VEREHRTES PUBLIKUM, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, zum Gesangswettbewerb „Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ wünsche ich allen Sänger*innen, aber auch der international besetzten hochkarätigen Jury unter ihrem Präsidenten Prof. Siegfried Jerusalem, viel Erfolg bei Präsentation und Auswahl.

Die Etablierung eines neuen, international ausgerichteten Gesangswettbewerbs ist ein durchaus ehrgeiziges Unternehmen. Aber hier in Nürnberg, der Stadt der Meistersinger, sind die Voraussetzungen dafür bestens: Die Stadt und die Region verfügen über eine exzellente Musik- und Operngeschichte, die beim Minnegesang ihren Ursprung nahm, St. Sebald und St. Lorenz waren wichtige Zentren der Kirchenmusik sowie des Mysterienspiels und der Instrumentenbau erlebte in Nürnberg eine große Blüte. Vor allem aber die Tradition der Singschulen und der berühmte Dichter Hans Sachs wurden in Richard Wagners Oper „Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ verewigt. Hier knüpft der Gesangswettbewerb „Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ an. Weltweit wurden Sängerinnen und Sänger eingeladen, sich über internationale Vorauswahlen in Toronto, Paris, Moskau, Hamburg, Stockholm und Nürnberg um die hochdotierten Preise zu bewerben. Die Besten wurden nach Nürnberg in das Staatstheater eingeladen und treffen dort die international zusammengesetzte Jury von Gesangsspezialisten.

Gerne habe ich für diesen Wettbewerb die Schirmherrschaft übernommen. Er steht für den Kulturstandort Nürnberg als Ganzes und stellt auch seine enge Verbundenheit mit der Region unter Beweis: Bereits die Vorrunden, das Semifinale und das Finale im Opernhaus sind öffentlich – und zum krönenden Abschluss können alle Nürnberger*innen auf dem Hauptmarkt ein Konzert mit den Preisträger*innen des Wettbewerbs zusammen mit GMD Marcus Bosch und der Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg erleben. Auf die Meistersinger von morgen!

For the “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" Singing Competition I wish all the singers, as well as the top-class international panel of judges under its chairman Prof. Siegfried Jerusalem, every success in the presentation and selection.

Establishing a new, international song competition is a thoroughly ambitious undertaking. But Nuremberg, the city of the Meistersinger, is ideally placed to do so: the city and the region have an excellent history of music and opera, which started off with the Minnegesang, or troubadour songs; St. Sebald and St. Lorenz were important centres of church music and mystery plays, and instrument making flourished in Nuremberg. Yet more than anything it was the tradition of the singing schools and the famous poet Hans Sachs that Richard Wagner's opera “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" immortalised.

It is to this tradition that the “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" Singing Competition belongs.

The world over, singers have been invited to enter the contest through international pre-selections in Toronto, Paris, Moscow, Hamburg and Stockholm, to compete for the substantial prizes. The best singers will be invited to the Staatstheater in Nuremberg, where they will meet the international panel of song specialist judges.

I was delighted to be made the patron of this contest. It stands for the cultural location Nuremberg and also demonstrates its close ties with the region: The preliminary rounds, the semi-final and the final at the Opernhaus are open to the public – and for the crowning conclusion all the good folk of Nuremberg are welcome to the Hauptmarkt to experience a concert with the prize-winners of the contest along with Musical Director Marcus Bosch and the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg. To the Meistersingers of tomorrow!

: PRÄSIDENT DER JURY

SEHR GEEHRTE DAMEN UND HERREN, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, als Staatsintendant Peter Theiler mich fragte, ob ich den Vorsitz der Jury für einen neu zu gründenden Gesangswettbewerb übernehmen wolle, musste ich nicht lange nachdenken um dies freudig zu bejahen.

Die ganze Anlage, angefangen bei den internationalen Vorauswahlen, die beiden Schwerpunkte Allgemeines und Deutsches Fach, der große Unterstützerkreis und nicht zuletzt der gute Ruf des Staatstheaters Nürnberg und meine persönliche Verbundenheit mit der Region und dem Haus machten mir die Entscheidung leicht.

Was macht aber einen guten Gesangswettbewerb aus? Die exzellenten Kandidat*innen! Diese aber gilt es zu finden. Dass sich auf Anhieb über 500 Sänger*innen weltweit für den Wettbewerb beworben haben, zeigt, dass dies gelungen ist. Als Präsident der Jury war es mir wichtig, bei allen Vorauswahlen persönlich anwesend zu sein, um so einen verbindlichen Eindruck über die Qualität der Bewerber*innen zu erhalten. Knapp 90 davon kommen nun nach Nürnberg, um sich den Herausforderungen zu stellen. Als Sänger weiß ich, wie viel Mühe, persönlicher Einsatz, Aufregung und manchmal auch Glück dazu gehört, um am Ende mit einem Preis nach Hause zu gehen … Ihnen allen, auch denen, die im Verlauf des Wettbewerbs nicht in die nächsten Runden kommen, danke ich an dieser Stelle herzlich für ihr Engagement, ihr künstlerisches Wollen und wünsche Ihnen in jedem Fall einen erfüllenden weiteren Werdegang.

Attraktiv wird ein Wettbewerb aber auch durch die Mitglieder der Jury. Und Staatsintendant Peter Theiler hat eine wirklich hochkarätige, international besetzte Fachjury für den Wettbewerb gewonnen, die sowohl die Kompetenz der Stimmbeurteilung mitbringt, als auch, da viele von ihnen erfolgreich wichtige Opernhäuser leiten, über konkrete Möglichkeiten verfügen, den Sänger*innen weitere Türen zu öffnen. Und das soll der Wettbewerb ja zu guter Letzt sein: Ein Sprungbrett in die Welt der Oper.

When General Director Peter Theiler asked me if I wanted to chair the jury of a new singing competition, I did not need to think long before happily saying yes.

The entire setup, starting with the international preliminary selection process, the two main General and German categories, the large group of supporters and last but not least the good reputation of Staatstheater Nürnberg and my personal connection to the region and the institution made it an easy decision for me.

What defines a good singing competition?

Excellent candidates, of course! But first you need to find them. The fact that 500 singers applied to the competition right away, from all over the world, shows that it was a success. As the president of the jury, I believed it was important to attend all the preliminary selection rounds in person so I could get a good sense of the quality of the competitors.

Nearly 90 people will now be coming to Nuremberg to accept the challenge. As a singer, I know how much effort, personal commitment, excitement and sometimes even luck goes into coming home with a prize … I want to thank all of you for your dedication and artistic drive, and I wish you all the best for your future career no matter what happens.

A competition is also often attractive because of its jury members – and General Director Peter Theiler has put together a truly high-quality international jury of experts for this competition.

They contribute their skill in evaluating voices as well as an ability to open further doors for the singers, since many of them successfully manage important opera houses. And ultimately, that is the point of this competition: providing a springboard into the world of opera.

LIEBE FREUNDINNEN UND FREUNDE DES STAATSTHEATERS, DEAR FRIENDS OF THE STAATSTHEATER, vor zwei Jahren starteten wir mit der Idee, in und für Nürnberg einen neuen international ausgerichteten Gesangswettbewerb zu initiieren, den Gesangswettbewerb „Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“.

Der Titel verweist auf die wunderbare gleichnamige Oper Richard Wagners, auf die lange Musikund Sangestradition in Nürnberg und vor allem auf das besondere Merkmal des Wettbewerbs: Denn wir suchen nicht nur begabte Sängerinnen und Sänger für das Allgemeine Fach, sondern auch für das Deutsche Fach – hiermit sind v.a. Werke der deutschen Romantik und Spätromantik gemeint.

Besonders gefreut hat uns, dass die Idee, diesen Gesangswettbewerb zukünftig alle zwei Jahre auszurichten, auf begeisterte Resonanz gestoßen ist und schnell waren die vielen Förderer und Unterstützer für dieses Projekt gewonnen: Angefangen bei der Stadt Nürnberg, die mit der Übernahme der Schirmherrschaft durch Oberbürgermeister Dr. Ulrich Maly, der Stiftung eines Preises und der Kooperation beim abschließenden Konzert auf dem Hauptmarkt tatkräftig das Vorhaben unterstützt, über die Commerzbank, unseren Hauptsponsor und die Freunde der Staatsoper Nürnberg e.V., die sich unter ihrem Präsidenten Dr. Roland Fleck großzügig als Mäzene des Wettbewerbes erweisen. Aber auch der Damenclub zur Förderung der Oper und Opera Viva, die vielen zum Teil privaten Preisstifter und Preissponsoren sowie unsere Basispartner, die Partnerhotels, die Lufthansa als Preferred Carrier und unsere Partner der internationalen Vorauswahlen ermöglichen die Ausrichtung dieses besonderen Ereignisses.

Two years ago, we started the “Meistersinger von Nürnberg” singing competition with the idea of creating a new internationally focused singing competition in and for the city of Nuremberg.

The title refers to Richard Wagner’s wonderful opera of the same name (in English: ”The Master-Singers of Nuremberg“), and above all to the special feature of this competition – we are looking for talented singers not just in the General category, but also in the German category. That especially includes works from the German Romantic and Late Romantic periods.

We were especially pleased that the idea of holding this singing competition every two years in the future met with an enthusiastic response, and we quickly found many patrons and supporters for the project. These include the City of Nuremberg, which is actively supporting the project through the patronage of Mayor Dr. Ulrich Maly, by funding a prize, and by cooperating in the final concert at the Hauptmark, as well as our main sponsor Commerzbank and the Freunde der Staatsoper Nürnberg e.V., which together with their President Dr. Roland Fleck is generously acting as a patron for the competition.

In addition, the Damenclub zu Förderung der Oper and Opera Viva, the many private prize donors and prize sponsors, our primary partners, partner hotels, Lufthansa as the preferred air carrier and our partners for the international preliminary selection processes all make this special event possible.

In order to turn the singers’ competition into a citywide festival, we have opened the competition up to the public starting with the preliminary rounds – and we especially look forward to your attendance during the ceremonial finale in the Opera House, or at the prizewinners’ concert at the Hauptmarkt the next day: a free open-air show titled: “The New 2016 Meistersinger!”

SINGING COMPETITION “DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG“ 2016 Der vom Staatstheater Nürnberg ins Leben gerufene Gesangswettbewerb „Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ findet ab 2016 alle zwei Jahre in der Stadt der Meistersinger statt und widmet sich insbesondere der Pflege des Deutschen Fachs.

Das Staatstheater Nürnberg ist mit 550 Festangestellten in den Sparten Oper, Schauspiel, Ballett und Konzert und mehr als 700 Veranstaltungen im Jahr eines der großen Mehrspartenhäuser Deutschlands und das größte in Bayern. Unter der Leitung von Staatsintendant Peter Theiler konnte das Staatstheater Nürnberg über alle Sparten hinweg kontinuierlich seine Auslastungszahlen und das überregionale Renommee steigern. Vor allem durch die zahlreichen internationalen Koproduktionen mit den Theatern in Straßburg, Toulouse und Bordeaux, aber auch Venedig, Belfast, Paris, London, Graz, Bern, Wien und Nizza wurde das Staatstheater Nürnberg dabei zu einem wichtigen Kulturbotschafter der Stadt Nürnberg.

The „Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ singing competition, launched by the Nuremberg State Theatre, will take place every two years as of 2016, in the city of the Meistersinger and will particularly devote itself to fostering the German category.

The Nuremberg State Theatre is the largest in Bavaria, and one of the largest multi-purpose venues in Germany, with 550 permanent employees in the fields of opera, theatre, ballet and concerts, and stages more than 700 productions a year. Under the direction of artistic director Peter Theiler, the Nuremberg State Theatre could continue to further its capacity in all artistic fields and enhance its national reputation in the years to come. Particularly due to the numerous international co-productions with theatres in Strasbourg, Toulouse and Bordeaux, and also in Venice, Belfast, Paris, London, Graz, Berne, Vienna and Nice, the Nuremberg State Theatre has become an important cultural ambassador for the city of Nuremberg.

NÜRNBERG – DIE STADT DER MEISTERSINGER Nürnberg selbst verfügt über eine reiche Musik- und Operngeschichte, die sich bis in das Mittelalter verfolgen lässt. So war die einstige Kaiserburg ein Zentrum des Minnegesangs, die Kirchen St. Sebald und St. Lorenz, sowie die zahlreichen Klöster bildeten wichtige Zentren der Kirchenmusik und des Mysterienspiels. Fastnachtsspiele wurden vor allem durch Hans Sachs (1494-1576) beliebt, Singschulen etablierten sich und Nürnberg wurde zur gerühmten Stadt der Meistersinger. So verbinden sich Walther von Stolzing, Tannhäuser und Wolfram von Eschenbach mit Nürnberg.

Im 19. Jahrhundert entwickelte sich Nürnberg schließlich zu einem Sehnsuchtsort der Romantiker.

Das mittelalterliche Stadtbild und seine reichen Traditionen ließen es als das Ideal einer deutschen Stadt erscheinen. Und so entdeckte auch Richard Wagner die Reichsstadt Nürnberg, den Dichter Hans Sachs und die Welt der Meistersinger als Sujet für das Musiktheater und verewigte damit den Namen der Stadt in den Opernspielplänen der Welt. Vor allem aber stehen „Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ (1868) für die Utopie einer freien Bürgergesellschaft, in der Fragen der Kunst, der Tradition und des Fortschritts singend diskursiv verhandelt werden.

NUREMBERG – THE CITY OF THE MEISTERSINGER Nuremberg itself has a rich musical and operatic history, which can be traced right back to the Middle Ages. And thus the former imperial castle was a centre of troubadour songs, and the churches of St. Sebald and St. Lorenz, as well as the numerous monasteries, formed important centres for church music and mystery plays. Fastnachtspiele (Shrovetide plays) - particularly those by Hans Sachs (1494-1576) - became popular, singing schools were established, and Nuremberg became the famous city of the Meistersinger. This connects Walther von Stolzing, Tannhäuser and Wolfram von Eschenbach with Nuremberg.

In the 19th century, Nuremberg finally became a place of longing for the Romantics. The medieval cityscape and its rich traditions meant that it had the appearance of the ideal German city. And in such a way, Richard Wagner discovered the imperial city of Nuremberg, the poet Hans Sachs and the world of the Meistersinger as a theme for the concert hall, and thereby immortalized the name of the city in world-wide opera repertoire. Above all however ”Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ (1868) stands for the utopia of a free civil society, in which questions of art, tradition and progress are illustrated through song.

PROF. SIEGFRIED JERUSALEM PRÄSIDENT DER JURY PRESIDENT OF THE JURY Siegfried Jerusalem, geboren in Oberhausen, absolvierte von 1955 bis 1960 ein Musikstudium an der Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen in den Fächern Fagott, Klavier und Geige. Von 1961 bis 1977 war er als Fagottist in verschiedenen Orchestern tätig, zuletzt beim Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart. Ab 1971 nahm er Gesangsunterricht bei Hertha Kalcher in Stuttgart.

1975 begann Siegfried Jerusalems Karriere als Sänger, als er bei einer TV-Produktion von Johann Strauss‘ Operette „Der Zigeunerbaron“ für Franco Bonisolli einsprang. Gastverträge führten ihn als Lohengrin u.a. nach Darmstadt, Aachen, Hamburg, Stuttgart und Zürich. 1977 debütierte er als Froh in „Das Rheingold“ und junger Seemann in „Tristan und Isolde“ bei den Bayreuther Festspielen und ein Jahr später als Tamino in „Die Zauberflöte“ an der Deutschen Oper Berlin. Weitere Engagements führten ihn u.a. nach Wien, New York, Mailand, Paris, London, Köln, Genf, Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto und Washington. Große Erfolge feierte er 1988 und 1989 als Siegfried in „Siegfried“ und „Götterdämmerung“ bei den Bayreuther Festspielen und 1990 an der Metropolitan Opera in New York. Dort sang er in der Zyklusproduktion von „Der Ring des Nibelungen“ auch Loge in „Das Rheingold“. Sein Rollendebüt als Tristan in „Tristan und Isolde“ gab Siegfried Jerusalem zur Eröffnung der Bayreuther Festspiele 1993. In den letzten Jahren stand er u.a. Aegisth in „Elektra“ (u.a. in New York, London, Neapel und Berlin), Herodes in „Salome“ (in Tokio, New York, Rom, Hamburg und Valencia) und Danilo in „Die lustige Witwe“ (Berlin) auf der Bühne. Im Herbst 2015 war er als Balthasar Zorn in „Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ an der Deutschen Oper Berlin zu erleben.

Für seine Plattenaufnahmen erhielt Siegfried Jerusalem zahlreiche Preise, darunter auch mehrfach den Grammy Award. 1997 wurde ihm das Bundesverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse durch Bundespräsident Roman Herzog verliehen. Seit 2001 ist Siegfried Jerusalem Professor an der Hochschule für Musik in Nürnberg, der er von 2001 bis 2009 als Präsident vorstand.

Siegfried Jerusalem, born in Oberhausen, completed a music degree at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen from 1955 to 1960, in the fields of bassoon, piano and violin. From 1961 to 1977, he played the bassoon in various orchestras, most recently in the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Stuttgart. Starting in 1971, he took voice lessons with Hertha Kalcher in Stuttgart.

Siegfried Jerusalem’s career as a singer began in 1975 when he stood in for Franco Bonisolli in a TV production of Johann Strauss’ operetta “The Gypsy Baron.” Guest engagements in the role of Lohengrin took him to Darmstadt, Aachen, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Zurich, among other places. In 1977, he made his debut as Froh in “The Rhinegold” and the Young Sailor in “Tristan and Isolde” at the Bayreuth Festival, and a year later he played Tamino in “The Magic Flute” at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Other engagements took him to Vienna, New York, Milan, Paris, London, Cologne, Geneva, Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto and Washington, among other places. He received wide acclaim in 1988 and 1989 when he played Siegfried in “Siegfried” and “Twilight of the Gods” at the Bayreuth Festival, and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1990. There, he also sang the part of Loge in “The Rhinegold” in the cycle production of the “Ring of the Nibelung.”

Siegfried Jerusalem first played the role of Tristan, in “Tristan and Isolde,” at the opening of the Bayreuth Festival in 1993. In recent years, he has played Aegisthus in “Elektra” (including in New York, London, Naples and Berlin), Herod in “Salome” (in Tokyo, New York, Rome, Hamburg and Valencia), and Danilo in “The Merry Widow” (Berlin). In the fall of 2015, he was seen as Balthasar Zorn in “The Master-Singers of Nuremberg” at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Siegfried Jerusalem has won numerous prizes for his recordings, including several Grammy Awards. In 1997, he was granted the Federal Cross of Merit First Class by German President Roman Herzog. Since 2001, Siegfried Jerusalem has been a professor at Nuremberg University of Music, where he was the University President from 2001 to 2009.

DORIAN KEILHACK VORSITZENDER RICHARD-WAGNER-VERBAND NÜRNBERG CHAIRMAN OF THE RICHARD-WAGNER-VERBAND NÜRNBERG Dorian Keilhack studierte Klavier und Dirigieren an den Musikhochschulen in Nürnberg und Freiburg und an der Juilliard School in New York. Er war u.a. Kapellmeister am Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck und am Theater Erfurt und 1. Kapellmeister am Theater Bern. Er dirigierte die Orchester der Theater in Mannheim, Bonn, Mainz u.a. Ihre Karriere führte sie an alle bedeutenden Opernhäuser weltweit. 1995 wurde sie zur Schwedischen Hofsängerin ernannt und erhielt die Ehrendoktorwürde der Technischen Universität Luleå.

Zum Ende der Opernsaison, vom 23. bis 27. Juli 2016, wird im Nürnberger Opernhaus der 1. Gesangswettbewerb „Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ ausgetragen, ein Wettbewerb, der nicht nur an die Tradition des früheren MeistersängerWettbewerbs anknüpft, der bis in die 90er Jahre hier ausgetragen wurde, sondern darüber hinaus auch an die Tradition des spätmittelalterlichen Meistersangs der Nürnberger Handwerksmeister.

Zwischen den Vorauswahlen der Wettbewerbsteilnehmer in Moskau und Hamburg haben der Vorsitzende der Jury Prof. Siegfried Jerusalem und Staatsintendant Peter Theiler sich mit Pressesprecherin Verena Kögler zu einem Gespräch über den neuen Wettbewerb getroffen:

At the end of the opera season, from 23 to 27 July 2016, the first singing competition, “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg”, will be held at Nuremberg Opera House. The competition harks back not only to the tradition of the former master singing competition which was held here until the 1990s, but also to the tradition of singing amongst Nuremberg’s master craftsmen in the late Middle Ages. The foreman of the jury, Prof. Siegfried Jerusalem, and state director Peter Theiler met press speaker Verena Kögler between the screening stages of competitors in Moscow and Hamburg to talk about the new competition.

Verena Kögler: Das Staatstheater Nürnberg bringt einen neuen Gesangswettbewerb in die Sängerwelt. Die Frage richtet sich, Herr Prof. Jerusalem, an den Pädagogen und den Sänger gleichermaßen: Was bedeuten Wettbewerbe für junge Sängerinnen und Sänger?

Verena Kögler: Nuremberg State Theatre is introducing a new singing competition to the singing world. My first question is addressed to both teachers and singers, Herr Prof. Jerusalem: what exactly do these competitions mean for young singers?

Prof. Siegfried Jerusalem: I view this slightly critically, and personally I never took part in a singing competition during my career as a singer, because I was already too old for the competitions at the time.

But there are undoubtedly also benefits: young singers tend to concentrate on their work when preparing for a competition, both technically and musically, more than they would do at school, and focus on the contexts of the pieces they choose. That’s important, because you can soon see if a singer doesn’t know what he or she is singing about when they’re up on stage! There are also some young singers, however, who only think of competitions. That’s not right, because they should be thinking about the songs themselves, and the backgrounds to them.

Prof. Siegfried Jerusalem: Ich sehe das zwar kritisch und ich persönlich habe im Lauf meiner Sängerkarriere nie an einem Gesangswettbewerb teilgenommen, weil ich für die damaligen Wettbewerbe dann schon zu alt war. Aber es hat auch Vorteile: Junge Sänger konzentrieren sich in der Vorbereitung für einen Wettbewerb mehr als sonst im Hochschulalltag auf ihre Arbeit, technisch, musikalisch, und sie beschäftigen sich mit den Kontexten der gewählten Beiträge. Das ist wichtig, denn: Ein unwissender Sänger auf der Bühne, das merkt man sofort! Es gibt allerdings auch junge Sängerinnen und Sänger, die denken nur an Wettbewerbe. Das ist aber nicht richtig, denn sie sollten sich mehr um die Stücke und deren Hintergründe kümmern.

Staatsintendant Peter Theiler, Sie haben den neuen Wettbewerb initiiert, dabei den Namen Nürnbergs ins Zentrum gerückt. Was bringt die Ausrichtung eines solchen Gesangswettbewerbs für ein Theater oder für eine Stadt?

Peter Theiler: Bei dem Wettbewerb habe ich zuerst an die Stadt gedacht, das Staatstheater selbst ist bereits bestens international vernetzt und hat sich durch zahlreiche Koproduktionen und Kooperationen überregional einen guten Namen gemacht. Aber den Namen Nürnbergs als Kulturstadt international zu stärken, ihn nach außen zu tragen, das ist ein wichtiges Ziel. Das bildet sich zum einen im Titel des Gesangswettbewerbs ab, „Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“, und auch darin, dass Oberbürgermeister Dr. Ulrich Maly die Schirmherrschaft dafür übernommen hat.

State director Peter Theiler, you organised the new competition, and by doing so you’ve put the name ‘Nuremberg’ centre-stage. What does the orientation of a singing competition like this do for a theatre or city?

Peter Theiler: When I was first setting up the competition, I was thinking of the city. The State Theatre itself is already part of a great international network, and has built up a great international reputation through a wide range of co-productions and collaborations. But strengthening the name of Nuremberg internationally, and putting it on the map as a cultural centre, is an important goal. You can see that just in the title of the competition, “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg”, and by the fact that the city’s mayor, Dr. Ulrich Maly, became a patron of the competition.

Woher kam die Idee?

Where did the idea come from?

P. T.: I came upon the idea when I was a juror P. S. J.: Wenn ein Sänger ehrlich mit seiner Stimme arbeitet, dann ist man erst über 35 Jahre hinaus reif, in diesem Repertoire zu singen. Die Stimme braucht im deutschen Fach eine Reife, auch wenn die dargestellten Figuren ganz junge Männer sind wie Siegmund oder Parsifal. – Ich habe mit 38 Jahren in

Having an age limit – of 43 for women and 45 for men – is something else that’s unusual about the competition.

P. T.: The invitation to take part in the German category means raising the age of competitors is unavoidable: the limit for applicants in the general category is 33 for women and 35 for men; in the German category, meanwhile, this rises to 43 and 45 respectively.

S. J.: If a singer is working honestly with his voice, then he’s only really going to be ready to sing this repertoire from the age of 35 onwards. In the German category, the voice has to have a certain maturity, even if the figures portrayed are quite young men, such as Siegmund or Parsifal. – I sang

INTERVIEW

Wien meinen ersten Parsifal gesungen und den ganzen nächsten Tag lang Kopfschmerzen gehabt. – Reife erwirbt man nicht durch den Gesangsunterricht an der Hochschule, das entwickelt sich, wenn man auf der Bühne steht. Und es braucht Ausgewogenheit, man sollte neben diesem Fach auch immer wieder Mozart singen und Lieder.

Was müssen die Bewerber mitbringen?

P. T.: Wir haben für den Wettbewerb einen Kanon für jedes Stimmfach festgelegt. Die Teilnehmer müssen sechs Titel davon vorbereiten, darunter muss in jedem Fall eine Mozart-Partie sein.

Wer sich im deutschen Fach bewirbt und unter der Altersgrenze von 33 bzw. 35 Jahren liegt, der muss dazu drei deutsche Arien und eine im allgemeinen Fach anbieten. Wer im Bereich bis 43 bzw. 45 Jahre gemeldet ist, muss vier deutsche Titel anbieten. Die Sängerinnen und Sänger legen bei ihrer Bewerbung selbst fest, in welchem Fach sie starten möchten, sie können auch im allgemeinen und im deutschen Fach antreten. Auch die Preise sind kumulierbar: Wer z.B. im allgemeinen Fach den 1. Preis gewinnt, kann darüber hinaus auch im deutschen Fach einen weiteren 3. Preis bekommen, vielleicht auch noch den Publikumspreis dazu. Die Höhe der Preisgelder bei unserem Wettbewerb ist beachtlich: 10.000 € für die 1. Preise, 6.000 € jeweils für die 2. Preisträger und 4.000 als 3. Preise.

Die erste Hürde, die die Bewerber zu nehmen hatten, ist, eine Einladung zu einer der Vorauswahlen (in Paris, Hamburg, Toronto, Moskau, Stockholm und Nürnberg) zu erhalten. Dafür haben Sie die mit der Bewerbung eingesandten Aufnahmen der Sängerinnen und Sänger angehört. Die ersten Vorauswahlen haben auch bereits stattgefunden. Können Sie schon eine Zwischenbilanz ziehen?

Das mit den Tonaufzeichnungen funktioniert weitgehend ganz gut. Für die Vorauswahl in Paris hatten wir z.B. 38 Bewerber eingeladen, davon werden wir 12 in Nürnberg wieder hören.

S. J.: In Hamburg hatten wir so viele Kandidaten, dass die Vorauswahl über zwei Tage lief. Einige Bewerberinnen und Bewerber haben wir auch nach Nürnberg eingeladen. Allerdings: Mehr als 70 Teilnehmer sollten es für den Wettbewerb nicht werden.

P. T.: Ein Phänomen hat sich bei der Sichtung der Bewerbungen und den ersten Vorauswahlen

What will the participants have to have to make it into the competition?

P. T.: We’ve set out a canon for each voice category for the competition. The competitors have to prepare six titles from these, which must always include one Mozart role. Anyone applying for the German category who is below 33 in the case of women or 35 for men also has to sing three German arias and one in the general category. Anyone registered in the category of up to 43 or 45 years of age has to provide four German titles. The singers set out which category they would like to start in themselves when submitting their application, and can also appear in the general and German categories. Prizes are also cumulative: anyone winning first prize in the general category, for example, can also win another third prize in the German category, as well as the audience prize. The level of prize money participants can win is considerable: € 10,000 for the first prizes, € 6,000 for winners of the second prizes, and € 4,000 for third prize.

The first hurdle applicants have to overcome was to receive an invitation to one of the screening stages (held in Paris, Hamburg, Toronto, Moscow, Stockholm and Nuremberg). To do this, you listened to recordings of the applicants which had been sent in with their applications. The first screening stages have already been held. Can you give us an interim result?

P. T.: My deputy Johann Casimir Eule and I listened to every one of the submissions by more than 500 applicants, and reached a decision on who should be going on to participate in one of the screening stages. Everything works very well with the recordings. For the screening stage in Paris, for example, we had invited 38 applicants, 12 of whom we’ll be hearing again in Nuremberg.

S. J.: In Hamburg we had so many candidates that the screening stage was held over two days. We invited some of these applicants to Nuremberg as well. Eventually, though, the competition shouldn’t have more than 70 participants.

P. T.: Something rather unexpected arose during the screening of the applications and the first screening stages: we had several applicants

S. J.: Für den Sponsor ist es wichtig, dass bei einem Projekt mit solch großer Ausstrahlung auch sein Name drauf steht. Und dass sein Unternehmen damit auch eine starke Verbundenheit mit der Region zum Ausdruck bringen kann.

P. T.: Natürlich ist es auch ein Anreiz für Sponsoren, den Firmennamen mit einer Kultureinrichtung zu verknüpfen und die Stadt Nürnberg damit zu unterstützen. Allen ist bewusst, dass dieser internationale Wettbewerb eine starke Imageförderung für Nürnberg, die Metropolregion und das eigene Unternehmen bedeutet.

Ein besonderes Highlight für Nürnberg folgt am Tag nach dem Finale?

P. T.: Unser Gesangswettbewerb endet mit einem Preisträgerkonzert am 28. Juli im Herzen der Stadt, auf dem Nürnberger Hauptmarkt. Dort präsentieren wir die „neuen Meistersinger 2016“ in einem Open Air-Konzert mit der Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg unter der Leitung von GMD Marcus Bosch und knüpfen räumlich und zeitlich unmittelbar an das Bardentreffen an, denn am 29. Juli startet an gleicher Stelle das alljährliche Nürnberger Sängertreffen.

And there’s to be a special highlight for Nuremberg on the day immediately after the final?

P. T.: Our singing competition will end with the prizewinners’ concert on 28 July at the very heart of the city, at Hauptmarkt in Nuremberg. That's where we’ll be presenting the “New Meistersinger 2016” at an open-air concert with the Nuremberg State Philharmonic Orchestra directed by GMD Marcus Bosch, and connecting directly, in time and place, to the Bardentreffen, because the annual Nuremberg Meeting of Singers starts at the same place on 29 July.

ALEXANDRA GOLOUBITSKAIA PIANISTIN PIANIST Alexandra Goloubitskaia wurde in Moldawien geboren. Alexandra Goloubitskaia ist Ensemblemitglied der Staatsoper Hannover. Weitere Engagements führten sie u. a. an die Wiener Staatsoper, die Oper Stuttgart, die Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, an die Komische Oper Berlin, und die Opernhäuser in Dortmund, Prag, Brünn, Bremen, Wuppertal, Braunschweig und Klagenfurt sowie zu den Bayreuther Festspielen. 2011 erschien ihre CD mit Liedern argentinischer und mexikanischer Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts.

RITA KAUFMANN PIANISTIN PIANIST Rita Kaufmann studierte nach dem Abitur Klavier an der Universität Mozarteum Salzburg und Liedbegleitung und Kammermusik an der Royal Academy of Music in London. Beide Studien schloss sie mit Auszeichnung ab. Ein erstes Festengagement führte sie ans Theater Regensburg. Seit 2004 ist sie am Staatstheater Nürnberg engagiert, zunächst als Solorepetitorin, seit 2008 als Studienleiterin. Hier konnte sie sich neben der Erarbeitung eines großen Opernrepertoires auch immer wieder ihrer Passion für das Lied und die Kammermusik widmen. Als Liedbegleiterin und Kammermusikpartnerin war sie in den letzten Jahren regelmäßig beim Internationalen Kammermusikfestival Nürnberg und beim Festival Fränkischer Sommer zu Gast. Musikalische Assistenzen für Opernproduktionen führten sie nach Lissabon („Das Rheingold“) und San Diego („Der Rosenkavalier“). Solistisch war Rita Kaufmann 2011 in den Produktionen des Balletts des Staatstheater Nürnberg „Vasos Communicantes“ mit Solostücken von Johann Sebastian Bach sowie 2013 in „Faust“ mit Musik von Lera Auerbach auf der Bühne zu erleben. Seit 2003 wird sie wiederholt zu Meisterkursen für Lied- und Operngestaltung am China Conservatory of Music, Peking, eigeladen.

After finishing high school, Rita Kaufmann studied piano at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts Mozarteum Salzburg, and lieder accompaniment and chamber music at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In Kyoto gestaltete sie 2003 einen Klavierabend und trat als Solistin (2. Klavierkonzert von C. Saint-Saëns) mit den Osaka-Philharmonikern auf. Als Repetitorin war sie an verschiedenen Opernhäuser in Japan tätig.

2010/2011 erhielt Satomi Nishi ein Engagement als Solorepetitorin am Theater Regensburg und ist seit der Spielzeit 2014/2015 Studienleiterin. Sie trat als Solistin (3.Klavierkonzert von L.v.Beethoven) mit dem Philharmonischen Orchester Regensburg auf und dirigierte u.a. „Die Zauberflöte“ und „Madama Butterfly“. Bei Seymour Barabs Kinderoper „Rotkäppchen" und bei Grigori Frids Monooper „Das Tagebuch der Anne Frank“ hatte Satomi Nishi die Musikalische Leitung inne.

Satomi Nishi was born in Osaka, Japan, and began taking piano and violin lessons at an early age. She completed her degree and a master class at Kyoto City University of Arts in Japan. She also spent time at University of the Arts Bremen as an exchange student. She has worked as a coach at various opera houses in Japan. Satomi Nishi had an engagement as a solo coach at Theater Regensburg in 2010/2011, and has been the Director of Studies since the 2014/2015 season. She performed as a soloist with the Regensburg Philharmonic Orchestra (3rd Piano Concerto by L. v. Beethoven) and has directed “The Magic Flute” and “Madame Butterfly,” among other works. Satomi Nishi was also the musical director for Seymour Barab’s children’s opera “Little Red Riding Hood” and for Grigori Frid’s mono-opera “The Diary of Anne Frank.”

CHRISTIAN REUTER PIANIST PIANIST Christian Reuter ist seit vielen Jahren am Staatstheater Nürnberg als Kapellmeister und Pianist engagiert. Von Mozarts „Die Zauberflöte“, Puccinis „Madama Butterfly“ und Schrekers „Der ferne Klang“ über Loewes „My fair Lady“ bis hin zu Rihms „Die Eroberung von Mexico“ hat er über siebzig Opern, Operetten und Ballette dirigiert. Christian Reuter widmet sich auch mit besonderer Vorliebe pianistischen Aufgaben sei es als Liedbegleiter, Pianist bei den Bamberger oder Nürnberger Symphonikern und in Konzerten der Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg. So wirkt er auch regelmäßig bei den Kammerkonzerten der Philharmonie mit.

Als Gast dirigierte er zahlreiche große Orchester in Europa, Amerika und Asien, darunter die Staatskapelle Dresden, die Münchner Philharmoniker, das Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI di Torino, das Orchestre National de Belgique, das Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, das Orchestre National de Lyon, das Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, das Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester und das Deutsche Symphonie Orchester Berlin, das MDR Sinfonieorchester und die Deutsche Radio Philharmonie. Als Operndirigent gastierte er u. a. an der Sächsischen Staatsoper, der Komischen Oper Berlin, am Theater Basel, der Göteborgs Opera und am Teatro Filarmonico Verona („Tristan und Isolde“).

Regelmäßiger Gast ist er an der Hamburgischen Staatsoper, wo er seit seinem Debüt mit „Fidelio“ im September 2005 u. a. „Die Entführung aus dem Serail“, „Der Freischütz“, „Falstaff“ und „Macbeth“ dirigiert hat und zuletzt mit York Höllers „Der Meister und Margarita“ zur Spielzeiteröffnung 2013/2014 große Erfolge feierte. Zahlreiche Uraufführungen, die Dirigate bei der Münchener Biennale sowie der Händel-Preis der Stadt Halle, stehen für die breite stilistische Kompetenz des Dirigenten. Gerade die Auseinandersetzung mit der historischen Aufführungspraxis – so die Meinung der Kritik – lassen seine Interpretationen von Werken Brahms, Wagners und Bruckners oft in neuem Licht erscheinen. In den letzten Jahren ist eine umfangreiche Diskographie entstanden, zu der die auch international beachteten Gesamt-aufnahmen der Sinfonien von Johannes Brahms und Anton Bruckner zählen sowie zuletzt die DVD-Aufzeichnung von Wagners „Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ am Staatstheater Nürnberg. Aktuell entsteht mit der Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg eine Gesamtaufnahme der Sinfonien von Antonín Dvořák bei Coviello Classics. Seit Sommer 2010 leitet Marcus Bosch zudem die Opernfestspiele seiner Heimatstadt Heidenheim und deren Festivalorchester Cappella Aquileia. Zu seiner Position als Generalmusikdirektor des Staatstheater Nürnberg wird Marcus Bosch ab dem Wintersemester 2016 eine Professor für Dirigieren an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater in München antreten. Darüber hinaus wurde Marcus Bosch von der Südwestdeutschen Kammerphilharmonie Konstanz zum ersten Gastdirigenten ernannt.

He is a regular guest at the Hamburg State Opera, where he has directed “The Abduction from the Seraglio,” “The Marksman,” “Falstaff” and “Macbeth,” among other things, since his 2005 debut with “Fidelio.” Most recently, his production of York Höller’s “The Master and Margarita” to open the 2013/2014 season was a great success. His many world premieres, engagements at the Munich Biennale and the Händel Prize from the City of Halle all speak to the director’s broad range of stylistic skills. In particular, his focus on historical staging practices – according to the critics – often places his interpretations of works by Brahms, Wagner and Bruckner in a new light. In recent years, he has compiled an extensive discography that includes internationally acclaimed complete recordings of symphonies by Johannes Brahms and Anton Bruckner, as well as the recent DVD recording of Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” at the Staatstheater Nürnberg. He is currently working on a complete recording of the symphonies of Antonín Dvořák with the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg, to be released by Coviello Classics. Since the summer of 2010, Marcus Bosch has also directed the Opera Festival in his hometown of Heidenheim, along with the festival orchestra, Cappella Aquileia. In addition to his position as the General Music Director of Staatstheater Nürnberg, Marcus Bosch will take up a professorship for conducting at Hochschule für Musik und Theater München in autuum 2016. Furthermore, he has been appointed first guest conductor by the Südwestdeutsche Kammerphilharmonie Konstanz.

STAATSPHILHARMONIE NÜRNBERG

Die Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg ist das große Orchester der Metropolregion Nürnberg und das zweitgrößte Opern- und Konzertorchester in Bayern.

Neben circa 150 Opern- und Ballettvorstellungen im Opernhaus des Staatstheaters Nürnberg bestreitet sie jährlich acht Philharmonische Konzerte in der Meistersingerhalle, zahlreiche Sonderprojekte und Kinderkonzerte. Seit 1999 gestaltet sie das größte europäische Klassik-Open-Air mit über 70.000 Besuchern. Die Geschichte des Orchesters reicht zurück bis zu der seit 1377 nachweisbaren Reichsstädtischen Ratsmusik Nürnbergs. In der Barockzeit zählte Nürnberg zu den Zentren der deutschen Oper, ab 1801 wurden die Nürnberger Stadtmusiker kontinuierlich zu den Aufführungen des neuen „Nürnberger Nationaltheaters“ herangezogen. Nachdem 1905 der Neubau des Opernhauses eröffnet worden war, legte man 1922 das Stadttheaterorchester mit dem von einem privaten Verein getragenen „Philharmonischen Orchester“ zusammen. Als Generalmusikdirektoren prägten zuletzt Hans Gierster, Christian Thielemann, Eberhard Kloke, Philippe Auguin und Christof Prick die damaligen Nürnberger Philharmoniker. Gastspielreisen führten das Orchester u.a. nach Salzburg, Nizza, New York und zum Hongkong Arts Festival. Zu den großen internationalen Ereignissen gehörte insbesondere die erste Aufführung der Operntetralogie „Der Ring des Nibelungen“ in der Volksrepublik China.

Mit dem Amtsantritt von GMD Marcus Bosch im Herbst 2011 wurde das Orchester auf 91 Planstellen vergrößert und der Name Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg verliehen. Mit zahlreichen neuen Konzertformaten und Veranstaltungen an außergewöhnlichen Orten gelingt es Marcus Bosch mit dem Orchester neue Publikumsschichten anzusprechen. Seine Eröffnungsproduktion von Richard Wagners „Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ ist als DVD erschienen.

Der Bayerische Rundfunk und Deutschlandradio Kultur übertragen als Medienpartner wichtige Konzerte und Opernaufführungen der Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg.

Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg ist the largest orchestra in the Nuremberg metropolitan area, and the second-largest opera and concert orchestra in Bavaria. Every year, in addition to about 150 opera and ballet performances in the opera house at Staatstheater Nürnberg, it puts on eight philharmonic concerts in the Meistersingerhalle, numerous special projects and children’s concerts. Since 1999, it has organized Europe’s largest classical openair festival, with more than 70,000 attendees.

The orchestra’s history goes back to Nuremberg’s “Reichsstädtische Ratsmusik,” whose existence was documented as early as 1377. During the Baroque era, Nuremberg was one of the centers of German opera; starting in 1801, Nuremberg’s city musicians were regularly used in productions by the “Nürnberger Nationaltheater.” After the new opera building opened in 1905, the city theater orchestra was combined with the “Philharmonic Orchestra,” supported by a private association, in 1922. The most recent General Music Directors to shape the Nuremberg Philharmonic were Hans Gierster, Christian Thielemann, Eberhard Kloke, Philippe Auguin and Christof Prick. Guest engagements have taken the orchestra to Salzburg, Nice, New York and the Hong Kong Arts Festival, among other places. In particular, major international events have included the first performance of the opera trilogy “The Ring of the Nibelung” in the People’s Republic of China.

When GMD Marcus Bosch joined the organization in the fall of 2011, the orchestra was increased to 91 permanent positions and renamed “Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg.” With many new concert formats and events in unusual places, Marcus Bosch and the orchestra have been able to reach new audiences.

His opening production of Richard Wagner’s “The Master-Singers of Nuremberg” has been released on DVD. Media partners Bayerische Rundfunk and Deutschlandradio Kultur air the major concerts and opera performances of Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg.

Dirk Kruse wurde am Dreikönigstag 1964 in Geesthacht an der Elbe geboren und wuchs in Schleswig-Holstein auf. In Hamburg absolvierte er eine Krankenpflegeausbildung. 1987 zog er nach Franken und studierte an der Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg Politikwissenschaft, Theaterwissenschaft und Germanistik. Seit 1995 arbeitet er hauptberuflich als Journalist im Studio Franken des Bayerischen Rundfunks u.a. als Literatur-, Theater- und Musikkritiker, Moderator bei BR Klassik, Nachrichtenreporter, Themenplaner und Feature-Autor. Er arbeitet auch als freier Rezitator, Sprecher und Moderator außerhalb des BR, regelmäßig etwa fürs Erlanger Poetenfest, das Fürther Literaturfestival LESEN und das von ihm gegründete Fränkische Krimifestival in Weißenburg, dessen Künstlerischer Leiter er ist. Außerdem bildet Kruse als Dozent für Literaturgeschichte und Literaturkritik angehende Kulturjournalisten an der Hochschule Ansbach aus. In den vergangenen Jahren trat er immer mehr als Schriftsteller öffentlich in Erscheinung. Am populärsten sind seine Kriminalromane „Tod im Augustinerhof“, „Requiem“ und „Tod im Botanischen Garten“ um den Gentleman-Detektiv Frank Beaufort, die im Ars Vivendi Verlag und im Piper Verlag erscheinen. Überdies schreibt er Essays, Erzählungen, Feuilletons und Kritiken und ist als Herausgeber tätig. Musikalisch schlägt sein Herz für Jazz und Klassik, besonders für die Oper und Alte Musik.

Dirk Kruse was born on Epiphany in 1964, in Geesthacht an der Elbe, and grew up in Schleswig-Holstein.

He completed nursing training in Hamburg. In 1987, he moved to Franconia and studied Political Science, Theater and German Literature at Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg. Since 1995, he has worked full-time as a journalist in Bayerische Rundfunk’s Studio Franken, among other things as a literature, theater and music critic, a host on BR Klassik, a news reporter, editorial planner and features author. He also works outside BR as a freelance narrator, speaker and facilitator, with regular duties at the Erlanger Poetenfest, the LESEN literature festival in Fürth, and the Franconian Krimifestival in Weißenburg, which he founded and for which he is the artistic director. In addition, Kruse works as a lecturer in literary history and literary criticism, educating future cultural journalists at Hochschule Ansbach. In recent years, he has become more and more active as an author. His most popular works are his detective novels “Tod im Augustinerhof,” “Requiem” and “Tod im Botanischen Garten,” featuring gentleman detective Frank Beaufort, which have been published by Ars Vivendi Verlag and Piper Verlag. He also writes essays, short stories, feature articles and reviews, and works as a publisher. Musically speaking, his heart belongs to jazz and classical music, especially opera and early music.
