Beyond academics, one of the major roles of education is to develop responsible workers, citizens, and family members. In order to encourage this with our students, we ask students to stretch themselves with academically rigorous coursework that aligns with a career focus. We also encourage students to act and speak in ways that demonstrate a high level of responsibility. By selecting coursework that is academically rigorous, students are taking responsibility for their own growth and development. They are recognizing the next level of coursework, which will challenge them and prepare them for the longterm goals that the school asks them to set. The rigorous coursework also encourages responsible behavior in terms of time management and study habits. When asked to develop and maintain a career-focus, students are assuming responsibility for themselves and for the community. Students begin to make connections between the learning in school and the responsibilities required in the work setting. For example, encouraging and developing behaviors regarding promptness and attendance in school carry over into responsible actions in the workplace. By developing skills and knowledge through specific career and technical education coursework, students become better able to carry out the responsibilities of specific jobs along a career path. Career-focused students lead to responsible employees. Finally, students who use and promote responsible language and action understand the difference between professional language and slang that may be used in informal settings. The use of professional language in school and the workplace demonstrates a level of commitment to the responsibilities associated with a professional position. It conveys a sense of dependability or reliability as young adults are asked to work independently with clients or organizations in the community. Parents can serve as a sounding board for students as students struggle with the many activities that they tend to take on throughout high school. Parents can talk about what it means to be responsible in the workplace or in school. Parents can help students prioritize activities based upon shortor long-term goals. Parents can work with students to develop careeroriented goals that help focus the student’s energy. High school serves as a great environment to build our students’ understanding and demonstration of responsibility. Parents serve as tremendous partners in helping students see the importance of responsible behavior in and out of school.
