E

very ad in a newspaper is designed to tell the reader that the business advertised is the best. The advertiser wants the reader to believe they have the best car dealership, or restaurant or florist shop, etc. Writers and artists and photographers and specialists of all types are employed to convince the consumers that the business advertised is tops in its field.

But ultimately newspapers or the advertising professionals don’t get to make that determination.

The people who truly have the power to make that decision are the readers, the customers, the consumers.

And, generally speaking the most effective method they have to make that known is their spending habits. Show us a successful business and we’ll show you someone who is likely very good at what they do.

But, there are other ways to determine a business’ success and that is what this publication is all about.

It is called Readers’ Choice for a reason. Every

year the Durant Democrat asks its readers what they consider to be the best businesses in their town.

Meet the Owners Larry Miller

Never say that a high school chemistry class is not important. It had a big impact on me.

After one day of class to start my senior year, I decided the periodic table of elements was not for me and transferred out of chemistry and in to journalism [the only other class available in that time slot]. It was the beginning of a career that has lasted more than 40 years.

My first newspaper job was in Seminole and I couldn’t believe I could get paid writing about high school sports, taking photos, and writing features. After every edition, I was eager to find my byline – By Larry Miller – at the top of all my stories. It was an exciting time.

From there I went to El Reno as a young editor and then to Edmond. Not long after moving to Edmond, I got a call from the Oklahoma City Times and ended up as one of their assistant city editors. About a year later, the Times was merged into the Daily Oklahoman and I

was moved to that staff.

A couple of years later I moved to Virginia to discover new lands and experiences in the newspaper business and spent the next 33 years working for papers mostly along the eastern seaboard.

I was lucky to work during the heyday of newspapers, and I’ve worked long enough to see many newspapers disappear as the internet became ubiquitous.

But newspapers are not finished.

While there have been many changes to our business, we can still offer people something the internet can’t – credibility chief among them.

Everyone needs information to conduct their lives and make good choices.

Newspapers still do that. We may not always do that with a daily newspaper, but most folks don’t need a newspaper to get daily news – they need newspapers to get LOCAL news. And that’s what we do.

It’s been a rewarding experience to

work so long in one industry. And who would have thought that I would end up in Oklahoma to finish out my career in my home state? Luck, perhaps. Or maybe it was just good chemistry.

Michael Clift Originally from Knoxville, Tenn., Michael Clift began his newspaper career at age 16 at the Knoxville News Sentinel, working mostly in newspaper operations.

His work there eventually led to IT director positions at the Killeen Daily Herald in Texas and at the Sumter Item in South Carolina.

He brings over 35 years of newspaper experience to the 3-person investor group that purchased the Durant Democrat in late 2017, along with newspapers in Altus and Frederick. All three partners work and live in the communities where they publish.

At his previous job in South Carolina, Best of the Best 2019

Clift built and maintained computer systems at five different newspaper sites in four different states, all of which operated simultaneously.

In addition to his current IT duties, Clift oversees the company’s distribution effort that is done through the mail and through newsstands in several locations in Durant.

He also oversees all printing operations, which is done offsite and delivered to our local sites.

Clift also oversees the production and distribution of the Kingston Chronicle, a free monthly newspaper that was launched nearly a year ago.

Meet the writers Matt Swearengin Matt Swearengin began his newspaper career in 1996 with the Bryan County Star, a weekly newspaper that was owned by his parents, Bob and B.L. Swearengin, in the 1970s when it was located on Buffalo Street in downtown Caddo.

As a child, his parents often took him to the newspaper office in Caddo and he remembers being fascinated when his dad developed prints in the dark room. He often went on photo shoots with his father and has many memories of traveling throughout the county as a small child.

Both of his parents later taught journalism at the University of Wyoming and Arkansas State University. They taught English at Southeastern in the 1990s.

Most of Matt’s college years were at Arkansas State University where he

studied psychology and journalism.

He finished at Southeastern and was a third-generation graduate of SE. He went to work for the Democrat in 1997 as a reporter and photographer.

He was promoted to senior staff writer in 2001 and has been editor since 2008. He is the primary photographer for the Democrat and started photographing sports last year.

He has earned many awards in writing and photography, including the AP Sweepstakes award for a spot-news photo in 2010.

Before his newspaper career, Matt worked at Swearengin Insurance Agency, a business founded by his grandfather, Rector Swearengin, in 1938 and now operated by his brother Mark.

Matt is an avid rural and urban explorer who enjoys visiting and photo-

graphing historic and forgotten places such as old cemeteries, farmhouses and abandoned buildings.

Michael Clements

Michael Clements is the Special Projects Editor for the Durant Democrat and editor of the Calera Citizen. He has more than 30 years of experience in community journalism split between six newspapers in four states.

Throughout his career Clements has kept the needs of the reader foremost in his mind.

“In my first job as a reporter for a weekly newspaper in Alabama, the publisher put a decal across the top of my computer monitor. It read, “What does this mean to the reader?” Clements said.

“The point was that regardless of how important or interesting I might find a story, if it didn’t provide something the reader could use it was a waste of his or her time and my employer’s resources.

“I have tried to keep that in mind ever since.”

Prior to taking his first paid newspaper

position, Clements spent a total of 13 years in the military split between the U.S. Army and U.S. Coast Guard. While in the Coast Guard he took up photography as a hobby. This grew into a nonpaid position with the Linden Democrat Reporter in Linden, Ala. As he chased fire trucks and police cars around south Alabama, camera and police scanner in hand, Clements began to learn the basics of reporting.

Next was a short stint as a volunteer reporter with a Christian magazine in Mobile, Ala., and eventually that first paid position with The Monroe Journal, in Monroeville, Ala. Clements has worked as a reporter, graphic designer, and editor at newspapers in Alabama, Florida, Texas and Oklahoma.

His reporting, writing and photography has won awards in three of those states and he is hoping for recognition

by the Oklahoma Press Association when they announce their 2019 awards this June.

Naifeh’s 52 Years ago, Charlie Naifeh hung his shingle on Dunn Barbeque Restaurant by State Highway 70 and the rest is history. A new chapter opened in 1980 when Charlie’s Best of the Best 2019

son, Dennis took over. Naifeh’s steaks are still prepared with the expertise that made the restaurant famous. Thick slices of prime beef are accented with homemade bread and cinnamon rolls that would make Grandmother turn green with envy.

Naifeh’s also specializes in seafood, lamb fries, frog legs, and farm raised catfish.
