LIBERATING EDUCATION

Science Science in 2020 was unlike any other year at St Joseph’s College. Excursions and incursions were cancelled and a lot of the learning was done remotely. Through the hard work of teachers a lot of experiments continued. Staff came in and filmed experiments and sent them to students. Some experiments were also adapted so that students could complete them at home. Once we were back on site, a lot of experiments were conducted in the labs. Students were decked out in safety gear including aprons, glasses, gloves and masks. Through it all, there was a lot of learning and fun to be had. Science Week 2020 National Science Week is Australia’s biggest week celebrating science and technology. The theme in 2020 was ‘Deep Blue: innovations for the future of our oceans and St Joseph’s College celebrated in Week 7 of Term 3. The boys participated in a variety of remote activities, including a virtual Escape Room. First place went to Malik Davis from 7H and second place to Oscar Hart from 8C. Well done to all students who participated. Philippa Barber, Science Curriculum Area Leader YEAR 7 SCIENCE What I like and enjoyed about science this year: I have learnt a lot about how to work things. One of my favourite things was the Rube Goldberg machine. It was so much fun and I had a lot of fun making it. Another one of my favourite things was using the Bunsen burner at the start of the year. Even though most of this year was at home it was very fun and my teacher did a great job of teaching us this year. Cameron Blackley, 7G

What I enjoyed about science this year were the experiments. One of the experiments was the Rube Goldberg machine. Even though it was completed at home it was super fun to do and make. Another thing I loved was trying out the Bunsen burners. Mrs. Barber taught us how to use the Bunsen burner step-by-step and after doing it I was very happy. Otis Jones, 7C YEAR 8 SCIENCE Year 8 science was a great subject this year, it was very social and great to interact with other students. We did many great pracs this year. It was a challenge for everyone when COVID hit and we had school at home. Science was one of the best subjects to do at home. We were given clear instructions that were easy to follow. We did many things on stile and learnt lots of new things. We did a great project in isolation on the many systems of the human body. Coming back to school was great it was very interactive and we did a prac almost every lesson. Overall Year 8 Science was great, we learnt lots of new and interesting things and did many great pracs this year. Jude Coverdale, 8K YEAR 10 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ECOLOGY PROJECT In Semester 2, Year 10 Environmental Science students have undertaken the ecology research project; “What’s In Your Backyard”. With the intention of encouraging students to learn more about the natural world, students investigated the species living in their local vicinity. In addition, they conducted research for a nominated indigenous flora species planted at SJC and discovered uses of native flora species by the Wadawurrung people. The unit culminated with a “Sir David Attenborough inspired” mini documentary on a species of their choice. Kelly Jenkins, Sustainability Coordinator
