VCAL Food and Events
Business
In Term 3, a group of 6 of VCAL students ran the VCAL Casserole Kitchen. This group task involved us working together to supply community programs that help people in need with food. We worked with the SJC Care group to help families within our community that might be struggling to get food on the table. We made meals of pasta, lasagne and potato bake. We worked alongside Adele Watt to get this food to the families in need. We also provided Mrs Irving with snacks like varying slices, biscuits and sandwiches for the outreach soup van.
The Year 12 VCAL program was impacted significantly, as it is difficult to complete applied subjects remotely, however considering the interruptions that occurred we were still able to complete a range of applied learning opportunities throughout the year. One of our more hands on subjects that was affected was Food and Events. Food and Events was integrated with our Business VET course, where we have to learn how to manage and run a business.
We had the opportunity to go out and get hands on experience at the Lazarus Community Centre. We made potato salad, a tossed salad and cooked them a barbeque. This was an amazing experience for the boys because it allowed us to go out and see first-hand who we are helping and we were able to talk to the people that are affected and hear about their stories. This project allowed us to learn to communicate effectively and coordinate a group project on our own. It was a memorable experience that both met our outcomes for school and made a difference in the community.
This was also one of our hands on subjects as we had the opportunity to actually run and look after the coffee machine that we turned into a café, which is called SJC Café now. When we worked on the café, we had the opportunity to learn how to make a coffee, how to manage the profits of the business and see how a small business worked. Along with running the café, we had the opportunity do some business units, which looked and covered most things that you would have to do with running your own business. I was very grateful for this opportunity at St Joseph’s College. Zachary Loveday
Elijah Muraca Corryong – Bushfire Relief Camp During Term 1, the Year 11 VCAL students travelled up to Corryong to help out farmers who was affected in the deadly bushfires. We left St Joseph’s College in three mini buses and embarked on the 6 hour journey to the middle of Victoria. We were assigned groups to work in to try and help out on properties that were affected get back up on their feet and try to get them back to as close to normal life as possible. The tasks that we helped them out with included: fixing fences, cleaning up their property and just general maintenance. They were very grateful for what we did to help them. We worked for two full days on these farms and it was a really rewarding experience. On the last night we cooked a BBQ to thank the farmers for allowing us to come and help out on their properties. It was great to be able to engage with the Corryong community and provide support after this devastating event. Bayden Slater
