From the President Don’t you love it when you are seated at your favorite restaurant and the waiter asks what you would like? That question is always a pleasure to ponder. I get a similar feeling when someone asks me what is so special about St. X. When I experience the menu of what we serve at St. X, I recognize that our faculty and staff are five stars. More than 230 faculty members and staff are all highly trained and dedicated. Do you know that 92% of our faculty have advanced degrees? Or that the average tenure of faculty and staff is 10.25 years, with a range from 1 year to 57 (Karl Hauck has worked here since August of 1962!). In last year’s (and I understand it is true every year) senior exit interviews, just about everyone reported that they have built a meaningful relationship with someone who works here. So along with the instruction and transfer of knowledge and thinking skills, it’s the connections between the employees and the students that are special. Our top-rated offerings — 200 courses, 27 AP courses in 7 subject areas, 82 clubs and 17 Division One sports teams with 68 State Championships (tops in Ohio) — are robust and without a close second in both curricular and extracurricular programs. And even more appealing, the menu is always being updated. For example, the 2020-21 school year will be adding a second level of our popular entrepreneurship class. Another example of the evolution in programing is the addition of adventure retreats. The combination of teenage boy with adventures like sailing, backpacking, and fishing, mix perfectly with scripture, reflection, and prayer. The opportunity to engage a wide range of talents and interests makes this place special. Like a fine dining establishment, the facilities here are clearly designed to open the doors for the students to discover and develop their individual gifts. Visitors often remark that it feels like a small college more than a high school. That is what happens when you have so much alumni and friend support combined with great board members and strong leaders over the years. Reinvesting in our facilities is an area that is driving our next

Tim Reilly ’76

Like a fine dining establishment, the facilities here are clearly designed to open the doors for the students to discover and develop their individual gifts. facility plan. For example, after 50 years, the Keating Natatorium is still at the top of the list of fast pools in our area. To keep it competitive for the next 25 years, plans are currently being developed to update it. We also have to appreciate how Tom Mills, Director of Facilities, and his teams maintain the campus. The Long and Wide Blue Line is beyond compare. Almost 20,000 living alumni and countless other supporters and friends of St. X have enjoyed their experience and spread the word. Whether as a student, teacher, administrator, or family member, my experience with St. X has always been an influential part of my life. My appreciation is amplified by seeing the results of the connection between the Long and Wide Blue Line with the current Bombers. That support is tops in the Jesuit network and in the country: 42% of alumni made a contribution in the past year. With 438 named scholarships, 10,863 contributions to the annual fund and the thousands of volunteers and alumni that make this place run smoothly each day. Thank you for helping us pay for the meal we offer our students. What St. X has been serving since 1831 is taken from our Jesuit Catholic heritage and is rooted in top-notch ingredients. The secret is the combination of students who are not only hungry to develop their talents but are also eager to go out into the world to serve others. My Best,

Canned Food Drive 2

For 91 years St. Xavier students have provided for the hungry of the Cincinnati community. Freshman and sophomores focused on collecting over 64,000 pounds of food that was immediately distributed to over 30 local food pantries. Juniors and seniors focused on collecting non-perishable food, paper items and blankets for the HEART to HOME Program. This program allows the students to partner with individuals and families and encourages them to meet the recipients to gain compassion and become Men for Others. St. X parents, faculty, staff and friends were encouraged to help the student efforts in providing food and essentials for the holidays. This effort is the central community service activity with over 90% of the student population taking part.

St. X Students Fight Against Stigma With the Bring Change to Mind Initiative The students of the Bring Change to Mind club shared the first of many projects to come at St. X. They built an installation with the goal of spreading knowledge about mental health and of course, ending the stigma to an all-boys school. Additionally, there is a clothesline with motivational/inspirational message on sticky notes that students can take if they need or leave one for other students. This has allowed great opportunity to spread positivity around the school as well.

Annual Retired Faculty and Staff Dinner Retired faculty and staff members were honored with a dinner on September 19, 2019 in the Reynolds Room. The reception is an annual event to catch up with those who have helped nurture members of the Long Blue Line.

Feast of St. Francis Xavier The St. Xavier community gathered to celebrate the annual Feast of St. Francis Xavier Mass on December 5. Fr. Eric Sundrup, pastor of Bellermine Chapel, was the celebrant for this Mass to honor the school’s namesake.

TX Delivered an Emotional Performance TX’s fall production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time told the story of a gifted boy named Christopher John Francis Boone. He knows every prime number up to 7,057, relates well to animals, has no understanding of human emotions, cannot stand to be touched, and detests the color yellow. After his neighbor’s dog is killed he sets out on an adventure to discover the identity of the murderer. Along the way, he discovers unexpected truths about the world, his family, but, most importantly, about himself. The students used intricate choreography of movement, lighting and sound to offer a window into the experience of the gifted protagonist. They delivered moving and skilled performances of the compelling tale.

Cincinnati Dragons Senior Gabe Puthoff plays basketball for the Cincinnati Dragons and realized a dream to play basketball on his home court at St. Xavier. On October 19-20. St. X hosted a wheelchair basketball tournament for the Cincinnati Dragons in both gyms. This tournament usually takes place at Eastern Kentucky University but they have been trying for years to host a “home tournament” in Cincinnati. Fortunately, St. X was able to make this happen! Gabe’s team won the tournament. Congratulations to the Champion Cincinnati Dragons.

Mothers’ Club Christmas Celebration Gives Back

Thank you to the Mothers’ Club for hosting another successful Christmas Celebration! More than 100 volunteers worked tirelessly to make sure 650+ guests had a memorable experience. Thank you to all who volunteered, attended and purchased items to support St. Xavier. Thank you also to the pictured students who volunteered on their day off to make the event a success!

Nature Trail In October, the Environmental Action Club met for the kick off of our forest management project. Under the guidance of Greg Torres, horticulturist at the Civic Garden Center, students prepared soil flats with native tree seeds that were collected from local forests. Next, they set the trays up in a protected area outside at the entrance to the campus nature trail, where they will remain through the winter to undergo stratification. Next fall, these seedlings will be used to replace invasive species such as honeysuckle that they will be removing from the campus forest. This is part of a long-range project that aims to boost the biodiversity of our campus forest and promote positive community engagement with the natural world.

St. Xavier Welcomed Civil Rights Activist Betty Rosemond “This is a woman full of unbounded courage” Literature teacher, Julie Brandel said of Betty Rosemond. “She is one of my newest heroes. My co-teacher and I had the absolute pleasure of bringing our seniors to hear Betty Rosemond, one of the original freedom riders in the Civil Rights Movement, share her experience with nonviolent resistance. We witnessed history. I’m so moved. Her message prompts us to live with courage and agency; ‘If we want a change in the world, we have to be the change.’” Mrs. Brandel, in partnership with Wayne Miller, Director of Diversity, and Jim Schurrer, teacher and Dean of Faculty, invited Ms. Betty Rosemond to speak to the combined Other Voices of American Literature classes at St. Xavier High School on September 26. Ms. Rosemond was a Freedom Rider and shared her riveting experiences as she and others advocated for Civil Rights in America in the 1960’s. Mr. Miller, Director of Diversity said, “We were so honored to have Ms. Betty Rosemond speak to our students about her role as a Freedom Rider and her specific encounters during the Civil Rights Era. To have someone

8

St. Xavier High School Magazine Winter 2020

who actually lived the history about which they were reading left an indelible impression upon them and our entire school.” When legislation passed in the 1960’s to allow all Americans to ride the public bus without segregation, the Freedom Riders, like Ms. Rosemond, risked personal injury and rode the bus in support of the law and to test if the citizens of some regions in the South would uphold the law. Violence and taunting often met the Freedom Riders but they persevered. “It was a blessing and honor hear Ms. Rosemond’s story of faith and determination regarding the Civil Rights era. If The Freedom Riders were to happen all over again I would love to be right by her side the whole way. That is how much she inspired me and I’m sure my classmates,” said student Kazir Wilson. Ms. Rosemond’s experience is relevant to St. Xavier students today as they live and learn within a diverse student body and strive to become Men for Others.

Vice President’s Message Tony Schad ’81

The “Madness” is upon us! No, I am not talking about the tournament, although I really do love this time of year with regard to basketball. The “Madness” of which I speak is X-Travaganza at St. Xavier High School. A year’s worth of hard work and dedication is about to come to fruition on March 7th for hundreds of volunteers and employees. Why does X-travaganza happen? I can recall hearing her say these very words, “It’s all for the boys.” Those were the words of Margo Locaputo, who directed X-Travaganza for many years. I miss her, especially at this time of year. But rest assured Margo’s spirit not only lives on, it is thriving through the work of people like X-Trav director Cathy Cionni, Heidi O’Connor, Joyce Bowman, Terry Haney as well as hundreds more who volunteer their time and talents to making sure that this event is a success.

X-Travaganza supports tuition assistance for 716 young men through the Grand Raffle and X-Tend-A-Hand on auction night as well as helping to support each and every young man who is enrolled at St. Xavier. This year’s event, which is themed, Off to the TropiX –Hawaii Bound is being co-chaired by Colleen and Adam Ireton ’88 and Lisanne and Mike Thompson ’84. It will be a fantastic evening full of fun and celebration for the St. Xavier community. So many relationships are renewed and built at this event. Opening Party will get things started for this whirlwind weekend on Friday night, March 6th. Everyone is invited to Opening Party as well as all of our incoming freshmen parents. The auction night items are incredible as always and the silent auction on both Friday and Saturday will not disappoint.

10

St. Xavier High School Magazine Winter 2020

But this happens for a reason… it truly is for the students here at St. Xavier. X-Travaganza supports tuition assistance for 716 young men through the Grand Raffle and X-Tend-A-Hand on auction night as well as helping to support each and every young man who is enrolled at St. Xavier. Yes, while being an incredible “friend-raiser” this is a vitally important fundraiser too! St. Xavier High School is an incredible educational, spiritual and formational institution for the young men who walk the hallways. And like almost anything worthwhile, it does not come cheap. Here are the facts: • This year the cost to educate a student in the St. Xavier way is $20,060. • Tuition charged is $15,650 • Our student’s need-based assistance is $4,600,000 to help with tuition to make sure anyone academically qualified can attend. My ask is simple. Purchase some Grand Raffle tickets. Come and enjoy Opening Party on March 6th or Auction Night on March 7th. Or maybe you can come to both nights. You will have a great time and your support on those evenings will benefit each and every student at St. Xavier High School. If you have any questions go to https://www.stxavier.org/support-st-x/x-travaganza or contact the X-Travaganza office at 513-618-3232. I sincerely hope to see you during Off to the TropiX – Hawaii Bound!

New Triathlon Program Wins National Championship In just four short years, the St. Xavier TriBombers went from a vision of a new student club to national champs. The club’s journey has been filled with success and growth thanks to support across the country. In April 2019, St. Xavier’s triathlon team won the USA Triathlon High School National Championship in Tempe, Arizona. The “TriBombers” finished first in the Independent Club (individual high school) category. The team also finished third in the Male Club category, impressive in that St. X competed against regional teams in this category. The club holds the title of Ohio State Champs in their respective category for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons as well. It is a surprise that the team has achieved such a high honor since it really is still in its infancy. Coach Jim Murphy ’92 explained an exploratory meeting was first held in late 2016 when just eight interested students attended. From there, Murphy organized a

committee, where he and the St. X administration worked together to make the program feasible. The TriBombers are a triathlon club that does not compete locally with other schools but supports St. Xavier athletes who participate in publicly held triathlon events. After just a few years, the TriBombers have a great model for high school triathlon clubs which gives nearly 20-30 students the opportunity to participate in this competitive sport. “There are many to thank for the quick rise to success the team has had,” said Murphy. There are many parents, students, alumni and many at St. X that have supported this club since the beginning.” This emerging sport has support from the Long Blue Line all across the country and is always looking for support from fellow Bombers. For more information on the TriBombers triathlon club please visit www.stxavier.org/triathlon.

Career ConneXions Josh Holtman ’20 spent a day shadowing Dr. John R. Corker ’03 this fall as part of St. X’s Career ConneXions program. Dr. Corker is a physician at Emergency Medicine Specialists. “I had a great time and I learned a lot about the medical field,” Josh said. Job-shadowing is just one component of the program, now in its third year. Career ConneXions guides students in their college and career choices. Student interest is growing, especially for summer internships. If you or someone you know is interested in sponsoring an intern or job-shadow in medicine, business, or other fields, visit the program’s web site, www.stxavier.org/academics/careerconnexions.

Matthew DeBrunner ’18 My internship was a big success. It had a large diverse amount of opportunities for me to pursue.

RJ Myers ’20 Through Career ConneXions, I was able to shadow with a surgical oncologist in Northern Kentucky at the St. Elizabeth Health Care Center. I witnessed four surgeries and got to scrub in for two of them. It was a great day and really confirmed my love and passion for medicine. Through the Career ConneXions I was able to see that medicine is the right path for me.

Dawson Adams ’19 Over the summer I was able to intern with a commercial interior design company called Loth. I was tasked with being their first ever marketing intern and I worked with competitive analysis dealing with other companies in the Cincinnati area. I specifically worked on a video campaign to help show their culture. Overall the internship was a great experience and thanks to Career ConneXions it was definitely one I will carry with me into my college years.

Bobby McAlpine ’20 Last summer I interned at a construction and engineering firm called Bansal Construction. I was a project manager. What I gained most of all was not only the experience of being in corporate America, but also seeing the advantage of being a product of St. Xavier High School. The leaders of the company were St. Xavier graduates, Men for Others. The graduates of St. X were leaders in their workplace, they set the tone.

Preserving the Long Blue Line The St. Xavier Archives

In 1962, fresh from a short teaching stint at Roger Bacon High School, Karl Hauck started his almost 40-year career at St. Xavier. After arriving at the recently completed Finneytown campus, Karl formed close relationships with History Department head Father William Garvey, S.J., as well as Brother Freddy Novacek, S.J. In addition to conversing about the school’s history with Karl, the two Jesuits also shared some ephemera and memorabilia from old St. Xavier; from there a seed was planted, and Karl began to develop an official repository for the school’s archival records. Subsequent years saw the collection grow and expand; Karl continued to collect anything and everything for preservation: graduation programs, photographs, construction contracts, newsletters, directories, and copies of publications such as the Blueprint, Xavier Prep, Kampus Kapers, and Alumni Bulletin. The first two decades of Karl’s archival work culminated in the 1982 publication of A Century and A Half: St. Xavier High School, 1831-1981. This book, co-written and researched by Karl and five dedicated students, details the first 150 years of St. Xavier and utilizes many of the records preserved in the archives. Though he officially retired from teaching in 1999, Karl continues to gather, identify, and catalog items related to the school’s history. Recently, an attractive and inviting space was created in the school library that allows for both an archival work area as well as a place for displays and exhibits. Serving as a resource for both St. Xavier and the wider community, the archives responds to inquiries and research requests from teachers, students, and alumni. Long-range projects include the creation of an archival website, classroom integration, alumni oral histories, magazine articles, and preparation for St. Xavier’s bicentennial birthday bash in 2031. Though much work remains to be done, the St. Xavier Archives is on an exciting new path with boundless potential. In a 2013 interview, Karl Hauck expressed his hope that someone would eventually take over the archives. Five years later, that hope was realized when Nick Kemper ’06 began working with the school’s records and laying the foundation for a revitalized collection. Building on his knowledge and passion for history, Nick arranges revolving displays, continues to organize and catalog items, and has begun the arduous process of digitizing records. In the words of Karl Hauck, “The nearly 200-year history of this amazing place is too valuable to lose; St. Xavier is too important to not preserve its history and memories.” The St. Xavier Archives is open during the week from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. For more information, or to schedule a visit, please contact Nick Kemper at nkemper@stxavier.org, or Head Librarian Jennifer Donahue at jdonahue@stxavier.org.

Alumni Reflections John Brennan ’77 Thinking back to my days at St. X High School, probably one of the most impactful individuals on my professional growth was my English teacher, Jim Downie. Mr. Downie’s passion and love for what he taught was not only transparent, but inspirational as well. As he taught, his excitement level for his subject he was teaching was infectious. You could just sense his enthusiasm. He was truly happy and joyful as he taught.

John Brennan Then and Now

Interestingly, it was not until I was well into my career before I recognized a core philosophy that Mr. Downie clearly exemplified. I have come to understand that if you love what you do and are passionate about what you do, then you are not working at a job or a task, but rather, you are living with a sense of purpose. When you are living with a sense of purpose, you are likely to excel at whatever it is that you do. Others around you recognize your passion and zeal and are inspired by you.

Having the perspective of 40 years to look back now on my St. X experience, the concept of Men for Others clearly resonates with me. In my career of commercial real estate investment and development, I have encountered individuals from many walks of life, and, I have encountered individuals with all levels of integrity and success. It is not always easy to operate in a field that can be largely driven by financial success and greed. As Men for Others, we are grounded in the principle of service to others. This principle has allowed me to focus my career and life on what is most important. I am blessed in that I have had the opportunity to work and partner with wonderful individuals with the same perspective. I owe a large debt of gratitude to St. X as I was afforded the opportunity to recognize early in life through my St. X experience just how joyful life can be while living with a strong sense of purpose. This sense of purpose is well grounded in the concept of Men for Others.

Stan Dohan ’88 I am certain I would not be alone saying there are so many teachers that made such a positive impact on my education and life while at St. Xavier High School between 1984 - 1988. Some wonderful teachers that come to mind influenced my enjoyment of writing, which led to a lifetime appreciation of travel, many other cultures and even contributing to various travel blogs, magazines, and writing the mini guides on various regions for popular travel sites. Mr. Marchal, Ms. Creason, and Ms. Mascari leap to mind regarding writing. It gave me a huge jolt of confidence when I was one of four total students to test out of the English Exams my Senior Year. Athletically, I enjoyed all four years on the Tennis Team and owe much to Russ “Tiger” King. Playing Varsity Sports on a winning, high level also instilled a lot of confidence going forward in life. Tiger always knew how to manage us and was a dedicated coach for so many years. While we may have strayed from the strict subject matter, Tom Ballaban’s lessons on life and shared experiences were both entertaining and valuable. As long as you avoided his wrath, classes were always interesting.

Stan Dohan Then and Now

14

St. Xavier High School Magazine Winter 2020

Finally, it would be remiss not to note the MANY longstanding extracurriculars and traditions of St. Xavier High School. Assemblies to Masses to Kairos Retreats to Boys and Girls Clubs and Spirit Days, Walk for X and on and on.

This is also likely an oft-repeated comment, though “Men for Others” embodies the St. Xavier High School core philosophy and instilled in all of us to be unselfish, charitable and philanthropic. At every stage of my Freshman through Senior Years at St. Xavier, we were involved in Community Service and Outreach. Giving back and the Spirit of Volunteerism are parts of life in the Long Blue Line, not just a box to check. “Networking” is a major St. Xavier advantage. St. Xavier as a high school, embodies, rallies around and organizes a more complete alumni network than most colleges. I’ve found that we all “drop what we are doing” and answer the call when it comes our way.

Allen Dohan ’59 I can’t nail down one person that made the most impact on me so I will mention a few. Mr. Berning, my varsity basketball coach, and Father Robinson, my varsity tennis coach, were both influential in instilling a strong desire to compete and to win fairly and honestly which carried over to Xavier University, the military, and into the business world. Although it happened infrequently, teaching us how to lose with dignity and respect was also part of the makeup of these two coaches.

Allen Dohan Then and Now

St. Xavier helped give me a broader outlook on life with a continued desire to learn and explore throughout the world.

Jim Downie

Unlike today, the majority of the faculty were priests and scholastics. These were good men who were there for the students for the Greater Glory of God, both at school on a daily basis and at our annual retreat at the Jesuit retreat house in Milford as well as one retreat at a monastery in Kentucky. During my four years these Jesuits solidified my faith which through all the trauma of recent years, remains solid today. St. Xavier helped give me a broader outlook on life with a continued desire to learn and explore throughout the world. With the solid foundation I received at St X it was an easy transition into college. Most importantly, we are all proud and loyal members of the Long Blue Line with a network of alumni friends both new and old. And finally there are two Cincinnati teams that I get excited about every year and try to make as many games as I can and they are St. X football and XU basketball.

Mr. Marchal

Student Spotlight A.J. Wessel ’20 Senior A.J. Wessel jumped in with both feet from the moment he joined the Long Blue Line. He has been active in community service in Over-TheRhine, led as a Bomber Pilot, and served as a student development chairman, a member of student council, a member of the Career ConneXions steering team and a member of the admissions core team (even starring in an admissions video). A.J. has been a basketball manager, a basketball statistician, a student leadership team member, a participant in the Canned Food Drive, a participant in Phonathon and the Grand Raffle Phonathon. He served others as a peer tutor and a eucharistic minister. A.J. was also a football manger and this year received the prestigious Tim Banker Award. The award is given to a player or manager based on consideration of the quality of Courage and Leadership displayed in the areas of football, scholarship, school activities and spiritual values.

Why did you choose to attend St. X? Is there any family history or other members of the Long Blue Line? I chose to attend St. X because of its academically challenging curriculum and because of the sense of community that I felt during the Open House and during my X-perience day. I wanted to be able to attend a high school that would not only prepare me for my future inside of the classroom, but also my future outside of the classroom. The interaction that I witnessed between the individual student and the school faculty and staff was tremendous. This interaction provided the verification that at St. Xavier High School, each individual student matters. I matter. My classmates matter. Our future matters. I am the first person in my direct family to be a member of the Long Blue Line, so this experience has not only been special for me, for my entire family. How are you different as a senior than you were entering as a freshman? The difference between me as a freshman to where I am now is extensive. As I entered the halls during my first couple of days at orientation, I questioned how I would be able to plant my feet and foster relationships in a school this big. Through my four years, I quickly found ways to plant myself through the various opportunities that St. X has to offer. A school that once seemed large, was now my home. As time rolled by, I found myself involved in many extracurriculars, clubs, and leadership teams. From the beginning of freshman year to senior year, I went from not involved to involved. Through all of these leadership teams, extracurriculars, and clubs, my teachers, administrators, and peers have helped develop me into the young man that I am today. These endless opportunities over my four years are the reasons that I have developed by always being Open to Growth.

What words of wisdom do you have for future members of the Long Blue Line? For future members of the Long Blue Line, I hope that they all engage themselves in a lifestyle that constantly challenges them to be their best all of the time. Being at our best everyday, all day, is nearly impossible, in fact it is impossible, but if we strive to be at our best all of the time, then we will be able to help those around us strive for the same goal of being their best selves. As Men and Women for Others, we truly cannot help others effectively if we have not engaged ourselves in a lifestyle that puts us at our best. St. Xavier High School offers a multitude of opportunities to find who you want to be, so why not make use of those opportunities? I challenge future members of the Long Blue Line to branch outwards and get involved to open their minds to new pathways that might help them in their search towards what allows them to succeed at the peak of their abilities. What are your plans for the future? After graduation, I hope to major in Sports Studies while obtaining all of the necessary prerequisites for medical school. In the future, I hope to become a surgeon. I feel as if this path suits me best because through my time at St. X, my love for continually helping others has been confirmed. Explain the St. Xavier Advantage and what it means to you? The St. Xavier Advantage is hard to put into words. The community is tremendous, the faculty and staff care for the individual student, the opportunities are endless, and the education is rigorous. The overall embodiment of St. Xavier High School and all that it encapsulates is an advantage to itself. St. Xavier High School is able to bring in students as freshmen and within an extremely short four year span, the once freshmen are formed into young men with the drive and the skills needed to succeed. I personally am eternally grateful for the St. Xavier Advantage. I have learned many valuable life lessons that have resulted from experiences inside and outside of the classroom. At St. X, the opportunities offered do not end once we graduate. Our first four years are strictly a mere glimpse of the opportunities that will come from being a member of the Long Blue Line. The St. Xavier Advantage exists during the entire duration of our lives, and for that, I will never be able to repay the debt that I owe to St. Xavier High School. Anything else you would like to add? St. Xavier High School is a great place, it is my second home. Each student is only given four years inside the halls of 600 West North Bend Road, so to all of the current and future members of the Long Blue Line, make the most of your time at St. X. Represent the X proudly!

Faculty Focus Katie Collins

Faculty member Katie Collins teaches in the St. Xavier Religion Department. She grew up in Dayton, the second of five kids, and was blessed with amazing parents. After graduating from Alter, she attended the University of Notre Dame, where she majored in theology. After graduation, Katie spent a year in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps serving in Fairbanks, Alaska. It was during this year that she fell in love with all things Jesuit. She found a home in the beautiful merger of faith, intellect, service, and community that is the Jesuit charism. After marrying her college sweetheart (Tom St. X Class of ’92) and spending a couple years in Europe, they eventually returned to Cincinnati in 2000, where she taught briefly at Summit Country Day and then Mount Notre Dame. Life then blessed Katie and her husband with three awesome kids. Katie chose to take several years off of teaching to focus on motherhood before the opportunity of teaching of St. X presented itself.

Why did you choose to teach at St. Xavier High School? I have always had an affinity for St. X. As a cross country runner in high school, the St. X invitational was one of my favorite races (probably due to the LaRosa’s dinner our coach would treat us to after the race). As I began my journey as a Religion teacher, I knew pretty early on that teaching in a Jesuit high school would be the best fit for me. Notre Dame had given me the rigorous preparation I would need to adequately educate and challenge the students of St. Xavier, and JVC had formed me in Ignatian spirituality and my commitment to justice. It also didn’t hurt being married to a St. X grad and knowing firsthand the amazing men that this school forms and sends forth into the world. You are very involved in a variety of ways with our students. How do you describe a St. Xavier student? The first word that comes to mind is “diverse”—St. X students are engaged in so many amazing endeavors, both in connection to St. Xavier as well as in the broader community. What I love about St. X students is how easily they support each other in all of these areas. St. X students do not get pigeonholed into a single activity or a single group of friends here. We have a large, curious, and eager student body who accept and encourage one another on the athletic fields, on stage, in the lab, in robotics, on retreats, in community service, and so many other arenas! We foster a celebration of the whole person at St. Xavier and foster a culture that models acceptance of those who are different than ourselves. I am especially touched to hear the stories of people who have met our students while they were in the community engaged in service. I have heard stories from people who were nearly moved to tears seeing how kind and loving our students are when working with people who are so often overlooked in our society. Our students often don’t get to hear these stories, but their acceptance and love of society’s most vulnerable is a powerful witness of God’s love in this world.

What is your favorite part of St. X? I love how passionate the adults in this community are for the students. I feel so privileged to work every day with the finest teachers, administrators, and staff. Everyone in this building in fully invested in the formation of our students. They never stop challenging themselves to do better. They are driven by the Magis— always reflecting on their content, teaching strategies or engagement with students, and constantly seeking to improve so as to assist our young men in becoming Men for and with Others. I am constantly impressed with the wisdom and dedication that my fellow teachers bring to their craft. What do you tell others about St. Xavier High School? Most people don’t need to be told about St. X—its reputation is well known. But if someone reaches out to me to ask about sending their son here, I begin by focusing on the formation that is so foundational to every part of our mission. St. X is not just about academics, but about forming human beings who will go out into the world to become better leaders, who bear witness to the Gospel, and seek a better society for all people. I explain the Grad at Grad and how intentional we are in challenging our students to grow in the five characteristics. Our students become more present to their experiences, growing in self-awareness as they reflect on how they have faced struggles and grown during their four years with us. St. Xavier students learn to see the world beyond themselves and leave our halls with a deeper understanding of the connection they are called to share with God, others, themselves, and creation. What do you feel is the St. Xavier Advantage? Obviously, the formation that I’ve described leads to a reputation that precedes every graduate as they go forth from this place. I have met people from far outside of Cincinnati who know that St. X students are amazing. People in the broader community know what can be expected of our students; they are not just smart kids with a good education! St. X grads are men with heart who care deeply about the world in which they live. They understand that there is joy in learning something new about themselves or others and that there is meaning in grounding your life in faith and community. They are formed in the pursuit of the Magis; there is always room for improvement and opportunities to make this world a better place. This reputation is the core advantage that we offer our students. We hope that each young man who walks through these halls accepts the challenge to see themselves as a man for others and embraces the formation that we foster in them. Is there anything else you would like to share with our community? I love being outside! Be it hiking, gardening, running, or even teaching a class. . . I love to be in the open-air exploring, digging, or just being still. Ask my students—especially any who have had me for Faith and Sacraments. If I can teach while outside at the amphitheater or sitting in the lawn behind the Jesuit residence. . . I’ve had a great day. My motto is generally “a good day is when you get dirty. . .and a great day is when you get dirty and (a little) bloody!” Winter 2020
