform the curriculum and potentially inform best practice in industry.

POLICING AND CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION

FORENSIC SCIENCE

Our Forensic Investigation degree courses provide students with practical experience in crime scene processing, laboratory evidence analysis and investigative techniques. Students will gain expertise in: developing forensic strategies to maximise evidence recovery; developing advanced photography skills; gaining experience in the recovery and processing of digital evidence. You will have the opportunity to undertake research to further the field of forensic investigation alongside staff who have extensive experience in a wide range of specialisms.

Our Policing & Criminal Investigation degree courses provide students with ‘real world’ practical experience in the interviewing of victims, witnesses and suspects, a wide range of investigative techniques and the building of prosecution case files . Students will gain vital expertise in the criminal law, policing policy and operational practice. You will have the benefit of working with experts from different specialisms of policing including drug investigation, covert policing, murder investigation and neighbourhood policing.

Our Forensic Science degree gives students the theoretical and practical skills needed for the ‘crime scene to court’ process. The degree covers aspects of Chemistry (such as drug and accelerant analysis), Biology (such as DNA profiling and blood pattern analysis) and Criminalistic Methods (such as fingerprint and document analysis) as well as crime scene processing. On completion of the degree, students have strong analytical and critical thinking skills, and are able to present themselves and their work confidently whether in small or large group environments or in a moot court.

CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY AND SPECIALIST FACILITIES Our Forensic and Crime Science Department here at Staffordshire University has a truly incredible range of equipment for you to use, not just in your practical sessions, but also in your third year research project. Our specifically designed Science Centre

includes specialist laboratories, interview suites, and dedicated specialist equipment where you will get hands on experience in using a range of cutting edge technologies.

We also have a dedicated Crime Scene House fitted with CCTV and two-way audio which gives the option for both internal and external crime scenes, so you can hone your investigative and crime scene examination skills. Having so many specialist facilities at your disposal will ensure that upon completion of your degree you are work ready and able to work in a range of different environments.

SUBJECT SPECIFIC DEPARTMENT We are a Forensic and Crime Science Department, encompassing Policing, Forensic Sciences and Investigation.

This means that amongst the staff that teach you during your course will be your Award Leader, your personal tutor and your project supervisor.

We will get to know you really well, and will be able to support you accordingly.

DEVELOPING YOUR TALENTS Small group working enables focussed and individual feedback that will help you to develop your knowledge and skills set. Expertled sessions will also give you the opportunity to cultivate expertise in areas that most interest you.

MIRRORING THE WORKPLACE You will work to standards and adhere to practices employed by forensic and investigative agencies, so that you will be gaining realworld competencies at every stage. Examples of these include our adherence to laboratory standard operating procedures, the application of ISO accreditation processes (17025 and 17020) and the completion of standard police forms (MG Forms 1 - 21).

Although the practical and skills based nature of our course means that some emphasis is placed on coursework, we also use formal examinations and class tests to assess knowledgebased and problem-solving elements across all levels.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT SATISFACTION ON ALL DEGREES AND AT ALL LEVELS We achieved over 90% overall satisfaction for all of our degrees in the National Student Survey 2015 (completed by all final year undergraduate students). We achieved scores of 100% for BSc(Hons) Forensic Science, 93% for BSc(Hons) Policing and Criminal Investigation and 91% for BSc(Hons) Forensic Investigation. OUR BRILLIANT PEOPLE

My Forensic Science degree at Staffordshire University has given me an array of skills and experience that has helped me to gain my current role in the pharmaceutical industry. The hands on approach to studying meant that I was able to put theory into practice and get a better understanding of my subjects; this was particularly useful in lab scenarios as I am soon to be undertaking a PGCE in Chemistry.

I am now a Forensic Investigator for West Mercia Police and I have found that the theoretical knowledge and practical skills gained during my course have been vital in helping me secure full time employment in a forensic environment.

I really enjoyed the range of subjects that were taught and being able to give myself some direction by choosing optional modules that suited me along with a dissertation topic I was interested and enthusiastic about.

From my degree experience I learnt how to balance both my studies and my extra-curricular activities in order to get the best of both worlds, along with valuable practical experience, which has helped to get me where I am today.

The Forensic and Crime Science department provides each student with enormous support and a platform for them to excel and grow as a person and build fundamental skills to thrive in a work place environment.

The course provides an excellent balance of a range of forensic science disciplines as well as the core investigative knowledge which I have found to be critical in succeeding in my current job. Specifically the degree provides students with an in depth background of forensics and a range of practical skills, such as processing crime scenes in Staffordshire University’s very own crime scene house.

Another important aspect is the relationship the department has with forensic and policing organisations.

There is a current placement scheme set up with Staffordshire Police which provides students with real experience and a chance to design research products to work in an operational environment. The lecturers have distinguished backgrounds and practical experience within the forensic and policing areas which are passed on to the students – this is much more valuable than a standard forensic textbook!

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Staffordshire University and I have gained the most out of my course which has helped me succeed in starting a forensic career.

I graduated from Staffordshire University in 2014 with a 2:1 BSc (Hons) Forensic Investigation. I am currently working as a Digital Forensic Examiner in a mobile phone department.

I thoroughly enjoyed my Forensic Investigation degree at Staffordshire University. In my three years I gained so much knowledge and experience. The practical side of the degree is fantastic, giving you the opportunity to attend mock crime scenes. Here you will seize evidence and then go on to analyse your exhibits in a laboratory.

Finally you will produce your evidence in court, and be cross examined as if you were a Reporting Scientist.

If it wasn’t for my degree I would not be where I am today. Staffordshire University introduced me to a research project scheme and, combined with my own determination, I was offered a temporary role in that organisation, where I have since been successful in a permanent position.

OUR BRILLIANT PEOPLE

Dean Northfield is a lecturer and module leader within the department of Forensic and Crime Science. He has a strong practitioner background in forensic investigation with over 10 years’ experience within Scientific Support for West Yorkshire Police. Working at both the National VIPER bureau, and forensic imaging unit has allowed Dean to gain a wealth of experience in major crime scene attendance, capture, documentation, specialist surveillance and public order.

Dean moved into a specialist forensic multimedia team with the purpose of processing and preparing digital evidence for court in ways that simplify and enhance complex evidence to be understood by juries. Dean has worked on many high profile investigations including murders, drug trafficking and riots for local, national and international agencies including many UK police forces, National Crime Agency and The Health and Safety Executive.

Juliet Prince is a lecturer within the Forensic and Crime Science department and ensures the integration of industry knowledge into the course by harnessing 30 years of policing experience. Her experience covers topic specific areas such as neighbourhood policing, partnership working and major investigations as well as an understanding of the current strategic challenges facing the delivery of policing.

Juliet is involved in research into how neighbourhood policing is adapting to financially driven change and also supports other research including the police use of mobile data. The outcomes of research are ultimately fed back into the courses and teaching to ensure that the course contains the most up to date and relevant information and knowledge.

Dean brings direct practical experience of working in all areas of police and forensic investigations into his everyday teaching. This includes best practice along with the realities of working within these organisations. Dean’s passion includes the development of new modules within the emerging area of forensic multimedia.

Julian Partridge is a lecturer within Forensic and Crime Sciences and module leader for several undergraduate and postgraduate modules. Julian worked for the Forensic Science Service for 28 years and ensures through his teaching that his experiences are utilised to benefit the student learning experience.

Dean has obtained funding for real world solutions within his specialist area, including the development of a presentation suite to coincide with government overhaul of the Criminal Justice System for digital and virtual courtrooms. Dean still undertakes consultancy for Police forces and private companies in the area of digital imaging and participates in exchange teaching for the ERASMUS programme across partner universities within Europe.

This includes information gained through both research and development of accredited analytical techniques within the field of forensic analytical chemistry, those gained through the recovery and analysis of trace evidence and as an expert witness.

Julian is currently involved with research projects involving a patented specimen capture device with potential use in sexual offence cases and within medical health care as well as developing packaging for improving the preservation of evidence relating to fire scene examination.

As well as that, we’re also investing £12m in a new Computing and Games facility. This project, called Digital Kiln, will merge beautiful learning space with state-of-theart technology to support all sorts of courses from Cyber Security to Games Design.

This investment is continuing the work we’ve already started to create great social spaces and easy access between the Students’ Union, halls of residence, and other facilities. We’ve committed to doubling the investment that’s already started to create enhanced facilities. Come 2016, it’s going to have the buzz and the feel of the edge-of-city campus that students want.
