LIBERATING EDUCATION

Careers This year was certainly a little different in Careers. 20 Students were able to attend the Defence Careers Expo at the beginning of the year before schools moved to remote learning. This excursion gave the students the opportunity to talk to serving members of the Australian Defence Forces about the career opportunities on offer as well as see equipment and vehicles up close. Further Careers excursions may have been cancelled, however, thankfully work experience was still able to go ahead, all be it with further restrictions. This year’s Careers contribution to Virtus features interviews conducted with students during their work experience placements. During Covid, a number of students were fortunate to have been given the chance to undertake placement. The College thanks the employers and businesses that welcomed our students on placement and ensured they were able to gain such valuable experience. Karen Shum, Careers Coordinator Workplace: Port Phillip Sea Pilots How are you finding your work experience placement and what have you been doing? Work experience has been great. I’ve been able to do a lot of things. I’ve been busy cleaning boats, including the wheelhouse, and sanding and repainting the external surfaces of the boats. I’ve also had the chance to do engineering checks including looking for oil leaks, making sure the controls are working and cleaning the bilges. I also assisted with sea trials of the boat and did deck hand work.

Employer: Luke Trevaskis Builders How are you finding your work experience placement and what have you been doing? I’ve enjoyed being on work experience to be able to get hands on experience. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve had to do. I have assisted with the installation of insulation, mixing cement, pressure washing surfaces and screwing wood facing onto framework. Harry Salmon Employer: Plan Group How are you finding your work experience placement and what have you been doing? Work experience has been great. The people on site have been welcoming and have given me the chance to be involved in different things. I have been working on the Geelong West Football club building works. I’ve had the chance to work with a carpenter, and then a bricklayer. I preferred bricklaying where I was able to do more hands-on work. This is a career I will now consider. Tom Richmund

What have you liked the most? Doing sea trials. Finn Zanoni Employer: Tom Arnold – TA Tiling How are you finding your work experience placement and what have you been doing? I’m really enjoying my work experience and hoping to be signed up in a full-time apprenticeship at the end of this year. I really enjoy learning new skills and getting the job done. I have been learning how to measure the layout of the tiles correctly. I’ve also learnt how to cut tiles and am now able to do grouting myself. What have you liked the most? Being able to attend work experience every Friday as well as learning new things, seeing a job done and getting paid to learn. Josh Howells Connor Senftleben at the Defence Expo
