Transformingboys into men of character in the modern world is not as easy as one might think. Sometimes it helps when we have more than four years to help make that happen. This is where the Saint Thomas Academy Middle School plays a pivotal role. Since 1971, the Middle School has provided a unique opportunity for boys to get a head start on their journey to become men of character. By allowing the boys an advanced look at what it means to be a cadet, middle schoolers are well positioned for success by the time they enter our Upper School ranks. It has allowed them to experience the academic rigor and leadership opportunities at an early age that is unique to the cadet experience.
The students who have attended and are now attending the Middle School have had a profound impact on Saint Thomas Academy and our mission. In fact, most of the Cadet Colonels over the last fifty years have attended the Saint Thomas Middle School. They also infuse the campus with a vitality that serves as an inspiration to us all. Last year, I spent my lunch time with all the seniors and with all the sixth graders in small groups. In hanging out with these two groups it is clear that they share a common love of this place. It is also clear that the sixth graders look at the seniors with a palpable sense of awe and wonder. But the seniors have nothing on the sixth graders when it comes to their boundless energy and their willingness to share exactly what is on their mind at any moment. I cannot imagine this campus without the spirit that our middle schoolers bring with them every day.
MISSION
Our mission — to develop boys into men of character — is our promise to our students, our families, our community and the world.
We accomplish this through the transformative power of an educational and life experience deeply rooted in Catholic faith and traditions, academic excellence, military leadership, and an all-male environment.
The Middle School has also contributed significantly to our recent growth. Today we have close to 150 boys in the middle school and if history is a guide, one of them may very well be a future Cadet Colonel. More importantly, they will one day join the ranks of some of our most notable alumni. It has indeed been a remarkable fifty years for Saint Thomas Academy and for our Middle School. You know this is a special place when fine men and long-time faculty members like Joe Seidel and Pat Callahan are still sharing their wisdom with the boys. Stay tuned, the next fifty years are poised to be filled with even more boys with great promise that will emerge from Saint Thomas Academy as men of character.
God Bless and Go Cadets!

Celebrating a Golden Anniversary of the Saint Thomas Academy Middle School
BY DAVID JACOBSON
For teachers and students alike, middle school can seem to last 50 years. At Saint Thomas Academy, the middle school itself has lasted 50 years. Founded in 1971, the middle school has welcomed thousands of Cadets to its hallowed halls.
Here, we celebrate and trace the middle school’s historical arc through the recollections of those who shaped the middle school students’ experience. The school’s story sings of consistency stemming from longevity of leadership.
Just as the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers have excelled under only three head coaches since 1971, the middle school boasts just four directors in its 50 years: Father Gordon Doffing, Mike Byrne, Mike Fleischhacker, and Jamie Jurkovich. All four have led creation and maintenance of the middle school’s consistent culture, deepening the roots of institutional excellence in the Academy as a whole.
FATHER GORDON DOFFING
joined the Academy as a high school teacher in 1966, became the first middle school director, and served on campus until his 1986 retirement. He credits Archbishop John Roach for the beginnings of the middle school’s success.
He “had the knowledge and foresight” to understand how construction of highways 35 and 494 in the early 1960s would create a growth opportunity for the Academy in Mendota Heights as more families with sons younger than high school age could take advantage of convenient drives to campus, Doffing said. “He saw this coming.”
However, the Archbishop’s visionary decision was not immediately matched by the fledgling middle school’s environs and atmosphere. “We didn’t have the best space when the middle school opened,” Doffing recalled. “We were in a lower corridor between the rifle range and the boiler room — a noisy, dusty space.”
As the Academy phased out its boarding program, the middle school moved into two buildings at Rogers Lake. There, Doffing said, the school shared space with the Marriage Encounter organization, so teachers had to remove wall hangings to accommodate those of Marriage Encounter before each weekend, and then re-hang items for the school week.

“That went on for one or two years,” Doffing said. “Plus, when the bell rang at noon for lunch, the boys scampered up the hill even in the snow, and by the time we old teachers got up there, the boys would be done eating and starting to raise hell.”
The middle school’s opening entailed other adjustments, Doffing explained. “I was used to 9th-to12th-graders, so that was a change. The first middle school teachers were plucked from the high school, and some did not have experience with middle school students.
“It was necessary to have separation between middle school and high school, but we still wanted to introduce the middle school boys to high school life, so they would go to formation and use the same gym for PE. The high school boys had to get used to having the middle school students around, and the middle school kids looked up to the older ones and aspired to attend the high school as they had a chance to witness it. They could start thinking beyond their own classroom, and with the example of the high school kids they could get into service a little earlier.”

MIKE BYRNE ’63 served Saint Thomas Academy for 37 years, including 17 years as middle school director. He also coached soccer, hockey, baseball, and golf, the sport he still coaches at the Academy even after retirement from the faculty.
Arriving on campus as a teacher in 1974, Byrne already had six years of experience teaching in a Catholic grade school and said he enjoyed working with middle school students. As one of the earliest Academy teachers to specialize in that age group, he thought it was “great preparation for those young lads to then go into the Saint Thomas Academy high school. We knew the high school teachers, so we knew how to prepare the middle school students. Kids who came in in 9th grade had a tougher academic adjustment.”
Byrne noted the opportunity to culturally meld the two age groups. “Within the school walls, the high school teachers could see what level our kids were at.

The school-within-a-school gave kids an opportunity to see what’s done at formation and in classes, so that helped the young lads who were moving up. Seeing formation every day, the prayer, the pledge, and the senior speeches had a tremendously positive influence on them.”
The only downside, Byrne joked, was needing to make sure the middle school students “stepped aside whenever those older guys came barreling through, but the young lads looked up to the older kids, and the older kids got a kick out of it.”
Early in Byrne’s tenure, he said, the number of middle school students rose quickly from two sections to five. “We had three rooms down in the military section, and it was way too crowded. They moved us into the dorm buildings, which were not the best classrooms, but at least we could easily take the boys outside to let some energy out.”

TOM WEBER joined the faculty in 1979 to teach middle school and high school English, while also coaching and moderating several activities until his retirement in 2016. “It was a great and wonderful place for me,” he said. “We were down in a building with windows facing Rogers Lake, attractive classrooms, except when the wind came blowing across the water.
“Later, we were provided more space, which was a real godsend, and we had classrooms around what they called the pit, a lower-level sunken area, which is now the media center, and created a mini amphitheater. It was very well thought out. We were separated from the high school by a corridor and the lunchroom, so our space was an identity unto itself.”
Interactions between middle school and high school students were infrequent, but the Academy’s leadership created and capitalized on certain opportunities, Weber said. “At formation, middle school students were always up at the railing looking down. We often brought in high school students to talk to the middle school students, and then everybody went their separate ways and got along well. Learning this culture gave the middle school students a step up on incoming freshmen.
1976-1977 MS Science Class, taught by Dave Bassett ’62.
The middle school was a prep school for a college prep school.”
Weber recalled with some laughter, the differences between high school and middle school teachers. “I liked teaching younger people, because after about 10th grade, kids think they know everything. The high school teachers said they didn’t know how middle school teachers could do their jobs, and the middle school teachers said the opposite about the high school teachers.”
A key to the middle school’s success during his tenure, Weber said, was the continuity among the faculty. “We were in it for the long term. This was not a stepping-stone. People stayed around for the bonds they created. I stuck around long enough to teach sons of former students.”
Among the bonding experiences were week-long camping trips for students with Garry Loufek, an Academy science teacher, at Camp Wigi-Wagen, near Ely, and the Audubon Center of the North Woods in Sandstone. “We’d go ice fishing,” Weber said, “and later we’d build a campfire in the snow and read Call of the Wild with the boys.”
Weber also recalled several women as the proverbial iron-fist-in-a-velvet-glove leaders of the middle school. “Some of the middle school mothers were the secretaries or administrative assistants: Bonnie Klun, Mary Hover, and Anne McQuillan. It took a very special person to take

care of the kids. They’d see students removed from class for whatever reason and say things like ‘So, what are you in for?’ to stop the tears and offer the Kleenex and say, ‘You just made a mistake, so go apologize.’ They would help them through some tough moments.”
ANNE M cQUILLAN joined the Academy in 2008 as an assistant to Middle School Director Mike Fleischhacker and remained in a similar role with Jamie Jurkovich until becoming facilities manager in 2020. She also coaches Nordic skiing and cross country and helped her sons Tommy ’11 and Sean ’18 through the Academy.
“I’ve just loved the families and kids,” she said. “Any time kids or parents needed help, I enjoyed helping them.
Students and chaperones take part in table tennis during a stay at the Audubon Center.
Entering Saint Thomas is a big change for students and parents. They need to know everything from what kind of binders to get to how much space parents should give their kids to how to get their boys involved in extracurriculars. They used to call me the mom of the middle school.”
“The middle school is such a great place for kids to adjust to the rigor of Saint Thomas Academy and to make friends before they get into high school. A lot of people know Saint Thomas for the high school, but the middle school is such a special, special place.”
McQuillan praised both the directors she served, again pointing to ease of transition and consistency throughout the middle school’s more recent years. “Mike Fleischhacker was so good with kids. Nothing ruffled his feathers. Middle school kids do stuff, where you’re just…‘What were you thinking?’ But he knew how to handle parents and kids. He was very patient, very kind with students, and worked well with teachers, letting them be individuals in the classroom and still keeping them working together. Jamie’s that way, too. Jamie worked for Mike, so it was an easy transition.”

MIKE FLEISCHHACKER
joined the Academy in 1991 as a high school and middle school math teacher and retired in 2011, serving his last eight years as middle school director, while continuing to teach. He also coached baseball and football.
“It was a great experience,” Fleischhacker said, “a blessing to be able to work there that long. It couldn’t have been better. Mike Byrne, my predecessor was a fabulous person. He would do anything for this school.
“Bonnie, Mary, and Anne kept me out of trouble for the most part. They were the glue that held the place together and addressed any student problems and any parent concerns. Anne was special. When I’d arrive in the morning, I’d say to her, ‘Good morning, boss.’ There were a lot of good things going on when I came in, and I just wanted to keep the ship going. It was not my spot to change a lot.”
Fleischhacker enjoyed smooth sailing with the students, with rare exceptions, he said. “We had surprisingly few traumas with the middle school kids. They were just a bunch of boys who liked to have fun and eat. They were

enthusiastic and not cynical the way high school boys can be. They had great attitudes. I got along with them, treated them fairly, corrected them when necessary, and praised them when they earned it.
“However, one day in 2008 or maybe 2009, the boys discovered the use of moveable carpet tiles to design certain less-than-appropriate images. We used that as an opportunity to teach lessons about sexual harassment. The boys were encouraged to rearrange the tiles if they wanted lunch, and it took them about three minutes.”
GARRY LOUFEK taught middle school science from 1996 until his retirement in 2017, also coaching Nordic skiing, soccer, and cross country, and bringing his son, Spencer ’11, through the Academy. He credited the cohesiveness of the middle school faculty for the quality experience they gave the students.
“We always communicated well, so no kids slipped through cracks. We had tremendous camaraderie, including the camping trips with Tom Weber, playing pranks on each other. Throughout the middle school, there was no gigantic stress. If anything started to bubble up, we just cut the head off the monster.”
Along the way, the middle school teachers and directors discovered best practices to help families get the most from the Academy, Loufek said. “Parents knew that if kids entered Saint Thomas in middle school, their freshman year would be a breeze. They’d have a friend group, because we worked very hard to get every kid involved.
“We told parents to listen to their kids at dinner, and whichever classmate’s name their son mentions, work to create a connection with him and his family. Students moving up from middle school to high school were foundationally well prepared. We’d hear that from the high school teachers, and we saw it in the entrance exam scores.”

PATTY SPAHN taught math from 1988 until her 2016 retirement. “It was a great experience,” she said. “I love working with boys that age. My colleagues were great people to work with, a closeknit group. We did a lot of activities together. There were six or seven of us in the old middle school pit area, so we were together all the time and enjoyed each other’s company. Now we have a group of retired teachers who try to get together twice a year at the school to reminisce. It was a great time in my life. I miss it.”
Pictured are Middle School students taking part in their own Formation in the Rongitsch Commons, located in the Middle School.
Such sentiment and nostalgia are natural, especially among faculty who served so well and so long with each other. But the middle school remains a vibrant, growing institution.
For example, McQuillan hailed Jurkovich’s implementation of the house program in his first year as director. Students are assigned to one of six houses, a la Harry Potter, and they compete in such events as necktie tying, fight song singing, and dodgeball.
“That incorporates independence and kids learning to take responsibility for their uniforms, books, and homework,” McQuillan said. “They work together to learn the fight song, building that brotherhood. These young kids have a lot of questions, and they go from afraid to confident academically and in terms of social skills.”
Under Jurkovich’s leadership the Academy expanded to include sixth-graders in 2017, capitalizing on the trend toward three-year middle schools and easing transition for fifth-graders exiting Visitation. Adding sixth grade also introduced a new level of tenderness to the middle school, as McQuillan experienced. “I once had a sixthgrader come to me about his locker being stuck,” she recalled. “I helped him open it, and all of his Beanie Babies came spilling out.”
Leave it to the English teacher, Tom Weber, to eloquently expand on the meaning of such experiences to students and faculty alike: “We realized the magnitude and importance of our job. Some of the students were boys trapped in a man’s body, and the opposite was also true. Sometimes a little kid, four feet tall, was as mature as I am.
“Wordsworth, in his poem My Heart Leaps Up, wrote, ‘The child is father of the man.’ Those tie-tying clinics and the high school students coming down to help out the middle school students teach culture and build muscle memory. Habits develop that they take with them for life. Like the sign on my door said, ‘Enter as boys, leave as men.’ In fifty years, we’ve gone from blackboards to whiteboards to smartboards, but I still see consistency. That’s a tribute to Jamie. I can walk in and know it’s the same place.”
Memories of an Early Middle School Student
DAN HICKEY ’76 entered the middle school in its first year as an 8th grader, following in the footsteps of his brothers who attended the high school, Bill ’74, John ’72, and Jim ’71. The family had just moved from St. Paul to Inver Grove Heights.
Hickey recalled such details as $1,500 tuition, the “high school students treating us like little brothers,” a lone Benedictine nun (“a classic disciplinary nun”), and “kids playing a lot of pranks. The big feeling I left there with was that I got the best, a very good education.”
At the Academy, Hickey said, “I met a lot of good people I’m friends with to this day. That first year, they put us down in a military basement area. They must’ve pulled it together last minute and pulled some teachers from the high school. I would call it ragtag, but I enjoyed the challenge, the firm discipline, and the rigor. Since then, they built a new wing, and now the middle school is first-class.”
The proof is in the pudding. All three of Hickey’s sons entered the Academy as 7th graders: Patrick ’02, Thomas ’06, and Kevin ’07.

Different Kind of Homecoming for Father Mark Pavlak
BY DAVID JACOBSON
When Father Mark Pavlak joined Saint Thomas Academy three-plus years ago, he hoped to establish a “ministry of presence” (Saber, Summer, 2018 ). He meant to meet Cadets where they were, not just metaphorically on their various paths through life, but physically at sports contests, theatrical productions, concerts, and other activities.
Now, Father Pavlak’s vision is more achievable, thanks to this past summer’s renovation of the priest’s residence on campus. “I’ve wanted to be more available,” said Pavlak, who previously resided at the Cathedral of St. Paul. Now living on campus, he said, “I can go to more events. One of the ways I want to interact with the boys is through games, plays, et cetera. This allows me to be more present for the boys, which is also what their parents want. Parents love the fact that the priest is on campus.”
Headmaster Kelby Woodard floated the idea of renovating the residence, then in use as storage for materials for gala events, Pavlak said. “I can’t say enough for what Kari Mawn did — cleaning and organizing. She created an Amazon wish list of things I could use, and people answered overwhelmingly well. I’ve never felt so wanted and humbled that the families want me on campus. Plus, the view from the windows is priceless. As I walk in and see the huge view of Rogers Lake, I am thankful.”
Woodard tapped Mawn, mother of Hunter Mawn ’23, based on her past success in decorating on campus for holidays and events. “I just organized things,” she said. “Once that Amazon wish list was posted, the community stepped up and contributed its time and talent. Some people donated and others came and painted.”
The process took about three weeks, Mawn said, with more than 50 people responding to a SignUpGenius form seeking hands on deck. “They cleaned and painted and built furniture and scrubbed baseboards and changed lightbulbs. One dad and his son power washed the whole outside. The Woodards handled the whole front of the residence. It was not glamorous work, but people did it.”
Among the highs Mawn cited: “Sending the first email to ask for help, wondering if people would show up, and then being overwhelmed with the community’s response. Also, the last few days, when we could see the residence with all its furniture in place.”
The project embodied the community that her family chose to join when they moved from Texas, Mawn said. “It was an easy community to join and a great place to be, and I’m proud to be part of this community. Father Pavlak was so thankful and humble when we finished, and we all just wanted him to have a nice place to rest at the end of every day with all those boys!”
Father Pavlak Receives Not Just a Home, But also a Hearth
BY DAVID JACOBSON
A unique feature of Father Pavlak’s new residence is a fire pit and surrounding patio surface that doubled as the Eagle Scout project of Charlie Treacy ’22. As he considered the project necessary to attain the rank of Eagle, Treacy decided that he “wanted to do something for the school,” he said, “and that led to work on the renovations of the priest’s residence.”
About two months and 150 person-hours later, Treacy finished the work. Of course, a few obstacles presented themselves along the way. “It’s great to see Charlie adulting,” said his father, Pete Treacy. “He dealt with supply chain issues and the wrong bricks being delivered, learning fire code that made him move the project from where he’d originally planned, and sketching the project brick-by-brick. Saint Thomas Academy fostered this discipline, and Father Pavlak’s personal spiritual guidance has benefited Charlie.”
Among the challenges Charlie Treacy faced: “Once we broke ground, it was two weeks of working three or four hours every day, digging, paving, and finishing. It was a total team effort from the boys who volunteered from my Scout troop, people who joined us through SignUpGenius and social media, and my little brother (Benedict ’25), who also got his friends to help. I thank my dad, who made sure I stayed on task and pushed me across the finish line. I could not have done this alone.”
He even added a flourish: a Celtic cross formed visually by the contrast of Minnesota River Rock against Sterling Gray bricks. Such quality stemmed from two other key contributors: Scouting leader Padraic McGuire of Nativity of Our Lord Catholic School’s Troop 67, who introduced Treacy to a stonemasonry mentor, Ian McKiel of McKiel Stoneworks.
With the project complete, Treacy said, “My initial feeling was relief. Also, constructing something with my own two hands that I know is going to last — that’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever felt.”
Underlying the entire effort was Treacy’s education at the Academy. “The school’s military leadership department focuses on leadership — go figure! — through tons of stuff they’ve taught us about what makes a great leader. You have to know your people, value them, and use their talent accordingly. STA teaches you to advocate for yourself, to go seek help when you need it. The high-achieving environment at STA encouraged me to try this harder project and motivated me to push hard.”
Count Father Pavlak himself as another beneficiary of what the Academy built into Treacy. “It turned out really well,” Pavlak said. “People comment on how awesome it looks. It’s such a nice touch, and it’s humbling that they gave that to me.”

With their first season back from COVID-19 restrictions, the team had hopes of successfully winning the Metro East Conference meet for the fifth consecutive year. The team returned two of the seven varsity runners from the 2020 roster. Ben McKinley ’23 also returned to the varsity team, but he was injured mid-season. The roster included: Emmett Wolff ’23, Phili Solomon ’24, Henry Landsem ’23, Noah Schultz ’23, Luke Audette ’23, Adam Husaby ’23, and Henrik Hirschbach ’25 (Hirschbach replaced McKinley after his injury).
Throughout most of the season, the Cadets were ranked in the Top 10 in Class AA. They won the Hudson Raider Invitational, with Emmett Wolff ’23 taking first place individually. Both the Varsity and JV teams won the Metro East Conference meet, with Wolff and Solomon placing first and second, respectively. At the Section Championship meet, the varsity team came in a tight second behind SP Highland Park and Two Rivers, with Wolff placing second individually. Both Wolff and Solomon qualified for the State Meet. Wolff is slated to enter the State Meet ranked 6th in Class AA, and Solomon will enter the meet ranked 25th. The Varsity team earned the Academic Gold Standard at the Section Meet with a GPA of 3.928, and Wolff will earn an Academic All-State Honors award.
FOOTBALL
In the fall of 2020, the MSHSL did not host a State Football Tournament, but the Cadets managed to go undefeated and win the Section Playoffs. Coming off of such a successful season, the Cadets hoped to retain that glory and prosperity. However, the Cadets only had three starting players on either side of the ball returning, so they focused on rebuilding 16 starting slots. With the assistance in the form of leadership from Captains Grady O’Neill ’22 , Jack Dzubnar ’22 , Leo Bluhm ’22 , Brennan Fitzgerald ’22 , Zach Santrizos ’22 , and Jackson Cercioglu ’23, Coach O’Brien began to improve the team through hard work and joint summer practices with Totino-Grace and Eden Prairie.
This season included the Cadets’ first game in the TCO Stadium against longtime rival Cretin-Derham Hall; this was the first time the two teams had met in 17 years. The Cadets
pulled through with a 41-14 victory, with touchdowns scored by Grady O’Neill ’22 , Love Adebayo ’23, and Savion Hart ’24 Another highlight was during a game against Mahtomedi. The previous season, the two teams battled through four overtimes until the Cadets finally took the win. This season the Cadets took on the Zephyrs at home, and Love Adebayo ’23 scored a touchdown with :01 second left on the play clock, and the Academy prevailed once again with an 18-13 win.
Throughout the regular season, the Cadets were ranked #2 in 5A football, only behind Mankato West in the standings. They earned the #1 seed in the Section Playoffs, and hope to make their return to the State Tournament for the third time in four years.
SOCCER
This season, the team looked to have a successful season, but they only retained half the team, with eight players graduating after last season. Returning players were Seth Moore ’22 , Matthew Zander ’22 , Henry Murray ’22 , Alexander Remick ’22 , Samuel Wischmeier ’22 , Andrew Gergen ’22 , Nicholas Henseler ’23, Tate Hinkemeyer ’23, Austin Kalmes ’23, and Colin McGill ’23. Prior to the season, Seth Moore ’22 , Matthew Zander ’22 , and Henry Murray ’22 were named as the Senior Captains, and led the team to a 9-5 record during the regular season. The Cadets were ranked #4 in the Metro East Conference, and they earned the 4th seed in the Section Playoffs. Unfortunately, the Cadets lost in the first round of the Section Playoffs in a 2-1 defeat at home against Bloomington Kennedy, and the season ended shorter than the team would have liked.
Major tilts of the season included a game against the Academy of Holy Angels, whose soccer team has had a prestigious reputation in the past. The Cadets took home a 2-1 victory over the Stars, with a pair of goals from Matthew Zander ’22 Later in the season, the Cadets prevailed over their rivals the Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders in a 3-1 win at the Cretin-Derham Hall stadium, with goals from Austin Kalmes ’23, Matthew Zander ’22 , and Henry Murray ’22 . At the end of the season, Captains Matthew Zander ’22 and Seth Moore ’22 were recognized with All-State awards.
A Day in the Life
PHOTO ESSAY
After a successful Summer Splash remodel to campus during the summer, Headmaster Woodard, Bobby Cunninghan ’22, and Board of Trustees Chair Dan Kubes ’87 cut the ceremonial ribbon in August. Improvements included a new elevator, physics lab, glass walled classrooms, a new flag pole, and a quad area that can be used for outdoor Formation or enjoying lunch!

ANY TIME I CAN CONNECT WITH THE STUDENTS AND HELP GUIDE THEM IS A HIGHLIGHT IN MY DAY.
”
Sara Krivak
YEAR STARTED AT SAINT THOMAS ACADEMY | 2020
SUBJECTS/CO-CURRICULARS/CLUBS | I coordinate coverage for teachers and also am the VIRTUS coordinator. I teach a middle school section of SOAR. I am one of the yearbook moderators.
FIRST TEACHING JOB | Second grade at Holy Trinity. I then moved on to Transfiguration and taught Kindergarten and first grade.
HOBBIES | I love to read, bake and decorate cakes, watch my kids at their games and competitions, love to travel, and take bike rides with the family to parks
A FAVORITE TEACHING MOMENT | Any time I can connect with the students and help guide them is a highlight in my day. I love getting to know the students and hear about exciting events taking place, and I also love when they come to me for advice as well.
A special time I had was when one of my former first grade students spoke as a senior about the impact I had on his life during one of the hardest times of his life.
Another favorite memory is when a student picked out a special apple to give to me. She held it the entire bus ride to school, ran in with it, and told me the apple looked so delicious on the ride to school, she just had to try it herself, but saved the rest for me. I turned the apple around to find a small bite taken out. Such a special gift, it still makes me smile!
BRUSH WITH FAME | Getting married in San Diego during Comic Con week, we had several celebrities walk past our celebration! Our guests were pretty excited to walk the beach alongside Dustin Hoffman, Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick.
FAVORITE EXPERIENCE | One of my favorite experiences was when I visited Europe. I loved exploring Paris, London, and Munich. In Munich, we were able to take a BMW factory tour which was then followed by a private tour around Munich in a classic BMW. It was so fun traveling around Munich in a classic car.
But nothing can top the experience of being a mom! I love all the adventures my kids bring me.
WHY I TEACH AT SAINT THOMAS ACADEMY | Saint Thomas Academy is a special place that cares deeply about preparing students for the future. As a Vis graduate, I understand the importance of a solid education as well as the development of becoming a strong and independent person. The preparation one receives at Saint Thomas is extraordinary, and I wanted to be part of that process.
FAVORITE MUSIC | Anything goes, oldies are always fun to listen to though!
FAVORITE VACATION SPOT | I love to visit San Diego with my family. We have great memories of our time in San Diego and I also look forward to visiting my friends who still live there.
FAMILY | Husband — Mike; Sons — Nick ’28 and Jake (4); Daughter — Chloe (8)
David Chambers
YEAR STARTED AT SAINT THOMAS ACADEMY | 2017
SUBJECTS/CO-CURRICULARS/CLUBS | Honors Precalculus, Calc 1, Intro to Python, AP Statistics, Math Team Coach
FIRST TEACHING JOB | Teaching MBA students Business Calculus at Edgewood college in Madison. The previous instructor dropped out the Friday before classes started the following Monday, so all I had to go on was the course description in the catalog.
HOBBIES | Running, reading, playing video games.
A FAVORITE TEACHING MOMENT | I worked with a deaf student who also was visually impaired. After working with him one-on-one for a couple years in his various math classes, I got to see him graduate with his Associates degree.
BRUSH WITH FAME | Interviewed for a local news station in Washington D.C. when I was 8 because we happened to walk by during filming of the movie “The Pelican Brief.”
FAVORITE EXPERIENCE | Skiing in Zermatt, Switzerland. It’s a little town where there are no cars allowed, just taxis that run on natural gas. At the inn where we stayed, the proprietor would go out to the market to get fresh ingredients to cook dinner for the guests. Seeing the Matterhorn and living in that environment for a week was incredible.
WHY I TEACH AT SAINT THOMAS ACADEMY | Teaching all boys is simultaneously exhausting and fulfilling. I love opening the boys’ eyes to the various applications of math in the real world.
FAVORITE MUSIC | I like just about anything except most country. Metal, dubstep, soundtracks, I like it all. My favorite bands/composers are Hiroyuki Sawano, Nightwish, Starset, The Weeknd, and Pendulum.
FAVORITE VACATION SPOT | Skiing in Zermatt or relaxing in Hawaii.
FAMILY | I have a wonderful wife Carena, and two amazing children, Isaac (6) and Isabelle (2).

Honoring Fr. Doffing’s Middle School Legacy
BY DAVID HOTTINGER ’85 DIRECTOR OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT
Awelcome outcome to returning to Saint Thomas Academy as a professional has been the chance to reconnect with Fr. Gordon Doffing, who was the first Director of the Middle School. Fr. Doffing resides in Arizona during the long Minnesota winter, but in the summer, he returns to St. Paul and stays in the Archbishop Roach Residence on the STA campus. Over the years, Fr. Doffing and I have had many discussions about the Academy, the history, the move to Mendota Heights, and how the conclusion of the boarding program led to the inception of the Middle School. Looking back, it’s clear that Fr. Doffing set the table for what has become a vibrant and integral component of STA. Our Middle School students are immersed in the STA expectations, culture, and strong academics but have always been able to maintain their own identity. Many of the student leaders in the Upper School can trace their leadership roots back to their time in the Middle School. Father Doffing laid the groundwork for all of this, and we thank him for providing the guidance, vision, faith, energy, and patience.
This fall, the whole school has enjoyed a great start to the school year! It has been rewarding to have guests back on campus for a variety of gatherings. We had a successful Reunion Week, Grandparents Day, and are gearing up for our Veterans Day and the Final Promotion
Ceremonies in November. We are also proud to show the additions, renovations, and investments that were made on campus over the summer. Founders Hall is spectacular and the long-awaited elevator has already been put to good use. The Quad outside of Founders Hall has also been a beautiful and functional addition to our outdoor space. This work does not happen without support from the STA community and we are truly grateful for and humbled by your generosity. Thank you!
Finally, the Advancement department will be heading out-of-state beginning late this year with scheduled events this November in Dallas, TX and February in Naples, FL. Arizona and California are also in the works and we’ll keep you updated with those dates. I encourage you to join us at one of these events and hear from our Headmaster, Kelby Woodard, who will be updating everyone on current happenings and future plans for STA.
Thanks again to our benefactors that have made a difference and to all that contribute in so many ways toward the betterment of Saint Thomas Academy.
Go Cadets!
