Reason to go: Indonesia’s Raja Ampat Archipelago has the greatest concentration of marine life for a region of its size. Its local government has placed 50 percent of its coral reefs and mangroves within marine protected areas.

Reason to go: Your expedition leader is one of the top marine conservationists in the islands. Palau’s progressive government has also taken big steps to create comprehensive protected areas.

Imagine: Home to more than 1,300 species of fish, six of the world’s seven species of sea turtles and at least 450 species of reef-building coral (the Caribbean, by comparison, has fewer than 70), Raja Ampat is truly spectacular.

Imagine: The waters surrounding Palau teem with such marine life as sharks, turtles, tropical fish, manta rays and dugongs. On this snorkeling adventure, full days are spent in the water (with an average of two or three daily outings), returning to the comforts of a full-service resort hotel each night.

Itinerary Highlights g Stay on a comfortable traditional wooden liveaboard handcrafted by master carpenters using locally grown timber. g Visit a fishing village, meet the locals and observe traditional ways of life. g Spot marine species such as Napoleon wrasses, Moorish idols, mandarinfish and the Java cownose ray, among many others.

Itinerary Highlights g Swim with millions of harmless jellyfish in Jellyfish Lake—one of the most surreal snorkeling experiences in the world! g Take a dip in the waters at Giant Clam Beach, where 500-pound bivalves bathe themselves in the shallows. g Explore World War II history by visiting forgotten sites during island walks.

WWF in Raja Ampat WWF biologists are currently monitoring the health of coral reefs in and around Raja Ampat’s protected areas, specifically examining how well they are protecting the region’s biodiversity.

WWF in Palau WWF helps support local conservation efforts, such as Palau’s Micronesia Challenge, which pledges to protect 30 percent of near-shore marine and 20 percent of terrestrial resources on the islands by 2020.

Snorkeling Adventure Reason to go: Whale sharks.

Imagine: Called “butanding” in the local language of Tagalog, whale sharks can reach lengths of up to 40 feet, weigh more than 20 tons and have a lifespan of more than 100 years. In other words, when you swim with these ancient creatures in the Bay of Donsol, the “whale shark capital of the world,” you’ll be utterly fascinated. Swimming with them is a life-changing moment.

Itinerary Highlights g Observe diverse species in this marine life hotspot, including branching coral, sea turtles, giant trevally, parrot fish, bigeye scad and clown triggerfish. g Snorkel the waters at night, spot octopus, squid and other nighttime prowlers such as blunt-end sea hares.

Komodo

Snorkeling Adventure Reason to go: See Komodo dragons and manta rays, snorkel pristine waters and relax on the island of Bali.

Imagine: Named one of the top 10 snorkel spots in the world, to call the Coral Triangle spectacular is an understatement. On dry land, search out the largest lizard in the world, the Komodo dragon.

Itinerary Highlights g Relax at the beginning and end of your trip in a tropical paradise. Bali has been nicknamed the Island of Love, Island of Peace and Island of the Gods for good reason. g Explore Komodo National Park in search of Komodo dragons. There are an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 individuals left in the wild.

g Travel with an expert marine biologist guide who lives and works in the Philippines.

g Come close to the world’s largest ray—mantas—as well as “electric rays,” (whose name is an accurate description of their defense mechanisms).

WWF in the Philippines WWF has trained at least 50 locals and fisherman to guide and work with whale sharks in the Donsol area. WWF is also implementing a climate change adaptation project to better protect coastal communities and reefs from the effects of typhoons.

WWF in the Coral Triangle WWF and the Indonesian government are creating a network of marine protected areas in the Sunda Banda seascape. These waters provide important migratory routes for several species of whale and vital fish populations for local peoples.
