ST ANDREWS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE EXCELS ACADEMICALLY Better Education (http://bettereducation.com.au) ranks schools in Australia and lists St Andrews Christian College as the 3rd top Melbourne school (for academic performance based on English and Maths Test results), for Primary in both Government and Non-Government schools. In the rankings for the top High School in academic performance we are listed 8th in Victoria amongst NonGovernment Schools and 12th for all schools. The Herald Sun (March 15th) reported that St Andrews Christian College (Year 9) came 3rd in the State for Spelling. We celebrate these results and praise God for our wonderful staff here at St Andrews. As a Christian School we desire to live for Christ in everything we do. We want every student to know Him, to know their purpose in this world and to go out and make a difference in the world for Christ. This is our focus at St Andrews. As a Christian School we are not a witness if we don’t do schooling well and we need to excel in Christ in every facet of the College. Our teaching and learning programs must mirror this and not only incorporate rigorous academic programs for our students to do well in VCE, but they also need to guide our students to think, understand, respond and grow. Not just academic growth, but spiritual, emotional, physical, creative and social growth and development. We are training the whole child.
Growth is the important measure that the College and parents should consider when assessing our children’s educational progress and outcomes. Where your child sits on a comparative scale should not be the focus. What we need to study and question as both educators and parents is “Are the results for the individual child improving?” When NAPLAN (National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy) was introduced nationally for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, its purpose was for parents and schools to understand how children across the whole country are progressing in their academic studies in literacy and numeracy. It was never intended to be used as a tool to compare and rate schools – which unfortunately it is. However, we all know there is more to education than just good literacy and numeracy outcomes. It is important for parents not to just look at the mark achieved in NAPLAN or to compare them with other students, but to carefully examine their child’s growth and improvement in their individual results. That is, how much their child has improved from one NAPLAN test (2 years prior) to their current result. One of our staff members, Mrs Chantel Rodger was given the task to study the NAPLAN results of two very different cohorts of Year 7 and Year 9 students and trace their individual progress over 3 years at St Andrews Christian College. Her study has concluded that our students are improving at a high rate and the longer they study at St Andrews Christian College the more their results improve. HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY
What a wonderful year we are having at St Andrews Christian College celebrating God and His goodness. As we are continually growing in our understanding and faith of how to “Rejoice in the Lord, always” (Philippians 4:4) we need to express our thankfulness to God for all He has done in our lives at St Andrews.
Special blessings to all our Mums for Mothers’ Day on Sunday. Know you are loved, cherished and greatly appreciated.
One way we are doing this is in a whole college event, “Celebrating God, Celebrating 30 years at St Andrews Christian College” on Saturday 31st August. The celebrations will commence at 5:30pm, with a visual and performing arts exhibition in Rembrandts and then lead onto a concert in the Multi-Purpose Hall which will begin at 7:00pm. A full program which will highlight the many exciting activities and barbecue dinner will be forwarded to you later in the year. What is important for you to know, (and we need you all to spread the news), that we are having a community choir perform at the Celebrations. The choir will lead everyone in a few songs but will also perform Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus”. Students, staff, parents and anyone in the community who wishes to join are invited. Anyone interested in joining us to praise God and sing the ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ is welcome, but you must Register with Mrs Tamie Dekker and attend at least 5 rehearsals to be part of the choir. Details of the rehearsals/registration are in this newsletter and on our website.
A MOTHERS’ DAY PRAYER Heavenly Father, to you I pray on this day called, "Mothers’ Day." Let all mothers on earth give praise, To you...for the children that you gave. For you have blessed them from above, with little souls to nourish and love. Let them mould each one with care and teach them to be kind and share. Forgiveness is the special key, start early on, to help them see. Their fragile minds are easily impressed. Please teach them ways, so they'll be blessed.

I emailed some important information about our excellent academic results to parents last month, but also include it in this week’s newsletter for your interest.

NAPLAN EXCELLENCE ST ANDREWS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE EXCELS IN NAPLAN - Summary Report by Chantel rodger In analysing our NAPLAN data over a three year period, we have concluded that the longer a student studies at St Andrews Christian College, the more their individual results improve. We have analysed the NAPLAN results of our Year 9 students from 2011 and 2012. NAPLAN allows a student or year level comparison over two NAPLAN tests. These results have been taken from the NAPLAN website: https://naplands.vcaa.vic.edu.au . St Andrews Christian College is required to take part in an annual, National Assessment Program (NAPLAN) that tests the areas of Literacy and Numeracy. This test is administered in all schools across Australia. The assessment program tests students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, in the five key domains of Reading, Writing, Spelling (grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. Results are then recorded in bands indicating whether a student is below, at or above the school, state or national level in each domain tested. Schools are then ranked and this information is made readily available to the public. Bands are from 1 to 10 – indicating at a below national minimum standard, at a national minimum standard or an above national minimum standard for each year level. At each year level, bands are represented as follows:
Year 3 – band 1 is below, band 2 is at, bands 3-6 are above. Year 5 – band 3 is below, band 4 is at, bands 5-8 are above. Year 7 – band 4 is below, band 5 is at, bands 6-9 are above. Year 9 – band 5 is below, band 6 is at, bands 7-10 are above.
Students from St Andrews Christian College, who took the tests in both Year 7 (in 2010) and Year 9 (in 2012), showed they maintained or improved their results over the three years. The same was for the previous group of Year 9 students who took the tests in both Year 7 (in 2009) and Year 9 (in 2011). As a group, the Year 9 students showed a majority of medium or high growth in all domains tested over the two years of testing.

NAPLAN EXCELLENCE Analysing the results of a student who had only been here since the beginning of Year 9, the graph indicates that they achieved the national standard in Reading and Writing and below the national standard in Spelling, Grammar and Numeracy in Year 7 (while not at St Andrews) and then achieved the national standard in Writing, Grammar and Numeracy, and above in Reading and Spelling in Year 9 (as a student from St Andrews). COMPARISON REPORT FROM YEAR 7 TO YEAR 9 FOR A STUDENT NOT AT ST ANDREWS IN YEAR 7, BUT NEW TO ST ANDREWS IN YEAR 9:
By studying two different cohorts of Year 9 students from St Andrews Christian College, (both different academically) we are able to conclude that every student significantly improved academically over their time at St Andrews Christian College. Results also lead us to the conclusion that the longer our students study at St Andrews Christian College, the more likely their academic growth is to be more profound and of a high standard.

Annual General Meeting Notice for the Annual General Meeting, to be held on Thursday 23rd May 2013, at 7.30pm in the Rembrandts Hall. Prayer Group The St Andrews Prayer Group invites all parents to come along and join in prayer, with other parents, for the needs of the St Andrews school community. Meetings are held once a week on: Fridays 8:45am (after school drop off) Prayer will be held in the Meeting room next to the Reception area. It is a great opportunity to join in fellowship with other parents.
Barton ‘Crazy Hat Day’ On the 28th of March 2013, Barton Community held a `Crazy Hat Day’ at school to raise funds for the Tata School in Vanuatu. Students were encouraged to bring an interesting and creative hat, and donate a gold coin. The enthusiasm of the students was evident in the many fascinating, even whacky designed hats observed during the day. Other special lunchtime activities included a cake stall, X-Box dancing competition, two jumping castles, and a guessing competition to calculate the correct number of pieces of Lego in a jar. Students had a fun time. Some staff and students even demonstrated some cool dance moves. In total, approximately $900 was raised. This was a fantastic result and the Barton Community Captains, SSC Committee and various volunteers involved are to be congratulated for all their hard work in making `Crazy Hat Day’ such a great success. PARENTS AND FRIENDS ASSOCIATION St Andrews Run 4 Your Gym The Run 4 Your Gym 2013 went really well with fantastic results and lots of fun. Just over $10,200 was raised for the MPH audio-visual equipment and staging. The Lord blessed us with perfect weather conditions, cloudy, with a gentle breeze. A sea of approximately 500 St Andrews students, teachers and parents walked, jogged and ran around the lake. A total distance of 1,734km was covered by the school! The highlight of the day, I believe for most of the students, was the Slime/Sponge-ATeacher, with Mrs Wansbrough leading the way exercising her 2 slimes on Mr Wade! Well done to all the students and thank you to all the parents who assisted on the day. You helped make the day run so well. Icy Pole Coordinator Required The PFA require a parent to take up the role of coordinating Icy Pole Fridays. After a number of years, May Anderson is stepping aside at the end of this Term. The role involves organising a roster of helpers and the ordering/stock management of the icy poles. Cyber-Safety Presentation Thanks to Mr Paul Weldon, who gave a short presentation on Cyber– Safety at the PFA meeting last week. Paul presented a student survey he had done through Independent Schools Victoria and discussed some of the issues facing parents in this ever changing world of technology. The consensus at the meeting was that clear boundaries and rules need to be set by parents and if we can ground our children in good Christian/moral values then they will be able to deal with potential cyber threats better and develop good habits in using online technology.

Woolworths Earn and Learn Don’t forget to collect your stickers each time you shop at Woolworths. These can be placed in the collection box located in the school office. Last year the stickers transpired into 9 boxes of teaching resources which will be going to the Tata school in Vanuatu.
‘Dark Side’ DVD The parenting library is missing a DVD by Brad Huddleston entitled ‘The Dark Side of Technology’. This was borrowed last year but not written on the borrowing sheet. Could parents please check if they have this copy at home and return it to the office asap. The parenting library is located in the school office. Parents can borrow up to 2 books at a time for a period of 2 weeks. We appreciate your prompt return of the books.

My Mum keeps everything I ever made at school. She has the cookie cutter I made in Metal Work in Year 8, the model of a farm from year 6, the poems project from Year 11 English, even the plaster cast of my sneaker from Year 9 Art! As the students begin to talk about their mums and create little cards and gifts this week in anticipation of Sunday, it is a joy to hear their expressions of love. The students, just like my Mum, keep everything you do. They talk about your food, your cuddles, your holidays, your happy days and your sad days. They store them up and keep them faithfully so they can remember your love. As you celebrate Mothers’ Day with your families this Sunday remember that all that you do is stored and kept by your children. In the same way God keeps us and watches us; what a blessing to know His constant, unchanging love. “May the Lord lead your hearts into a full understanding and expression of the love of God” 2 Thessalonians 3:5. Happy Mothers Day to all the Mums!
In any School, it is important to ensure that the needs of young adolescents are being met through the programs and activities that are offered. Middle School students are curious about the world around them and will continue to seek an understanding of their place in this world. These young adolescents need to be encouraged to develop their creativity and to discover the responsibilities that are linked to decision making.

Year 3 Exposition Writing The Year 3s have been learning about exposition text type this term. Here is a couple of exposition writings they have done.

It is cruel to keep animals in cages. Do you agree? I believe that it is cruel to keep animals in captivity. Firstly, keeping animals in cages is cruel because it is taking animals away from their parents. Imagine if a baby elephant was taken away from their parents! How would you feel if you were separated from your parents? Secondly, if animals are born in captivity, they will have to stay in captivity because they will not have any hunting skills which help them survive. Finally, keeping animals in captivity is like a prison. However, animals are innocent and it is unfair to keep them in captivity.

Eating too much junk food is bad for you. Do you agree? I believe that eating too much junk food is bad for you. Firstly, I believe that eating too much junk food is bad for you because it contains lots of fat, oil, sugar and salt. If you eat too much of those, you will get fat. Secondly, you can get sick by eating too much junk food. For example, our teeth can get tooth decay and cavities. Finally, the Bible says that our body is God’s temple and we should look after our body by eating healthy food. Also, we can get better from sickness faster if we eat healthily.

I have been excited about the response of two Middle School students, Rachael Song and Emilie Hughes (5H). After attending the National Young Leaders Day earlier in the year, these girls wanted to make a difference in the College. They have been behind the current Colouring Competition and Room Design Fundraiser. They have thought through how to organise and run this activity and have worked at overcoming challenges that they have encountered along the way. The funds raised will go towards enhancing the toilet facilities for all the students in the College. Thank you to all those who have submitted entries so far; they display a high level of creativity and effort. It is not too late to get your entry form from the School Office as this competition runs until the 23rd of May. Even if you don’t want to submit an entry, any donation will be graciously accepted. Chess Success On Tuesday this week, our Primary Girls Chess Team participated in the Lauriston Cup Competition. All our girls performed extremely well with most completing the day with 6 or 7 wins out of 7 games played. CYBER-SAFETY
Senior School On Friday the 3rd of May, the Years 10-12 students, went to The Age VCE and Careers Expo at Caulfield Racecourse. It was a very enlightening and informative day which gave information about VCE, exams, university and life after school. There was something for everyone, and it was all very beneficial. There were practice exams, seminars that explained about the coming years and exams, study tips and how to get through Year 12 without stressing out too much. There were study guides and booklets for sale, and most universities in Victoria had a stall there as well as many other universities from all over Australia. Altogether the day was very helpful and well worth it! Cat Anderson and Rach Gvalda (Year 11 students)
“If you go to ‘The BBQ Shack’ you will always come back!” Half the Year 11 Business Management Class students ran their micro business “The BBQ Shack” over the last two weeks. Calculating the demand for “Sausage and Bread”, getting 100s of meat patties ready for cooking, making sure all the pre-orders were delivered on time to the Preps, Year 1s and Year 2s, offering the best “Customer Service” as quick as possible or just doing some good old Quality Control Management on the “Deluxe Burgers” (Yum!) – have been just some of the challenges that have been faced.
This business activity was successful in raising a profit of over a thousand dollars! The funds raised will be used to buy much needed resources for our sister school ‘Tata School’ in Vanuatu. However, this would not have been possible without the generous support of Fane Fricker, Cara Beovich, a small army of student volunteers and the St Andrews Christian College Community.
