BG’s Catch Few people can say they have accomplished their life’s goal by the age of 24. Bruce Greene, owner of BG’s Catch in Kingston, is the exception. “I worked for two years right out of college, saved some money, and then started this,” Greene says.

Bell Tower Event Center is located in Downtown Durant, Oklahoma, which makes it a great central location to host weddings and events.

Bell Tower was built in 1923 and is historically known as the First United Methodist Church.

The history of this building and its beautiful architecture make it a very unique venue for the Texoma area.

Leadership Durant, under the umbrella of the Durant Area Chamber of Commerce, is for professionals who desire to learn more about their community and develop or further enhance their leadership skills.

Individuals exit the class having identified and molded their specific leadership qualities.

The Leadership Durant class begins each July with a reception and is completed in June with graduation.

The class meets for one day each month with the exception of December. They participate in activities ranging from team building exercises to visiting and meeting area media, city, council and state officials.

They also tour area schools,

hospitals, major employers and other areas of interest such as museums and the Oklahoma City State Capitol. Additional activities and events are scheduled throughout the year to help raise money to donate to a deserving non-profit organization of that class’ choice. Leadership Durant also volunteers for various events and organizations throughout the year.

The first meeting for the new class will be a reception held in July with the first day of class in August.

Participants and their employers must commit to this program for it to be effective for each student.

Former class members include vice presidents of banks, business owners, teachers, managers, professors, attorneys, administrative personnel and more.

DYP membership meetings include social networking events like canvas paint nights along with dinner or lunch gatherings each month. Southeastern Oklahoma State University With an enrollment of 4,824 students in Fall 2019, Southeastern Oklahoma State University reached unprecedented heights.

Records indicate and University officials believe this to be the highest enrollment since the school opened its doors more than a hundred years ago.

In addition, for the second year in a row, the University did not raise tuition costs.

On January 31, 2020, Dr. Thomas Newsom was named as the 21st president of Southeastern, effective April 30, 2020.

hief of Police Don Hyde, Jr. has more than 25 years in municipal law enforcement service, holding positions of Police Officer, Lieutenant, and Chief of Police. He has received police management training at the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training, in Oklahoma City. Chief Hyde also holds an advanced certification through the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training.

Hyde was appointed as Chief of Police in Calera in May 2007. As chief, he is responsible for the overall operations of the police department, to include Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Communications and Community Services. During his tenure, he has instituted stringent hiring, retention and training practices.

Prior to his appointment in Calera, Chief Hyde worked for the City of Durant Police Department.

Chief Hyde and his department take a pro-active stand to crimes against women and children. Chief Hyde continues the tradition of the Calera Police Department, in keeping a close relationship with the community. Hyde, along with the rest of the Calera police department, takes pride in the fact that they are very active with the community and schools of not only the Town of Calera, but in Bryan County as a whole. Our “people caring for people” motto is a true now as it always has been and will continue to be.

During Chief Hyde’s career, he has been honored with multiple awards including: an honorary membership into the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, a Lifesaver Commendation from the Woodmen of the World, and appointment to the Oklahoma Chiefs of Police Association board, and the District Attorney’s Council (VAWA) Violence Against Women Act, board.

Don Hyde, Jr. Chief of Police for Calera, OK “The Calera Police Department’s mission is to provide professional and ethical police services in partnership with our citizens; to identify and solve the problems of crime, to reduce the fear of crime and prevent social disorder, thereby making Calera a safer community to live, work and play in.”

Danny Sherrer Danny Sherrer is a lifelong resident of Durant.

He started grade school at Russell Elementary on the Southeastern Oklahoma State University campus then finished his education 100 yards away, graduating

with his bachelor’s on the lawn of Montgomery with a degree in Sociology and minors in Business and Aviation.

Danny started working with his Dad, Leon Sherrer during college in their family-owned restaurant, Sherrer’s. His Dad and Uncle Lloyd Sherrer built the restaurant in 1948. He is married to Sarah Sherrer and has two children, Aaron and Lauren. Aaron works in the family business and Lauren is a Sophomore at Durant High School. He has two granddaughters, Emma and Marlee and his daughter-in-law, Mellissa Sherrer is an Assistant Principal at Washington Irving Elementary School.

He has been a member of Durant First Baptist Church for most of his life. Over the years Danny has pursued

many interests, from scuba diving, sailing, to piloting his own plane; however, he always took time to give back to his community. For many years Danny served as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop #618, chartered the First Baptist Church of Durant, where he ultimately received the Silver Beaver Award, a National Scouting Award presented to volunteers who have made significant contributions to the scouting movement over a number of years by the Circle Ten Council.

Additionally, Danny has actively worked to raise funds for local FFA and 4H youth groups while working with the Bryan County Friends of the NRA. In his free time, he enjoys bicycling, travel, and spending time with his family.

Jerry Tomlinson Jerry Tomlinson attended OU and OSU and is certified in Business Management. Mr. Tomlinson has served on the Durant City Council since 1998 and was Mayor for the City of Durant from 2001-2015.

Jerry serves on the Durant Community Facilities Authority as chairman. Jerry is a member of the Durant Chamber of Commerce and is a US Marine Corps veteran. Jerry is a Choctaw tribal member and recently retired from the Choctaw Nation. Jerry has a love for Durant and is committed to serving our city. Jerry and his wife, Linda, have called Durant home for 43 years.

The Rev. James Blagg The Rev. James Blagg has served St. John’s Episcopal Church, and the people of Southeast Oklahoma, for more than 31 years. When asked about the reason for his tenure in Durant Blagg jokes, “It’s because I hate moving.”

Blagg is a native of Brownwood, Texas and was confirmed in the Episcopal Church while a student at Texas Christian University in 1976. He earned a master’s degree in theology and pastoral studies from TCU the following year. He went on to attend the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn., where he completed graduate studies in theology in 1979.

Blagg took the pulpit at St. John’s in December of 1988.

He and his wife, Caroline, raised their two daughters, Heather and Catherine in Durant. They also each completed work on advanced degrees at Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

The presence of a college and the community’s strong commitment to its schools say a lot about the area, he said. He and his family have been happy in Bryan County.

“We respect and value (SOSU) as a regional provider of professional education,” Blagg said. “It is an important part of our community.”

According to Blagg, he came to Durant with a distinct calling to be a longterm presence. Prior to his arrival St. John’s had not had a priest for more than five years. During his tenure Blagg has been involved in a variety of community outreach and ministry projects including 12 step programs, homeless ministries and

work with the Durant Ministerial Alliance. Still, he said pastoring the people of St. John’s is his main calling.

“I firmly believe that God has called me to be a longterm pastor,” Blagg said.

St. John’s Episcopal Church More than 100 years ago the first Episcopal worship services in Durant were held in the Methodist church building. That small group of worshippers established St. John’s Episcopal Church which continues to be an active part of Bryan County’s spiritual community to this day.

The small congregation was served by a priest who traveled by rail from McAlester each week to serve the Durant congregation.

In 1900 the church acquired its first building, a one-room schoolhouse it bought and moved to the church’s current location at 515 W. Beech St. in Durant.

In 1928 the brick sanctuary, which is still in service, was built. In 1957 a classroom section added which was expanded and remodeled in 1973. During that remodel two small offices at the back of the sanctuary were opened up to add eight more pews. In 1986 the most recent construction was done with the addition of the Parish Hall.

Throughout its history St. John’s has stood as a spiritual outpost in Durant.

With its central location near downtown the church is ideally located to serve Durant’s diverse community. From hosting 12-step programs, to ministry to the poor and homeless to hosting traditional and theologically sound worship services, St.

John’s parishioners have been active in serving their community.

Each year St. Johns hosts its annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. This is a time to invite the community in for fellowship and fun in preparation for the beginning of Lent. St. John’s also holds traditional services each year for Christmas and Easter, two major feasts on the Christian calendar.

St. John’s has been a welcoming and safe home for those seeking a relationship with God through Jesus Christ for more than 100 years. The people and clergy of St. John’s remain committed to providing that ministry today.

Roger Joines Roger Joines was twenty-five when he became a Durant firefighter in 1989.

Over the years he worked his way up through the ranks.

He’s been an instructor and was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2011 and has been faithfully serving our city for 31 years. In 2016, Joines and his wife created and sent a Christmas card that became a viral sensation, which was

reported on ABC News and The Today Show. After six of the Durant Fire Department’s firefighters had babies within a six-month time span, the chief suggested putting the infants on the cover of their annual holiday card. The idea turned into a big hit shared across the country. The overwhelmingly positive response to the photos took everyone by surprise, but firefighters hope the pictures have helped portray a more rounded view of their first responders. “In a fire department there are so many things that make up the dynamic of an engine crew, certain shift, or even the department as a whole,” he wrote in a statement along with the photos.

“Training, shift duties, trauma, medical calls, wrecks, rescues, structure fires and brush fires are some of the many things that fire departments are called to do and in many cases, tend to define who they are as a fire department,” he added.

“However, if you ask many of the fire fighters in Durant, OK what defines them; they will say brotherhood and family. Our city is in good hands with Chief Joines.

She serves on the boards for the Durant Area Chamber of Commerce, Oklahoma Shakespearean Festival, United Way of Bryan County, Miss Southeast Oklahoma Pageant, and sits on the Durant Industrial Authority Economic Development Council. Stephanie resides in Durant with her better half of nearly twenty years, Michael, their cat, Miss Kitty, and twin dogs, Nova and Niko.
