Letter From The Editor As 2013 howls in, we are excited to bring to print our new publication! The family at Pet Pages Atlanta is enthusiastic about our pets. We are pet parents ourselves and we want to know the best pet services and products that the Metro Atlanta area has to offer. We want to educate, support local businesses, and know who to trust when it comes to the lives that rely on us to take care of them. During the past few months, we have attended events, met interesting people, found amazing rescue organizations, and built the foundation for long lasting friendships and partnerships. We have explored Metro Atlanta counties for pet friendly locations and businesses. We found so much more than we expected. This issue is loaded with Pet Safety Tips, Emergency Numbers, Pet Friendly Places, and informative articles by local experts. The pet community here is strong and full of passionate individuals who want to make a difference. Please support the over 80 non-profit organizations listed here that do so much to help our pet companions. I extend a ‘Thank You’ to my family and friends for their patients

and encouragement during this journey and, my gratitude to our advertisers for their support and belief in this publication. When you visit their shops or businesses, let them know you saw them in Pet Pages. And, if your favorite pet business is not listed here, tell them about us. Our family will continue to fill these pages with useful and enjoyable information for your family.

We will continue to publish new editions of Pet Pages Atlanta including new areas, so people all over Metro Atlanta will benefit from learning about the impassioned pet businesses near them. Look for our summer edition, visit our website to see the online Events Calendar and check for our iphone app. Mary Gayle, Stacy Tango (cover girl), Hallie and Lilly

Houseplants To keep pets away from your plants, mix some lemon juice with water and place in a spray bottle. Periodically spritz your plants with the mixture --they’ll love the humidity, and your pets will avoid the citrus smell. Another way to keep pets away is to use citrus peelings, cayenne pepper or pine cones as a mulch around your plants. 8

Great Health Starts with Great Nutrition

protein (chicken, beef, salmon, etc.) as opposed to unnamed sources (poultry, meat, fish) or vegetable sources (soy, peas, etc.) at the beginning of the ingredient list (the first five ingredients comprise about 80-90% of what’s in the food). Avoid low quality fillers (corn, wheat, soy, by-products, etc.), chemical preservatives (BHA, BHT, Propylene Glycol and Ethoxyquin are known carcinogens), artificial colors & flavors, and high carbohydrates. Know the source. It’s not enough to know the food has chicken instead of byproducts. Where and how was it raised and processed also has an impact on the quality of the food. Avoid ingredients that are pumped with antibiotics and hormones as these will pass through the food into your pet. Diet rotation is also important. Just as we get different nutrients from different foods, so do our pets. Feeding the same food (even if it’s high-quality) day in, day out, year after year can lead to problems. Find a few options that work for your pet and rotate them. Remember, there is no one “right” pet food for every pet. You have to sift through the marketing gimmicks and hype to find what is right for your pet. The benefits of a proper diet are almost endless. At Fido’s Market, we take the health of your pet seriously and are here to help you dig in and find the best diet for your pet.

W

hat you choose to feed your pet can be the single-most important decision you make for your pet. Feeding a high-quality diet can help you avoid painful and costly diseases later in your pet’s life. Hippocrates said “Let food be thy medicine” and we view it as both preventative and curative. Armed with some basic information, you will be able to make great choices. There are 4 main choices in commercially available types of food for your dog and cat: raw, dehydrated & freeze-dried, canned/wet, and kibble/dry. Raw food is the most species-appropriate for your dog and cat. It has come a long way in recent years in terms of convenience. You can now easily feed a diet that is most similar to the way he would choose if he could; the way he was intended to eat. Raw comes in pre-sized bulk blocks, patties, sausage links and bite-sized nibbles. Just defrost and feed. Dehydrated and freeze-dried foods are excellent choices to ensure your pet is getting the most nutrients out of what he’s eating. Just add water and watch him drool. Canned/wet is a convenient option, available in a variety of consistencies – shredded meats, chunky stews and pâté. Kibble/dry is the most convenient, but the least species-appropriate. There are a lot of choices— some very good, some not so good and some just downright shameful. Once you’ve decided what type of food(s) you’re going to use, understanding what’s actually in them is key. Quality can vary dramatically from brand to brand, and even among the same brand. Look for named sources of animal

See Your Veterinarian At Least Twice A Year For A Happier, Healthier Pet!

What To Expect: Examination: Your veterinarian will examine your pet’s eyes, nose, ears, mouth and coat for any external evidence of problems. Your veterinarian will listen to your pet’s heart and lungs and palpate its abdomen for any abnormalities. Your pet will be weighed and have its conformation checked (muscles and joints) and a proper diet and proper supplements will be discussed. Parasites: Your veterinarian will check for evidence of external parasites i.e. fleas, ticks, mites, and lice. Internal parasites - common ones are heartworm and intestinal worms - will be checked with blood and stool exams. These exams will help you and your veterinarian select the most appropriate and the safest parasite prevention program.

Vaccinations: Dogs and cats must be vaccinated to prevent rabies by Florida law. There are many additional vaccines available which are given commensurate with your pet’s potential risk. These must be considered if your pet spends time outside, goes to kennels or groomers, goes to dog parks or travels out of state. One size does not fit all, so it is very important to discuss this with your family veterinarian before committing to a ‘package’ that your pet may not need. Ask your veterinarian the most effective ways to keep your pet healthy. This includes how to care for its teeth, how to protect its joints and how to care for the senior pet. If your pet has not been spayed or neutered, arrange to have one of these crucial surgeries done both to prevent many future problems with your pet and to help reduce the serious overpopulation problem we currently face.

The Art of Making Difficult Decisions

re you a pet owner struggling with the A question “What should I do?” Are you facing complex pet care decisions and feel

ditionally, it is important to look objectively at the possible outcomes, with as much detachment as possible. This will allow you to evaluate what IS and IS NOT acceptable to you. What CAN you live with? What CAN’T you live with? As you gain a better understanding of your situation and needs, you will also gain a sense of clarity and peace of mind. You will experience an emotional shift, a movement from feelings of conflict, hopelessness, confusion or blame to a sense of cooperation, compassion and empowerment. You will know that you CAN handle the situation, regardless of the outcome and you will ultimately have what is necessary to move forward in making your best decisions for you and your pet. Provided by Corinna M. Murray, DVM, Certified Professional Coach (404) 661-2263.

overwhelmed, confused or conflicted? Are you afraid of making a choice that might lead to regret or do you have regrets from previous decisions made that are holding you back, keeping you stuck? No decision is a decision, by default. It often does lead to regret and a sense of powerlessness. In order to move forward with any difficult decision, it is most important to accept and understand the circumstances you are facing. It is also important to understand what personal values you have that need to be honored in your decision making process. This is a critical part of every choice we make in order to have peace with those decisions and in order to make those choices from a place of compassion and wisdom rather than fear or conflict. “D

It’s Not Just Bad Breath ...Pet Dental Hygiene

oc, I don’t understand, dogs lived in the wild for years and never had dental issues, why are we having these problems?” Pets like Chihuahua’s were never a wild breed of dog, and any “wild dogs” only lived for 2-5 years. Our companion pets live for 10, 15, or even 20 years. That’s a long time to go without brushing your teeth. Far and away, the most commonly diagnosed disease a Veterinarian sees is periodontal disease. Periodontal disease isn’t fun to talk about, but it affects the quality of life for millions of pets each year. Every day, I talk to my clients about their pets’ dental issues. I show them the plaque, gingivitis, tartar, infections and bad breath. Dogs and cats don’t eat a lot of processed sugars like we do, so it is unusual for them to develop cavities. It is common for the gums and structures supporting the teeth to become infected or diseased. Some disease we can see by looking in a dog’s mouth and some requires dental radiography. Whatever disease is present, it is important to remember that dogs almost never stop eating due to dental disease. There may be significant disease, infections, broken or missing teeth, and appetite is normal. Recently, I extracted 33 teeth during a routine dental visit. None of them required significant drilling or

instrumentation. They were all so loose that all I had to do was gently pull with my fingers. That dog was eating and drinking normally, and had not lost any weight. He came in because he smelled funny. The smell was the infection in his mouth. Prevention of periodontal disease involves at-home care as well as routine dental cleanings performed under anesthesia. At-home care is all about brushing. we all like to believe that chewing on hard bones, dental treats, etc. will keep a dogs teeth clean. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Brushing every other day is required in most cases to slow the progression of periodontal disease. Remember, when cleaning your pet’s teeth, it should be a fun experience for your dog. They should be slowly introduced to brushing in a way that is easily acceptable to them. They should be rewarded for allowing brushing. Start with 5-10 second sessions, and gradually build up toward full brushing. Consult your veterinarian at annual visits, and have routine cleanings performed before there are major problems. Remember February is Pets Dental Health Month…..Happy Brushing!!!

breed or even a “mutt” is the perfect match for your family. You will have a choice of adult dog or cat versus puppy or kitten. Of course shelters have many puppies and kittens for adoption. But when you adopt an adult dog or cat, their size, temperament and personality are already established, so there are no surprises. Many shelter dogs are trained to know basic obedience commands -- and cats are socialized so they are comfortable with people and other pets. The shelter may give you a trial period to make sure the dog or cat is right for you. While returning a pet should be a last resort, sometimes things just don’t work out. Most shelters allow a trial period in which they will take the dog or cat back if the match is not a good one.

local humane society, animal shelter or rescue group. There are many reasons to adopt a shelter pet. Here are five of them: You will save a life. Millions of cats and dogs are euthanized each year. In tough economic times, job losses and foreclosures force even more people to abandon or surrender their pets. Every cat or dog you adopt makes a difference. You will save money. Rescue groups are not in business to make money. Shelter adoption fees are very reasonable. And most shelters spay or neuter, micro-chip, and provide all vaccinations before adoption. Shelters may also offer special promotions such as Adopt A Shelter Cat Month (June), Adopt A Shelter Dog Month (October) and Adopt A Senior Pet Month (November) where adoption fees are further reduced. You will have many pets – and breeds – to choose from. If your heart is set on a specific breed of dog or cat, don’t rule out adopting from a shelter. There are many breed-specific rescue

Just A Dog

From time to time people tell me, “Lighten up, it’s just a dog,” or, “That’s a lot of money for just a dog.” They don’t understand the distance traveled, time spent, or costs involved for “Just a dog.” Some of my proudest moments have come about with “Just a dog.” Many hours have passed with my only company being “Just a dog,” and not once have I felt slighted. Some of my saddest moments were brought about by “Just a dog.” In those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “Just a dog” provided comfort and purpose to overcome the day. If you, too, think its “Just a dog,” you will probably understand phrases like “just a friend,” “Just a sunrise,” or “Just a promise.” “Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. “Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person. Because of “Just a dog” I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. For me and folks like me, it’s not “Just a dog.” It’s an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. “Just a dog” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughs away from myself and the worries of the day. I hope that someday people can understand it’s not “Just the dog.” It’s the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “Just a man or woman.” So the next time you hear the phrase “Just a dog,” smile, because they “Just Don’t Understand.” - Author Unknown 23

Remember Me

“Remember me always, but do not grieve for me too long. I have tried always to comfort you in times of sorrow, and have made every effort to add joy to your life. I never wanted to cause you pain. Peace for me is certain now, and I suspect I will have eternal sleep in the earth I have loved so well. Please, after your period of grieving for me, make room in your heart for another. You are the kind of human being that should always have a friend like me to love. Your kind and gentle heart should not be wasted on my memory for too long. Give your love to another. I know your new friend will never take my place, because we had something very special. It may not be quite the same, but a new devoted and loving companion will in time, become special in their own way. You loved me very much and I loved you. My spirit will always be with you, and no matter how deep my sleep, my grateful heart will always remember you.” -Author unknown 24

Georgia Jail House Dogs

eorgia Jail House Dogs (GJHD) is a unique rehabilitation program for inmates and homeless dogs. This is a non-profit organization incorporated to rehabilitate Georgia’s county jail inmates and local shelter dogs through a good behavior incentive program. GJHD provides county inmates a new sense of self-worth. They develop skills to care for and train at-risk shelter dogs. These dogs become more adoptable to loving and caring homes.

to seek employment with the knowledge dog care, grooming, and training. Most importantly, at-risk shelter dogs of all kinds gain the ultimate prize of program participation. Their lives are saved from death row. GJHD utilizes every county’s euthanasia list to give a second chance at life for dogs and carefully selects inmates that match the GJHD participation criteria. Our community’s homeless dogs that enter the program from local county shelters get the chance of a life time to become highly adoptable and be the number one pick for loving and caring homes. The dogs undergo a three to six week program of humane training and upon completion become Canine Good Citizens. This program offers the opportunity for the community to become involved with the GJHD program through dog sponsorships and donations to the GHJD program within its county jail. gajailhousedogs@gmail.com

GJHD’s goal is to have as many Georgia county jails participate in the program that improves communities and spreads awareness to rehabilitate both inmates and dogs. The success from this “prison dog” program encourages inmates to reach for a new ‘leash’ on life and give a sense of unconditional love that can change Georgia’s communities not only by lowering crime rates, but recidivism as well. Also, inmates gain additional vocational skills, so when they are released, they will be enabled

Rabies On The Rise

abies has been on the rise recently, R but the disease is preventable. All pets in Georgia are required by law

cination to keep everyone safe. Provided by Midway Animal Hospital. Georgia requires rabies vaccination yearly, but the counties govern the specifics. For example you can license a dog or cat using a three year rabies vaccine in Fulton County. Be sure to check with your local county animal control service for specifics where you live. to be vaccinated against rabies when they are twelve weeks of age or older. This law protects pets and their owners alike. Rabies is a virus that can be spread through the saliva or brain tissue of an infected animal to humans and other animals through open cuts, eyes or mouth. Rabies can infect any warm blooded mammal, but is commonly seen in raccoons, bats, foxes and skunks. Rabid animals may act tame, display strange behavior, avoid food or water, foam at the mouth, have trouble moving or become aggressive. Avoid any wild or stray animals that act unusual and report it to your county Animal Control office. Rabies can be prevented if medical treatment is started soon after contact with the rabies virus, but if left untreated, rabies is always deadly for both humans and animals. Keeping pets up to date on their rabies vaccination will prevent your pet from getting rabies and spreading it to you or other pets. Rabies vaccinations can only be performed by a licensed veterinarian in the state of Georgia. Pets must be examined to make sure that they are healthy enough to be vaccinated. If they are not healthy, the vaccine will not be effective and they will not be protected. Contact your veterinarian to schedule your pet for their rabies vac-

Give Your Animal A Voice

n our state, there are more than 200,000 healthy, adoptable animals that are euthanized each year because they are unwanted or they are lost and their family is unable to find them. Please don’t allow your pet to become part of this statistic. One very simple way of reuniting you and your pet is to have your animal microchipped. Microchipping offers pet owners the only permanent method of identification. It is an inexpensive form of identification that stays with the animal for their entire life. Fortunately, animal control facilities in our state are required to scan all cats and dogs that are picked up as strays. You do not want your animal to be left without a voice when they are away from home. Although collars and tags are good forms of identification, they can be removed or get lost over time. Even

if your animal typically stays inside or close to home, you never know when something could happen that would cause your beloved pet to stray.

4 Reasons to Microchip Your Pet

• The only permanent method of pet identification • Best chance of your pet returning to you after going missing • Quick and painless procedure, similar to a vaccination • Lasts for the lifetime of you pet Article Provided by Georgia SPCA, www.GeorgiaSPCA.org, 1175 Buford Highway, suite 109, Suwanee, Georgia 30024. The Horse’s Prayer

I’m only a horse, dear Master, but my heart is warm and true, And I’m ready to work my hardest, for the pleasure of pleasing you. Good corn and hay and water, are all I wish to ask. And a warm dry bed to rest on, when I’ve finished my daily task. Make sure my harness fits me and let my head go free For then when the roads are hilly, I can put out my strength you see. Don’t strike me in needless anger, if I’m slow to understand, But encourage my drooping spirits with a gentle voice and hand. Finally O my master when my health and strength are gone, When I’m getting old and feeble, and my life’s long work is done, Don’t sell me to cruel owners, to be slaved to my last breath, But grant me the untold blessing of a quick and painless death; That, as you have always found me a patient and loyal friend, The years of my faithful service, may be crowned by a peaceful end… I plead in the name of my Saviour, Who cares when the sparrows fall, Who was born in a lowly stable, and knows, and loves us all ! 29

Understanding Food Allergies in Your Pets

llergic food reactions only develop with repeated exposure to food proteins over time. Unlike environmental allergies (atopy) food allergies are not directly linked to any specific breed and pets can start showing signs as early as 5 months of age. These include: itching and redness of the skin and ears, ear and skin infections, vomiting and diarrhea. Some ingredients are more likely to cause food allergies than others and for dogs these are beef, dairy products, chicken, lamb, fish, chicken eggs, corn, wheat, and soy. For cats, it’s beef, dairy and fish. As you may have noticed, the most common offenders are the most common ingredients in commercial dog foods. Consulting Veterinarians will need a thorough medical history of the pet, including a complete list of all the pet foods and treats that they are currently or previously eaten. The Veterinarian

will then likely select a diet that contains protein and carbohydrate sources that the pet has not eaten before (novel food source). Owners can then choose to feed their pet either a special commercially prepared diet or a homemade diet. If homemade diets are used, it is essential that they consult with their Veterinarian to ensure it is balanced. Regardless of the diet used, it must be the only thing the pet eats for at least 12 weeks. This means no treats, flavored medications, rawhide or pig's ears. During the “food elimination trial period short-term itch relief may be gained with essential fatty acids, shampoos, antihistamines or steroids, but elimination of the products from the diet is the only long-term solution. books

My Best Friend The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. A man’s dog stands by him in prosperity and poverty, in health and sickness He will sleep on the cold ground where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master’s side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. -When all other friends desert he remains. - When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. 36

A Dog’s Plea Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than this loving heart of mine. Do not break my spirit with a stick, for although I might lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn. Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when the sound of your footsteps falls upon my waiting ear. Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life. And, my friend, when I am very old and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, don’t make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun. Please see to it that my life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands. - With Unconditional Love,

ACKERMAN - Home Security

n the world of Home Security, people typically want to protect their families, homes, assets, and PETS. For the true pet lover, your little buddy is just another family member. Like other family members, you would like to take every step you can to keep that little guy safe. That’s why it’s very important to pay attention to the design of you Home Security System. Often I design systems for people without pets. They will simply put sensors on their doors, sometimes windows, and place a couple of motion sensors in primary areas of concern. Unfortunately I find that people with pets usually try to cut corners by using the same basic design.

As a pet owner, you strongly need to consider including as part of your monitored system Smoke/Heat detection on every level of your home. You also need to have Carbon Monoxide detectors placed near any gas devices in your home, and in the hallways outside of bedrooms. When your pets are home alone, the standard noise maker smoke detectors preinstalled in your house will not be able to save your loved ones from a fire or gas leak. With these items tied into your alarm system, you can be assured that someone is keeping your pets safe 24-7. What’s your pet’s life worth to you?

WHICH SOLID GOLD DOG FO

The Cute Story Eighteen and a half years ago, Sissy, the owner of Solid Gold, was given a Dane mix to foster. Her mother was a black Dane. Her father was a traveling man. She was about three months old. Sissy already had an adult Dane and was fostering two more adult Danes. So what’s another dog! Sissy took the little dog to the vet to get it fixed. The vet asked her name. She didn’t have one, so the vet wrote down BB for Black Bitch. She became BB. She got all her puppy shots there. A month later, the man returned to pick up the “foster”. “You can’t take my dog. She found a forever home,” he was told. BB remained with Sissy for 18 1/2 years. In November, she was taken to the vets for her eighteenth birthday for a Wellness check-up. This was only her second trip since she never received any other shots, but the puppy shots. She was fine. The vet couldn’t believe this was the same Dane mix he had spayed 18 years before. “What are you feeding?” he asked. “Solid Gold, of course, Sissy replied Six months later, BB went to sleep and crossed the Rainbow Bridge. She had been fed Solid Gold SunDancer dry dog food for the last eight years of her life, and Solid Gold Sea Meal all her life. Danes don’t live that long. BB did. You are what you eat, the vet said. How true for Solid Gold. 40 40 40

lack of activity, and inadequate mental or physical stimulation. They may exhibit destructive behaviors or cry and bark for hours on end. These behaviors are caused by lack of activity, inadequate mental or physical stimulation. Daycare provides a clean and safe environment. The difference between doggy daycares and dog parks is a controlled environment. Dog parks are a great asset to any community, but you never know who is going to be there. Will the dogs be good players? Have they all had the necessary vaccinations? What happens if dogs do not get along? Most daycares require a test day to ensure that each dog will be successful in a social environment. Dogs are supervised by staff, trained in understanding canine communication. It makes your dog just plain happy to be in a stimulating environment, playing with other dogs and people. At the end of the day you will have a pup that is happy, relaxed and tired from playing all day.

is having a great time doing dog stuff. Instead of sitting at home alone waiting for you, they are playing, being socialized, and having a great time. Dogs get to enjoy a safe, healthy and fun atmosphere with lots of interaction, both with other dogs and with people.

Dogs, by nature, are highly social animals. Letting dogs interact with other dogs and humans of all ages is one of the most important things responsible dog owners can do to help their dog develop into and remain a calm, confident dog unlikely to bark, bite or become fearful or aggressive. Regular play with other dogs builds your dog’s confidence and improves his ability to communicate and interact. Running, playing, and getting a good workout with friends is a fantastic way to keep pets in good physical condition. Active dogs are given a proper outlet for all of that energy. These behaviors are caused by a

770-888-9300 Pet Travel Checklist Before taking your dog on your next trip: 4 Prepare your dog for a long car ride by taking him on shorter trips beforehand. 4 Feed your dog lightly before beginning a trip, about one-third the normal amount. 4 Take fresh water for your dog to drink. 4 Travel with a leash but remove it after placing your dog in a crate, as it could become entangled. 4 Check with airlines, hotels and campgrounds regarding dog restrictions that may apply. 4 Pack a copy of your dog’s health records and rabies vaccination certificate. Include a recent photo and physical

description and consider a microchip to aid in identification. 4 Add a tag to your dog’s collar that includes a telephone number where you can be reached if your dog gets separated from you. 4 Never sedate your dog during travel unless your veterinarian recommends it. Some medications can trigger equilibrium, respiratory, cardiovascular or temperature regulation problems. 4 Ask your veterinarian to examine your dog to make sure he is in good health. It is especially important that your dog is protected against infectious tracheobronchitis (ITB), a highly contagious respiratory disease in dogs. Contact with other dogs carrying this disease-causing bacteria could put your pet at risk. 46

It takes about 5-10 minutes for the sedative to take effect depending on the condition of the pet. Afterwards a final injection is given usually in the front arm or rear leg and this relieves your pet. Every situation is different but this is generally the procedure. We do recommend that you make preparations with your mobile veterinarian prior to the procedure for aftercare including cremation or burial at a local pet cemetery. Most pets get a bit of anxiety going into the veterinary office due to the sounds and smells of other animals, and just being in an unfamiliar place. This is not what we want for our loyal companions when it is time to help them transition. In home euthanasia allows you to hold your pet, if you like. Basic Grooming Tips Your dog’s ears can be a breeding ground for bad bacteria and infections. Be sure to frequently check his ears to ensure they are clean and dry. Daily at-home care of your dog’s teeth is essential to his health. Beyond mouth infections and tooth loss, the bad bacteria in the gum line and mouth can easily enter the bloodstream and travel to other organs in the body. Left untreated, periodontal disease will affect the heart, kidneys and liver, and can lead to organ failure. Keeping your dog’s nails trimmed is also essential to his health. Overgrown nails can break easily and be painful. They can also cause difficulty walking and contribute to arthritis.

rooming isn’t just about making your dog look good. Keeping your dog properly groomed helps keep your dog healthy.

Keeping your dog’s hair tanglefree is essential to his well-being. If he is matted, the mats can pull on the skin, causing irritation that he then chews, and it becomes a hotspot and gets infected. The infection is a symptom, the cause is poor grooming habits. There is not a “one size fits all” brush or comb; each tool is designed to do a specific job. It’s important that you have the right tools for the job (you often need more than one). Bathe your dog as frequently as necessary. For some dogs, this is once every month or two; for others it’s weekly. Choose a gentle, all-natural shampoo that won’t dry or damage his skin or coat. Be sure to rinse thoroughly.

A Lesson In Humility If you can start the day without caffeine, If you can get going without pep pills, If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains, If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles, If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it, If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time, If you can overlook it when those you love take it out on you, when, through no fault of yours, something goes wrong, If you can ignore a friend’s limited education and never correct him, If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend, If you can face the world without lies and deceit, If you can conquer tension without medical help, If you can relax without liquor, If you can say honestly that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed, color or politics, Then, my friend, you are almost as good as your dog. -Anonymous

10 Easy Pet Care Tips 1. Keep your dog on a leash every time you go for a walk. Even the best-behaved dog can forget his training if he encounters an unfamiliar smell or sound, another dog, or a squirrel that simply must be chased. 2. Keep your cat inside all year round. Cats do not need to go out the way dogs do and will lead longer, safer lives if kept indoors. 3. Turn your pet into an easy rider. Take your puppy or kitten for short, uneventful rides so he will become accustomed to the car’s sounds and movement. 4. Check your pet’s water often. All pets — dogs, cats, birds, hamsters — need a steady supply of fresh water. 5. Feed your pet a diet that’s appropriate to his time of life. Puppies and kittens should eat pet food especially formulated for their growing bodies. Older pets need to beware of weight gain, and may need a different pet food than they enjoyed as younger adults. Discuss your pet’s changing dietary requirements with your vet.

6. Groom your pet regularly. Make it a part of his routine and he’ll come to expect it, maybe even welcome it as special time spent with you. What’s more, you’ll notice a decrease in shedding and an improvement in his skin and coat. 7. Never give your pet chocolate. It can be poisonous to both dogs and cats. 8. Learn which common house and garden plants are poisonous to pets. 9. Keep a copy of Pet Pages handy at all times. Accidents always happen when you least expect them. And if your pet requires emergency medical care, you’ll know who to call. 10. Please have your pet spayed or neutered! This inexpensive, permanent procedure helps reduce behavior and health problems — and prevents unwanted litters. Remember, there are too many homeless dogs and cats already! This information is in no way intended as a substitute for counseling and/ or treatment from a qualified veterinary practitioner. 65

Holiday Pet Dangers Holidays are the most dangerous time of the year for our pets. The two greatest dangers are lost pets and pet poisoning. Fall and Winter Holidays With the fall and winter holidays come many new faces, guests and dog sitters. Each time guests enter your home pets are exposed to new levels of stress, both positive and negative. Many pets are locked away from the guests while others are allowed to roam freely among the visitors. Doors, gates and garages are opened and closed at a feverish rate during the holidays. The opportunity for your pet to get out and explore is surely at paw! After the 4th of July, the winter holidays are the number one time of the year that pets are usually lost. So take some extra holiday precautions; Determine the Rules For the Season - If your pet is allowed to run free among the guests (which is only fair, its their house too!) make sure that you’re there to answer the door for every guest and introduce them to your pet. Also, you will want to be at the door every time it is open to be sure the pet does not escape. Keep a Closer Eye on Your Pets - If you can normally trust your pet in the yard for a few moments, try NOT to do this during these holidays. There are more people and pets in the streets and yards and lots of great smells that pets naturally love to investigate! All it takes is a unfocused moment

when you turn your head to greet someone and then it happens. Instead of a happy holiday, you have the opposite. Tell The Guests, and Especially the Children, the Rules for Your Pet what rooms they are or are not allowed, not to feed the pet scraps (if ten guests feed a 30 lb dog two scraps, you could have a very sick dog), and other rules of the house. Do not let children harass them. Do Not Ignore Your Pet - With the hustle and bustle of the holidays, pets become stressed - this is a time for extra attention. Take time every hour to stop and say hello! Do not forget to walk them, let them out, feed them, and change the litter box or other daily routines. Holiday Paraphernalia - Electric cords, tinsel, glass ornaments, candles, spray on-snow (some are non-toxic-read the label), ribbons, plastic or foil wrapping, etc. can be dangerous to your pet. Cover up or hide electric cords, never let your pet chew on them. Do not tie ribbons around pet’s necks or limbs. Watch out for rubber bands too. Do Not Try to Make Your Pet Vomit - Many times this can make the situation worse, as some poisons actually cause as much damage coming up as they do going down. Comfort your pet and make it feel secure, and immediately take it to a veterinarian. If you know what your pet ingested, take a sample of it to the veterinarian to help determine proper

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to the Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special, someone who was left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when suddenly one stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together‌ –Author Unknown 71
