thorough fare, this space will need to be open, but the client has asked for the corridor within their office to be integrated to the rest of the scheme. There are memorabilia within the existing space and the client would like this displayed and integrated within the space in some way.

Within previous designs I have been involved with, the most effort has been placed into the aesthetic of the space, not the function.

Understanding of how people interact with spaces and how they can be impacted by them can help people in the long run. Humans are spending more time indoors now, so ensuring that the places they spend most of their time in isn’t detrimental to their long-term physical and mental wellbeing is key.

The project will be conceptualised in a way that will be easy for the client to understand and the process will be open for the client to make any amendments at any time. There will be renders produced, with a look at materials and textures within the space. Reflections will be periodically made throughout the process from both myself and the client to make sure that the scheme is going the way that they would like it. There will also be reflection made on my own practise and how this has impacted on my process. The documentation process will involve a working document that contains ideas and processes.

The client is open to designs that I come up with as long as the key aims are included within the scheme. The space needs to function as an office while also allowing spaces for break outs meetings or waiting areas. There also needs to be elements of privacy as the space is quite open, so a more enclosed space will allow the team a dedicated space. The client has also stressed that they do not want to fully block off the outer space, just to make the inner space more intimate. There is a need to keep the outer space large as this is used as a

have been able to work on a range of live briefs before this one, the majority of these briefs have been while I was on placement at Callerton Kitchen and Interiors, where I was a design technician. The main roles that I had at the placement was to input plans and designs from the designers, while I also corresponded with clients in the showroom, or over the phone/ email. Having this position allowed me to develop the skills that will allow me to deal with clients in the future, it has also helped me to know how I will need to work as a designer to complete tasks. This placement was for a residential kitchen setting, so this project will be different as it is for a commercial office space but the skills I have cultivated from this position are still valid and relevant for my practice. I want to leave myself open to different directions that my practice can take, as I feel that if I limit my practice, I will limit myself as a designer. This route is not something I would like to do as I feel this would stifle my creativity and any learning that I will allow myself to be open to engage in.

One live project that I have worked on before was for the renovation of the HE Hub on Campus. This project was to redesign a restaurant/study space/event space within the college. This space isn’t an office like the one that is being proposed here, but it does have separate spaces that each have different needs and uses. By being involved

in the team that designed this space was a great opportunity to grow both myself and my practice, it opened my eyes to how a corporation may react to proposals for a space within a larger building. The proposal is for one office within Durham Cricket Club, so there may be input from management into the designs, this will be alright though as I have the tools to be able to deal with any input and changes that will become necessary. While working on the HE Hub the management of the college were involved with the designs at multiple stages, this has led me to developing the knowledge into how to engage with large clients, this also helped me when speaking with clients at Callerton’s.

With starting this MA course, I have been able to have deep reflections about my practice, when I havet worked on projects in the past, I approached them in a very practice-based way to ensure that the outcome would be sufficient. Now that I have had time to reflect, I have realised that with time I have become much more practice-led, leading to deeper understanding on the topics that I am looking into and the designs I am suggesting to clients. Now that I understand the way in which my practice should work, I feel that I will be able to deliver a much better experience for any clients that choose to work with me, this will also lead to me having a deeper understanding of different topics that are involved with interior design. Now that I have realised that I am practice-led I feel that this viewpoint will allow my knowledge to expand, this can help me to look at both the theoretical aspects of a project along with the physical ideas and spaces.

Methodology

o ensure that I will be able to effectively complete this project I will need to take a step back from where I usually design, this will make sure that I am thinking of the client in everything I do. In the past I have designed with my own ideas at the front, this led to me designing a space that I would like rather than what the client needs. With this in mind I will need to choose an effective methodology to make sure the project will be completed in a timely manner and that a design will work for the client.

Knowing the other users of a space will allow any designs that I may produce to be much deeper, the office will need to be multifunctional so designing for a wide range of people will ensure that anyone that may be in the space will feel comfortable.

From the research I have already undertaken I have found the design toolkit; this is a manual that is freely available online to help designers become more human centred and help them being their journey to becoming a human centred designer. Now that I am aware of this way of working, I want to run this project in this way. I will make sure to ask a range of different questions at client meetings to gain insight into the space, this will ensure that I have the information needed to design the office to a high quality. Within this there will be research into different facets to ensure that I understand how a small change can disrupt the whole design. The way in which this project will be developed is going to be different with COVID lockdowns still present, but I won’t let this stop me from producing a design that both the client and I will be proud of.

The best methodology for this project would be to use a human-centred design approach, this is discussed in detail in empathic design section. This approach entails that a design should design a scheme/product for everyone that will make contact with the end product.

Within this thought process being open to gaining knowledge will be a key component, this will mean that a range of questions will need to be asked to determine which way the design will go (Townson, 2017). By allowing myself to be open to new knowledge I will

At the initial client meeting I was shown the office, which was to be renovated, photos are on existing space page, I was also able to speak to the client and learn what they wanted within the space. The client talked through the office and let me know how it is used and his thoughts for how the space can be utilised. I made sure to listen to the client’s needs and how the space was described so that I would be able to create a scheme that would fit the brief.

The office is broken up into four separate sections: 1) The main office space 2) The main hallway through next to the office space that everyone uses 3) The breakout are/storage area on the other side of the hallway 4) The kitchen/break area (This space will not be renovated at this time; this could be an extension later) During this meeting the client told me how the team has evolved and how he views the space. The team has expanded recently, so the client is looking for ways to combat this.

One point that he made was that a hot desking system would work for the office. Not everyone is in the office at once, some will be on the field training/teaching while others may not be in the office that day. The boss of the team would like a dedicated desk for him as he will need to be near important files, this will need to be thought about when hot desking. All of the team work on laptops, so they do not need to be tied to a single desk, they also don’t use as much paperwork most are digital forms.

The client wants a break out space that is separate from the main office that can be used to work at, as well as being used for small meetings. Another feature that the client was interested in was the inclusion of lockers in the office. These would be used individually for each person in the office, plus one for communal cricket equipment. There will need to be a locker that can be used for paperwork, but this could be a small filing cabinet like is already in the office. The boss also want’s plants included within the space, the client already has some plants in the office, but is interested in including.

There isn’t a large budget for the renovation, but I won’t let this stop me from creating something that the whole team will feel comfortable in while working. I won’t let this stop me from creating a space that is effective for the need of the team, while the space still feels like an office while having an aesthetic that works for everyone.

From discussions with the client, it is clear that there will be different topics that will need to be researched to be able to effectively complete the renovation.

The topics above will help me to effectively design and develop my practice. When looking deeply at the above topics I will make sure to consider the client at all aspects, as some of the ideas that come forward at early stages will be too complex or not right for the space, these ideas will need to be refined, but not thrown out as they could spark creativity and ideas for both myself and the client.

Biophilia is the inherent human need to be surrounded with nature, mostly plants, but it can be animals as well. This impulse has been suggested to stem from early human evolution, with homo sapiens surrounded by nature as they have evolved (Kellert, Heerwagen and Mador, 2008, p 3). There are numerous benefits to ensuring that nature is available within schemes, such as ensuring that food chains can continue or for adequate development of cognitive processes within children. For biophilic design to be effective it can be broken up into 7 sections: +Environmental features +Natural shapes and forms +Natural patterns and processes +Light and space +Place-based relationships +Evolved human-nature relationships (Kellert, Heerwagen and Mador, 2008, p. 6) These sections can then be split further into a series of sub-sections, to allow understanding and development into relevant sections of designs within biophilic design.

This allows for important attributes to be understood. There are many ways to include biophilia within schemes from placing living items within an interior, to emulating patterns within forms.

There are many different benefits to taking a biophilic design approach. These benefits can be simple, such as ensuring that food chains can sustain both human and animal life, to more complex reasons such as how cognitive development in children can be affected by insufficient exposure to nature (Kellert, Heerwagen and Mador, 2008 p.g 10).

As previously shown, there are many sections that biophilia can be broken into and these can then be sub-categorised even further.

One way to ensure that biophilia has been implemented cohesively is to seamlessly place materials into the scheme, this leads to creating an experience for inhabitants and guests (Biophilico, no date).

There are many simple ways in which biophilia can be implemented in everyday life such as utilising rooftop spaces. Within cities rooftops are spaces that are generally forgotten about, on average 15-35% of landmass is taken up by rooftops in cities. If these spaces are used effectively then the benefits can be great.

When using these spaces proper drainage, structure and waterproofing will need to be considered, when this is done correctly, more green space can be added to urban locations (Channon, 2018).

Also as shown by Channon (2018, p. 65) by adding more greenspace to cities there can be a noticeable improvement in ecology and biodiversity. When there is strong biodiversity a stronger and healthier ecosystem is found, a strong ecosystem is very important for the planet to function correctly. Other benefits of plants such as a reduction in air pollution, with an added bonus of cooling properties in hotter climates can add to the calming properties of nature.

These benefits can be taken from a highly diverse plant range which combined can create bright colourful and diverse gardens which improve moods in humans. When a diverse garden is planted a range of different wildlife can be attracted, interactions with animals have also been shown to improve moods in humans (Channon, 2018, p. 65). It has also been shown that animals that are usually found in cities are being driven out by development and growing cities, there are now products that can help to bring these species back, without compromising buildings or aesthetics. This can also lead to improved mooods as watching the progress can be beneficial to humans.

BIG, Bjarke Ingels Group, is an architecture firm that was set up in 2005 by Bjarke Ingles.

The founder has described architecture “as the art and science of making sure our cities and buildings fit with the way we want to live our lives.” (‘BIG | Bjarke Ingels Group’, no date). Ingels has stated that he believes in Information-driven design as the main driving force of his design process, meaning that the building fits the environment and the needs of the people that will interact with it. With an eye on how people will interact with buildings there is also attention on the future of cities and the multicultural exchange of ideas in the current climate. The company takes a pragmatic approach to solutions, by creating buildings that don’t stick to the “boring boxes of typical architecture” (‘BIG | Bjarke Ingels Group’, no date). One hallmark of the company is to produce buildings that overlap in their uses, melding living, working and leisure spaces with pragmatic solutions to parking and shopping (‘BIG | Bjarke Ingels Group’, no date).

Oliver Heath Design is a design studio that produces “sustainable architecture and interior design, focused on improving health and wellbeing in the built environment” (Oliver Heath, no date). The studio creates spaces that improve productivity by ensuring that the inhabitants are happy and healthy by improving the human connection to nature. Major aspects the studio focus on is to improving natural light with adequate ventilation, improving views onto nature and to incorporate natural materials, textures and patterns within their work (Oliver Heath, no date). Some of the services that they offer also lean into administration along with design. The design studio offers spatial design services along with research-based consultancy services. This service ranges from educational talks and seminars to research studies and trend forecasting. The studio also offers TV and Media communications to help spread the research that the studio produces, along with seminars on the products that the studio develops to enable a deeper understanding of biophilia (Oliver Heath, no date).

c Design Empathic design is the trend of getting close to a user in a design process. This process has mainly been used for product design in the past, but it is steadily being used more by interior designers to create inclusive spaces. This design process can have multiple names such as: Empathic design, Empathetic design, Human-centred design among others. The different names may have slight differences within their belief system, but they all hinge on the belief that designs should be centred on people and how they will interact with the spaces/objects they need by finding creative approaches to problem solving (IDEO, no date). Empathy is not always associated with the design process, even though design should be associated with the needs of the end users.

Empathy can be a crucial part of the design process, with good design being reliant on empathy (Intercontinental, 2018). Demirkan and Kocaogly (2019) have suggested that students within the design fields should experience the needs of the people they are designing for. This will ensure they gain a deeper understanding of the people that are involved within the design process.

Ilse Crawford, founding editor of British Elle Decoration, believes in a people first and empathic approach. Crawford’s studio believes in thinking of the person that may use it, no matter the size of the project, as this will keep the project grounded and focused (Demirkan and Kocaogly, no date). This approach gains an understanding into the client and a quiet understated knowledge of how people may interact and exist in the space.

Commercial spaces can have a range of different people that need to interact and mingle with each other, this could lead to developing creative solutions. The people that are in office spaces will each have their own motivations, their own work ethic and communicate differently, these will need to be accounted for to ensure that the space will work for everyone (Szenasy, 2014). An empathic design approach will find that a “once space fits all” approach doesn’t work with different factors like technology constantly changing, spaces will need to be flexible enough to change with this and the needs of the people inside.

There has also been a trend of home, work and social life blending together in recent years, so creating break out spaces and spaces at work where employees can relax and take breaks is a large component of empathic design (Szenasy, 2014).

Maggie’s Centre United Kingdom Maggie’s Centres are located all over the United Kingdom. The centre specialises in care for cancer patients, their families and friends. The buildings are designed by a range of leading architects and each have their own aesthetic, while also adhering to the charity’s principles and ideals. One of these ideals is “calm, clarity and a cup of tea”, this is reflected in the buildings they operate from (Maggie’s Centres, no date). The buildings tend to have double height ceilings as cancer patients may curl in on themselves, but people can be influenced to feel braver and un-curl to walk taller in a space with high ceilings (Intercontinental, 2018). The spaces are calming and welcoming to the guests

within them, the settees have cushions that are inviting and always plumped up, this has been done to give the illusion that guests aren’t in another person’s space or grief. The bathrooms are all soundproofed and include a chair and mirror, to allow the user to compose themselves and not have to worry about any noise making it outside (Intercontinental, 2018). The spaces have a mix of natural materials and plant life. This has been done to cultivate a space that is welcoming and has a soul, compared to regular clinical settings. The goal of these spaces is to convey hope and inspiration for the patients that need the space along with a community spirit for any that enter (Block, 2020).

Olav’s Hospital Norway

A student facility within St Olav’s Hospital, located in Trondheim, Norway, was designed with raw materials and people in mind, to help remove the institutional and clinical look of the building. The exterior of the building has a white and black glass façade, this is used for shade from the sun and as an art piece, while also helping the building with energy reduction (Hobson, 2013). With the building having a university setting materials were chosen to convey a roughness, instead of a clinical setting, within the centre are commissioned murals to give definition to the different spaces. The architect, Per Anders Borgen, stressed within his designs that the space needed to strip away the institutional feel to the centre and make the space people focused. The main ward of the hospital is centred around one nurses station, this enables the patients to have sightlines of the nurses at all times (Intercontinental, 2018). There was also consideration into wheelchair users within the building, there are no seperate doors or ramps, they are incorprated into existing doors and sets of stairs. The exterior flooring was designed with input from patients to include un-even materials and textures, to allow new wheelchair and crutch users a space to practice and learn, this option would not have been something that Borgen would have first designed without the input of the people the space was intended for (Intercontinental, 2018).

The project will need to be done on a small budget, as the office is part of a registerd charity, leading to a small expendable budget. By having a small budget I will be able to find creative solutions to what materials can be used, or re-used, within the renovation. Consideration will need to be taken into which materials can be used, as the materials will need to be functional, as well as feel like they aren’t out of place in the office. The finishes that are suggested will need to look like they can exist within the office, they also need to work well with the chosen materials. Any materials that are chosen will need to be durable as they will need to withstand not only the general uses of the office, but any other uses that people walking through may need, this also goes for the furniture as well.

Another aspect that will need consideration is how to creatively upcycle and re-use pieces that are pre-existing in the office. There was a possibility that fundraising could have been completed within this year to generate a budget, but with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic this may not be possible. This will lead to

furniture being sourced later in the year, or possibly next year, to complete the renovation. Luckily the office currently has pieces that are functional and will be able to be moved around to complete a partial renovation. When the foundation feel that fundrasing can go forward I will still be available to source any furniture or items that will be needed to complete the scheme.

As discussed the materials that are sourced must be cost effective but also durable. OSB is a good choice for this as it is durable and looks effective when in an office space, it will also match the suggested colour scheme, while also being cheap to purchase.

There are certain materials within the space that can not be changed such as the flooring the existing flooring isn’t too bad, it would be ideal to change this to a different shade of grey, currently it is a green-grey colour. The rest of the colour palette will need to be chosen to fit around this colour as it could be too expensive to replace this carpet as the existing one is a specific weave designed for high traffic areas, to reduce wear and tear and to help with stains.

One material that can be used within the office is OSB, or chipboard, will be a good material to use as it is a cheap wood, but it will look effective within the space. OSB is hard wearing and able to be used to make multiple forms, this will come in handy as there are multiple different sheet sizes available and a single sheet can be cut down to make the most of the material for the price.

With the added versatility of the OSB within the space the texture can be included within different sections of the office, such as using it as partition walls and for creating storage solutions. As already stated, the flooring will need to stay the same so there is a dark blue texture within the office already, this will work with the suggested colour schemes and the other materials that I will include. The desks that are in the space are already a light wood, this will work well for the time being as the light wood will work with the OSB in the space. The different types of wood within the space will add to the textures within the space. Theses textures can be developed with the inclusion of some metal accents into the office.

Normally I don’t think of plant life as a material, I would look at them as an accessory or as decoration, but with the client specifically requesting plants to be included within the scheme I need to think about them differently. They will need to become more of a material, but there will need to be consideration taken into which plants will be used within the space. Seeing these items in a different light will help myself and my practice to develop much more biophilic designs. Like it has already been stated there will be a small budget, so there will need to be consideration into how the existing materials can be repurposed.

The briefs that I have worked on before have all had larger budgets compared to this one. I have so far liked the challenge of developing a scheme with a small budget. This will definitely make me think about how materials can be used and which ones are appropriate.

This will also need to be applied to the materials and textures that will sourced for the other furniture that will be needed for the space.

Within the office there are health and safety issues that will need to be considered while designing. There are reports that businesses must follow can be hard to obtain if you aren’t within the business, I haven’t been able to get a hold of any of these reports so I will need to design the space with common sense in mind.

One aspect to think about is the walkways through the space. These walkways will need to be defined to ensure that there is free movement within the office and to ensure that there is enough space for chairs in the room.

From discussions with the client, I was made aware that the office is multifunctional at the moment, but the client would like it to become much more multifunctional. The long hallway that is outside of the main office is used for transportation to one side of the building to the other. With this in mind consideration needs to be placed into seeing where the main walkways of the space are and how the furniture can be moved around them.

With the client asking for a hot desking system, there will be a maximum of 12 people from the team in the office at once. There will need to be enough space between each desk to allow for seats to extend while others may be sitting at a desk behind them. There will be desks within the main section of the office, there won’t be many of these desks as not everyone will be in the office all of the time, so there is no need for 12 separate desks in the office. With this in mind the breakout area can be used for standing at to work or to sit at, so the space may need around 8 desks. To ensure that there is enough space between desks it is suggested to have between 2000mm-2400mm or 2m-2.4m (spectrum, 2015). Ensuring that this space is available between the desks and other seats or the wall will ensure that people will feel comfortable while at their desk.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted how offices are now ran, in the past working in a prescribed space has always been seen as the best way to work. Recently it has been shown that this is not true, after employees have worked from home for an extended period of time employers are finding new ways to run offices. There are many factors that go into working in an office that have been drastically 44

changed since the beginning of the pandemic, such as being able to collaborate within a team.

Videoconferencing apps have been developed for a wide audience very quickly to allow team communication and any collaboration (Boland et al., 2020). The office will need to adapt to the measures that have been put in place to protect the teams that work there, every office is different so each space will need to employ individual solutions to this pandemic.

There are some employees that are benefiting from working from home for various reasons, cutting out a lengthy commute, allowing extra time with families, some may feel more productive leading to wanting to work from home permanently. This is not that case for all workers as some feel like they do not have the equipment to work from home, or they do not have adequate time with family matters while at home. (Boland et al., 2020). Offices will need to adapt to employee thinking and business needs in the future to ensure that businesses can continue to thrive.

In the past I haven’t really designed schemes to this level of detail, I have cared more about the overall aesthetic of the space instead of how useable it is. Having the chance to work at Callerton kitchens helped me to think about the different qualities a space will have to have, it is going to have to be functional, along with being aesthetic. Within the Level 5 interior and spatial design course I completed I began to look at designs in detail, but it still wasn’t as detailed as this. I feel that this level of detail will enhance my practice as I will be able to make better decisions for the clients that will help them in the long run.

I don’t usually create these boards at as early a stage as this, but with the client expressing that they could not visualise the space or the changes that they wanted I felt that it would be beneficial for them to see what could be done with the suggested materials and how others have used them. I have found creating these boards to be beneficial as it has helped me to finalise some of my ideas and narrow them down, I knew some of the very initial images would not work for the space, but by exploring the different examples of how others have utilised them has helped me to pin point what can be done within the space.

From the research that has been undertaken and the preliminary chats with the client I was able to create preliminary mood boards from the ideas that had been suggested.

These boards were created for the client to get an idea of what materials and ideas could be within the space as it was expressed that the client would not be able to visualise the ideas that he was suggesting. The idea behind these boards is to show him how the space could look, as some of the images on the boards would not be relevant to the space but are there to show how the suggested materials can be utilised or applied in creative ways for the space. With this boards being preliminary ideas, there will be different boards created at the end with the ideas that the client identifies with more. There will be a material board created (next page) to show the materials that are predominantly within these initial boards and ideas, again there will be a final board created that will show the materials that will be included within the space.

From this point discussions will take place with the client to move forward and finalise floor plans and aesthetic. With these discussions I expect the moodboards will need to shift with the design, to become product boards instead of a general idea/moodboard.

This will be no problem as these new boards will help the client to understand the scheme better.

Luckily, I was able to make a site visit to take measurements and to get a feel for the space before a lockdown. While there I kept in mind what the client would want for the space and the practical applications of the additions that the client would want. I also made sure to keep social distancing in mind, as we don’t know how long this pandemic will last for, or how long any safety measures will be in place for. Understanding how the office will need to adapt in the future will be key to creating a design that works for the team. When looking at the space it is visually very large, but when I measured the space it showed just how large the office actually is. With knowing how large the space is I have a better feeling for how the items within the office may sit together. The next step in the design process will be to place the rough drawing into SketchUp to create a shell of the office, this will allow me to begin to draw some rough initial floor plans. After that there will be a final floor plan created, this will allow me to look at how the room will function, it will also allow for development and refinement of the initial sketches.

The pandemic has not impacted how I am bale to design, but it has impacted how I was able to measure the space as the client had offered me the chance to go back into the space so that I could talk through designs with them, but since the UK has gone back into lockdown that is not possible. It is also hard to get in touch with the client, as when I am sending designs for them to look at, it is over email instead of in person, this can stifle both me and the client as if the discussion was in person there could be an organic discussion into the ideas that I have had and any adjustments or other needs can be brought up on the spot.

With money being tight at this point of the project, existing desks may have to be used for the time being. The desks are a light wood luckily, they will fit into the suggested scheme. They are quite large in size as they are set up for office use, they also have dividers between every desk on all sides to allow for information to be stored for ease.

This system will need to be implemented in some way as the client has said that they are mostly digital, but they still rely on some forms of paper. There could be an option of having notice boards along a wall for this, as all confidential information is stored in a locked cupboard, so there is no risk to store paperwork in the open. This could also create communal spaces within the office for the team to reflect at and to create a sense of community.

For a first round of floor plans I took the basic ideas of what the client wanted and tried to find ways to incorporate preliminary ideas into the space. The first couple of designs were made to figure out how pieces could fit into the space, but these designs looked to be quite sterile and not much had changed within the space. From this point I decided to try a more creative approach, this would enable a bit more thought to fit with the clients specific needs. From the research I have already undertaken I have begun to design in a more holistic and empathic process, compared to designs in the past. I feel that this process has enabled me to get deeper to the project and closer to the design, as in the past I have designed mainly for the aesthetics, this time I won’t be able to do this. The space has multiple uses and will host multiple people, so ensuring that anyone that steps into the office will feel welcomed.

Breakout S

Space The client has expressed interest in a breakout area within the office. There could a couple of different options for where this can be placed within the office, such as near the windows (if there is enough room) or the space next to the server room. The server room will need access but if the table, or tables, are positioned correctly then there will be no issues with access. There are multiple uses that breakout areas such as separate space for meetings to be held in the area or it can be used for different sections of the team to get together. The space could also be used as space for meals or for some of the team to work on if they wish.

There are numerous different tables that can be chosen for a breakout space, but a long table may be a good option, as there would be enough space for a large number of people to surround it. A high table can also be a benefit as there is an option for someone to work standing up or sat on a stool, that way there is difference within the office. There could be two different tables that can be pushed together within the space such as two round tables, but this option may work within the space. There needs to be access into the server room, there may also not be enough space for a large number of the team to get around the table, as there may be not enough surface area to have them all there at once, whereas a long bench style table will have a big surface area which will allow people to surround the table on all sides, instead of just on certain areas. This space can be easily adapted for different functions/team needs.

From the previous designs, I could tell that there was a theme coming through. The breakout space works best outside of the main office as this splits the office into distinct spaces. Having this space separate allows for more room for desks in the main office space. As it has been previously discussed COVID has changed how offices are being used and seen, so creating a space that will work with these changes and can be adapted will be key. In this final design I have suggested for a small comfy seating area at one side of the office, next to two bays of windows, this will allow natural light next to the seating area and allow the occupants a view of the cricket pitch. This will be a nice addition to the space as they already have a break area to eat at, but this are can be used for a quick relax or if they are changing shoes, they can use this space and not disturb the working area.

these lockers are designed in white, as the client has not made it clear which colour they would like. This also leaves the colour neutral to go with the rest of the textures in the space. One of these lockers will be used to store cricket equipment, so the team will need to decide which one of the lockers is this one. The lockers are not full ceiling height, so there is an option for above locker storage made from MDF. I have also added a couple of storage cubes against the wall, this can be used for files, photos, small plans or nick knacks that the office accumulates.

This can help the team to bond over what is stored. I have also suggested two small height filling cabinets to go along with the lockers, as this will make a clear definition between confidential paperwork and items that can be moved around the lockers.

I have placed different pla nt around the space to add biophilia into the scheme. I have tried to make sure that they are placed in eyesight wherever anyone is within the space, so they get most of the benefits of plants.

The client has requested that lockers should be incorporated into the space somewhere.

The client has not defined what size they would need/want within the space, except to say that the lockers will need to hold the teams cricket kits, personal items and any papers that they want to keep for themselves.

The client also wanted one locker that would be used by the whole team for equipment.

This locker would be used to hold cricket balls and possibly bats, along with other pieces of communal equipment. This locker is needed as the client spoke about equipment going missing or not being returned when borrowed.

The client also said that they would personally need a locker/locked space to keep their files in as this would follow data protection. This locked space could be one of the full-size lockers, or it could be smaller filling cabinets, the filing cabinets could be placed anywhere within the space as if a small size (i.e., 2 drawer height) is chosen then these can be placed in a corner or placed up against a back wall.

When looking at the sizes of lockers, they can come in multiple sizes. The standard size for a locker is 1800x300x300mm (Doe, 2018), this may not be the right size for the team, as they will need to use the lockers for a few different items at a time. There are different sizes available, from small cube lockers all the way to sports lockers. A sport locker would more than likely be ideal for the office.

This locker is deeper than a standard locker, but it is shorter than a standard locker at 1510x485x490mm (Doe, 2018). Personally I feel that this size would work best for the clients needs, as the team will need to store personal items (clothing, shoes, any valuable items) along with sports kit and personal equipment.

The larger size will allow for easier storage of items, plus the larger size will allow more storage within the communal locker. This size will be suggested to the client, but I am fully aware that it is the client’s decision to which size is chosen. I can only suggest what would work for the space, while being aware that I won’t be inhabiting the space.

Cactus: + Cacti need to be watered sparingly, once a week in spring and summer, then once every three weeks in winter. + Great plants for beginners or those that can’t look after plants.

Red Anglaonema + A very colourful plant, which will add depth to a scheme. + The plant is more colourful in bright light but can survive in low light, it is just a bit more dull.

Snake Plant + A veritcal plant that can survive in low light and droughts. + Great for people that forget to water plants or to be in a space that may not have people in every day.

English Ivy + The plant needs lots of water at first, but once it is grown it can be watered sparingly. + The plant does great in cool temperatures, perfect for chilly offices.

Spider Plant + These ptlants dry out between watering, so can go up to a week without watering. + They thrive with indirect light, so work great in dark corners of the office.

Jade Plant + This plant needs medium light for a few hours per day meaning it coudl sit anywhere in an office. + The soil in the pot needs to be dry before it is watered again.

As previously discussed within the biophilia section it is beneficial for human health to include plants within a space. Offices can be seen as a place that needs to be bare and can’t have any life within them, but this isn’t the case, there have been numerous studies completed on the benefit of plants in an office space showing that nature can be beneficial in all settings. As discussed by Kubota et al (2017) physical fatigue can come from sitting in the same position for an extended period of time, while workers could also experience visual fatigue from desk work. Within the study it was suggested that simply looking at plants can reduce visual fatigue and lower stress that the workers were feeling. Within another study completed by Exeter University it is recommended that offices that are psychologically engaging are better for the workers. This can easily be achieved by adding plants into the office at one plant per square metre. Having this level of plants in the office can see an increase in workers memory retention, with a 15% increase in productivity (Knight quoted by Chignell, 2018).

There are many different plants that can be used within an interior, there may not be people in an office for days at a time, so consideration will need to be taken into which plants will be selected for the office. There is an argument for using plastic plants instead of real ones as the previously mentioned studies suggest that sight of plants alone can help alleviate fatigue and stress, this could help people that can’t look after plants but there are numerous benefits of using real plants instead. One main positive for including real plants within a space is not only the pleasant smell but also the ability to filter the air of a space. Plants are able to turn carbon dioxide into oxygen, while filtering toxic particles that are in the air of the interior. This will not fix major problems with the air of a space, but it will help to fix small problems that can crop up (Divani, 2019). Some fake plants in a scheme are acceptable as some places may not have a good light level and plants do need light to photosynthesise, but fake plants should be used sparingly as fake plants do not give the benefits of real plants.

Plants for the Office 61

Kallax units from Ikea can be used within the office as open storage options. They will need to be bolted to the wall, but this will not be a problem. There are a few different sizes to choose from, but this size is not too large and won’t overwhelm the wall. Plus more than one size could be used together to make a custom unit.

One aspect of the design that will need to be considered is the furniture within the office. The office already has pieces within it that will be suitable within the new design that I will suggest.

These existing pieces are high quality office furniture that will definitely work within the new scheme. With the project not having a large budget I will need to figure out how to make the space look brand new while using some existing features. This can be done easily as the existing desks will not be the focal point within the space, the lockers or the breakout area will be. The client has requested lockers to be placed within the scheme, these can be bought online second hand, but they are pricey so a section of the budget will need to be spent on this. Sometimes lockers can appear on sites like Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree that are not too expensive, but they may not be the correct size for the office, this does not mean that this option should be completely disregarded as the ideal lockers may appear.

A table will be needed for the breakout area as high stools have already been bought to fit into the space. These stools are light wood with white legs, this will fit into the scheme that has been chosen for the office, a light wood table would work for this area, or possibly a black table to differentiate between the clean light office and the breakout space. This would help the light stools to stand out. There will be a need for storage within the space, so I have chosen an open cube storage system that will allow for files and paperwork to be stored there, plus the cubes will allow for other items to be stored in it. This storage system has been chosen to be in a light wood colour, this will match the desks the stools that ae in the space. Working with a small budget is something that I like to do as it makes me think of creative solutions to complete the brief. By working in this small space, I am able to creatively think about how the office will need to run and how I am able to empathically design for the space. As I have previously discussed I have had the chance to design like this for the HE Hub, but at that point in my design career I wasn’t as in touch with human centred design, so I didn’t use that chance to design for other people, I designed a place that I would want to be in.

As it stands there is not much known about the budget, with the office being part of a charity there would be fundraising to gain the budget but with COVID this hasn’t been able to go ahead.

So at the moment sourcing furniture will be a part of the future of this project. I will let the clients know about my thoughtd of where the furniture should come from, this will allow them to decide if this furniture is correct for them.

Boards From the different chats with the client and the development that has been completed I have been able to produce a material board to show to the client. This board includes the colours, textures and materials that I will be suggest being included. I have made sure to place the items in separate places so that the client can see the materials on their own.

While at the same time I have made sure to overlap the materials a little, as they will all be in the scheme together, so they need to work well together. I usually don’t place blocks of colour onto these material boards, as it is more to do with the physical materials than colours, but I felt that this board needed this. This board deals with the main materials within the space, the furniture and their materials will come later. The colours within the space add to the textures and the look of the space, so they need to be on this board. I used to develop these boards from conception to final in a physical form, but I gave recently created the experimental boards in a digital form. This board would be only for me to see

as it doesn’t have the material on it, the real board would have different material samples on the board for the client to interact with.

I have also created a product board for the clients to see which products will be in the space, as not all of the models in SketchUp will be exactly the same and I am not skilled enough to create intricate models of furniture that look correct.

With the COVID pandemic still ongoing this board will stay digital. It is a shame as a physical board would allow the clients to interact with the actual materials that would be in the space. The client may not feel comfortable with handling a board from someone that isn’t in their bubble. One positive of this board is that it can be sent very easily to the whole team, or any of the management that may want to have a look at the materials that will be in the space, a physical board would make this very hard to do.

Renders

To produce the renders for this project I created a SketchUp model of the final design, instead of just producing a quick sketch. This model will come in handy to both show the client from my iPad (if COVID precautions allow for a face-to-face meeting), and I am able to produce a range of different renders to send to the client. With this model I amble to produce renders of whole scenes, shown here, or more in-depth floor plans and technical models, shown on the next page. I made sure to capture the office in a range of different angles to show off the different aspects within the space, by doing this the client will have an idea of how the space will look in the future.

I like how these renders have turned out as they give a clear insight into how the office will look. I made sure to get multiple angles of the office so that the client can get a feeling of how all of the different angles and corners of the office. The corridor looks much better now that there is decoration on it, compared to how it looks now bare and cold. These renders also show off the different materials that are used within the office and how they will all sit together.

All of the renders that are produced are from SketchUp, with no postproduction done to them. I prefer this to photorealistic renders, as I feel that clients can become hung up on the details of a render and if the finished project is not exactly the same as the render then clients can become upset. With SketchUp there is a cartoon element to the renders so this pulls them away from reality while still being impressive for clients to see. I will make the client aware of the fact that the furniture seen within the model is a represenation of the finished wihtin the finished space, as with SketchUp sometimes the furniture is not exactly what will be in the finished space. This will not be a problem as I will have showed the client the furniture board so they know exactly what is going into the space.

So that the client is able to see the final renders I have created a series of render boards. These will allow the client to see the office from different angles and to look at the different qualities of the renovation. The top board shows the main office from different angles, I have done this to allow the client to understand how the office will run and to get a feel for the whole space. I like how this board has turned out as the angle the room is shown at really allow for a good look at the space, plus a client that hasn’t seen a render series like this before will really like how it looks.

The technical board (shown in the middle) will help the client to understand where different items in the space are situated. These renders are presented with parallel projection instead of perspective, as it allows a flat look at the office. This helps the client to look at the gaps between the items within the scheme. This technical board also allows the client to get a better understanding of the corridor, as this isn’t shown in the other renders. This section was not a main priority, but it helps to tie the space together, plus it helps to show the client that the different spaces can flow together. I feel that these boards are effective as they allow a look into the space that the other renders aren’t able to give.

The last render board is made up of renders from the page before. These have been set out so that the client is able to see into the office from different angles, this will allow the client to see the furniture and layout as if they are stood in the office. I like how these renders turn out as some clients are not able to visualise how the office will look from the other two boards alone, these renders help the client to visualise it. These boards/ design have had positive feedback from the client so far, but I will know if the design has the go ahead after the client has shown them to the rest of the team.

I have enjoyed working on this project. I always enjoy getting involved in the creative aspects of a project and getting deep into the different facets of what the project needs.

I have found this project has been a good chance for me to get in-depth into a project by researching different topics that has allowed both my knowledge and my practice grow.

Within the context of this project, I have been able to figure out that I am a practiceled designer. This revelation has helped me to figure out that I have been a practice-led designer for the entirety of my academic career, but I wasn’t aware of this at the time.

Now this I am aware of this I will be able to continue in the fashion and know to trust my gut, in the past I have second guessed myself into not going as deep in a project as I felt was needed. This project has also made me realise that I want to design spaces for everyone not just for one person or even for me, spaces will be inhabited by more than person so they should be designed like this.

While researching this project I found the design tool kit and learnt more about human centred, or empathic design, I think that this will really help my practice in the long run as I do believe in the ethics of the kit and movement.

Working on this project has been a challenge while in a national lockdown. I would usually work on projects in coffee shops or visit different locations to get inspiration from the world around me, but with the lockdown I have not been able to find this inspiration.

I can find inspiration from the smallest of things, so I do feel like I was stifled somewhat because of this, but I have been able to overcome this and find the inspiration needed to complete the project. It has also been hard to get in contact with the client to gain any feedback with the lockdown as they have not been in the office. I have gained enough to keep the project running but as of right now there is not a finalised answer as to how the office is going to proceed. There was a need for the client to clear designs with upper management, so this could explain the delay in contact.

I think that the redesign of this office has been effective, as it has met all of the needs of the client. I did enjoy creating solutions within a small budget, as this opportunity will allow me to create schemes in the future that may have a small budget while still ensuring they look amazing for the occupants. One part that I did find to be quite challenging was the hot desking system, as the office would need less seats and I didn’t want the space to feel like it wasn’t inclusive of everyone, I think the inclusion of a small comfy area in the office will allow for a team building area. I also think that all of the textures have worked within the space as the inclusion of the rough wood and nature has really helped to brighten the space, as the way the office is now it looks very small, cold and dark. The inclusion of these textures will really help to make the space feel more liveable.
